Everything here is "temporarily out of order": one of the showers and the hand dryer in the men's locker room has been out of service for months, the lift from the first floor to the second floor is the same, as well as one of the entrance doors. Many of the machines and paper towel dispensers need repair, and today they're "temporarily closed" because they have no power, even though the rest of the plaza does.

The only saving grace for this place is that the staff is friendly, but they seem more concerned with enforcing their ridiculous dress code than making sure everything is working correctly. I suppose you get what you pay for, but if I'm paying at all I want things to work. Get it together, Planet Fitness South Portland.

Friendly staff. Plenty of equipment, mostly cardio but still enough weight machines and free weights to get the job done. Lots of cleaning stations for an easy wipe down of machines when you're done, but not all gym users utilize them unfortunately. Nice locker room/bathroom and plenty of lockers, but there was some trash accumulating on the floor. Overall a good value for the money if you're an average person trying to get fit or stay fit. I have the basic membership. The locker rooms, black card areas, and front desk are downstairs, while the exercise areas are all upstairs. No elevator, so be aware. It does get a little warm in the late afternoon because all the windows face the west, but the huge fans above the cardio machines are great.

One of the worst gyms in the area, and it’s such a shame because there are rarely any other gyms in Portland Maine area. Simply because of their ridiculous policies. Wasn’t allowed to bring in a jumprope, which is fair I understand no home equipment, but when I got dress coded today for wearing a cutoff it absolutely drew the line. I’ve worn the same cutoff multiple times before however the employees think they’re part of something bigger with their ego and dress coded me. Didn’t allow me to workout. Real “judgement free zone” if you ask me. If you have the chance and money isn’t an issue ANY other gym would be 100% better.

This pains me to only leave a three star review of my favorite planet fitness location in Maine. But I feel my experience here is necessary to share. I had truly felt this was a judgement free zone as their moto states on their wall for the longest time. However this afternoon I was meet by another member in the locker room and he had made a lot of interesting comments and insinuations about my weight. Randomly without any prompting or me talking to him. I have a thyroid issue and have gained a lot of weight due to previous medication I was on due to epilepsy. This jerk made comments about me being overweight. Keep in mind I have been trying to lose weight for years. This jerk had the nerve to make remarks about my weight after I was trying to be friendly with him after even after he was rude. And that he’s in good shape because he was a service man and that I wouldn’t last two seconds in his shoes. Also keep in mind that I had tried being friendly to him by making a comment about how busy it is in there and how most of the equipment was unavailable due to other members using them. I then left after my encounter with this jerk in the locker room ( I was heading out the door anyway to meet some friends). I then called the south Portland location and gave my description of this person to the girl over the phone. She really seemed apologetic about this incident and like she really cared. I don’t know if this is enough for me however. My hope is that they actually figure out who this person was and handle them appropriately for being rude to another member. I have no problems with the lady on the phone as she was VERY kind and apologetic. I just hope planet fitness can resolve this.

Always over sold with too many members. Never enough of certain machines. Only 1 pec deck. Not enough cable cross overs. Only 1 hip sled. Too much cardio equipment. No real bench presses. Only smith machines and not enough of them. Started in Falmouth and when that got too busy moved to the one by the mall. That's too busy. Can't do anything after 5 PM. I started going at like 6 AM and still can't get on anything. Hard to beat the price though and it includes tanning. Wish there was a better alternative but I still stay.

This location lacks customer service. I was stereotype and discriminated against by one of the staff. Around 10:50am today I was stopped and asked to provide an ID after checking in with my phone. I was confused and baffled because just last week a staff asked to have a second card put in the system and of course I complied. So imagine yet again being asked to provide an ID something that I have never been questioned or asked about at any location except the day I opened my account over 7 years ago because “I did not look like the photo they had in their system”. Luckily another staff told the staff who asked me for a second ID to let me go. When I came down to talk to the two staff that were downstairs to ask why I was being questioned about providing an ID, the staff that had asked me for my ID said it was their policy and because “people have been using other peoples accounts to get in” I looked at him and said “Do I look like other people”. Unfortunately I did, a young black women. Who to him looked like a FREELOADER, someone who probably couldn’t afford to be using an account with a “BLACK CARD membership”. Because I was black, I was disgusted. Imagine if I can be stopped and asked weather the photo they have is me or not is happening, how many other black women or even men are coming to this location every day getting questioned about their account or if they are using someone else’s account??. I don’t care if I was paying $2, I and another black individual coming to this establishment deserves the same respect as anyone else period. Do better approaching people especially women about their appearance because you never know what anyone is going through so how dare of your staff to treat me or anyone this type of way and expect me to accept the discrimination and disrespect. How dare of your staff to make me feel like I cannot afford to PAY to come to the gym when I have been a member for over 7 years and used MY OWN PHONE to check in. Tell me who in their right MIND would give someone their PHONE to check in if I was a FREELOADER or using someone else’s account. DO better because everyone who comes to the gym come to relieve stress and not have one added because staff feels like it’s okay to harass customers about account that actually belong to them. Even if it didn’t, as a BLACK card holder, I have EVERY right to bring anyone as a GUEST!!! And that’s FREE. All in all, if anyone ever feels disrespectful by staff at this location, I urge you to stand up for yourself. I have been in the customer industry all my life so PLEASE save me with any excuse for this disrespect and embarrassment from your staff. I’ve worked at the airport and dealt with more obviously your staff LACKS customer service and NEEDS training dealing with customers and not stereotyping them base on how they LOOK. DO BETTER!!!!

Everything about SoPo PF is what made it my home gym. The staff is kind, helpful, and considerate. Everyone who walks through the doors is acknowledged..great customer service! The layout of the building is perfect..with the main floor of the gym being upstairs, you are able to hear and communicate well at the reception area. The number and variety of equipment means you rarely, if ever, have to wait to use the gym equipment, tanning beds, massage chairs/bed, or even the showers/changing spaces!! Thank you PF SoPo!

I haven't been to Planet Fitness in over a year. Reasonable price. Nice gym with weight machines, weights and a water massage bed. They also have massage chairs which I found painful. They have tanning booths which I found to not be healthy in a place promoting health. The reason I left was because they eliminated the Total Body Experience. I have osteopenia. I felt like the vibration platform was helpful with my low bone density. I changed to Aging Partners which has a vibration platform.

I have never had an issue with this place until today, i was getting ready to use the shower area and i heard a dog running around and not listening to the owner, i understand people with service animals and i have respect for that, but this dog was clearly not a service dog, and they were bathing the dog in the showers and letting it run away wet, i literally changed and left instead of showering.

I never felt like I was a "gym person" until I started going to Planet Fitness three times a week. I'm LOVING it, and have added a fourth day to my routine 😁
I really like the assortment of machines they have available, and the 30 Minute Workout room is such a great feature. Everything is clean and tidy looking, there's plenty of cleaning stations, and the water bottle fountains are so convenient. Even the people at the desk are always super helpful and kind. And those hydromassage chairs? Amazing.
Definitely recommend checking out this gym :)

I've always had a good experience with planet fitness in the past and this planet fitness is no exception. However, they have removed their weight scales. I was told it's not inclusive enough. But what about athletes trying to make weight? What about people trying to track their weightloss journeys? If privacy is a problem perhaps they can put the scale in one of the changing rooms. But I think it's ridiculous they don't have one but they have showers and changing rooms among other commodities.

Cancelling a planet fitness membership is a nightmare. I dropped in over a year ago to cancel my membership; they make you do it in person to make it that much more difficult. I was assured it was cancelled, but was continued to be charged unknowingly for a year. Talked to several customer service reps that were as helpful as fireproof kindling. The folks running this place really do the best they can. I began my lifting journey and have moved to a smaller gym since, but I received nothing but support here. I always had questions about form and different weights and exercises - even questions about things like creatine and pre workout - and they were always patient and kind (totally not required). Even now, I just come in to tan, and they’re always as accommodating as possible, and the facilities remain remarkably clean considering the level of traffic they get.

I travel all over the country for work and experience numerous Planet Fitness locations. The best gyms are always the ones with the most motivated employees. Every time I come to this location I see this gentleman John (pictured below) always working hard to keep the gym clean and stocked with towels and sanitizer. Rude employees but that’s what happens when you hire young kids to work your front desk…..I get it not having the correct shoes you can’t workout though I never had a issue before working out in crocs when I’m just doing machines (I come to this location quite often with crocs on all the time) I politely accepted and changed my shoes but if you’re going to manage a location you should be wearing the proper shoes not work boots they’re a walking contradiction you work at a gym not construction site! On top of it all I’m finishing my workout and there’s another person working out with work boots on and another wearing sandals shaking my head by the level of disrespect I just had to deal with!

Overall a great Planet fitness location. It's actually a two-story facility with the check-in and bathrooms on the first floor in the gym located on the second. I have to say that the upstairs portion was pretty spacious and all the equipment was clean and I'm working order. Also the bathrooms were a decent size with the showers being clean and had pretty good water pressure. Overall definitely recommend this location if you're in the area.

Lunkhead said i was wrong. I pointed him at the rules which ate clearly posted. He road me I should have the same conversation with others who were monopolizing the machines. Truth is, I have; the previous two parties I spoke with checked the posted sign and noted I was correct, and apologized for monopolizing the machines. When I went to find a staff member the lunkhead who was belligerent when I pointed out the rules, began harassing my wife. The staff did nothing about the jerk.

What is the point of having a 30 minute workout with machines dedicated to the workout as a sort of crossfit lite if you let lunkheads monopolize the machines? Doing all your sets for bodybuilding or strength training is what the standalone machines in the other rooms are for, not the machines in the 30 minute workout room.

We elected to terminate our meberships effective immediately and I will be joining a ceossfit gym. It costs a lot more but the workout stations are enforced during scheduled crossfit, and there is a personal trainer ratio of 3:1 for the crossfit circuits.

We kept our memberships active throughout covid and now regret it.

Give Planet Fitness a miss and go to a real gym.
