I have been training with Shelby and crew for over 7 years now and it has been an incredibly positive experience. I was a reluctant starter, but it didn't take long for me to feel positive results. Years of competitive sports and working construction have taken a toll on my body, but the personalized workouts to help specific areas and overall body awareness that they have taught me has helped me stay active, competitive, and frankly in better shape than when I was younger. I am 82 and have trained with Shelby and his team for 21+ years. I am able to travel, do short hikes, garden, walk regularly and move in my environment without difficulty. I have plenty of energy plus few aches and pains. The team has modified my workouts to accommodate a few health issues.
I have two friends who are also in their 80s and also work out with the team at Shelby's. We all feel fortunate to be able to engage in so many activities and to have coaches who personalize our workouts. The environment is welcoming to all ages and the atmosphere is very positive.
There are numerous events and challenges throughout the year that make it a fun place to work out.

I was in high school when I started to work with Shelby and his staff. One of my biggest issues with going to the gym is not knowing how to train with intent in my sport. Shelby was always able to explain the purpose and the technique for each exercise. Even if there was a workout, I did not want to do he was there to make me get the most out of it and help me realize everything we did in the gym had purpose.

I started out at Shelby Trained as part of my recovery from a life-changing injury. I had little confidence in my strength and conditioning and the inside of a gym was not exactly my comfort zone. The team here has been a real joy to work with, and it's no understatement that my time here has transformed my life.

Progress inside the gym is clearly apparent and measurable - lifting heavier things, jumping higher, improving balance and stability. Progress outside the gym is also evident; the limitations caused by my injury have become less impactful in my day-to-day life. I'm able to confidently deadlift a wriggly toddler off the floor (100 times a day).

The trainers are excellent, offering a great balance of guidance, coaching and encouragement. The workouts are varied, keeping everything fresh, interesting and challenging. The facility is bright, clean and well equipped, and the atmosphere created by the friendly trainers and clients makes it a welcome space to share those few hours each week. I highly recommend ST to anyone looking for a well-rounded, effective and bespoke fitness experience.

Our family has been training at Shelby Trained for 9 months: we jump higher, run faster, feel stronger, and balance better. We recover more quickly, are more flexible and are more aware of our bodies. And, we actually LOOK FORWARD to going to gym, to engaging with the amazing trainers, to working hard and to laughing with the team. The only downside? You have to commit. But, even that is easier than it sounds because they make it easy for you. We work out twice a week in sessions. I travel a TON, but they offer multiple options for highly structured, real-time, virtual training with one of the trainers. And, it doesn't matter whether you can get to a gym or work out in your hotel room. So, I'm able to train while I'm on the road, too.

Did I mention the trainers? From Shelby to the rest of the team, they're thoughtful, professional, engaged. They know their stuff. And, they're fun people too. You really can't do better.

I'm in the middle of my second year at Shelby Trained. I have never stuck to an exercise program in the past like I have with this outstanding fitness studio. It's because of the friendly trainers, the community atmosphere, and the personalized program. And they address all aspects of good health: fitness and strength, nutrition, and time management. I think the number 1 reason I'm sticking to it so well is their focus on commitment. If I don't show up for a scheduled session, they would reach out to find out why. Really experienced training. I came in with a whole bunch of mobility issues and chronic plantar fasciitis. The staff was able to do a thorough assessment on me and told me exactly the things I needed to do in order to improve mobility and heal my plantar fasciitis. You can tell they really care about going the “extra mile” for their clientele. I trained remotely which means I wasn’t in the gym all the time but I always had access to a trainer if I had a question and I received instructional videos with each one of my exercises. I’m 27 years old and I’m glad I didn’t wait any longer to start taking my workouts and health seriously!

I have worked with Shelby and his team both in person, and online through the app, for almost 14 years and I will wholeheartedly say that I would recommend Shelby to anyone, whether you’re a high level athlete, someone dealing with pain, or someone just trying to get in better shape. Shelby and his team are all incredibly knowledgeable but also are fully invested in their clients goals and overall wellbeing, which is why I have continued to exercise using workouts provided to me by Shelby through high school, college, and still now as an adult. Shelby’s programs were a huge part of the reason I was able to play collegiate sports (basketball, track & field) but for me, the greatest inpact he has had is helping to mitigate injuries. As someone who is prone to joint issues, I am firmly confident that I would have sustained many more and much more severe injuries during my time as an athlete had it not been for Shelby. All the trainers are excellent but Peggy, who is now the master trainer, is exceptional. She demonstrates each movement if it is new or if I need a reminder, watches my execution and corrects my form to improve my performance and ensure that I benefit the most from my sessions - "not so quickly, hinge from the hips, shoulders back etc". What is particularly nice is that she keeps track and suggests changes even if I am not in her group! Recently, when I returned from two weeks away she noted that one of my shoulders was quite stiff, asked me to bring in the exercises that my physical therapist had recommended a year ago and has included them in my program. She is ambitious for me and my improvement and pushes me to heavier weights, to more reps and the completion of each set of exercises in a very nice but determined way. I feel very fortunate to have found Shelby trained and Peggy.

I have had a great experience here with the personal trainers. First they evaluate your physical strengths and weaknesses and design a custom set of exercises to improve your strength, stamina and balance. The exercise program changes about once a month so it doesn't get boring. What I like is that they are moderately challenging but not too challenging and are tailored to your own situation, including if you have weaknesses or minor injuries. For me it is about gaining strength gradually to reduce the chance of injury. There is a good balance between the serious and the casual workout ethic and they generally have great music!

My son has been going for over a year now. He truly enjoys going there and for multiple reasons. First, a lot of his friends go so it makes it easy for him to want to go. Second, he loves the instructors. They relate extremely well to my son and make it a fun experience. I first joined thanks to the recommendation from my Dr. as part of the recovery process from a pretty bad injury, and have since been supported through recovering from an entirely different injury. I have been going to Shelby Trained for about 4 months and am very happy with it. I used to workout with a personal trainer regularly, but after moving to Maine had not done any structured training for about 18 months. Coming into Shelby, the team did a full workup of my current fitness levels and my goals for training. Based on that they put together personalized hour long workouts for me which are updated every month or so.

Working out with other people in 4 person pods has enhanced the experience for me. It's really quite social and fun, and I look forward to going to Shelby and seeing the friends I've made there.

In addition, all of the staff at Shelby are very knowledgable and professional, while also being fun to interact with. They do an excellent job of providing feedback and corrections and cues to ensure that I'm doing the exercises in a way that avoids injury and provides maximum benefit.

I have balance issues due to a disability and Shelby Trained has included exercises to improve my balance in my workouts. After 4 months, I already see a difference and have noted that my balance is markedly improved. In addition, I am stronger and have more muscle tone. The other concern I brought to them was maintaining bone density. The weight bearing exercises that are included in my workouts help me to do this.

All in all, Shelby Trained is a great way to improve your fitness.

I've never been an athlete, but always kept on the move enough to stay in decent shape. But as I approached my 70th birthday this year, I needed a more structured work-out to increase my strength and stability. A friend recommended Shelby, and I started in April and so glad I did. The customized routine challenges me enough that I can see and feel the results, but it's not so killer that I'm reluctant to go in. The trainers, Peggy, Hannah and Grayson, are knowledgeable, personable and fun to work with. It's great to get a good work-out and have some laughs along with it. There are high school and college athletes who train there, and they're good kids who are respectful and join in the fun with us older folks. I always walk in feeling welcome by the whole staff and leave feeling like I did a good thing for myself. Highly recommend Shelby Trained!

After coming to Shelby Trained for just over a year I can earnestly say that the staff is among the best. They are attentive, personable and adaptive. I have come to them with various quirks and they have been able to adjust work outs to correct those quirks. I, for example, had a cranky knee and they were able to work in corrective exercises and stretches. With time the knee is now much better. So I highly recommend this training group.

In addition, the equipment is clean and in good shape. The majority of clients are a mix of local athletes and people like myself who need the extra care and accountability in order to achieve their goals.
