I will start by saying that no gym is going to have 100% of what you want. I have seen the gradual decline of some of the equipment and locker room amenities over the years. The fact that the paper towel dispensers are broken most of the time and the sauna is lackluster for the price you pay is simply asinine. I have also seen many improvements at this gym too since I become a member years ago.

However, what is lacking in the items I’ve stated above, the staff, hours, and usability of equipment makes up for. This is one of the only gyms, and probably the best gym that has 24/7 access Monday - Friday. Am I going to workout at 1:30am on a daily basis? No. But do I like the idea that if I need to do so, I can? Absolutely. Sometimes you may not want to deal with the crowds after work. Especially as we come up on the New Year’s Resolution influx that happens every year. The personal training staff is also really good. I’ve been with my trainer Toan and he has helped me achieve strength and running goals (multiple marathons and half marathon PRs). He actually works with me to create goals based on what I want to achieve, and not cookie cutter workouts that I’ve seen implanted at other gyms. When other things have made me consider other gyms, the fact that I would no longer be able to have him as my trainer has kept me as a member.

I understand all of the frustration and other reviews about this gym, and I’ve been with this gym since before the rooftop pool was built. It’s 100% an attraction which results in a higher amount of members during the summer months. But when it comes down to having equipment you need and the ability to get a great lift in, this place has it. And they’re way more transparent about rules than what many are led to believe based on the comments. Some people don’t have basic reading comprehension skills or get offended when they are told they can’t do something that is either A) outlined in the rules or B) not included in their level of membership. What it comes down to is the level of entitlement of some members that think they deserve to be given special treatment, especially in regard to pool access and guests on weekends. At the end of the day, it’s a gym - start lifting and stop complaining.

Been coming here for the past ten years and in the last two the whole place has fallen apart. I clean up more than the staff does on any given day, there is a ton of machines that are broken or breaking, including some that didnt even work on the first day they arrived. And when they add new "fancy" equipment (must be sponsored by life fitness because thats all we get and it sucks), they either put it in the most inconvenient spot or its something memebers dont need, i.e. a new trx monkey bar set up when no one uses the one downstairs and we get two new benches that every member ive spoken to says they suck and are two skinny. Stop catering for people who dont even come to this gym.

The sauna hasn’t been cleaned in years. There is mold growing under the wood floor that has been sitting there for years. Very smelly as soon as you walk in, as some of the patrons like to put a towel at the bottom of the door to block ventilation. Sad to see a nice gym not being properly cleaned.

Drove 25 minsto sign up for a membership half way through that “tour” I was over it . I was expecting way more the price point is okay but the roof top is clearly the star of the show . Unfortunately they close it down for the winter. No activities at all ???? No one is asking to swim but what a waste of such a beautiful space . They could do karaoke or have a violinist have it open just to lounge???? The manager was kinda nice nasty and kept looking at her watch I guess I was messing up her plans for the night . She had her ravens jersey on so I guess it’s okay to be unprofessional for sports . Funny I went to crunch fitness next door the the guy was so friendly and outgoing . They need to switch I may still sign up because I have free time and need motivation. BUT PLEASE HAVE A FALL/ winter events To close it is just lazy !!!

I have been a Merritt member going on two years now and the treatment I received at the canton location is unacceptable. I am a frequent user of the Towson and the White Marsh locations. I have came to Canton numerous times and worked out with no issues. I walked in the gym checked in and asked the lady at the front desk for a water , she told me to go to the case and grab the water. I asked her to charge the water to my account. As she was charging the water to my account I guess she noticed I was a gold member and was explaining to me that the canton location is only for platinum members, In agreement I also expressed to her that I’ve been to the Canton location numerous times and a lady walked up and interrupted the conversation I’m guessing she was a manager because she was not in uniform and said “well I guess they just let you in”. Although I understood completely what the front desk lady was telling me I said “ok that’s fine I’ll just put my water back and leave” as I’m putting the water back the other lady rudely said “Ebony you can not workout here” in my defense the lady at the front desk said “she’s just putting her water back”. I have never been treated this way in an establishment where I pay my hard earned money and although I am not a platinum member I should have not been treated that way, I felt completely unwelcomed and this is unacceptable and does not uphold the Merritt Clubs reputation.

THIS IS IN REPOSNSE TO THE OWNER WHO ANSWERED THE COMMENT ABOVE. OBVIOUSLY YOU DID NOT READ TO COMPREHEND! MY ISSUE WAS NOT THAT I WAS DENIED ACCESS TO THE CLUB. AS I STATED BEFORE I UNDERSTOOD WHY I WAS BEING DENIED. MY PROBLEM IS WITH HOW I WAS TREATED WHILE BEING DENIED. LIKE I SAID I WAS PUTTING THE WATER BACK AND THE LADY ACTED AS IF I WAS JUST BARGING INTO THE GYM TOTALLY IGNORING WHAT WAS SAID. THATS MY ISSUE! WHEN I STATED I WAS JUST PUTTING THE WATER BACK AND LEAVING AND THE FRONT DESK RECEPTIONIST WAS AWARE OF THAT. IF YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT YOUR PLATINUM CUSTOMERS I SHOULD HAVE BEEN DENIED THE FIRST TWO TIMES I CAME TO THE GYM. SO YES IT IS UNFAIR TO HAVE PLATINUM MEMEBERS WHO PAY A HIGHER MEMEBERSHIP TO ALLOW OTHERS TO ENTER THE GYM, BUT IT IS ALSO UNFAIR TO PICK AND CHOOSE WHEN TO DENY CUSTOMERS ENTRY TO THE GYM AND IT IS UNFAIR TO HAVE RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES. THIS MAKES ME WANT TO BE DONE WITH MERRITT AS A WHOLE!!!!

i am a usual merrit goer, today I went to the canton location just because they have a turf field. I was on a time crunch (about an hour to workout) and decided to order some food before my workout. I ordered a parfait from the rooftop pool bar and it took literally half an hour. No explanation as to why it took so long but it was completely unreasonable for yogurt, fruit, and granola to take THAT long. It would be understandable if the area was busy, but it was not. Especially over a parfait. I am extremely disappointed.

As two Black gay men simply seeking a guest pass or trial membership, we were met with an appalling lack of professionalism and basic human decency at the Canton Merritt Club. The manager was dismissive, reluctant, and made it abundantly clear—without saying it outright—that we were not welcome.

It became obvious that our presence was being treated as a problem, not a potential membership. The contrast in tone and body language when interacting with white patrons before and after us made the situation even more glaring. We weren’t asking for special treatment—we were asking for the same access that Merritt claims to offer anyone interested in their facility.

This experience was humiliating, disheartening, and disturbingly reflective of how systemic racism and homophobia still manifest in places that proudly advertise “inclusive” values. Merritt Clubs should be ashamed to allow this kind of gatekeeping behavior, especially in a diverse city like Baltimore.

We’ll be taking our business to a fitness center that respects all people, regardless of race or orientation. And we strongly encourage others—especially those in marginalized communities—to think twice before supporting a place that treats inclusivity as a marketing tactic instead of a standard of practice.

My experience as a guest at this location was unfortunately not good due to the rude staff. I have multiple friends who go here as members and have considered joining even though I live far from there and never had this issue before. Yesterday made me decide I will not be. I visited the pool here with another friend and towards the end of the day, the deck manager came over with a security guy to let us know they found an empty alcoholic beverage can that they do not sell at the bar near our pool chairs. While I’ll admit I forgot to remove that from my bag before entering the gym as it was underneath my towel, I didn’t appreciate the way she treated us or handled the situation. Her approach was very aggressive and instead of giving a warning (if anything) although that was not our intention to bring outside drinks in, she kicked us out completely. I chose not to argue or say anything to her, but she also rushed the bartenders to close our tab so that we could leave faster. She even asked for our names and made us write them down which I am not sure why that was important. Overall, we felt we were being targeted as we noticed other individuals that may have had outside drinks in as well earlier that day. Please have your staff give proper customer service when it comes to situations like these and if you need to remove people from an area, do it as nicely as you can. Neither of us were rude or disrespectful back to her as we did not say much. To avoid any other situations from happening with your members and guests, start checking bags before letting people walk into the pool to avoid misunderstandings!

Save your money! Spend your money with the people who appreciate it and let you feel heard. My sister got into a verbal disagreement with a camp counselor over the camp counselor telling my nephew not to jump into the pool because she was getting splashed. One thing led to another, and it got heated. Rightfully so. In what world is it acceptable for any adult to address a child when they are COMPLETELY WRONG! To tell children not to jump in the pool because you are getting wet is absolutely insane. So then the regional manager Andrew called her today to “get her side of the story” in which his professionalism was subpar. He began yelling at her, over talking her and being disrespectful. She asked to have someone else call her to discuss the events that took place and he tells her “no he won’t have anyone else call her” so she hangs up because she felt afraid and overwhelmed. He then continues to call her back to back to back THREE more times. Although she stated she didn’t want to talk to him because of his lack of professionalism! The issue at hand here is I’m assuming this is a race thing. Nothing was ever addressed to this camp counselor when she was supposed to be INSIDE of the pool with the children. This place is racist…. And once again the “colored” person is the aggressor because she stood up for her 6 year old child who should have NEVER been addressed by an adult who was not an employee of the club. Andrew is a poor, lousy, disgusting excuse of a manager and a MAN! To over talk a woman because your ego is too large so disgusting! I assume that’s why his wife is divorcing him LOL makes sense! Disgusting! If you are black…. Take your money elsewhere! These people don’t respect your time, your voice or your opinion. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!!!!!

Great club. Been going for a couple of years. Pool is good too.

4 stars because whoever controls the playlist at the pool all summer long has THE WORST TASTE in music. Bring headphones to the pool. The one time I heard a good song come on (a Beyoncé song from Renaissance) they changed it as quickly as possible back to shitty music again.

Also, pretty disappointed in the LOE they put into “decorating”. For their roof top luau they threw light up balls in the pool and called it good. For their roof top Fourth of July they put colored paper circles a couple places around the gym (they’ve also been left up for some reason even though it’s more than two weeks past).

Staff is all amazing though!

Ongoing disappointments are the theme here.
I emailed Dave about any possible adjustments to my platinum membership as I have no access to platinum Gyms in my area since my primary location was damaged by the storm. Their response was to freeze my account and roll over my payment to the next month. Now they are allegedly going to make pay adjustments. I hope this reflects the "patience" they have been so grateful about. My one star review reflects the sour taste in my mouth from this experience as well as the response "ownership" gave me in regards to my review regarding my partners injury not being acknowledged. To honor their attempt to invalidate my review by claiming there are "no records" (despite the fact that I attached a read receipt) I have attached read receipts to this review showing the time stamps and amount of times my emails have been opened.

My partner had a 45 pound weight fall on their foot from chest height. They told staff what happened and they were directed to the front desk for some ice. No one offered any form of assistance, and the event was not documented. To make matters even better, David Hannibal read and ignored the email I sent.

Gross negligence and lack of human empathy. I still can't comprehend how there are no steps of procedure to handle a injury on premise. However, what is there to expect from a General Manager that ignores emails.

Interesting response from the owner. Please note the read receipt. Fortunately after this review Dave got back to me. Unfortunately I never got to witness their new "safety" implementations because of the tornado incident.

I’ve been a member for 3 plus years. For the Canton location, they require you to pay extra money to be a member to use facility. I always understood it was to pay for the rooftop pool.
The facility is ok and generally clean . Fitness center is very crowded after 3:00 on weekdays till about 7:00p.m. The rooftop pool is ok on weekdays. On weekends it’s a bit crazy and there has been security hired to maintain things. I stopped bringing my child there on weekends as I found it’s too much. In May they had some tornado damage. Half of the club is closed indefinitely, but the GM will look you in the eyes and tell you everything is fine and full payment of monthly dues is expected. Apparently he isn’t there on normal hours to see how crowded it gets when the whole place is open. I’ve been going to downtown location recently and people are nicer there and management is better.

Merritt Gym in Canton is an awesome place to work out! The facility is clean, spacious, and has everything you need—from top-notch equipment to a wide range of classes. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere is super motivating. The only thing I’d love to see is the return of 24-hour access on the weekend, that flexibility made a big difference. Other than that, it’s easily one of the best gyms in Baltimore!

Don’t let the size of this gym or price scare you off! Intimidating but so worth joining. The locker rooms have ample showers, lockers, mirrors, sinks, outlets. There’s a sauna as well. Plenty of towels are always available for the showers, pool, and standard use throughout the gym. 2 pool areas: 1 for laps and winter use, the other is rooftop and open during summer for lounging. The classes they have available are awesome and plenty. The amount of equipment they have available is wild. They also have special events on occasion. It’s kept clean and there are sanitation containers everywhere. Not all gym goers seem to care about germs tho so I’d definitely wipe anything down both before and after use, I’ve seen plenty of people not wash their hands in the bathroom area, do other gross things without washing/sanitizing, and not wipe equipment down after using it 🤮, people are gross. Also be warned, even though there are signs to not record in the locker room, sometimes I see people doing it anyway (eek).

All in all, I’ve never been so happy with a gym!

I just finished a 3 Day Trial of your Facility and wanted to Rate my favorite GYM in all of Baltimore City and Baltimore County. The size of the Facility is impressive and is complimented by the Canton Area for nearby Shopping and Dining. I can appreciate the rock that must be for many Locals living in The Canton Area. The view in every direction is breathtaking and the proximity to areas like Federal Hill and others makes for Me a nice Walk to and from your Gym as a Warm-Up and a Cool- down more enjoyable.

I look forward to joining as soon as I return to Baltimore!

This is a great place for families, neighbors, friends to meet up, and workout. They have "Parent's Night Out" twice a month on Fridays so kids can be dropped off and fed while parents can go out and have a date night or take a nap lol It's awesome! The indoor pool is fantastic and always clean. New equipment available so nothing is worn out. Staff is helpful, friendly and are comfortable to approach. It is clean- I mean SUPER CLEAN! Ms. Annette is always busy and greets members even when she's vacuuming! She's amazing! Front staff trustworthy- you can leave your phone with them at the charging station without fear. They are always accommodating. One could truly appreciate the efforts made to make members feel welcomed. Even on a bad day- that seems to go away once you step in and are greeted by your first name before you scan in. They know you there. So much to offer, tons of classes, and having access to the other Merritt Clubs is great especially during the summer for pool season.
They do not allow outside food/beverages to the rooftop pool (since there is a restaurant/bar there anyways. Friendly and respectful pool goers welcomed. Disruptive and inappropriate pool goers should go dip in the Bay and stay away! It's meant to be a family friendly environment. It gets ruined when drunk, nearly naked, yelling, nasty, overly sexual, shameful, disgusting "people" arrive looking for attention. *I'd avoid the hot tub on the roof....members be doing drugs and acting like animals from the Discovery channel in there.... in public...around children!!! The club has security now and all bags are checked. There was a couple who tried to bring in a cooler of alcohol... lol that stayed at check-in until they left to go home.
I'm glad the club has decided to take safety and security more seriously. Yay for more family friendly! Boo for trashy nasties lol 😂

My membership fee is over $130 but members who sign ip just to use the pool in the summer are offered a low price with a month to month option. When I questioned why loyal members were not rewarded and instead punished with increasing fees, I was told that if I wanted the lower price I needed to commit to a 12-month membership. Their business practice punishes loyal members and rewards

Two month update: so far so good. Awesome facility with awesome staff. Will helped sign us up and gave us a great tour when we stopped in after moving to the area. Well worth the price of admission.

This location tolerates racial assaults against people of color.
I was verbally assaulted by a white male member and the manager
Dave said nothing could be done. I’m extremely disappointed and horrified that could happen to more woman of color.
SHAMEFUL.

Allowing children to climb on a bar, sit near a bar is very inappropriate. If you want to be at a day club with children, here’s your chance. This place definitely needs to set standards in place regarding boundaries between the adults at the bar and the children. No one wants a crying baby and a drink.

Fantastic gym for the whole family, been going here for a year and it's been great. It's cheaper for my family of 4 to go here year round with the roof top pool instead of buying
a seasonal pool membership.

I filled out a recent survey and one of your employees sent me a rebuttal in regards to what I said on the survey. That action alone, frustrates a fair terms contract. For community relations, your gym doesn't provide discounts to veterans, disabled, or any civil or public servants who are Baltimore blue collar; just cops. Then there is the "young professional rate", when my wife and I signed up, we never heard of any various rates for contract discounting from the employee who set up our contract. So Merritt gyms provide selling point discounts to young professionals but not disabled veterans, great selling point Here is a google review about your offers you provide young people, just not old people, or people who are considered too old for a discounted or specially rated for being young. A young urban professional is the old cliche of 'yuppie', your gym has a yuppie rate but not any social contract rates, or grass roots rates for anyone in Baltimore but yuppies or cops? 20% of Baltimore is made up of students, you marginalized 20% of a market practice which includes a gargantuan university student population, but you would give a young professional discount a club discount before a medical student in residency? Here is that customer's review and go ahead and relish in your discriminatory practices for discounting members:

I really like Merritt especially their classes and instructors but I feel like the gym is getting more and more crowded. Even with the new parking garage it’s difficult to find parking some evenings. I’m ending membership not because of the crowding but because of their price increases. When I initially joined I was able to get the “young professional” rate and I was promised that each year after my monthly rate would only go up my $5 a year until it reached the current rate. However, I recently got a letter stating my rate would go up to the current rate effective may 1st. I called to ask about this and to remind them what I was promised only to be told this is legally what gyms are allowed to do with rate increases. Awesome. With such an overcrowded gym you would think they could fund the facilities without hiking up everyone’s rates and breaking their promises.

To the owner: Are you too cryptic to contact me as your member rather than telling me you are sorry and incorrect. Cut and pasted is another members story, that you probably are sorry about too. I do have the correct information and you don't need to say you're sorry about a google review, feel free to publish your email you sent me asking me to visit the gym to talk about the google review, because your email suggests your policy is messed up. If you are the owner nice try ... .
Response from the owner 2 days ago
We are sorry but you do not have correct information. We also offer Senior Discounts, Active Military discounts and First Responder discounts. Young Professional is not the only discount we provide.

Great gym and everything that comes with it. Only complaint is that for the price we pay a month ,the guest pass is only free 1 time per guest and also the guest fee for the pool being $50 for the day bc if you have to buy a guest pass as well you’re paying $25 guest fee AND the $50 pool pass($75) total. A little absurd considering the price we pay a month for it not to be included with the membership

Really clean, spacious facility, and the lap pool (where I always get my own lane coming at slightly off times) and relaxing summer rooftop pool are such huge pluses for overall well-being. The front desk staff are welcoming and kind and other members are very respectful. Slight hiccup with not realizing I didn't qualify for a discount I thought I qualified for so be sure to check the contract when you sign up, but that's certainly not enough to dock a star. Versatile gym with great energy.

Great gym with great equipment, but it's hard to give this gym any higher than a 3 star when they close at 8PM on the weekends. For the price of this gym, it's extremely inconvenient to not be able to go to the gym after work.

I actually love this gym; specifically the Canton location. Great equipment, nice spacing, and most of the staff members are friendly. One shortcoming of the gym is that the saunas are very small for the size of the gyms. Hard to find a space during peak hours. Also, if you're looking to relax in the sauna, you can forget it as someone will undoubtedly come in playing loud music on their phone. I've complained a few times about it, but nothing has been done to address the matter. But aside from that, Merritt Canton or Fort locations are the best gyms in the city.

I agree with the other reviews that the management here DOES NOT RESPECT THEIR OWN CONTRACT TERMS. We were told when adding a member to an existing membership that was not under a contract, that ONLY ONE OF US would be locked into the 12 month contract. When we needed to cancel due to a move out of state, we are told that BOTH OF US are under contract and have to pay the $250/person cancellation fee. They lied to me when signing the contract FOR ONE PERSON and were inflexible despite the courtesy I gave them and clear reasoning.

The management here act like COMMON GRIFTERS and prospective customers would be wise to look elsewhere for their gym. This isn't the first time I have had a bad experience with contracts at this gym conglomerate. I feel bad for the frontline employees who have to enforce these loose contracts (and contracts that a customer never signed).

There are better gyms out there that aren't out to extract every penny from you. Find a better gym and you won't owe a full month's rent on your way out the door.

Extremely disappointed by the pool management at this facility. Lifeguards are consistently doing Homework and listening to music on their EarPods while on duty. The pool also has no policy indicating that lanes should be shared so you can expect to wait to swim if , like today, someone “doesn’t feel like sharing a lane”. the aquatic staff (lifeguards and the aquatic manager) are dismissive and invalidating to these concerns. I’ve been to gyms where the cost is half as expensive and have gotten 10x better customer service.

Canceling a gym membership with Merritt Canton is a more intense experience than requesting a tourist visa to North Korea. Do yourself a favor and avoid joining this prison so you never have to attempt the Shawshank Redemption of fitness I just went through.

Editing due to owners response: it’s not your contract that is miserable, it’s the way your employees handle a cancellation request. I was physically at the location 3 separate occasions to request a cancel, called and was transferred multiples times and told I had to come in AGAIN, then finally told I could email a manager. I was told managers would call when they never did, I was told conflicting information by every employee I spoke to - no one knew what they were doing and everyone had an attitude about it along the way. Hence why the EXPERIENCE cancelling was so terrible.

Great wide open space you never have to be in anyone else's personal space. They have 3 count them 3 Jacob's Ladder...my favorite machine to get the heart rate up and help me to sweat. I loved their TRX station. I may think about joining, but the price is astronomical and keeps rising according to my friend who is a member. I came to try it out.

Round of applause for the Merritt pool staff: the employees that check-in the guests, bartenders (guy with the sick beard!!), servers (Jules!!), and lifeguards. Everyone does their best to make sure you have a great experience (they are so friendly!!)

There is a good balance of families and young professionals, so it doesn’t get too rowdy (although in the past two weeks I’ve seen two people taken away on a stretcher from overconsumption of alcohol - the staff does great in these emergencies)

The facilities are always clean and there are plenty of towels available. The only thing that would make this place perfect is a better menu. Sometimes the food arrives missing important ingredients or over cooked, so I don’t purchase food there anymore.
