Staff was great and facility was nice. Route setting style left a little to be desired. Energy and vibes were off with this gym though. People seemed on edge and short. First time at a Momentum gym and not overly stoked on it.

Climbing: 5/5 - really good selection of routes - lots of different styles and hold types.

Training: pretty good sized gym with an adjustable spray and TB1.

Vibes: 2/5 - something’s off. It felt like everyone was sizing each other up and there was little encouragement and maybe some insecurity. Idk just happy this isn’t my main gym but an option in the DMV to train.

I would give it 5 stars but the routesetting really does seem pretty meh. I have been coming here for like a month but I haven't really noticed any routes changing. What I have noticed is tags disappearing, and holds disappearing, without being replace. Kinda weird because other reviews keep talking about how much the routes are changed - but I've literally been coming in 2 to 3x a week for a month now.

⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars – Great gym, glitchy social matrix.

I’ve been coming to Movement Columbia for two years now—and I’m not stopping anytime soon. This isn’t hate. This is a friendly broadcast for the socially aware… and the socially anxious.

The gym itself? Fantastic. Clean, spacious, well-equipped, aesthetically immaculate. A solid five stars as a physical location.

But the vibe? That’s where things get… interesting.

There’s this subtle but undeniable social energy glitch that activates the moment you walk in alone.

Like people immediately sense it. You didn’t bring a buddy, a belay partner, or a wellness entourage? Suddenly, you’ve disrupted the natural order. You can feel them clock you—not with malice, but with this soft glitch in the collective script.

“Oh… he’s unaccompanied.”

And if you’re too calm, too focused, too grounded?
Forget it. The hive-mind starts to tremble.

People get shifty. They start adjusting their water bottles unnecessarily. They mirror your stretching. They glance, double-take, pretend not to, then glance again.
You’re not just in the gym—you’re in a stealth social Turing test.

Movement has the equipment of a premium gym…
…but the unspoken politics of a high school lunch table with kettlebells.

If you’re not already “in,” the vibe is low-key energetically TSA-locked.

I’ve literally felt people monitor my aura like:

“Why is he so self-contained? Should we alert the council?”

Don’t get me wrong—I love it here. But this is just a public service announcement for anyone with social anxiety, or anyone who dares to enter solo and sovereign:

Expect great lifts.
Expect clean mats.
Also… expect to be softly surveilled like a rogue element in a yoga-themed Westworld.

Still lifting. Still growing. Still dodging the weird glances like it’s part of the warmup. 😂💪

This is a good climbing gym. In both bouldering and vertical wall climbing, the staff regularly switches up the problems, allowing variety. They operate late hours into the night, and sport a solidly equipped gym for when you don't want to climb anymore. Sometimes the holds are not cleaned enough and collect sweat and residual dust, but that's the only real gripe I have about this place. If you can afford it, it's fun and worthwhile.

Visiting out of state and a friend brought me here, and my visit was amazing. Gym is clean and staff are very friendly shoutout Alex at the front. Will be coming back whenever in the Maryland area!! Boulders are fun and challenging for me since most have a sit or small box start very glad to get humbled.

BE WARNED: Very predatory membership agreements. They’ll sign you up and waive fees just to trap you. Even if you submit in writing that your account needs to be cancelled and demand they don’t charge your card they’ll do it anyway. Every person you talk to says they can’t help you. I emailed, called, went in person—nobody can help you but they’ll charge your card anyway. Ever been upset because you forgot to cancel your Prime membership? Well even if you cancel your gym membership before it expires they’ll get you on the hook for $100. It’s intentionally very difficult to cancel. The only firm available doesn’t give you an option to not agree to another month—so they got you. Terrible customer service.

—update 5/13 they did refund the new membership via email eventually but probably only bc I went full-internet crazy. Heads up bc the riggamaroll. Upgraded to 2 stars. Route setting is good I’d say.

As the staff here is amazing the reason for the one star review is corporate membership team. I have been trying to cancel since September and they never canceled and continued to charge me. Today I received an email that will now cancel but no refund. The gym in Columbia is amazing and so is the staff but it’s the corporate membership team and lack of communication or not canceling my membership that has tons of issues. I would stay away from Movement bc of this.

Routes are absolutely abysmal

Man, what a waste of a great space. This place has everything going for it, but it's seriously squandered by a really bad and unsafe route setting philosophy. Be warned, literally any route over a V3 has no start foot holds. Everything is smearing. It's absolutely terrible. Very unsafe routes. They are asking for injuries here.

Absolutely do not reccomend spending $28 here for a day pass if your like 5'10" or above because you won't fit in the start positions.

We’ve been going to this location for over a year now and have really loved being able to get back into climbing. Routes get changed out fairly often so you will often find something new to try. The facility always seems clean and staff is very friendly. It can get extremely crowded after work and on weekends making it hard to enjoy climbing. I would love to see a gym open up in the Annapolis area. There’s a lack of climbing gyms in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties so it would be nice to see Movement fill that need and maybe some of the congestion from here and other gyms can be shifted around. We’ve also seen kids running around on the mats like they’re in a play area or people even doing back flips on the maps. No one ever says anything to them. Staff shouldn’t have to babysit people in a gym setting but some people clearly aren’t mature enough to be left alone. Rates continue to increase like everywhere and is just making it harder to afford a membership. I at least hope they priority paying their staff a livable wage with these price hikes

1/14/24: Here's an update from an update. They called when a class was going to be canceled, which was nice. For the intro to rock climbing 101 class (taken a 3rd time), they added more things as in gave me and the class members a piece of rope to practice tying a eight knot, and handed out paper with instructions for the belay test and things to memorize for the test.

Only thing that annoys me now is that I have to pay for rentals now when I pay monthly membership. Like why?

10/3/23: The experience became mid. The thursday fitness class got canceled without any notice. No one was there for the class so I was confused. The Tuesday fitness instructor is leaving and looks like they won't have another instructor so fitness classes are going to be gone from the sounds of it. The locker doors are all breaking apart...

It's nice having the full experience of using their rock climbing gym since I got the summer membership. So far, I've tried their intro top rope class and yoga foundation class. Loving it so far 😊👍.

The team here is very kind. However the exorbitant pricing is the reason for 3 stars. The membership costs more than any climbing or traditional gym I’ve given my business to. I understand there’s a lot of classes, workout equipment, and routes available, but that’s useless to me as a Mom whose attendance is limited by childcare. The punch pass makes the most sense given these circumstances, but that’s equally overpriced. It seems like climbing is going the way of a luxury sport in this area.

For the amount of money that members pay, it's ridiculous for this gym to continually have ZERO wipes. It's not just recently but since at least June there's been a problem with the availability of wipes.

It's movement's own POLICY to wipe down gym equipment use, so how are members supposed to do that and care for their own health without wipes??

Ridiculous. Do better!

I left an original view for this place many years ago that was pretty negative. Things have massively improved. I think they must be under new management.

While travelling home last year I went back multiple times to climb here and had a great experience. I think that they changed the belay testing which is a big help. The facility is pretty nice now and they offer lots of amenities. Plus they carry misty mountain harnesses which are the best.

So I give this place a better review now and would go back in the future.

ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM 2015: I follow this up with the fact that i have been climbing for three years now. It has been outside mostly and in the last year, some gym climbing.

This place gets a 2 star rating because they do have a really nice facility. That's about it though. Here's my experience.

1. When I arrived, they immediately grabbed my harness, which is a petzl gym harness. They asked where I had gotten the harness, to which I replied a site online where I paid 60 bucks. At first, I thought they were interested in the harness. It is a good quality harness and fairly simple. Perfect for gym climbing (hence petzl calling it the "Gym" harness). No. They thought I had taken one of theirs. They use a similar harness for kids at this gym. They thought I had stolen it.

2. The harness was considered unsafe for belaying. Ironic since they use them at their gym. I have belayed many times with this particular harness without issue. I was required to use one of their harnesses. While using their harness, I noticed it was worn and old. It loosened slightly through the evening as we climbed. I had to tighten it on a few occasions after noticing it getting loose again and again. It's one of the reasons I bring my own harness. I can trust my harness to be in good condition. I've learned from climbing at gyms here in Utah, that I cannot always trust the gym's gear, hence the reason I bring my own.

3. Belay pass-off. Earth Treks has a ridiculous system. You are not allowed any help and they did not tell me that I was jumping right into the test when I got belayed ceritifed. I thankfully passed because I have been climbing for three years, including outside and belaying for lead climbing outside. I said "belay on" and was corrected. They said that "on belay" is the correct terminology. They clearly do not climb outside. When I climb at a busy crag outside, I don't use those typical commands. I use something that my climber will be able to identify as me AND ONLY me, talking. If my climber hears the belayer next to me yelling "on belay", when in fact I'm off belay, that would be a problem. Being so nit-picky is an issue that gym climbers wouldn't understand. Furthermore, they said my belay technique was incorrect. It wasn't. I attempted to correct it to they way they said was safest. I saw one of their staff belaying a child who was lead climbing. He was lazily grabbing the rope above the ATC with his left hand, in order to move his right hand back down on the loose end of the rope. If she fell while he was doing this, he woudn't have been able to hold on to the rope and might have torn up his hand in the process.

4. After finishing our evening of climbing, a girl walked up to me and identified herself as someone who works there, but was off the clock. She asked if I was "belay ceritifed". She didn't ask nicely. I responded "Yes, I am". She then told me, for the second time on the night, that part of my belay technique was incorrect. She said that they way I was letting slack into the rope to let down my climber was wrong. The issue is that I was following what had been told to me previously by those who did my belay certification in the first place. I was extremely confused. I should have stayed with my original technique that has never had issue in the past.

The facility is clean and has so many options, even when it’s bumpin, it seems there is somewhere to climb. I came here for an Intro to Bouldering class with no knowledge of what to do. The instructor was great at explaining the different levels of climbs and gave plenty of time for us to actually climb instead of just talking. By the end of the course, my arms felt like jello from all the climbing! He was also great at finding something to fit everyone's comfort levels and very encouraging with offering tips but not giving up the whole puzzle. I think this is a fun thing to try if you're looking for a new experience! I'm planning to return to try the roping course.

So, I gave this climbing gym a 5-star rating, back when I first started to coming here regularly. Now that it's been a year, I felt it was necessary to revise my first impression.

My main gripe: the monthly membership fee has increased twice (!!!) within the past year. It's now about $100/month. For what you get, I feel like it's kinda outrageous, especially since they advertise themselves as being inclusive.

More long-term, I would really urge them to consider a sliding-scale membership pricing option as well as additional pricing tiers and sponsor-a-membership drives.

I'm really torn on this review. I love to climb and it's an excellent climbing gym with tons of non-climbing stuff to do. The routes are fun and accurate. It's clean, the staff is alright, and it's just a good vibe all around.

The only reason I'm knocking some stars off is that I've been a member of ET so long I remember when it actually used to be pretty affordable. At it's current price point, it really wipes out the abilities for anyone who is not of means to get involved and that is just not OK. It's gentrified itself. It's messed up. Ever since they went corporate, it's just gone up, up, and away. Even the 7 pass "deal" ain't much of a deal anymore.

The climbing community can't really diversify when so many people are just priced out. A lot of younger people would get started in the gym - a lot of the greats did - but I worry we're pricing future greats out of this incredible sport.

I used to be a member for almost a year and a half, but recently ended my membership after the second increase in rates within one year. I know several other long-term members that have also left for the same reason. Now, for a single person, it costs nearly $1200 per year. In what world can I justify spending $1200 in a year for a gym membership, I don't know. Look, I get it. Inflation is hitting everyone, but it's also hitting your customers who don't have $1.2k to spare a year on a gym membership.

To add on, when I emailed the gym to complain about the rate hikes, they let me know they plan to increase rates annually from now on. I would suggest the management to add tiered memberships, as many people like me don't even need all those perks that are listed -- I just want to climb. Or, even have discounted memberships for off-peak hours, like early mornings or mid-day.

I will say that I enjoyed the routes while I was there, especially the obstacle course style ones they had in the top rope area. I do wish they changed them more frequently, as some would be left on the wall for over 3 months. We took the Intro to Lead class a few months ago and that was also very well taught.

Pushed us both to try more climbs without ever feeling uncomfortable or pressured; we did a lot more than we ever would've been able to on our own.

I have a fear of falling, that dropping sensation hits my lizard brain and I just shut down. I mentioned this to Hunter, and he made sure I was always supported on the belay system, so I didn't ever feel like I was dropping, even from 40 feet up 8D

Gym itself had TONS of problems, both on the ropes and bouldering; was clean, staff was friendly and engaging; met a few other climbers there who were very encouraging too. It was just a fantastic experience all around. Couldn't ask for a better first time 8D Definitely going back again 8D

Amazing, friendly, huge boulder and climb areas. Also, has a speed climb and enough TR locations to stay busy. Consistent updates to the walls

Tied with the Crystal City location for best climbing gym in the DMV area. For the last few months in particular, the route setters for the bouldering area have been killing it. The walls/holds are kept clean as well (A pet peeve of mine since nasty holds are the quickest way to decrease the quality of your bouldering experience).

Great place for rock climbing. The facility is well maintained. Came with friends and had a great time. Very challenging. I might get a membership if my friends decide to come here more often.

Newest earth treks in Maryland? yet for years the wifi doesn't work? Works for a month after the last flood by at&t now it's back to not working at all, if we weren't inside a lead box and my phone got reception this wouldn't be an issue

Overall nice gym. Lots of bouldering and top rope, no autobelay. The first time I went I noted that I had never been to the gym, and the staff didn't make any effort to show me around or tell me where things were, which was strange to me. On a positive note, I went here for a learn to Lead course, and unfortunately I got covid and couldn't do the second lesson. The gym was amazing about canceling the lesson and processing a refund since no other classes worked with my schedule.

The front staff was phenomenal they answered all of our questions they were extremely helpful. We bought a week membership since I'm on vacation visiting family. They had a little boutique area where you could buy rock climbing or bouldering gear it was small but the products looked really nice the clothing looked awesome. And the inside has rock climbing and little bouldering walls everywhere which was really nice they had an area for yoga which I did not do. But we worked out there and had a great workout and then we went bouldering. They rent out the shoes for you if you don't have your own. And if you want to rock climb you have to take a little class first before they cut you loose rock climbing. You have to sign your waivers and the experience was just awesome. Really fun place if you want some exercise and some fun but you don't want the traditional type of exercise they had a free weight room it was small but it was really good for it you know building up those muscles you need for rock climbing and bouldering and they had a couple machines. Even though they were doing some construction so they had some areas closed off we really had a great time.

Most bouldering routes I’ve seen in one gym. Out of town climbing with friends but the community vibe was great. Grading was on the east side but TONS of variety. Would be a member if I was closer!
