While it's an excellent rock climbing gym overall, they don't have adequate air-conditioning or just don't want to spend money on it.
It's hard to breathe in the Earth Treks Rockville facility during the hot summer. Air conditioners and fans are inadequate. The only breathable location is near the entrance where, surprisingly, staff spend time.

Otherwise it is a great and friendly place with good climbing walls, a bouldering area and a general gym.

We love it at movement. Been to many other gyms and find they do a great job. From the setting to the front desk staff to the classes great job. One recommendation I have would be to have some maintenance on the bouldering holds brushing off the holds. My 14yo has tactile issues and doesn’t use chalk. After the hordes descend the chalk builds up and the holds have significant chalk buildup. Thanks again, the caring shows through.

I visited Movement while on a work trip to Washington.
Came in the evening after work commitments, and asked about auto belays.

The guy who worked there was AMAZING:

Said, no auto belays but there's a group meeting every Wednesday at 6:30, in 10 minutes, who buddy partner for belayers.

So if you wait 10 minutes, I can add you to their group booking and get you half price AND pair you with a belayer.

Sure enough, I joined the group, the leader asked everyone's grades and experience and paired me with an outstanding and incredibly nice climber who knocked off 5.11 after 5.11 for 2 1/2 hours.

Awesome to be made so welcome on a random turn up to a gym.

We had an amazing time at Movement Climbing! I came with my two daughters, and we all had such a great experience. What made our day truly special was our instructor, Rafael. He was absolutely the best — kind, encouraging, and super professional. Thanks to him, my kids felt confident and had a lot of fun. We’re definitely coming back!

Kids are seriously and increasingly out of control. Staff and parents seem to either not care or somehow not notice. Make sure you have someone with you to block the little suicidal rascals while you're on the wall. Unfortunately only a matter of time before a kid gets seriously hurt and someone has to live with hurting a kid due to staff and parents ignorance.

this gym is a staple in our community. If you climb, you know, movement Rockville, or maybe earth treks, which was the gym that this was before movement purchased it. personally, I'm happy with movements acquisition because I feel as a Jim member. I now get more out of my membership. I love visiting the other locations and having gyms nearby when I travel because movement is such a big company. I've also noticed improvements in the climbing areas as well as the other areas of the gym even the bathrooms got renovated at this gym. The setting is fun here and it's a good spot for beginners or advanced climbers.

Climbing Gym to Daycare. What was once a great Earth Treks climbing gym, where members shared a vibe of respect and enthusiasm for rock climbing, has become a corporate center appealing to parents with no passion for climbing as a place to dump their children. These children run free, unsupervised, either taking over the wall and blocking access for others to climb or wandering dumbfounded underneath climbers awaiting injury.

Love the old school feel of the gym! Nice to have routes that are different from many of the newer gyms - reminds me of when I started climbing. However, the lead ropes are in poor condition. Sheath was separated, and they bent totally flat. If you intend to lead in this location bring your own rope or go to a gym with newer ropes. If someone had a bad whipper on these ropes it may not end well.

Needs some work. The walls and routes are great, but their insistence on using hard-attached grigris AND double-wrapping the ropes makes belaying an insufferable affair. A lot of the grigris and ropes are old, and it's almost impossible on certain routes to lower someone without constantly forcing the rope through. Totally unnecessary.

Source: Google

★ 5

Great gym. The top rope routes were set really well and bouldering seemed decent. The place was well kept with nice bathrooms with showers and lockers. Every wall has a gri gri which was neat, and the people were nice who worked there. Overall, great place to go to rock climbing (I would say grading is pretty soft though 😝).

This is a great climbing gym with a wonderful community! Everyone is welcoming and friendly. It's great if you are nervous or a first time climber. They have a small gym area with dumbells, barbells, and cardio equipment as well. It is most crowded in the evenings on weekdays and mid-day during weekends. Pretty empty weekends in the mornings and evenings if you want to avoid crowds.

Hey Movement,
Time for a little of tough love. I’ve been a member since 2012. The last few month I’ve been bringing to your attention that the lead ropes are in a poor shape. Every single visit I had to ask for a rope in a “better shape”…today my replacement rope (pictured) didn’t meet a basic check either. Your membership isn’t cheap but regardless of the price those ropes are what keep us safe. Today, two other parties also asked for better ropes. Are we waiting for an accident before you guys do what we’re paying for? I hate to be posting this but my repeated feedback seems to be falling on deaf ears.
I don’t remember having this issue when the gym was EarthTreks…

A lot of gyms claim to be inclusive, but Movement is the real deal. On my first visit, I was relieved to see people of all races, ages, and sizes climbing. There's a pride flag proudly displayed by the entrance and a community announcement board with sign up sheets for meet ups specifically for LGBTQ+, deaf, and BIPOC climbers (and I think anyone can host one for their specific interests).

Beyond the awesome culture, the staff and facilities are top-notch. The place is immaculately clean, well organized, and boasts tons of fun climbing and bouldering routes. There are helpful signs throughout with etiquette and terminology reminders, route ratings, and tips on how to use equipment.
I love this place and plan to come back regularly!

Pro tip: If you want to come just once in a while, save money by getting the 7 day pass package instead of a monthly membership. You can use the passes anytime (at multiple gyms) they never expire, and you can use one to bring a guest!

Great venue, great climbing, and great staff! I came here with some friends for a one-hour climb (many of them doing it for the first time), and we all had a blast. Awesome place to rock climb! This place has literally everything you need to have a blast. This place also has a gym to workout and to work on your grip. They also sell cloths, climbing shoes, harness and energy drinks.

5 stars for 5 reasons

1. Great customer service is also provided by the staff! Everyone is literally friendly and nice.

2. Climbs that accommodate all age range from easy to difficult! Different section have different heights. Super fun climbs!

3. There is a gym that is under renovation but they literally have dumb bells, bench press and many more machines. There is also grip strength equipment as well.

4. Bouldering is awesome as well and super fun. Every so often they switch it up and it’s fun.

5. Price is relatively decent for what you get. I pay 108 per month and i think it’s worth it if you go often.

I have so much love for what this gym used to be prior to the merger and subsequent private equity funding that has drastically changed everything.

The pros:
•Staff are mostly great, some newer staff are maybe a bit too eager to show off how much more they know than you (even if that's not the case, actually doesn't feel great when they talk down to you without gauging your skill level or understanding what you're asking.....), but for the most part, the staff has been solid.
•The various terrain for climbs
•The volume of climbs available
•The new murals are nice

The cons:
•Prices keep going up.
•Community building is essentially gone. There are some half hearted attempts at bringing back events that really built up the community, but it feel soulless now. The Tommy Bell memorial photo contest hasn't run in years, which is a shame, given how big of a part of the community he was.
•The setting team has rotated so much since the pandemic, that it often just feels wildly inconsistent; which is a shame, because I absolutely loved the setting in the before times. I would have defended them all the way. Lately, in the past two years or so though, the clip lines for sport climbs have gotten mega sketchy, bouldering grades are inconsistent, it's a huge bummer. The flow isn't there sometimes, and it honestly just isn't as fun anymore.
•Not a great use of the terrain. There is SO much terrain here, and a bunch of neat features, but half the time, the climbs on them are fairly lackluster now, and don't highlight the joy of having these features even there. This is especially true for roped climbs.
•The complete dissolution of the outdoor school. There was a strong, mega robust outdoor school that was dissolved around 2019. It's a huge shame, because around the same time, the quality of classes for members also went down. There are less advanced skill classes, so if you want to grow your skillset, you're better off looking elsewhere or finding a mentor now. If you're an indoor climber, you'll be fine, but if you ever want to venture outdoors, good luck.
•No more top out area for bouldering. I know the death star was a huge annoyance for setting on, but damn was it a cool feature. Also a bummer if you ever want to get outside and boulder now as most of the boulders are top outs. Yes, I know there's a shiny new training area in its place, but it's still a bummer.
•Nothing ever gets fixed in time, machines will be out of order for weeks.
•The bathrooms are all run down, some toilet seats are crusted in what I assume is crusted liquid....
•Weight room equipment is in a general and constant state of disrepair. The squat racks are not lined up evenly, the benches are a mess and just duct taped over....

Honestly for the amount of money we were paying, it just didn't make sense to stay as members anymore. They also just recently raised prices yet again...for the longest time, members would ask for longer hours, ask for changes, etc. and these have only recently been addressed because a newer climbing gym has opened up nearby. It was too little, too late from Movement, which makes me so sad. I've had a lot of lovely memories here, and I'm honestly heart broken that it's gone from the flagship gym of Earth Treks, to the abandoned gym of Movement.

I recently moved to the area and was itching to get back to climbing. I drove in during rush hour and started the hunt for a spot, which was brutal but to honest is par for the course for most climbing gyms on weekday evenings. I went in, bought my first monthly membership, and got to climbing. People were generally very nice and I was so excited I found my new home... until I met one of the employees at the gym. We casually met while waiting in the bouldering area and then he went back to his discussion with another group nearby. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but I overheard this man loudly talking to another guy about his service in the Israeli army and bragging about the things he had done. The things he was saying were disgusting and repulsive, especially in the context of what has been on the news over the past month. Shame on Movement for employing former IDF soldiers in their gyms, and shame on me for buying a monthly membership before getting a sense of that gym's culture.

At $248/month for a family of four, which doesn't include equipment rental fees, a membership at Movement is expensive and really only grants you access to climbing. All in all, there isn't enough value here to justify a membership.

Editing this review after the Movement rebranding: This gym has practically eliminated climbing-focused classes and clinics beyond Intro to Climbing (ZERO offerings for the next few months at local gyms...this is still a climbing center, no?) while continuing to jack up the cost of membership. Rendezvous and all-inclusive community events are a distant memory. It's a mystery where the money is going, because the facilities have not changed in years.

Still the best climbing centers in the area, but they've lost touch with people who attend climbing gyms to climb.

Gyms were better before Movement took over. They consolidated all of the DC area Earth Treks social media account into one poorly managed one. They don’t seem to do a good job advertising the events like Parter Meetups and Rendezvous that helped give the gyms a nice local character. They recently raised membership dues without making any kind of improvement. As for Rockville specifically, it is kind of a tired old gym in need of renovations. Columbia is definitely a nicer location and the route setting is a lot better than Rockville.

Compared to the earth treks in Columbia, Hampden and crystal city, this location is a bit of a disappointment. The cost for membership is higher cuz it’s around DC. However, the gym is much smaller than the other locations, especially the bouldering area, probably only 1/3 of the locations I mentioned above. The holds are generally more worn down. Not sure if the settings are cleaning these holds routinely, but some often get dirty and super slippery.

It’s great all around. Friendly staff, lots of climbing routes for both bouldering and top rope / lead climbing. Not bad for their membership price either.

Great routes, great walls, great vibes. Went in there to get a good work out and was impressed with the diversity the routsetters crafted. Standard work out area is a bit small, but offers everything you might need to get that pump going. Very creative and effective use of space.

This is a great gym! The staff is very friendly, the community is respectful, and the climbing selection is awesome. It is good for beginners and experienced climbers. Every week there is something new to climb. You get about 2 months to try a certain climb giving you plenty of time to project it. The only thing they don't have at this gym is auto belayers for those that want to do top rope climbing without a partner.

The gym that got me into climbing: I did the intro plus course that taught you how to belay, trial punch card membership, and now have a full membership.

The staff are very nice and helpful, especially with ordering gear from the store. The gym is clean and follows social distancing protocols with plenty of hand sanitizer. The website is easy to use for making reservations and seeing how busy the gym is currently.

10/10 would recommend, just don’t book my my 8:45-closing slot ;)

Fantastic community oriented climbing gym! A few things I love about Earth Treks Rockville: excellent range of classes for beginner through intermediate indoor and outdoor climbers, well maintained climbing walls with a talented setting team, great customer service with friendly, knowledgeable staff, and a range of community events.

I decided to try a Book a Climb where an instructor shows you the basics of rockclimbing and you get to go up a few times. Kira was the instructor and was very personable, friendly, and encouraging. I then went on to take an Intro to Rockclimbing class where I learned to belay and climbed a couple times. Tim was the instructor and I thought the class was thorough and informative. I actually was able to stay and belay with someone else and felt confident following that class! They offer a trial two week membership following the class which I think is an awesome opportunity and will give me the chance to see if I'd like to sign up! I really enjoy the environment there, everyone is very nice and conscientious and I found the facility to be clean and inviting. Rockclimbing is challenging and different but they definitely make it easy to learn and get involved! Highly recommend to anyone looking for an activity that will get you moving and wants to challenge themselves both mentally and physically!
