The best thing that Mt. Airy has to offer. Health Unlimited! I've been a member since its inception--over 20 years ago. Two of my favorite activities: swimming and strength training. Staff is fabulous. No problem is too big for them to handle. I frequent the facility during the day; staff float around making sure areas are free from issues or problems. The professional cleaning crew does a great job keeping areas neat, clean, bright and tidy. Aside from the facility itself, my personal health has improved greatly. Everyone who cares about their healthspan, needs a place like Health Unlimited. Come join me in getting healthy. You'll be glad that you did :)

We have been members for about three years and have steadily seen a decline in the upkeep of the gym
Lots of employees standing around the desk, chatting with each other and greeting customers

Their is an opportunity for these individuals to move about the gym and encourage the young people to get off of their phones and move through the equipment efficiently.

The gym is consistently empty at the antibacterial stations placed around the gym and the garbage cans that are attached to those stations are overflowing. Ewww!!

Everybody at the gym is super pleasant, but it really would be nice to have the equipment cleaned , staff moving about the floor to encourage efficiency in equipment usage.

2024 update: My whole family now goes to this gym and still loves to be part of this gym! I am getting to know a lot of the amazing staff, and I enjoy the group exercise classes. Making great friends at this facility is unexpected extra! My only complaint might be I wished on Fridays and Saturdays they were open later because my husband and I are more of night gym goers.

2022: My family loves this gym. Something to do for each of my family members! My son is 14 and signed up for the student membership and is able to show up on his own. Which is nice to give his some feeling of independence. I do wish there was a membership where you can pay the family plan by month. My kids are in sports certain times a year where they wouldn't be able to make it to the gym a couple months a year. Overall everything is great. The gym is clean and organized. The staff are super friendly and attentive!!

Absolutely horrible! The gym smells horrible and the locker rooms are so dirty. Also after you swim in the pool you smell like pee and chlorine mixed. This place needs an inspection . The ventilation system is out of date and the pool deck drains are covered in hair. You will probably get sick if you come here.

Update: Nicole is a wonderful personal trainer! I loved her yoga classes, and since she also teaches Pilates, Tone, Sculpt, Circuit and Cycling she was able to design a great, balanced workout for me, taking into consideration several injuries. The rest of the staff is wonderful, too. I also enjoy water aerobics, and Aqua Zumba, and the friendships I’ve made here. Still love Health Unlimited four years later!

We have been members here for fifteen years, and just love Health Unlimited! There is a large variety of exercise equipment, free weights, a great circuit room, court activities, spin, plus an adorable nursery and young kids' room downstairs, and a fun big kids' area upstairs, so parents and kids can all exercise and relax. There are many classes for no extra charge, and I have done zumba, yoga, water aerobics, etc. I especially love the two pools and hot tub. The first thing I was able to do after a recent car accident was gentle water walking, with wonderful soaks in the hot tub, and my PT gave me exercises for the pool. This has been SO helpful! Our family enjoyed swim lessons, reasonably priced with a significant member discount but also available to nonmembers. Even though Hubby has a chain gym membership for when he travels, I was able to use a reciprocity agreement when out of state. We also have a neighborhood gym, but I always go to Health Unlimited, conveniently located near my shopping, church, etc. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the management is a true family. There are lots of other programs I haven't mentioned, classes and personal training, etc. We LOVE Health Unlimited!

Got a $199 summer membership since I'm only here for a few months. The staff is very nice and polite. For swimming you need to reserve 30 minute slots for lanes which is pretty easy online. As for the gym, I'm a bit of a beginner so at least for me it's equipped well enough for my needs. I haven't had the chance to attend any classes so I can't speak for those at the moment nor do I have children to speak about those aspects. The atmosphere has felt pretty relaxed so far, and I haven't had any problems or issues yet. Will update at the end of the summer.

This one star review is specifically for Sheila, the swim clinic coach, who was extremely rude and off-putting to myself and my children when we arrived for a class. For reference, my children took this same class in the past, albeit with a younger, friendlier instructor and loved it. Additionally, I was advised by the front desk staff that this class was a good fit for us. However, with Sheila at the helm, we were not only unwelcomed upon our arrival but very obviously judged for not fitting her expectations. Her elitist attitude towards customers who have paid approximately $600 just to swim in their overcrowded pool for a few hours under her "instruction" is completely unacceptable. Ive been in sports my entire life and can confidently say that woman should not be in a position of authority over young people. If youre looking for a positive role model for your children and someone who understands the importance of encouraging people of all ages to be active, you wont find it with her. We won't be returning.

Inquired about paying the $13 instead of $16 for a day pass. The guy with tattoos replied "find friends". I don't even use any of the extra ammenities (pool, basketball court) 'big health unlimited' wants their $3. And tattoos just lost them a customer.

This is a wonderful community and place. It feels like a family between how communication is handled and the respect you're given while in attendance. The child center is well cared for and my kids really enjoy attending. The weight floor is open and extensive. The machines are clean and in abundance. . The cardio equipment is updated constantly and always in great shape. While I have not done the classes I do know they have a ton of options. I would use the spin room on my own when it was not being used. Our kids took swim lessons from the staff and now are very strong swimmers. We even held a birthday party at the club.

I basically live at HU. The issue recently has been that it is so crowded I am uncomfortable. I usually have to wait to get on equipment or use machines. I've been trying to change up times to avoid crowds, but it's basically always crowded. I just wish it was bigger or had fewer members.

I have been a member for years. Sadly they are the only game in town when it comes to indoor pools. I use the pool almost exclusively. They serve swim teams and swim lessons, even birthday parties anything but an individual who swims. It is near impossible to get a lane for lap swimming, unless you come between 12-3 pm. At busy times they leave one lap lane open for lap swimmers, it is only 3 feet deep. I have a young child, the only time we as a family could swim in the pool is after 7:30 pm, once swim lessons are over, and then you have to listen to swim team coaches yelling they whole time. I used to love the pool staff, I've noticed a big decline in attentiveness, the guards spend more time flirting with one another than paying attention to swimmers. I strongly encourage anyone who is considering becoming a member to come at the time they plan on exercising and see how busy the facility is, to see if they can even do their desired activity.

Small. Really overcrowded. Expensive. If you want a gym with an open court - forget it. This place hosts volleyball and basketball league games most days and only has a half a court to begin with. Unfortunate Mount Airy does not have a gym that can provide equipment for all the growth and expansion this area has seen in the past 10-20 years. They close early too 10pm on weekdays, 7pm on Saturday, and 5pm on Sunday. Not worth the $99 initial fee then $55 monthly fee. Joke. Joke. Joke!
