I’ve been to other OTs while away from my home base in Oregon and, while all of the instructors are good, some are exceptional. This is a shoutout to Noah who is one of the exceptional ones—thank you for a great class!

Called ahead of time to ask if 3 of my friends can come with me for their first class. When we got there (15 mins before class), the two young men in the entry said we came too late for the tour and they can’t have their intro class. We agreed to pay. Then they said they’ll give the girls their heart rate monitors, to go ahead into class and they would bring them in, however they never did. We stepped out of class to inquire and they said they ran out of them. They were playing with a toy basketball and not trying to work on anything. When I asked again they were being disrespectful and definitely not kind or costumer service oriented. They ruined my girlfriend’s first OTF experience as they were not provided a monitor and missed the entire concept. I wish OTF would address this ASAP as these men are actively hurting this business.

As a visitor from another studio I was shocked when I walked in to be greeted by Yaya who I had never met and he remembered to spell my name correctly when putting me in my starting spot. Mel was a fantastic instructor who clearly knows her regulars with the amount of times she provided feedback about weight choices and alternative exercises. As well as recognizing me for my increased efforts which was motivating! Very impressed with the studio!

First time in any gym. Went to OT because they hosted a fundraising event. Love their generosity and loved the experience. Front desk to coaches- everyone is very nice/helpful. Fun workouts, challenging yet no pressure, just emphasis on doing your individual best. Heart monitors are a great tool to help you understand in real time your level of effort and track your progress.

Coach Mel is the best! Orange theory works…whether you want to lose weight, increase lean mass, get stronger, improve cardiovascular health…Orange theory is the way to go. If you want to take the mental work out of a workout, Orange theory is for you. Just show up, work hard and you will see results. This studio has new treadmills and lots of parking. The staff here are awesome. It’s worth every penny.

Update, the equipment is still not perfect. But it’s the best workout-and I’ve been doing this for almost 7 years. Highly recommend and the community is fantastic!
I can’t say enough positive things about the coaches and staff at Portland - friendly, supportive, very good at their jobs.
Equipment reliability at this studio has been an issue for a while. It isn’t maintained or repaired properly which makes it extremely difficult to participate in benchmarks and challenges - and track my progress over time.
The entire staff has been made aware (and they’re *more than aware*) of the equipment issues, but the repairs/maintenance are not performed by anyone locally on staff -or- by someone, as an example, who knows what it should feel like to row on a rower.

I've been a member for several years and having worked out at several studios across the country, I believe Portland, ME studio is one of a kind. Positive and activating energy meets you at the door and carries through a great workout. All the coaches are great but nothing takes my mind off a 14 min RFD like watching Coach Mel shimmy and groove to a great beat.

Classes are great, maybe even a bit easy for the regular gym-goer.
Horrible studio layout, lockers are against the wall across from benches so people are always going to be in your way. Very cramped and not conducive to the gym layout or experience. Multiple doors for exit and entry make it even more confusing when at the lockers. It’s just an annoying way to go to the gym and be inundated with constant people in the way.
Also, some of the floor classes people are wayyyyy too close together and you cannot get any space to complete the workout. They really should limit the number of people to a class.
Will not be renewing.

I walked into Orangetheory Portland on my 64th birthday and signed up for twice weekly strength training classes. It was one of the scariest things I have done in a long time. It was the first time I had ever signed up for a fitness class. But it was time. As a menopausal woman it is vitally important that I build lean muscle which will decrease my risk of fractures. I am so impressed with Jennifer as a coach. I need a total right knee replacement. Jennifer is always ready with modifications to an excise so that I don’t injure or stress my knee. She is patient and a very good teacher. Caroline, who works at the desk, reaches out to check in on me if I miss a class. It is so lovely to walk into a gym and be greeted by name, to be known. If you are a menopausal woman who wants to learn how to “lift heavy” this of the place for you.

For 2 years this was my happy place. I loved the workouts and the supportive community. Slowly things started to change. The treadmills or rowing machines always had something wrong with at least one of them. The showers wouldn't have hot water. The workouts started to become boring and repetitive. I stuck with it through all of this because I loved the people. The final straw was when the best and most motivational coach they had was fired. It completely destroyed the community that motivated me to get up for the 5 am class. When I asked for the papers to cancel my membership the manager handed them to me and continued to joke with another employee rather than make any attempt to keep me as a member. She didn't even ask why or if there was anything they could do to keep me. Do yourself a favor and avoid this location and the other two in Maine as they are all under the same management.

Not worth the high price tag of $180. After being a member at this studio for years new management is the worst I’ve ever witnessed and perpetual liars. They mention in the comments below they reached out….they did not. This is not a surprise as two women with zero I mean ZERO qualifications are running all of the Maine studios and they’re running them into the ground………How these two women got promoted great question…..(eye roll we all know). Higher management of Empire Portfolio Group who bought this franchise have sent threatening emails to former members intimidating them to cancel after they voiced concern over decisions made by management. The decision made was firing the best coach they had. She had the highest utilized classes and was chosen as the best coach from her studio and one week later fired??? because she voiced concern over the new management??? The only reason she was fired was due to the new manager having it out for her ever since she got her completely unwarranted promotion they literally have zero reasoning behind the firing. This sad sad sad manger couldn’t spell one hundred correctly on a check I received from them and is somehow running studios…I mean yikes. Due to lack of emotional regulation that same manager blocked paying members from orange theories social media page??? Members were told they can’t talk about the coaches firing in the studio? I guess free speech isn’t allowed? I’ve never witnessed a business be run in this manner an absolute HR nightmare. They have led to so many people leaving and have ruined the entire community there in the span of months. Mass exodus recently and entirely deserved. I can say with great confidence one of the managers there is just about the worst human I’ve ever met and the other one is close behind. Petty review but as a 6 year orange theory member all over the east coast it is 100% warranted. Other great options F45 or Form Lab!

The workout is great. The coaches are FANTASTIC. (Shout out to Meg, Jackson, Mel, Lisa)
After the firing of one of their best and most loved coaches caused an outpouring of support for her, the management team chose to not only ignore it, but to try to suppress it - making it clear how out of touch they are with what makes OT so great, the people.
This disregard for their clients and the community that’s been built has created an awkward and uncomfortable common space. At this point, I can’t recommend if you’re looking for community.

Disorganized and just looking for money. I filled out the information form online because they were offering a free first class to test the program out. I was called by a rep and left a voicemail, which I responded to and set up my first class. I had something come up with my family and had to reschedule, and then my boss scheduled a meeting this afternoon with no warning. I called to see if I could reschedule to tomorrow afternoon and I was told I “took classes elsewhere” and now have to pay $30 and do not get the first class free (and they refused to explain what other “classes” they’re even talking about). I’ve never taken a fitness class in MY LIFE. Let alone an Orange Theory. I exclusively go to the gym. They said they were only going to inform me of this AFTER I showed up (while I was expecting to get a free first class and then potentially set up a monthly plan if I liked it). I was very nervous about doing a group class from the beginning because I’ve never done one and was worried about being judged. I had to build the courage to even go to one and then to be told I “took classes elsewhere and no longer get a first free class” is ridiculous. I was really looking forward to the class, but I will stick with my gym.

It’s easy to become addicted to OrangeTheory. The workouts are challenging, the music is fun, and the instructors are knowledgeable, encouraging, and keep the energy higher from start to finish.
It is painful for me to have to revise my post from only four months ago. While OrangeTheory has hired some talented coaches, they have also lost their best coaches. The loss of Megan will be felt across the local OrangeTheory community. The knowledge of her craft, her passion for coaching, and her inclusive and positive outlook will be missed by the community. I truly hope that Management takes this seriously, change needs to happen or the soul of OT Portland will be lost. We're not a small and silent set of Members. Time to get serious!

Unfortunately this place has changed so much and is not worth attending classes. The equipment (besides the treadmills) is old and is always in dis-repair. It used to be worth putting up with the annoying things for the great classes, but the work environment is extremely toxic and has pushed out MOST of the people worth keeping (coaches and staff). Now the small studio size, lack of organization, lack of parking, awful airflow, and lack of amenities isn’t worth the high price tag. There is terrible leadership on both a local and corporate level, and I wouldn’t recommend anyone joining who wants that community feel, as the staff you will get close to will likely get fired with no explanation.

I love Orange Theory, and my home studio in Portland in particular. The staff and community are welcoming, supportive, encouraging, and continue to create and environment where we can all challenge ourselves to More Life.
All of that sounds like it would be a 5 star review, and it would be if the regional owners would support the local team in maintaining the equipment and facilities.
In the 4+ years I've been a member, I cannot remember a time when something wasn't broken, and stayed broken for weeks at a time. Treadmills, rowers, weights, showers (water pressure, hot water), restrooms, bottle fillers.
And, I know things break. That's not the issue. The issue is that things break and stay broken.
Its a lot harder to justify the cost of a membership when I never know if I'll be able to have a shower, fill up my water, or have working equipment any given day I'm there.
And the community makes it work staying, in spite of all that.

I’m a consistent regular at the 6a classes at OTF Portland. The community and the coaches at this studio are unmatched (shout out to Mel for her dance moves, Meagan for her motivation and playlists!, and Jackson for his amazing energy). I get a lot of joy from supporting others in reaching their goals, meeting/greeting new people to our studio, and engaging in our amazing community.
All that said, my one star rating may surprise you. The studio has gone downhill since it originally opened, specifically in equipment maintenance. I understand that over time, equipment can fail. It also degrades. That said, the equipment is not maintained, repaired properly, or replaced when the same station has repeated issues (example - Rower 7 hasn’t been tracking meters for 6+ weeks).
The Portland studio is one of three in Maine - not only the one that has been open the longest, but that has the largest membership. That means in Maine, this studio is the largest grossing in dollars for the franchise owner.
The franchise should do what’s right and respond in kind to the amount of money they’re making and sufficiently keep the equipment maintained and running properly. At this point, if you want to try OrangeTheory - I recommend looking into The Form Lab in Portland (soon to be Falmouth). Community there is just as great AND the owners maintain the equipment properly.

I love OrangeTheory (I’m a founding member at Portland with over 1700 classes under my belt). You’re going to see my one-star review and think, the words don’t match the review.
Here’s the thing - the coaching and motivation within the studio that pushes me beyond my abilities mentally and physically is unmatched (shout out to Meagan and Mel). The *problem* is that the equipment in the Portland studio is FOREVER having issues (primarily leaning toward broken, less likely leaning toward “worn”) and the monthly membership is WAY too expensive for it to not be properly maintained and reliable. I shouldn’t be sitting on a rower with a broken handle for multiple days in a row and I also shouldn’t be able to say that for 6+ weeks now, Rower 7 hasn’t been tracking meters (and the Teams that had to compete for Capture the Flag on that rower got SCREWED).
Does the studio have a regional person assigned to equipment repair? We sure do. Has this person ever actually rowed on a rower so they know what the tension should feel like? Absolutely NOT.
Portland is not only the longest tenured studio in Maine but it’s also the largest in terms of membership numbers. Put the money into the studio that’s MAKING THE MONEY to keep the members. There’s your bottom line.

I joined Orange Theory Fitness Portland a/k/a OTF in January 2022 as a newbie on the eve of my 69th year of existence. This came about for two reasons. The first was Coach Lexi becoming a coach at OTF after leaving a gym I frequented and which I knew her from. The second was my health carrier, at about the same time, providing an Elite membership under a policy feature. There was trepidation about taking this plunge primarily centered on age concerns despite a past varied exercise background inclusive of activities such as mud, trail and road races, boot camps, ballet, weight training, multiple strains of yoga et al. But these activities seemed to be in my rear view mirror and starting OTF at very close to 69 did not seem a sound idea. However I decided to try it and my body quickly responded favorably. I have gravitated, on occasion, beyond the standard classes into their specialty classes, their 90 minute classes and their Dri Tri(set distances on the treadmill and rower plus 300 body weight exercises) and even doing back to back classes while also purchasing extra classes monthly when my 8 class insurance provided allotment is exhausted. The templates and coaches are all great. It's a fun and fast paced workout. While taking delight in the high calorie burn and the splat points garnered as a byproduct of the burn, I've noted tangible physical benefits in the cardio and musculature realms. Partaking in Orange Theory Fitness classes in conjunction with an active yoga, barre, matte, mobility practice at another facility appears to be the perfect exercise regimen for my age. My intent is to retain this regimen as long as physically able.

I always felt intimidated when people suggested I try OTF. But after trying my first free class it was hook, line, and sinker for me. It's an inclusive, go-at-your-own pace workout, with a variety of class times. The best part of the workout is hands down the coaches. Picking a favorite coach is like asking you to choose your favorite child. If you're hesitant, try a class with Karleigh or Jackson and you won't be disappointed.

I’m low-key obsessed with OTF and all the coaches/everyone that works there.
Some highlights:
Lexi = best laugh and dance moves
Jackson = most cheerful greeting you’ve ever heard at 6am Meagan = makes you feel like a million bucks when she compliments your performance or weight choice
Mel = the above applies for Mel too + a memory of her dancing to one my fave early 2000s songs during a rowing block still makes me smile
Lisa = great music + her form is goals
Karleigh = great energy and I aspire to have muscles like her someday!
The psychology of OTF is brilliant. It’s super motivating for me and I love seeing my performance improve.

I started attending OTF because it was within walking distance of my apartment. It is the best decision I've made for my health and fitness. The small group aspect of the classes is incredibly motivating and the structured workouts remove all questions about what to do and how long to do it. All I have to do is show up and I know I'll get a great workout.
Besides the structured nature of the programs, I must mention that the coaches and staff are just great people. They know everyone by name, are helpful, motivating and clearly enjoy what they do.
It's been over a year and a half and my fitness has improved dramatically from my first class. I've since moved a 20-minute drive away and attend more now than when it was across the street. I can't recommend this place enough.

Love it . It challenges you .instructors are amazing. I never thought I would be or go to a gym since I can easily get bored and I am very high energy guy. Staff had very impact on me coming again without feeling overwhelmed or shy( though I am not the typical shy guy). If you love challenge, want improve your health/stamina that is the place to go

The management at this location is a joke and horribly rude. My girlfriend and I moved from Portland, ME to MA and she wanted to transfer to a local club. As a gift, I pay for her membership to Orangetheory. The club in Danvers, MA had her sign a transfer form and said that they will submit it to Portland so it can be transferred to Danvers. A few days later after following up with Danvers, they told us that Portland flat out told them they would not release my girlfriend's account and that we needed to call the Portland location. My girlfriend called the Portland location and they told her that they can't accept the transfer form and didn't give her any other direction and just said that she needs to cancel with Portland and that if she wants to sing up with Danvers so bad, she needs to sign up at the increased regular price (as opposed to letting her transfer with the reduced summer rate she got). After my girlfriend told me how discouraged she was with the whole situation, after I saw how upset she was, and seeing as how I am paying for this, I called the Danvers location to see what the hold up was in getting Portland to transfer my girlfriend to Danvers. They said that they have tried but Portland is holding their feet in the ground. So I gave a call to Portland and spoke with the manager there, Danielle. I asked why there was a hold up having my girlfriends account transferred to Danvers... and so began the garbage excuses that started to be spoken to me. I explained exactly what happened and everything that I knew about the situation because I heard every detail from my girlfriend and I knew how much money I give her for her membership. 1) Danielle was insanely rude because I am the person paying for this and not willing to work with me or offer up any reasonable solution to the problem at hand given the details whatsoever. The first thing Danielle told me was that Portland received a cancellation form when I saw the form my girlfriend signed and confirmed with Danvers before calling Portland, and it was a transfer form (lie count: 1), I immediately interrupted and said "no, it was a transfer form, I saw the form" and she was incredibly rude and developed a tone with me and said "ok well if you'd let me finish". That is horrible service and rude, I am indirectly paying for your service, you should never be rude to a customer like that ever. So Danielle starts telling me we can't transfer your girlfriend's account because it's scheduled to be canceled on August 22nd and we can't transfer an account once its scheduled to be canceled. I said, "we didn't sign a cancellation form so thats a mistake, how can you fix it" and she goes there is nothing I can do. I told her that this whole situation is ridiculous and wrong, and Danvers said that we are able to transfer memberships without a problem so long as a key rec is put in through corporate. She goes "why does she even want to transfer anyway?" why does she want to transfer? Like, hello we live in MA now, she goes to Danvers, she's taking up space in Danvers and Danvers isn't seeing the money for that and they should be. It also sounds like if you are a member at the Danvers location you get more perks of being a member there. Danielle flat out says "Nope, that's incorrect, there is not difference of which gym is your home gym, we have members who live all over who have us as their home gym." And I said "well even if that's true, we want a transfer." So then she goes "we don't do transfers anymore". I said well I don't understand how you can choose not to do a transfer when Danvers does transfers all the time no problem? (By the way, after this phone call with Danielle and calling back the Danvers location, they do transfer... Lie count: 2). Danielle made it completely evident that she wasn't going to be helping me. Danielle cancelled the membership without authorization, lied to us, all so the Portland location could keep the money. Corporate will be called on Monday. We didn't authorize cancellation and Portland lied saying they received a cancellation form.

Poorly run & managed. Forget “the customer is always right”. Simply trying to go dine to a basic membership was a major event for them, and they told me I had to pay an additional month at the higher level (after already having to stay at the higher level the previous month, which I didn’t want).
To top it all off, they told me if I wanted to upgrade, I could do so and the higher charge could hit for the next month! (So you csn go up and pay more right away, but go down & we bill you an extra month that you don’t want at the higher rate.
Now that’s how to run a business!

I love the team at OTF in Portland. Both the coaches and the front desk staff are incredibly helpful/nice. The workout itself is challenging and inspiring all at once. I am constantly seeing improvements in my workout abilities - which is something I can't say I've seen at other gyms. I love OTF and would recommend it to anyone looking to up their workout game (at a level that works for them).

I love the energized feel of the workout. I like that it's guided and I have the coach for support. Going in, I know the overall intent of the session whether it be power, endurance or strength. Every session is different so I'm never bored. I like that there's no judgement. Everyone is competing against the person they were yesterday. Okay, maybe there's a LITTLE competition, but in a healthy, supportive way. Partner workouts means I work a little harder so I don't let my partner down. I know I would never work that hard on my own.

I like how structured it is. You just show up, and do what you're told. The lack of choice makes sure I'm having a well rounded workout, as well as not choosing wimp out on the effort level. It feels like football practice used to back in high school, which makes it very approachable and familiar.

As someone who works from home and could easily work from 7am tp 7pm without moving or realizing, I LOVE that the OrangeTheory workouts motivate me to leave my house/desk. And as someone who travels for a living, I LOVE that I can find an OTF nearly everywhere I go.

I love the sense of community you get here. Encouragement from coaches and other members during workouts, even people you have never met before.
The planned workouts that mean you don't need to know or think about what to do, just follow the instructions from the coach make this a great place to just push and see results.

I like that it is consistent (treads, rowers, strength), that you pretty much know what you are going to get in terms of quality workout - just not EXACTLY how it will be put together, that I can show up and work - but not have to think too hard, that there are people there for a gazillion different reasons - and it doesn't matter why you are there - only that you show up, you can make friends, or not, chat or be quiet - work hard or coast.
**Love the music variety - and TOTALLY get that volume CAN help with motivation- but coaches should remember it can also be deafening. If you have the best cues and I can't hear them over the music the end result is I don't know what I am supposed to be doing ....which means I may either work too hard too soon, or hold back and leave the workout frustrated because I did not push hard enough.**

Called to inquire about prices and membership costs because I was interested in joining and getting a membership for my wife as a gift. I was told they can’t give prices over the phone, that I needed to come into the store. I mentioned that I wasn’t able and was told that was there policy and they couldn’t help me out. I’m sorry, but that is just a bad customer acquisition strategy. I think you just lost yourself a potential client.

As a person who has never enjoyed exercise, OTF Portland has helped me change my mindset -- I have now been a member for over a year. The staff are welcoming, kind, and always helpful. The coaches are extremely well trained, supportive, and push everyone in the class to reach (and pass) their goals. If you're unsure about working out, I HIGHLY recommend OTF Portland. They know what's up!
