CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-eyh-rah) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art and self-defense discipline that brings together fighting techniques, acrobatics, dance, percussion, and songs. Capoeira is such an important art expression that it is part of the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Abada-capoeira is represented throughout Brazil and in over 50 countries.
In the DC, MD and VA area, Abada-capoeira is under the guidance of Mesttranda Yara, who has been a capoeira practitioner since 1982 and teaching since 1996, working with the most diverse groups: children, adolescents, adults, people with special needs, and the elderly.

Capoeira is fun and Abada-Capoeira DC is an amazing group to be a part of.
The practice of capoeira taught here offers a complete, inclusive exposure to the elements of the beautiful dance-fight-game, combining athleticism, music, culture and community. Mestranda Yara guides new students and seasoned capoeiristas through training and exposure to Brazilian culture and capoeira. Her passion for capoeira and the community is evident in training and regular community service events.
Like any athletic pursuit, the training will push your limits and strengthen your body. It took me months to get comfortable with the fundamentals and much of that was spent with sore glutes, sore soles, and disoriented with flexing my body and mind to flow in a “capoeira-way”, but it built balance, gave me new perspectives, and strengthened me inside and out.
Beware, if you’re like me, you may even fall in love with the music and philosophy, or find yourself exploring capoeira’s rich history.
Capoeira is a beautiful dance-fight-game offering opportunities to train extraordinary athleticism, strengthening body, balance, confidence, and identity. Abada Capoeira DC also builds connection through community around the DMV. Once you’ve experienced the energy and magic of the roda, I believe you’ll be hooked.

It's been year three for our son to be a part of Abada Capoeira in Chantilly location. I simply have no words to express how amazing the experience was! The sense of community and really learning what Capoeira is all about is what you get when you sign up. You never have to worry about learning the technical moves of Capoeira but you also will learn to understand its heart. Oh, and if you find yourself in a tough situation, this community will be right behind you supporting you!

Capoeira, to me, has many meanings. As a Brazilian, it was always important to make sure that this art form was thought with care to safety, knowledge of its history and heritage, as well as its techniques. After years of searching for the right time and place to start capoeira, I am very happy to have found Abada-Capoeira and Mestranda Yara. Abada-Capoeira is a international institution formed by amazing professionals with over 65000 members in 55 countries, organized as a corporation like structure that is able to keep to its roots and develop capoeira in all of its manny features in order to pass it on to its members not only as the art form but also spreading the Brazilian culture, language, music, spirit in all of its most noble forms. The quality of this institution and Professora Yara bring its members the best of capoeira to the DC metro area, just like it is done in Brazil, at its best capoeira centers. Unfortunately, in such a rare art form, it is easy to have unprepared people taking advantage of those trying to learn, and teaching it just wrong. Yara and Abada-Capoeira will not only teach you the art of capoeira, but will also teach you Portuguese, music, Brazilian culture, discipline, while making it safe, athletic and fun to all. No matter what age, young or old, sex, origin or background. I fully recommend Abada-capoeira DC and Professora Yara as the best capoeira program in the DC metro area.

I started with Abada DC in late summer/early fall 2012 on a whim and had no idea it would now be 2023 and i am still a member. It is an amazing group, really caring and knowledgeable teacher and lots of students of all backgrounds and body types and abilities and we all come together for the love of capoeira and it is beautiful. I have had 3 different surgeries and am still doing it and the teacher and community within all are so helpful and encouraging. I am also hard of hearing and the teacher is good at helping me best. She does this for every student she has, she is great at pivoting and finding a way to help each person learn and succeed. We also like to give back to our community with food drives, clothes drives, blood drive, road clean up. It's a great workout, way to learn Portuguese, learn new instruments, make new friends that become family, have lots of opportunities to travel to abada events worldwide. Join Abada DC, you will not regret it!!

I started my capoeira journey with ABADA DC about a year ago and I’m captivated by the art. The singing, the clapping, the Portuguese language, and sense of community made me feel like I found a 2nd home. I am grateful for all the people I’ve met from being a part of the organization and I highly recommend anyone who wants to not only work on their fitness, but be immersed in Brazilian culture!

Capoeira is by far the most unique martial art in existence. I have been part of the Abada Capoeira DC family for 14 years and can't emphasize enough how much you get out of joining this family. Yara's leadership is backed by 40 years of capoeira experience. She has been an amazing role model and as a result, I've seen students from all backgrounds and ages thrive, including myself. Training with Abada DC forced me to confront my shyness around having to sing in Portuguese and fight in the circle in front of others. I've also been blessed with the opportunity to embrace Brazilian culture and history, as well as train in Brazil. I look forward to taking advantage of the global Abada presence by visiting countries where other Abada groups train, another unique aspect from joining Abada DC!

Abada Capoeira DC is the best non-profit capoeira group in the DMV area. With classes in Chantilly, VA and Rockville, MD it's not hard building a close knit community of family, friends, and capoeiristas. I've been with ACDC for 13 years now under the instruction and guidance of Professora Yara and I've developed a vast knowledge, understanding, and application of capoeira as a martial art and as a multidisciplinary art that have exceeded my expectations. As a graduada, I know this is only the beginning for me and I'm proud to have come on this journey with all my camaradas and Professora. Whether it's the physicality, the strategic game, floreios, or music that brings you in, you'll definitely leave feeling inspired and thirsty for more!

Don't be put off joining a capoeira class because you're not a gymnast or acrobat. Beginners are not expected to be able to do cartwheels and handstands from the outset. However, your fitness will build from day one and after a few months of training, you might be surprised what you can do.
Joining this class was one of the smartest moves I made in my life.
