We absolutely love Goldfish Swim School in Rockville! The Mini 2 instructors are simply fantastic. They are so patient, encouraging, and truly make learning to swim fun for the little ones. My son had a hard time adjusting, but they took the time to build his confidence in the water and create such a positive environment each week.

The management team is always professional, kind, and willing to go above and beyond to make sure families feel supported. They communicate clearly, keep everything organized, and you can tell they genuinely care about the kids’ progress and comfort.

I cannot say enough great things about this swim school and the staff at this location! From the very beginning, the environment has felt so welcoming and comforting—especially for the little ones. You can tell the staff has strong bonds with one another, and that teamwork shines through in how learnable, teachable, and kid-friendly they are.

My son wasn’t warming up during his very first class, but the staff went above and beyond to ease his nerves. One of them, Shaq, pulled him aside and patiently explained—at just his 2-year-old level—how much fun swimming would be, and by the end, he was smiling and splashing along! I’ve seen majority of their staff take this same kind, reassuring approach with other first-time swimmers, and it makes such a difference.

Makayla is absolutely wonderful with the infants. She has a natural, calming presence that puts babies at ease while also helping parents feel confident and equipped to support their little swimmers. My kids have truly progressed so much since we started here, and the staff deserves all the credit.

My daughter had the pleasure of working with Taniyah as her instructor, and we just love her! She’s so encouraging and fun, which keeps my daughter motivated and excited for every class. Sofia is usually the friendly face we see during our late-night classes—always welcoming, helpful, and accommodating with schedule changes. Shaq does a fantastic job supervising; he’s attentive, quick to respond when needed, and always ensures safety is the top priority. During one class, my daughter had an emergency, and he handled it calmly and with genuine care for her well-being.

Last but definitely not least, Nina, the manager, is phenomenal. You can clearly see her passion for both her staff and the children. She’s very hands-on, approachable, and her positive energy fills the entire swim school. Nina also represents the swim school at community events we’ve attended which is how we got to the school , like the recent Back to School event, where their table stood out and drew lots of attention. She’s such a natural people person and makes everyone feel welcome.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience here. This location has been such a blessing for our family, and I truly appreciate the amazing staff who make it so special. Highly recommend!

Our son had his first class recently, and we're extremely impressed with this entire operation so far. Several things stand out:
1) The facility is beautifully designed, organized, clean, and well maintained. It's friendly and inviting to young children, especially in what could be a scary new experience.
2) Front desk staff--extremely friendly and helpful, both in the initial text contact as well as when we arrived for the first class. We were given a tour, a welcome bag of goodies (and not just cheap goodies, but nice swag, including goldfish crackers, a ribbon, a little goldfish toy, etc.).
3) Swim staff--impressive! The deck supervisor (Mr. Deacon) figured out who we were and came over while our son was in the class to introduce himself and ask if we had any questions. The coach that was listed on the class had went back to school, but the substitute coach (Mr. Geronimo) was phenomenal--very safety conscious, patient with a kid who kept kicking water up, and gentle with all of the kids. Mr. Deacon explained to us who the new coach will be, which was good to know so that we're not surprised with different coaches and no communication. Also, the lifeguards were all super-focused, yet noticed the little details (our son loss his goggles that were sitting on his head and she noticed them and asked the coach to get them after the class was done--our son didn't need them during class after all).

The uniform helpfulness, friendliness, and care that the staff showed reminds me of upper end hospitality (in select hotels, restaurants, etc.). I don't know if all of the Goldfish Swim Schools operate like this, but we were extremely impressed with the Rockville location and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice introduction (or skill development) to swimming for their child.

My kids love coming here for swim classes. The instructors are good with kids and know how to hold their attention. Clean facility (bathrooms and changing rooms). One star off because finding parking can be a challenge but I guess that’s anywhere around Rockville Pike. Definitely come at least 30 minutes before your class to allow for circling the parking lot to find parking. With that said there is a parking lot off to the side that is a few minutes walk.

We've gone to this location for 5 weeks now and have been impressed. The set up is conducive to learning (warm water, warm room, loads of encouragement) and making the most of the lesson time. My kids have been going to this Goldfish location since COVID and they love it so we all love it. My kids have gone to other Goldfish locations in the past and I didn't like that there wasn't much consistency with the staff and that they didn't seem to be learning much. As a result, when I saw this location pop up near my house I was a bit skeptical, but I'm glad I decided to give it a try anyway since it was nearby. Very friendly staff and I love the consistency and diversity at this location (although I recognize that it's the type of job that lends itself to higher turnover so it is a good reflection of management that the staff is pretty consistent despite this). We love Taylor and have known her for years at this point, my kids always light up when they see her. I could go on, but point is this is a great location and it's worth checking out.

The instructors are amazing! The facility is comfortable and immaculate. Our two young sons were nervous about starting, but we have now been swimming for around seven months, and they can't wait to get in the pool every week. They went from being unable to swim independently and afraid to having absolute confidence and ability in the pool. They have an excellent star grading system to track your child's progress in their app. They are always happy to answer questions. Above all is their dedication to safety and making sure your child is 100% ready before they move to the next level. We wish we had started them sooner. When I asked the manager to observe a lesson to help with one of our kid's anxiety, she personally worked with the instructor on a plan that would help him grow. Today, our older kid can swim the width of the pool and do so many things! Our younger son is doing great too. I would recommend getting there early for lessons as the parking lot does fill up quickly. Overall a great experience and a very well thought out and run business.

The facility is very clean and the staffs are nice however there is no consistency in coaches. These guys had a package deal running, posted on their website. I called twice to buy the special package price. The second time I got a call back saying the package (still on the website) was no longer valid (apparently expired between my two calls) and the new price was 20% more. They would not honor the posted deal. Felt too shady for us to sign up after that.

Updating to say it is fine not to run a special but then don't advertise there is a special 🤷🏽‍♀️

UPDATE: I had previously mentioned that our son had progressed in the program, but that there are two women, one in a blue Lexus SUV and the other in a white Lexus SUV, who always park in the handicap spot illegally.

Goldfish responded with:
Response from the owner5 months ago
Thank you for allowing us to help your son become a confident swimmer! We're delighted to know he's making waves of progress during his time with us. However, we're sorry to learn that some members are abusing the handicapped parking spaces. Please let us know when this occurs. We want to make your experience with us as Golden as possible.
Goldfish Swim School - Rockville

Yesterday, the BLUE SUV not only parked illegally, but parked so close to my car. Coincidentally, there was BLUE paint on my rear passenger door.
I tried to confront the lady verbally when she came out and she ignored us. Her car was so close to ours that she couldn't get back into her car, so she sat in her own passenger seat talking on the phone instead.
I called the Rockville police, who said they were busy. I called Goldfish from the parking lot and the staff came to the window, looked, then walked away again.

The instructors for the infant classes are very good, and it's great for getting babies comfortable in the water. What's infuriating is their token system. We pay monthly for one class per week. If I cancel for a week, I get a make-up token, which can be used for a different class during the week. That's fair. But if THEY cancel on us, we still get charged for that week and get another make-up token. It's absolutely ridiculous to still charge me for THEIR cancellation.
Edit: As you can see from their response, they cancelled, but I still paid. And they don't let you use these tokens for your regularly scheduled classes, only for alternate days. Can you imagine if other businesses worked this way? If you have to close for any reason, that's considered a cost of doing business. Oh, and they told me that they "gifted" me the tokens. Y'all, don't spend money with these people!

Overall, the program seems well run and my son has been progressing for the four months he has been enrolled.  However, the classes are not 30 minutes, they are 25 minutes, and the marketing should probably ethically and perhaps even legally reflect this detail.  For our recent 9 am Sunday class, for example, the kids are welcomed into the pool promptly at 9 am but the class actually starts closer to 9:02 am once everyone is in the water.  On the back end the class ends usually at about 9:26 am so there is time for turnover and the 9:30 am classes.  Upon receiving an autogenerated feedback request I submitted the following about this issue but did not receive a response, which is not positive. On the other hand when I offered other unrelated constructive feedback in person I received a good response.

Feedback to franchisee described above:

I recommended advertising that your classes are 25 minutes vice 30 or build in some time in between class sessions to actually have 30 minutes of instruction.  In addition, in my son's recent class, he was teed up to do a new drill (gliding and floating on his back) for the first time and then the whistle blew at 9:26 am and the class was immediately dismissed, which prevented my son from doing that new drill.  I recommend finishing the last pupil's drill when the whistle blows instead of just abruptly ending the class no matter what is happening.

Today, My eldest (who has a hard time with change) was extremely resistant to entering the pool with a new teacher and a new swim lane!. Her original teacher, Devin, was down on her level talking to her when he saw her upset and he came from the front desk, he wasn’t even on the pool deck and he came to talk to her. Taylor (another teacher) saw what was going on, knew her by name and stepped right in. She was receptive to the suggestion of me exiting and her handling it and before I turned around the tears were going away and she was in the pool. These teachers have a level of care while in the pool and even when the child is hesitant to get in the pool that is amazing. I can’t tell you, as a parent, how much that means to know your child is well cared for. My Stella is thriving in swimming and goldfish and their teachers are incredible!

Grace is 3 and has been going to goldfish since she was 2. Sebastian was the first teacher she had at her first ever class at Goldfish and she adores him! She even asks about him outside of class! Grace has a new teacher now and Today, while in her class, she got scared and started to cry. She has an on and off fear of being underwater and not having the fail safe of an adult nearby. Sebastian, who wasn’t even her teacher today, saw her crying and he was there to talk to her and took the time to what I can only assume was reassure her of her own abilities. I watched this interaction and realized that my 3 year old not only listened to him (which is saying a lot because #1 she’s 3 and #2 she is incredibly strong willed) but she trusted him. She gave him a high five, got right back in the pool and then I saw smiles from her. I am thankful for such an amazing teacher who sees her and her fears and works to overcome them on her time. He’s encouraging to her and as a parent I am grateful. Goldfish is just an outstanding swimming school. I would recommend it to everyone and have.

They force your kids to dip underwater even when the kids say they are uncomfortable with it.
If you care about your kids do not take them. Get a real swim coach that can give 1:1 attention. My son nearly drowned twice and hated going there. He ended up throwing up both times; shutting the pool down for the day. We got him a coach and he is not only swimming but having fun with it.

Both my kids have been doing this school about six months. It has proven to be mostly a waste of money and time for us. With classes 25minutes and four kids per class, that comes to about 6 minutes dedicated to your child. The teacher turnover is very high so almost every class is a new teacher. Therefore there is no relationship there or good memory of where the child was from the last class. My children have progressed little from where they started. The extra class tokens expire and are not transferable, so we are likely to just cut our losses and sign up with a regular private instructor somewhere else.

Enrollment is easy. Staff are friendly. Pool is quite crowded. In 30 min, with 3 to 4 kids per lane, the kids hardly get a chance to practice. Effective time swimming/in water would be less than 5-10 min. Had high hopes but unfortunately not for us.

Great swim facility! Always clean and the employees are so kind. If your child is new to swimming or even old to it then go with Mr David. He is the best. Very engaging and always keeping it fun for the kids and helping them learn along the way. My child has improved so much because of the swim school. So thank you to everyone in this facility for helping her improve her swim skills and being confident in the water.

The facility is extremely well run and unbelievably clean. I'm so glad this is where my kids take lessons.

The instructors were great, but the class was always the same and very repetitive. Sometimes class started late and ended early.
On the business side of things, I find their “policies” to be sneaky or just plain un accommodating.
My daughter wasn’t a huge fan of the class, so I decided to cancel before the next month’s billing. I was told I could always use the makeup classes “tokens”, so I proceeded with the cancellation.
Months later I go to schedule her makeup classes and now I’m told she needs to be enrolled (and paying for classes) in order to use our makeup tokens. They said that I was told the wrong information but oh well. That I can talk to a manager if I want, but the result would be the same. Unsure of why our account is accessible but not able to be placed in a makeup class.

Over all we have had a good experience. More than anything we are happy to see the progress our daughter has made. She feels comfortable in the water. The instructors have been great in exception with our most recent visit. The instructor made our daughter cry 2 times during the lesson which had never happened before. She was close to her face and would appeared to have an attitude as she spoke to her. We approached the front desk to talk about the situation, just to find out that this instructor was the manager. In our opinion that was unprofessional and or proper way top treat a student. The staff overall has been super friendly but was shocked to hear this was the manager. Will continue to keep a close eye on the lessons and hope that this does not happen again or we will be looking for a new place to go to.

I got my niece today for a class and we didn’t have a good experience.
My sister is pregnant (expecting twins)
My niece couldn’t stay inside the pool for 10 minutes, when the class started the instructor used a blue stuffed animal that looked weird and I think that this made her scary. I tried some calming techniques with her but no luck. Then my sister said that they don’t make up this class (which made me think that this was not fair).
Also my sister couldn’t change her classes to be on Saturdays, só her father could be present and make this experience more pleasant.
Facilities are amazing, the staff that helped us is new and she is not aware of the rules and regulations yet. The other staff watched my sister struggling and did not step up to support her colleague and resolve my sister issues.
I had a poor experience in terms of staff and customer service. I really hope you guys can train staff and make it better because it is super cute place.

Do not recommend. They are worse than a gym when it comes to billing and leaving.
Makeup tokens are a joke and improperly messaged.
Do not recommend this business as their practices are neither transparent nor customer friendly.
Instructor was fine. Have found better elsewhere.
Staff is not empowered to improve customer experience. Spoke with manager and she took no initiative to work to find a solution- Instead she responded with snarky comments and shifted blame.

I saw the good reviews and enrolled my kids in their swim school. They charge so much but the quality of the classes is so poor. They divide the pool horizontally to maximize capacity and there are 8 kids in one horizontal, narrow lane. They “teach” 4 kids for hardly 30 mins and the kids are screaming and crying and it’s loud! If you are charging $140 for 4 classes, at least provide some quality. It’s a zoo in there!

After having a friend recommend this school because her daughter had so much fun and was learning so much, I decided to do the free trial class for my son since he loved water and seeing how long he could hold his breath under water, but didn't know how to actually swim.

We did our trial class in May and have been enrolled ever since. My son has so much fun in class and has learned a ton in the past few months. He had to use the floating bar to help swim across the pool for a few weeks and now is swimming across all on his own! It's amazing to see that much change in such a short period of time really. I was nervous as to how much could he really learn in a 30 minute class once a week, but obviously my fears were squashed by how much he has retained.

The instructors he's had (two now since he has advanced to the next level) have been great and are very good at keeping the kids engaged in class. You can see how much fun they have while teaching as well. And just sitting and watching the other instructors, you can tell they are all equally as happy to be teaching and seeing the kids progress.

I never took a swim class myself growing up and haven't been to any other swim schools for a comparison, but I would recommend Goldfish to anyone who wanted to get their kiddos in a swim class to learn basics and beyond!

**This photo I included was during our trial class in May. He would NEVER let me teach him how to float and he just hopped right in and floated away like he'd been doing it forever. Now he does it unassisted and can even swim backwards on his own. <3

They operate like a gym, in that underhanded sneaky way where they tell you you get a discount and you sign up, and then bam, your one initial charge goes though. Then, there’s a second one and it’s way higher. Thing is, at least gyms have the decency to refund you if it’s clear you weren’t using their facilities BECAUSE YOU MOVED. A lot of gyms will try to keep you in their clutches if you move somewhere that’s near another one, but there are NO goldfish schools anywhere near us. They lost nothing. I paid $57 then another $120+ for my child to go to ONE 30 minute lesson. Just one. I wasn’t even aware of the second charge until I checked my credit card. The management is horrible. They refuse to refund us. We paid our dues, we haven’t been around, we haven’t scheduled ego they have not lost a dime, worst management I’ve ever seen, and absolutely foul underhanded business practices.

Also, wow-you really used a family member to upgrade your stars?

That’s pathetic.

This is the first and last name of the manager. Look at one of the reviews. 🤦‍♀️

Stay far away from this place. They steal your money, get you tricked into signing up for some plan, tell you you get a discount, and that lessons are $25. Then bam, $180 shows up removed from your account. Despite moving, despite the fact there are no locations where we moved AND despite the fact we went to ONE 30 min swim “lesson” they refuse to refund. Despite Covid, despite all of it.

Not worth it, at all. I would never recommend a business who operates with no ethics.
