i started training here in may 2022, and having JJ as a coach has been nothing short of amazing. he knows how to help me chase after my goals and maintain my overall health and well being, and it’s crazy how much stronger i’ve become since i began training here. can’t recommend him and this gym enough!

As someone who travels frequently, I have a very specific idea of what kind of powerlifting gym and atmosphere I’m looking for, and 495 Strength and Performance really ticked those boxes…owner was very prompt in responding to emails, gym had comp racks and powerlifting bars, and other lifters there were very welcoming and friendly. I was able to complete my workout and stay on track with my training, so I’ll definitely be back here!

Joining 495 Strength and Performance was one of the best decisions i’ve made in regards of athleticism and sports. Coaches at 495 give high quality training to each and every athlete that participates in their lessons. Not only do you learn how to get stronger, but you get taught to use efficient techniques in order to maintain safety while lifting weights. I’d recommend this to any student who is playing/trying out for sports and would want to get stronger, faster, and learn lifting technique to really stand out in and out the field!

Coach JJ runs an incredible gym. In terms of equipment, he has everything for the serious athlete, whether that's football, wrestling, strength sports, or what have you. This is a serious strength gym for serious people, and I love it.
However, if that's not enough, 495 is a very cordial and welcoming atmosphere. Yes, people sweat, bleed, groan, and lift frighteningly heavy weights, but it's also a place of kindness, humility, and respect.
I would suggest anything interested in pursuing athletic performance to check out 495. You won't be disappointed.

My son has really loved working with JJ. The class seems like a small community, my son comes back sharing advice and information he is excited about and he is learning technique on how to have proper form in the gym which will provide confidence in the long run.

wow! different feel from deadlifts than I've ever had. all in a good way. nothing hurt or too sore, but feel more sore in my upper back, neck, lats, hamstrings/glutes, tiny bit lower back. but like I'm using muscles I've never used before. I think I've always been too loose in my lifts....like not cue'ing pulling back my shoulder blades, having my chest upright, etc....really makes you use the entire body that way. Thanks for the awesome coaching!!!!

Lifted here for about 2 years and made a huge change in my life. Coach JJ took me from an underweight 140lb boy to a 195lb powerlifter lifting on the national level. Have many great memories at 495 Strength and Performance. Id definitely recommend lifting here!

JJ is great with our sons, aged 15 and 13. They look up to him and listen to him. They have gotten stronger, fitter, and more confident since they started training with him. He makes them put their phones away, and has helped our older son excel on his school crew team. Thanks JJ!

Place is awesome, nice racks, turf isn’t too rough. Tried to use some homemade stuff but bent the bar in half and then continued to violate the bathroom with vomit. Overall great experience

My 14 year old son has been working out with JJ for the past year. He came into the gym not knowing anything about lifting and is now confident in the gym. He has learned proper lifting technique, while getting stronger. My son tried another gym but felt the coach wasn't as knowledgeable as JJ. He looks forward to working out with JJ each week!

My son has been training with JJ for several years. He is an extraordinary coach and completely transformed my son's experience during COVID. With JJ's support, he has broken multiple Maryland state power lifting records (including his own) and was recently ranked nationally. JJ has helped my son continue to push himself to achieve more. He focuses on form and helps his clients train safely. He provides holistic support, offering guidance on food, self-care, and nutrition. He is flexible, reasonably priced, and professional. What's more, during a time when social interactions for teens ground to a halt, JJ helped create a vital social outlet and himself served as a mentor and a friend during what would have otherwise been an incredibly challenging year. Coach JJ is a rare and unique coach in a world where many coaches are burned out or on overload! Coach JJ is dedicated to each of his clients! He demonstrates a wealth of knowledge ranging from strength training, to nutrition, to overall well being of the mind and body! I found him when everything was shut down last year during COVID and has transformed my teenager into a dedicated, mindful, and focused athlete! JJ is an excellent trainer who really focuses on so much more than just building strength. Our son has worked with him for almost a year. I started training with Coach Jonathan from 495 Strength and Performance a month ago and I already am and feel stronger. I was able to go from doing around 15 chin-ups to 21. My 40yard dash time went from 5.6 to 5.3. My bench press, deadlift and squat also skyrocketed. I’m putting on mass thanks to him. He’s very professional, dedicated and he has experience.

I have been working out with JJ since 2018, both as part of the Saturday morning fitness class and for one-on-one sessions. I highly recommend his programs. I've gotten stronger and more flexible and improved my balance. I appreciate his community-based focus.
There are many Saturday mornings I don't want to get up and exercise but do because of the other people in the class. They're supportive and fun and keep me on track.
During the individual sessions I learn proper form, so I can push myself to improve but learn my limits so I avoid injury. Which is important to me! I'm at the other end of the age spectrum from his high school athletes and my goals are different. For example, I was surprised at how stiff my shoulders had become after years of working at a desk. Through exercises that focus on range of motion and weightlifting, I'm now mindful of using the right form when I carry groceries and other heavy items and it makes a difference. I can also reach higher to get items on shelves.
Another (sort of) good thing about JJ: he doesn't discriminate based on gender. I'm not a natural born exerciser but he doesn't let me off the hook. He pushes me to achieve my goals just like he pushes his male athletes to reach theirs.

Coach JJ is the only trainer that has been able to keep me moditvated and engaged for more than a few months. JJ has been my coach for almost 2 years in with his bootcamp ( 3 days a week) and strength training. I have seen real results in strength, energy and general well-being. I run 5Ks now which I was never able to do before in my 30s and 40s. JJ has been available to coach me with a individual plan while on vacation or at the office gym. He has also coached my son who had no fitness training prior and is very happy with his results. I can't say enough great things about Coach JJ and his methods.
