Here’s the truth: the gym itself is clean, high-quality, and well maintained but the cancellation and freeze policies are extremely predatory.
I was told I’d be able to freeze my membership if I wasn’t using it. When I actually tried to freeze, they hit me with a $150 non-refundable freeze fee for NOT using the gym, plus they continue to charge the full monthly dues, which they say will be “credited back” only at the end of a full year. Basically, you pay for nothing and just hope to get the money back later.
Please be careful about getting sold on the “luxury” pitch. If transparent billing matters to you, I would avoid this gym entirely.

Avoid this company like the plague:
A hard sell company that relies on highly attractive staff to overcome Shady business practices. They promised month-to-month capability for billing but when you try to cancel, suddenly management and online or even telephone capability to cancel is nowhere to be found. They do absolutely nothing on their 800 / customer service line other than to keep you on hold for 20 minutes plus then telling you to resolve it locally with the manager who suddenly can no longer be found. The sales staff is incentivized to seal the deal and be polite while you are still a member. Once you want to quit they treat you like a crazy ex.

Such an overrated gym. It has half the equipment and amenities of much less expensive locations. I didn’t find it to be very inclusive either.

I’ve been training with Chris Mooney at Equinox Bethesda, and I can confidently say he’s an exceptional trainer who has made a significant impact on my fitness journey. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable and a true subject matter expert in fitness and exercise science. His deep understanding of training techniques ensures that every session is tailored to my goals, whether it’s building strength, improving endurance, or enhancing overall wellness.
What sets Chris apart is his dedication and willingness to go above and beyond. He takes the time to explain the purpose behind each exercise, ensuring proper form to maximize results and prevent injury.
Chris’ encouraging and motivating demeanor creates a positive and uplifting environment, making every workout something to look forward to. He’s also highly adaptable, customizing plans to accommodate my schedule, fitness level, and any physical limitations.
Additionally, Chris is professional, approachable, and genuinely invested in his clients’ success. His passion for fitness is contagious, and his ability to push me while keeping sessions enjoyable has kept me consistent and motivated. I highly recommend Chris Mooney to anyone looking for a top-tier trainer who truly cares about their clients’ progress and well-being.

Below standard "luxury" gym that came crashing down when I was attempting to cancel my membership: Turns out even if you communicate via email that you want to cancel membership, they won't honor it. They'll also keep dodging your phone calls (looking at you two Justin, Tyler), so they can continue to bill :)
Given that they are consistently sending me text messages to get me to re-join (why would I after all the communication issues), with some very generous incentives, my guess is they aren't doing very well.
Great job Tyler Hayes! :)

Listen to the reviews for this location. Communication was extremely unclear from the get-go. Sign up was extremely frustrating as they processed it incorrectly and repeatedly called us to get payment information. When we looked to cancel because of the issues, GM was on vacation with nobody else to reply. GM finally cancelled but still charged us for a full month while we didn't even use the facilities at all.

This one star review is only and only because of the incompetent management my husband and I have experienced at Bethesda location. And I am not surprised to see that a lot of other people have written similar reviews about this location.
Before Bethesda, I had been a member for more than 3 years at Tysons and DC Sports club and the management was always quick to respond and resolve any issues.
But here at Bethesda, trying to get this management to resolve issues is like banging your head against the wall. My husband was recently charged $150 for a personal training session he never took without his authorization. When he reported that he was told that he would be refunded within a few business days. This happened in late February and here we are in late April and despite of multiple calls and emails, there has been no resolution.
Equinox Bethesda definitely shows predatory behavior. When it comes to taking your money, they will call and email you multiple times and charge you without your authorization. But when it comes to paying you back, they will make you cry.
Now the gym is great and instructors and classes are great and given my experience with other Equinox locations , I wouldn’t recommend to not join Equinox. But if you care about your money, you will have to practice caution because Bethesda location is pretty nefarious and would charge you unfairly and make you beg before they return you your money.
I recommend reading reviews on management provided by other people to make sure you know what you are signing up for.

Like many others through equinox, this location has been known to overcharge you past your cancellation date. I will not go into detail and waste my breath because they already said they would try to resolve the situation and did not. Their Assistant Yvonne Vierra, GM Ross Poirier, former GM Paul and District Manager of the DC area did absolutely nothing. So I WARN you before signing up for what you think is a luxurious club with staff that might care about you. They do NOT! The St. James which is right down the street has way better amenities, staff, and ambiance. They have great classes and a recovery area that can be included in you membership all for the same price that Equinox charges you and tries to steal from you.

I love this gym. Been in and around gyms and barbell clubs all my life and its nice for once not to worry about getting a staff infection from the equipment, the floor or other areas in the gym. It is kept immaculately by a maintenance staff that is constantly cleaning it. I hope that they get compensated well because it is by far the best feature of this gym. I joined because they have a platform where I can lift and don't have to drive 4 hours a day to to get my lifts in. I wish they had more than one olympic bar, but hey given all they other ways gyms can fail this is a small price to pay. Speaking of price, it is pricey. I feel it when the $210 fee comes out of my account every month but my calculation has been that its worth it. The trainers are some of the best I've seen; the trainers are the second best feature of this gym not only do they work in the gym but many also train their as in they actually like working out themselves. The equipment is okay, I don't use the machines much, the lay out is optimal in that I don't feel crowded when I work out, I've never had to wait for the platform. All in all it's probably the plushest gym I've ever inhabited but at 60+ this is good thing.

Came for a tour thinking of joining the gym. While the folks working there are very nice, facilities itself are rundown and do not match the steep price tag they are trying to charge. Showers are run down, pool tile is cracked, there is rust and hair everywhere - not as "ZEN" as it is being presented. Also, locking somebody into a 12 months contract seems unreasonable in lieu of the recent pandemic experience and in general is a sign of business weakness. It seems that Equinox is on its way out otherwise why would they not be investing into their facility in the most prime location at the DMV? Unfortunate.

Update: The new management team have been more responsive and have tried to ensure cleanliness. They have implemented surveys which they do follow up on.
There was a time when I could justify the price of Equinox. I valued the cleanliness, high-quality equipment, service, and classes. Today, the only reasons we're still members are the weekend classes and some excellent trainers. However, I'm fed up with dirty showers, roaches, and even parasite-like worms in the steam room. It's frustrating that my one email in two years went unanswered.

I walked in hoping to join but was met with a snobby crew who wouldn't even let me explore the gym without paying for a daily pass. I came ready to sign up, but the way they looked me up and down and refused to let me do a walk-through before deciding was a huge red flag. I had heard great things from my friends about this place, but was greeted with a dismissive attitude.

Would not recommend this gym as it definitely does not live up to the price tag. Classes were good, but gym and facilities are subpar. They don’t even have proper water fountains and they are always breaking down. How can an Equinox not have up to date water fountains? Customer service is far below par. They will reach out like crazy when you’re signing up, after that good luck getting help with anything. Called multiple times trying to set up a Pilates session, every time I called I was told someone will follow up with me shortly, never got a call. There are other gyms in this area, check them all out before you consider this.

Unfortunately, I can't say that I had a pleasant experience with Equinox.
I was looking for a gym in my area, and I decided to get a tour at Equinox Bethesda and try one of their group fitness classes.
While I liked their pilates class and the gym itself looked quite decent to me, I was absolutely turned off by the person who sells memberships.
After I reviewed the membership agreement and read reviews for the gym more closely, I decided not to sign up. I sent a text to the person who gave me the tour thanking them for meeting with me and letting them know that I was not going to become a member for now.
Immediately after that I received a call where I was asked why I did not want to become a member. I politely and clearly explained what my reasons were, but it already did not seem right to me.
After that, I received three calls, three voice mails, and an email within 24 hours trying to convince me sign up to the gym.
It felt to me like they were trying to force me to become a member. At this point, I regretted that I even went to check this place out. Their way of selling memberships is extremely pushy.
I am not sure what is going on with this gym and its staff, but I definitely do not recommend going there even for a tour.

Started off as a nice experience until I got injured and had to cancel my membership. Barely responsive to emails and so many hidden fees.
Contacted them in November and they responded that my membership will be active until 1/1. Paid for the month of December, which is understandable. But they charged me again 12/25 for a month’s membership fee when my membership will be terminated 1/1.
I don’t even bother sending them another email because I know it won’t be resolved. I’ll just have to take another $210 hit as a result of poorly selecting a gym.

After years of being a member, I've had to end my membership to Equinox as it no longer lives up to the standard of a high performance gym. In addition to membership, I am familiar with Equinox corporate having brokered brand deals with the Shop as a marketing executive and know the Bethesda location is compromised. As a daily lap swimmer, pool conditions sharply deteriorated when aqua sculpt classes were added to the schedule. Lifeguards fail to monitor the lanes and are paying more attention to their phones than the fact some people are using multiple accessories and flailing around while sharing lanes. I was nearly kicked in the head twice by someone in floaties and a snorkel whose broad doggy paddle crossed over into my side of the lane as I swam laps. Not very high performance sounding? No, it isn't. Extremely unsafe and potential for injury? Yes. Equinox could have remedied some of the issues by adding a sign up for the pool or instituting lap swims times like other gyms but problem solving does not seem possible with management. The current manager, Ross, did not even bother to respond to emails regarding these very unsafe pool conditions. The pool runs several degrees too hot, as well, at the insistence of a few members who don't want the pool to function in a standard athletic manner. Ultimately, if Equinox Bethesda wants to operate in a substandard way their prices and branding should reflect that.

I have been at Equinox Bethesda for almost 3 years. The membership doesn’t give you full access to the gym machines as their private trainers book 3 to 4 machines at the same time, marking them with towels and water bottles, so you are not allowed to finish your training until they are finished with their private trainees. I complained for more than 10 times about the same issue, while the management called few times to confirm that nobody is allowed to book more than one machine, no steps taken from the management.

I have been a member for several years and while I appreciate the cleanliness and "Zen" atmosphere of the gym, I am cancelling my membership as the monthly fees continue to go up every year. I pay $60 more per month ($720 per year) compared to when I joined a few years ago. Notably, despite this massive increase in membership fees, hours of operation are more limited and multiple pieces of equipment have been removed since the COVID shutdown. I can no longer justify the $$$$$ monthly fees for a gym that is frankly not better than any other.

Love this gym! I know it’s one the pricer gyms out there but what makes this place is the staff, everyone from the managers to trainers, to facilities are so welcoming and a pleasure to see. My bf and so have been going to this location for about 2.5 years now and bc we work out 2-3x a week we’ve gotten to know everyone well. Lol so much so we joke we’re all family. Anyway the gym does get packed between 4-6 but there’s plenty of room to work out and trainers are super helpful

Racist business, “racial tag team in place”; African American (AA’s) members are asked to check-in (while electronic system fails) - Caucasian’s are not approached, stopped, nor addressed. I was approached twice by the same AA employee with extra long eyelashes. AA’s are treated and accused as if they are not members. The first insulting approach she was proved wrong. It was an insult; so, I stopped going to this facility. Two months later - the same employee approached me again.
Caucasian’s rarely check-in; and are not asked. Sign-in system does not work. Informed that “managers are never present at the facility”. No managers are ever available. Find a different honest and fair fitness club.

I had a massage at the spa with Alain. This was my second time and he is knowledgeable and friendly. I greatly enjoyed my service with him. I knocked off a star because of the payment process. Both times for my massage, I’ve booked something expecting to use either a gift card or a discount offered by equinox that then cannot be honored. Alain does great work, but I’d say make sure you know for sure what you are paying beforehand.

The facility and training are solidly average, but their unethical business practices when leaving the gym are inexcusable. Be sure to get them to sign a written copy of your 60-day termination notice, take a picture of the signed notice so you have it on your phone, and pay with a credit card that will help you dispute fraudulent charges.

This review is for the Spa at Equinox Bethesda. I’d give the gym 5 out of 5 stars. I booked a 110 minute massage today. The therapist arrived at the gym 15 minutes late and then I waited on the table for another 10 minutes while he set up. After 55 to 60 minutes he tells me we are done. The massage was ok but literally half the time I booked and he was going to charge me for 80 minutes - quite a bit more than I received. After I pointed it out the front desk charged for a 50 minute session but I walked away feeling not particularly respected as a customer. Wouldn’t recommend.

This review is specifically regarding my experience training with Nick Cawthon. Nick is an exceptional trainer and I could tell right from the get go that he was a cut above other trainers I have worked with given his strength and conditioning background. He has worked with collegiate athletes and weekend warriors alike, but what really separates Nick from the rest is how invested he is in you- everything from your consistency to your technique and everything in between. He brings unique teaching techniques and cues from his previous coaching experience which have really helped me (as someone who overthinks things) to simplify an exercise and focus on certain key aspects to nail down the technique. After working with Nick for several weeks I feel better and have more energy than I have in years but more importantly I have hope that I can get back into shape again. If you have the chance to work with him I highly recommend it!

Figured I'd give a nice honest review. This gym is extremely clean, the ice cold towels are a phenomenal touch. The amount of trainers walking around is insane( I don't mean that in a negative way, but sometimes when there are 10+ trainers on the floor it is a little much lol). I'll never be thrilled about paying upwards of $200 for a gym membership but It is 5 minutes away from my apartment so it works for me. I don't really take advantage of the classes so I can't take that away from the gym. I'm pretty happy that I haven't been harassed by trainers, but that may be because I am familiar with working out In a gym, I don't know. The people who work the front desk are great as well as the gentleman who works the counter at the store, he is literally always in a good mood. I have been there about a month and pretty much have 0 complaints and I feel like the deal I got initially was very fair. I'll be honest I had already toured the gym a few years ago so when I went back this time I had my dog and told the guy I wanted wanted join and to get me.in and out as quick as possible lol. Sidenote....he let my dog sit on the floor while I signed up which was super nice. If there are any negative reviews regarding this gym that aren't related related billing I'd be very surprised. Some people just like to complain...if anyone from equinox reads this, please can we add some heavy bags and or speedbags somewhere or whattttttt...

Very spacious facility including great amenities, such as eucalyptus towels and sauna with very experienced instructors for the most part.
I’ve studied with Susan Hanan at WYC so it was nice to see her at Equinox too. I’m used to boutique studios and found a large gym rather intimidating and a little corporate. But once you get used to familiar faces and certain instructors it’s not so bad. I’d give 5 stars except management could be a little more straightforward or friendlier but they are really responsive to feedback.

Equinox Bethesda is an amazing gym! It is clean, has updated and working equipment and offers many classes along with amenities . The Staff at the Bethesda location regardless of the department are some of the most knowledgeable, genuine and quality people I have encountered in all my years of using several different gyms. To me this is very important because their positive energy and knowledgeable instruction make the gym such a fun and comfortable place to train. The energy is uplifting and contagious. This is not a gym that is going to offer donuts but it also won't judge you for your experience level of working out. This is a gym where the Staff are extremely passionate about their jobs and they want the members to have the best experience possible when they train. If you really want to train and be around others who have the same mindset and motivation to be better please visit, take the tour and join the club . I am confident that you will be glad you did. Oh yeah and make sure you say “hi”, look forward to training with you. Cheers

I've been working out here since September 2019 and have absolutely loved it. The staff is very professional (they even greet me by name every time I come in) and it is never crowded outside of Monday evenings.
Since the pandemic, they have all hands on deck - all the time and go out of their way to clean and sanitize. This place looks better than even newer non-Equinox gyms in the area.
Totally recommend with no hesitation. I might ask the powers-that-be to bring back the normal hours from before COVID (they close an hour earlier now because of the pandemic) but the extra time is really useful for someone like me who works until 6 or 7 most evenings. Fix this and its now a 6-Star Review.

Although the facility itself is beautiful, members at all times should be treated respectfully by the cleaning staff, who should be doing their job. They should not be following members around and harassing them. Although I have complained at least twice to staff regarding this, again last night the same woman repeatedly followed me around rather than clean. I was finally reprimanded by the cleaning woman for taking too many paper towels. Is Equinox hiring cleaning staff or paper towel police? I have never been treated so rudely by cleaning staff. Although this issue should have been resolved a long time ago, it hadn’t. When I sought out a manager yet again, a third time, the manager told me maybe I should ask the front desk for some tissues! 😐 Is it possible to just work out without being subject to bullying behavior in this club?

Best gym I've ever gone too, no ifs or buts about it. Equipment is always on point, staff is ALWAYS great (at least to me they have been top notch all the time), and facilities in general are just immaculate. I've been a member for some time now, and I have no complaints. The price might be "high" for some people, but that's when you don't take in consideration what Equinox in general has to offer. It's a great company in general. I've had the opportunity to workout in several other locations in the States and Canada and I always leave with a smile in my face.
Equinox is the best high end gym company there is.

I was a member for 3 years. Great facility, nice staff, and great classes. My cancelation process was smooth and painless. The reason why I cancelled was because of the crazy parking garage you will use (across the street). Plan to add on about 20 minutes if you come mid day during lunch or dinner...Especially the weekends. Also, you pay for parking and you will endure the painful wait of watching brainless folks 'back into' their parking spot while a line of cars wait. The second reason is my membership kept going up gradually. At the end, I was paying about $18 more than I originally signed for. If these two things are not a big deal to you then you will love this gym!

Don’t bother if you have limited time in the area. The cancellation process is a nightmare. I ended up paying 2 months extra after I travelled to my university. The exact same thing happened to my friend(we signed up together). Management is terrible, however the advisors are almost always willing to work something out. In all honesty, the gym is fantastic, but interaction with the management could lead to conflict. As a college student, I ended up paying for way more than was promised by the advisor, which was a huge blow to my bank account. I personally swapped gyms and am much happier at lifetime fitness on seven locks. The location is great, the equipment is fantastic, and you can pause your membership very easily. If you’re in the area and can spare the money, go for it, otherwise, look elsewhere.

I’m a former member and now I’m getting emails from Equinox asking me to return. I think the Bethesda equinox is an attractive and clean facility with a variety of classes and access to qualified personal trainers. However it did not meet my needs for a few reasons:
—it’s expensive, especially if you hire a personal trainer (which I did for a while).
—the classes kept changing. I know they do this on purpose for variety, but I want a regular schedule I can stick to.
—most of the classes I tried were too hard for me (I’m in my 60s), and seemed targeted to younger people.
—there are other fitness centers in Bethesda that are closer to where I live, and I like to walk rather than drive.
I would consider going back if they had classes designed for older people and dropped their prices, perhaps they could have a senior rate. Some dance aerobics classes would be a great addition also.

Have been a member for about a month now and am very happy with my experience.
The staff & other members have all been extremely courteous and, on occasion, have even come over to talk about what I’m up to. My membership advisor has reached out a few times to make sure everything is going well and has been very accommodating in helping me get in extra spin classes. They have even gone as far as to email and congratulate me on being “hardcore” (that’s hilarious) after a particularly active week.
Currently I do not do weights or machines, but have never seen the main floor so busy that I couldn’t do a loop.
My main focus—and main reason for joining—is the classes. The instructors are all great, but specifically: Dave Slikker (Studio Cycling), Jessica Lang (ANTHEM & Cycle Beats), and Susan Hanan (Alignment Flow Yoga) have made it 100% worth joining. If you are on a trial membership, I highly suggest trying to get in at least one of those—as long as you don’t take my favorite bike!

Bought several items from the shop. One had a tag that was removed while I tried it on because the metal clasp was stabbing me. Asked specifically if I could return -- was told yes! -- and bought a few extra things so I could figure out what went with the pieces I already had. When I tried to return one (the one that the tag had been removed from since its metal piece stabbed me) they wouldn't let me. When I spoke to the Juliette, the manager, (after waiting for her for 25 min), she treated me like I was lying and trying to scam them and was rude to me. No one would have ever told me I could return something because that was not store policy. They did, and even convinced me to buy an extra outfit since there was no risk. Juliette finally gave me store credit, which I don't want. Never want to buy anything from this place ever again.

I called them to cancel membership at least 2 months before expiration and they confirmed that with me. what happened was I checked my Amex account by chance to look up something else but noticed this company has been still charging my credit card... they are very dishonest and I will take an action soon. they shouldn't treat us like that. my suggestion to my neighbors is that it would be better look around, because there are so many fitness centers around with a good customer service, highly ranked trainer and equipments plus reasonable price with no restriction for cancellation.

Damon Foster (Ballet Barre) and Gia-Ninh Chuang (Pilates) may be one of the most professional and informed instructors in our area. I look forward to their classes because of them! The purposely dim lit cycling room coupled with instructor Lindsey Hutterer's motivation and good music (sound system is awesome) make the otherwise challenging class bearable. The gym is super clean all the time, the staff is consistently kind and the class variety appeals to me. It doesn't hurt that the refrigerated eucalyptus towels are waiting for me either. It has a community feel to it and oh, the spa. I know people who don't belong to the gym who go to the spa b/c of the staff. Glad I joined.

One star because I absolutely have to.
I really enjoyed my memebership here all the way up until cancellation.
The process was so invasive and ridiculous you'd think you were working with NASA on a space exploration. Things that absolutely were not their business was continually asked about.
I had the displeasure of being charged wrongly for two months, when pointing this out to Victoria pagonis from Bethesda instead of fixing it, It took nearly 2 weeks of proving the charges were not right where and continually asking to speak to someone else before the refund was agreed apon. I asked when I would see the funds hit my account. She said 5-7 business days. Estatic I wouldn't have to deal with this company or Victoria anymore I waited. On the 6th business day I followed up with Victoria that the funds would be in my account the following day. She proceeded to tell me it had only been 3 business days. When I asked how that's possible when the cancellation and refund being processed took place 11 (full) days, and 8 (business days) later she didn't respond. I JUST WANT TO BE DONE DEALING WITH THIS COMPANY.
I moved to California, a full 3000 plus miles away and it's been over a month and Victoria continues to change dates and then refuse to respond. The negligence is astounding. Customer service here is severely lacking but only when it comes to cancellation due to relocating or refunds of wrongly charged membership dues. This is my third wrongly charged membership due, one was in the middle of my contract and took close to a month to get refunded and this one has taken close to 2 weeks now, still waiting on it . I honestly can't recommend going here unless you know you're never cancelling your membership or relocating in which case, enjoy but know Victoria and Brad both will ignore calls and emails when you're disastisfied.

This is the only gym where I feel motivated to workout in regularly. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable. Equinox is always kept extreamly clean and tidy. They offer a variety of classes so working out is never boring. The lighting, music, freshly laundered towels, steam room, and pool make it a pleasure to visit every day. It’s my home away from home.

It's a good gym. The staff is friendly and nice. Very clean and it does not smell like a gym. Great showers. Never used a trainer so I can't comment on any of them.

Note the 45 day cancellation policy!
This gym is not nearly on the level it was when it opened in 2012. Disappointed by the lack of variety in classes and mediocre trainers. Jennifer Blackburn is NO Adrienne Morgan.
