York County Barbell is a legit weightlifting gym! I moved to Rochester, NH from Nebraska and Stephen and the community here has made me feel so welcomed to the area. The environment during a training session is unbeatable. You also won't find better Olympic weightlifting coaching, powerlifting or just general fitness instruction in the area. There's a wonderful team here and a great opportunity!

I started training with Stephen at York County Barbell just over a month ago and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made! I recently moved to the area from out of state and was looking for a gym to continue improving my weightlifting skills. Stephen's approach to coaching is thoughtful, encouraging, and kind. He is the most knowledgeable and intuitive coach I've worked with and I've already learned so much in the few weeks I've been training with him. Stephen is an exceptional weightlifting coach, with extensive knowledge, a keen eye, and a kind, calm demeanor. As an introvert, I've never been fond of being coached, but Stephen changed that. Although I've been athletic all my life, I had no prior experience in weightlifting. He also helped me address some mobility issues I was dealing with before working with him. The gym also has an in-house nutrition coach, Elsbeth, who plays an instrumental role in optimizing both performance and well-being. Overall, York County Barbell is a welcoming community of athletes, led by a highly skilled coach. I highly recommend checking them out!

Steven and the entire YCB community are so kind and welcoming. I love stopping in to train whenever I am visiting the Southern Maine area.
The gym itself has everything you need to get a great weightlifting session in and the coaching is always straightforward and very helpful.

I started working with Steve at York County Barbell when I wanted to train for my first weightlifting meet. As a life long, self-taught athlete, I wanted to rework my technique and get a program that would leave me feeling confident heading on to the platform. Plus, I had some ambitious PRs I wanted to set. Steve slowly refined my technique, and in doing so, never left me feeling overwhelmed, instead he gave me a steady trickle of small things to work on. Over time my technique improved, and I gained a much better understanding of the lifts and how to move. I got stronger than ever and finally broke through some long-standing plateaus. If you’re interested in the sport of weightlifting, I can’t recommend York Country Barbell enough!

When I started at York County BarbellI was dealing with a lot of pain and could no longer lift. Stephen took my lifting back to the basics and 18 months later I am working out pain free and starting to push towards new PR’s. Stephen was very patient and supportive throughout the entire process. I love being a part of York County Barbell. The atmosphere in the gym is very welcoming and allows for athletes of all levels. For me the coaching has been one of the biggest positive. Stephen gets down to very minute changes in my form. As well as being there for all my competitions. I can't say enough about York County Barbell and Owner / Head Coach Stephen Mason. No matter your background or experience, even if (and ESPECIALLY IF) you are a beginner to weightlifting or strength training, this is the place for you. You'll find a noticeably inclusive space (in all respects of the word) and not only a phenomenal coach, but an incredibly supportive team of fellow lifters that spans ages, sizes, and identities who are ready to cheer you on every step of the way.
The facility is clean, bright, creative, and well-appointed.
The options are plentiful: train for specific goals within the sport of Olympic Weightlifting; use strength training to support your other athletic or health goals; and more.
It's well-worth the drive if you aren't local to North Berwick. I live near Biddeford and drive 35-40 minutes to YCB twice a week for Stephen's coaching, the support of my teammates, and the excellent equipment and facility. I train at home two additional days each week and upload videos of my lifts to our coaching app, which Stephen reviews and provides video analysis on so that I can get his feedback remotely.

I’ve been lucky enough to train here for the last few winters, and each time I come back I’m reminded of how great this place is! There is a supportive community atmosphere which is rare to find. I dropped in at YCB in January [2023] just to meet Steve and check out the space. I was interested in competing in a local meet Steve was putting on at my crossfit gym (where I had been a member for 4 years). I decided to sign on with YCB temporarily to work on improving my lifts, with every intention of going back to CF afterwards. I really enjoyed working with Steve and got a lot out of it, and I also got to know many of the members over the next three months. I did really well at the comp (favorite day of the year!) and ultimately decided to drop CF and put all my energy into weightlifting.
Steve is an amazing coach and I have seen huge leaps in my strength and skill over the past year. My workouts are something I look forward to every single time, as they are always challenging and engaging and geared toward consistent improvement. Steve gives very crucial feedback and finds a way to make it work for you so you can receive it and put it into action.
The culture in the gym is uplifting and supportive and fun. The energy is addicting and we all just want to see each other get stronger and get better. This is one of my favorite places to be!

My experience with Stephen has been very positive. As a beginner, and a full time mother of many young kids, I wasn't sure what to expect of myself or my progress. But I am extremely happy with how far I've come. In the year I've been at YCB, I've competed 5 times, won 5 medals, as a masters athlete. I've gotten significantly stronger. I was a member of York County Barbell for about five months and it was an absolutely awesome experience. The gym is well-equipped with top-notch equipment! Stephen is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Even my girlfriend, who had never touched a barbell before, got involved and loved it. Unfortunately, due to work and time constraints, we had to end our membership, but our time at York County Barbell was one of the best gym experiences we've ever had. Highly recommended!

I just moved from Florida and I was really struggling with finding a gym that would meet my Olympic lifting needs. I'm so glad I pushed myself to check this gym out. Its given me more than a place to get strong. Lifting with ADD and panic attacks isn't easy. But here I can be myself, and Stephen works with me to tailor my lifts. He doesn't just focus on the weight, he focuses on you as a whole human being. What a great gym! Full setup for Oly lifting and also some specialized powerlifting tools. Compact but not sparse - the layout is cozy but comfortable and safe. My time at YCBB was by far the most progress I've made with my workout regiment and physique. Coach Steven will know immediately how to help you improve, and guide you to where you want to be. I haven't met anybody with more knowledge about the human body and weightlifting than Steven. Hours are flexible and even if it's busy you will get your moneys worth out of this gym. I highly recommend it.

Steve is an absolutely great coach! I so appreciate the way he stepped in to coach me at a local weightlifting meet, while my coach couldn’t be there. He is patient and kind and makes sure that you have everything you need to succeed! He is super knowledgeable about weightlifting and takes the time to explain his cues and helps to make sure you understand what he’s asking!
I wish I lived closer to drop into York County Barbell Club more often, but I know without a doubt that he is building a great club and community! I fell in love with lifting through CrossFit but with daily WOD’s, I had never put a major focus on just lifting. When York County Barbell opened, I made it a point to drop in and see what I could improve on through concentrating on the specific Olympic weightlifting movements. The attention and help I’ve received from Stephen have far exceeded my expectations. Stephen planned out a full workout-warmup, a skill as well as accessory work. He has made sure to pay attention to my form and has given me personalized tips for further improvements. Coach Stephen was one of the best coaches I’ve worked with on my Olympic lifting. He is able to pick out the smallest of details in my lifts to improve performance, and he gives pointed, simple, and differentiated cues for each athlete. Coach Stephan is a great weightlifting coach. I can’t say enough about his overall knowledge when it comes to fitness and training. He’s not only a great Olympic lifting style coach, he’s also great at power lifting and body building. He can work with you on an individual basis and come up with a program that will meet your own personal goals.
