Generally, i really like Merritt. Two issues. 1) Membership is quite expensive, and i believe it increased over covid. However, as far as i know, none of the locations have returned to precovid hours. I feel like i’m paying more and more for less access to the gym. As busy as the place is, even being open a few hours later would be nice. 2) the pool hours are all over the place. Few lifeguards, at least at the fed hill location, stick to the hours posted online. Q is the exception, and she does a lovely job. However, many of the other lifeguards close the pool down 1-2 hours early on their whim. This can be particularly irritating if you are swimming for exercise, as the lanes are often busy. Hopping in to get your laps in only to be told the pool is closing an hour early is pretty inconvenient. Some close the pool but let you hang out on the pool deck. Others force you off the pool deck. I just want posted hours and consistency.

The gym is cool, but more often than not the AC is off. It’s pretty odd, on more than a few occasions I’ve had to go to the front desk and request they turn on the AC and fans. Being cheap while running a gym should honestly be studied, lol

Joining this gym has greatly improved my commitment to fitness and mental health. It’s clean, people are respectful of your space, and there is more than enough equipment to get a solid workout in.
Wolff is an excellent personal trainer. His coaching has helped me level up my strength training routine. I appreciate his knowledge, positive attitude, and consistent communication. I highly recommend him as a personal trainer.
Cliff, the front desk staff, and management really care about their members. Everyone is cool/normal and eager to build community. For example, they pass out free popsicles on hot days at the pool.
Speaking of the pool, Q is an awesome life guard, and the entire bar & cook staff is friendly. I talk to other members on pool days and have made some new friends.
The fact that I joined three months ago and know so many staff members & regulars by name speaks to the awesome culture of this location.
It’s nice belonging to an excellent gym in terms of personal training, equipment, cleanliness, classes, etc. where people are also kind.
I am so happy with my membership. Thank you for reminding me that decent customer service really does still exist.

I joined a few months ago and have been happy with all aspects of the facility. Equipment is modern, plentiful, and clean. Staff are pleasant and friendly. Personal training was helpful in getting a baseline fitness level, introduction to the equipment, and a strength training plan.

I’ve been really disappointed with my Merritt membership and wish I did not join. I joined due to the hot yoga studio but it is very difficult to access the yoga classes as they usually fill within the first 30-60 seconds of opening. There is not enough classes to meet the high demand, this is a constant problem the 6 months I belonged to the gym. The yoga studio is small and gets overcrowded . The gym is often overcrowded too and people are rude in terms of giving each other personal space and sharing equipment usage .

Love the gym, friendly front desk and staff overall. The trainers are all super helpful when it comes to questions about equipment. Rene at the front desk is always friendly conversation. Canton is my preferred location but this one does just fine when you're in the area!

If they weren’t walking distance I’d go elsewhere. It’s just too crowded. All the time. Even if I try at weird hours I’m still waiting in line for the machine I need to get to. The classes/instructors are awesome, specifically the cycling (love the bikes!). They recently got really into choreo on the bikes though? I guess that’s in right now, but for those of us who feel like doing our crunches and push ups not on a bike there are a couple instructors that don’t build the whole class around it. And they keep earplugs in the spin studio, use them or bring your own. It gets loud in there.

This gym (Merritt- E. Fort Ave.) is absolutely amazing!!!! The staff, the managers and the trainers are phenomenal! They are caring, patient, enthusiastic, and professional. The manager, Bruce is receptive, energetic, and listens to his customers opinions and inputs and has always followed through with requests. I love the fact that everyone is accepted without judgement. This is simply not an easy find in the workout world today. In addition the manager has outings and involves the clients- a first for me to have a perk at a gym being included on outings with staff and clients. That in itself is phenomenal! I’ve been a member at severalllll gyms and have never felt more welcomed than I do at this gym. The personal trainer, Kewena, I believe they call her KK is out of this world. She has worked magic with me🥰I call her Magic Trainer. For instance, besides getting healthy, I also had this horrible hip and knee pain from doing sports when I was young so much that I couldn’t sleep and thought I was going to need medical attention. It’s been off and on. I finally mentioned it to KK and she said let’s try something different. Well, after my last session (stretch as she put it - another word for mild workout 😍)the pain has totallyyyyyyyyy subsided. It’s like what in the world. I’m now able to lie and sit comfortably without that intense dull pain. It’s truly amazing!!!!! I also want to include how kind and friendly Kim and Wolf are as well. Fort Avve. Merritt Rocks!!!! I would give 10 stars ⭐️ if I could.

While I usually love this gym, I’m slightly annoyed by my recent experience. I check in (w/ husband and baby) with two staff members at the front desk and go to the pool …moments later we are asked to leave because the pool is 18+. This is fine except when I read the location’s pool rules before even heading over, it never stated an age limit for the pool. I would recommend that this information be proudly displayed on your pool rules for each location online. Further, I would appreciate it if staff could address their concern prior to a person actually going to the pool in a similar situation.

Where to start. Fantastic facility! Staff member Caleb was friendly and very accommodating. All of the cardio equipment is new and Precor in my opinion has the best machines. Towel service is everywhere and the locker rooms are very clean and there is a sauna in them. Pool is a great place to hang out and they have music playing and a great vibe. Classes are huge here and get great participation. I can’t recommend this club and their staff enough.

Honest opinion. It’s not worth the amount unless you go to canton. This gym is insanely small with limited space. Equipment is standard as all. Merrit says they price high because not only do you get the gym, you get “family too”. What family makes you pay 100+ for a membership 😂Only good thing is the pool. Overpriced in my opinion. It’s a business but they wonder why they lose customers daily. The turnover rate is insane, but that’s expected.

I went to Merrit in Fed. Hill this week for the first time to check out the gym, and immediately felt so welcomed by Niyah and Tim. They were so kind and helpful in the process, and really made me feel like I belonged. The worst establishment I’ve ever worked with. I was a member of Merritt for a year. I am now moving out of state and when I went to cancel my membership, I filled out the form the front desk worker told me to fill out and thought that everything was fine since I had cancelled a month ahead of my one year mark. I never received an email confirming my cancellation so I called and was all of a sudden told I owed for a 13th month. I asked to speak to someone in membership and she tried simply said that those were the terms of my contract. I had the contract in front of me and nothing in it said I owed 13 payments. She couldn’t explain to me why the person who helped me cancel my membership said nothing about it. I asked to speak with a manager to try to resolve the issue and she said he was not in but would call me by COB. Two months later and multiple stops into the gym I never was able to get ahold of the manager. This morning I received a collections notice for a past due bill from Merritt. I immediately called their collections department to try to explain the situation. Alicia, their collections manager, refused to let me speak and threatened to hang up on me every time I spoke up. After being yelled at for 10 minutes I finally agreed to just pay the last bill and cut ties. When I asked if I could send a check (I did not want Merritt having my credit card information after this fiasco) she again said she was going to hang up on me. She could not give me a plausible explanation as to why I could not mail a check. I finally paid the bill and when I asked if she could provide me with any managers information to discuss what had happened she told me “it’s summer, we have hundreds of new customers and are much too busy to speak about this” and hung up the phone. If I could give Merritt a zero, I would. The lack of human decency is appalling.

I came expecting to have a good workout, chill by the pool & listen to music but this turned into one of the worst gym trial experiences I’d ever had. Knowing that the pool isn’t usually available to guests on weekends, I called beforehand to see if it would be ok since my friend was DJing here. I had received validation that it would be perfectly fine and still I was harassed by one of the front desk staff (really tall white guy, don’t remember his name) as I was leaving the gym. Even after he had previously confirmed that it was completely OK for me to enter the pool area, when I was leaving, he approached me very violently claiming that I tried to sneak into the pool area without permission. When I initially entered the gym, I informed him that I had called beforehand and he said he would confirm with a supervisor. He came back saying that it was fine and asked me to fill out a form on my phone & that I was good to go. Assuming that everything was all set, I went to workout & then lay by the pool. Then as I was leaving he abruptly stopped me and began accosting me claiming that pool access was for “members only”. I would have been perfectly fine just lifting & leaving if not that he had previously said I could go to the pool area since my friend was DJing. I’m just really shocked and very disappointed by the customer service & lack of accountability by this particular employee (again the tall white guy at the front desk). I was in fact looking to begin a gym membership with merrit clubs at this location but now that is definitely not happening. I will be going to the Canton location where I hopefully don’t ever have to see this guy again.

Overpriced, expect a long wait to use equipment during most normal hours (they’d do tours for potential new members and with a straight face tell them that the wait times they were witnessing weren’t typical), broken equipment takes considerable time to be replaced or fixed, and their back office is stereotypically difficult to communicate with as soon as they catch a whiff that you’re looking to leave. During peak COVID, they also tried their best to skirt around the various capacity regulations and keep their doors open with the excuse they take their cleaning very seriously. It took Instagram and social media attention to get them to even issue temporary membership freezes when everything was ordered completely closed. The extra few dried up paper towel disinfectant stations they threw in is I guess what they refer to when they claim they took the threat seriously over the past few months.

I was a member for several years. The location I went to was on Fort Ave, federal hill. While the location was mostly clean and had adequate equipment, service from mgmt was sub par. Upon moving, I canceled on 1/21, but was still being billed on 3/21. After 4 emails, and a lack of responses, I had to submit a fraud claim and contact the BBB. I would not advise using this gym as they are in responsive of anything is needed or you move away....ie they will bill you despite requests to cancel until you take legal action

I just joined this gym & i pay 109$ per month NOT worth it! Lizzy the manager is rude and the employees get away with harrassing members like myself , they take "notes" under your account basically giving them ability to lie or make up an incident to get you terminated... (The pool serves alcoholic beverages) the staff said i had to leave because i was in the sauna drunk !!! I never entered the sauna i only went swimming there twice , yet the staff noted in my account that 3 different staff members "noted" i was in the sauna & used profanity because they had NO motive to put me out .. Escorted me out like i was a criminal than lied to cover up for theyre actions.. Than Lizzy the General Manager "sides" with her employees , basically theyre word against mines and as the customer i have "no" say so in the "matter" because Lizzy said "why would her employees lie" , i dont recommend this gym to anyone the staff pick & choose whom to be courteous too " Bias"...

Five stars, if you come during non-peak hours. During peak times the place is packed and you can’t use your time efficiently unless you just want to do endless cardio. Non-peak hours are great and this location has plenty of gear for a good workout. All of the staff are friendly and helpful.
I come here primarily to lift. I don’t really care about the locker rooms or anything like that. If I want a nice looking bathroom I’ll stay at home and. The locker rooms are being renovated for those bathroom connoisseurs posting negative reviews on here.
There are two power racks and plenty of benches. There are several cable machines. There’s also an assortment of machines for all the muscle groups to complement the free weights. And a ton of cardio equipment.

Merritt does a great job in providing all necessary equipment, classes and amenities. For the price you certainly get what you pay for. This is my primary gym and I pay $60 a month for it. So far I've really enjoyed my experience here mainly because it has everything I need and is open 24/7 which is a beautiful thing. I work at the hospital and my hours very unstable so being able to go to the gym at any moment of the day makes things very convinient for my very inconvenient schedule. If you go through my pictures I've hit basically every question I had was checking it out. There's also a pool but it's outdoor so it's closed for the season and will reopen in the summer. Contract lasts a year from sign up so if you want to break it before the year you'll pay a hefty fee. Also you have to mail or come in to cancel so take that into account. If you have no intentions of moving out of Maryland within a year it's worth the investment. Hope this helps!

To start, the membership is incredibly overpriced for what you get. There is always at least one piece of broken equipment in the gym, the locker room is subpar at best, and it is one of the most overcrowded gyms I have ever been a member of. Even at off peak times you'll find yourself waiting for pieces of equipment.
Beyond that, only a handful of the staff here is friendly and/or helpful. The manager of the facility was exceptionally rude to me more than once and unwilling to offer any help or assistance--promising to call me and then never reaching out. When I then reached out to him again he claimed to have no recollection of saying that and tried to put the blame on me.
Unfortunately, this gym has a monopoly on the city of Baltimore so unless you want to go to planet fitness or leave the city, this is really the only option, and they know it. Lastly, be wary of signing a contract and read the fine print carefully because they will hit you with a $200 cancellation fee if you try to get out of it.

Signed up, and almost immediately regretted it. No tour of the facility, instructors blew off my appointments for their included FIT program, no one at the front desk can help with class sign up or any other information about the gym, and responses to emails are practically non-existent, and if you do finally get an email back they don't bother to answer your question. This place is a scam. Nothing that was offered as part of sign up has been delivered in 13 months of membership. Heidi and Jamie appear to be completely unable to offer basic customer service or deliver services purchased. Despite calling, emailing, and requesting help in person now over 40 times, there is simply no response or resolution. I've spent more time trying to get answers out of this place, than actually in the gym. Stay far, far away.

If broken equipment in an over crowded gym for $80/month is what you are looking for this is your place. This gym has a near monopoly on the federal hill area and they know it.

Descent place, little rustic feeling, good work out atmosphere, clean, friendly staff, good equipment, and most importantly good looking chics in yoga pants!

I attend Merritt, Fort Ave's Hot Yoga on Saturdays pretty routinely. Recently, I had Kelley as the instructor - awesome class! I've been practicing yoga for years and haven't had a workout as tough as Kelley's. Lots of quick Vinyasa flows and challenging poses. Her attitude was great - positive and energetic and pushed us but without being overbearing. Music selection was on point as well.
Looking forward to taking her class again!

My husband and I have been members of Merritt since 2010 and have enjoyed every second! The gym and facilities way exceed our needs for a gym. We utilize the pools, fitness classes, weights and cardio machines. The staff is always friendly and willing to answer any questions. The unique aspect of Merritt is that you are assured to have a Merritt within your work or home that you can attend on a daily basis. We have been to 7 out of the 10 gyms in order to accommodate our daily and weekend schedules, we LOVE it!!

I use Merritt mainly for the awesome group fitness classes that they offer. I go to a spin/RPM (indoor cycling) or Body Pump (group weight training) class every morning. If you're looking for instructors who are knowledgeable, motivating, positive and will push you to your limit in every single class, Merritt is the place to go. I remember being deathly afraid and very self conscious my first couple classes but the atmosphere was welcoming and inspiring and I've been hooked ever since! I've come so far on my fitness/weight lost journey largely because of the group fitness classes. Try a class and I promise you'll leave sweaty and sore but wanting more the next day.

I'm a member and frequent Fort Ave & Canton. I love the group fitness classes, especially spin and body pump. The instructors are great, professional, high energy and I never leave without a good workout. Working at JHH, I get a bit of a discount which makes it more affordable, but truly I don't think the dues over overpriced for what you get. The gym is clean, well staffed, helpful and is always running smoothly. If you're looking to join, highly recommend! Also, the pool is totally a perk. It gets busy on weekends, but weekdays is perfect.

I have been a member of Merritt Athletic Club on Fort Ave since January 2010. The majority of my time at the gym is spent in classes, whether it's body pump or spin. The instructors are knowledgeable, personable, friendly, helpful, and make going to class fun. Over the past 4 years that I have been a member, the gym as a whole has improved greatly (equipment and instructors as well). There are more free weights and machines to use, and the spin bikes were just recently replaced (and I love them!). I hope to be able to attend different classes in the future but try to make it to Chip K. and Kim K.'s spin classes every chance I can get. The pool is an added bonus in the summertime. I like the atmosphere of the gym, it's clean and has everything I would hope it would offer.

The Fort Ave location is very convenient. It is close to my house so I go there around 4 times a week. They have a ton of treadmills so I never have to wait which is a huge plus! My favorite classes offered at this location are Body Pump and Spin. Both have awesome and welcoming instructors that are very attentive to their classes. The only draw back about this location is they do not offer as many classes as other locations. Please add Barre or more toning classes!

Merritt at Fort Ave is the best! Of course, all Merritt's are awesome, but the staff here is always super friendly and helpful, and the group instructors are amazing... Not to mention the pool/bar!

I joined Merritt mostly for the group fitness classes and was not disappointed. Monday through Friday I am there for the 6am classes. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays are when I go to spin classes. Kelly McCullough is on Tuesdays for cycle and then Chip and Kim Kafka teach RPM Mondays and Thursdays, respectively. They are all amazing and will legit kick your ass (if that's what you're looking for in a spin class). Other instructors are less intense, so there is something for everyone.
Wednesdays and Fridays are body pump days for me. Again, the instructors are fabulous. David on Wednesdays and Kim K. on Fridays. They switch up the classes every time so you are never doing the same exact thing. I have been doing the classes for months and still get sore!
I am looking forward to trying some other classes soon, as Merritt has so many others! Body attack is supposed to be a killer total body workout and the same for boot camp. I have done the Body Flow class, which was a great way to stretch out after my marathon.
Aside from the group fitness classes, I have really never had a problem with the other equipment. I do usually go around 530-7am, so it is less busy then, but even after work it has not been terrible. The other reviews mentioned how crowded it can be after New Year's, but that is true with ANY gym.

I love this gym! It is a younger crowd for the most part. However, I do the group fitness classes only, and they attract a wide variety of ages and abilities. The instructors are wonderful and very enthusiastic. Also, I originally joined to use the outdoor swimming pool which is an added bonus during the sumer months. I highly recommend this gym. #Groupfitnessrocks

I've really enjoyed my gym membership. I love that they have so many locations .. based on my schedule and where I am going to be each day, I can check out a different gym. I've loved the indoor pool and sauna at the Canton location, it helps on the really cold days to be able to enjoy those resources. Body pump has literally changed my life! I love the workout, on days when I just don't have the motivation, body pump forces me to get a full workout.
I tried several gyms that are closer to where I live, but none of them felt as vibrant and energetic as Merritt .. for me, its worth a few extra minutes in the car because I actually ENJOY my workouts. I hated missing my favorite tv show while I'm at the gym, but at Merritt, I can watch whatever I want on personal tvs on the elliptical or treadmill .. which motivates me to go to the gym instead of sitting on my butt watching tv at home.

I like this gym, though the fort ave. location does get crowded. I also like that they have gyms all around the city and that I have the option to go to anyone of them. The downside to this particular location is that its tiny for the amount of regulars they have. They just remodeled it and it did help but its still an issue, so avoid the peak hours. The eye candy is the best in Baltimore, sometimes almost too distracting.
