Just had to share an encounter I had with the staff. I saw one of the team members cleaning the arm area for a very long time so I asked her why she is cleaning this extensively since I have never seen the staff do this before. I’ve been coming to the gym for years, and I have never seen the arm machines broken apart and cleaned inside I was impressed! She told me the staff is working on cleaning better and this will be normal procedure from now on. She showed me other places I could go to use the machines I wanted too since the ones I wanted were being cleaned. I’m happy to know the staff care about the status of the gum because for awhile it was going downhill and very dirty. Great job Columbia! And thank you Ella. 5 star!

This is one of the smaller Planet Fitness locations, but gets the job done. Bikes are too close to the small open area where club members work out. And more upright bikes would be beneficial. Maybe get rid of a few recumbent bikes. Members spend way too much time on certain machines while using their phones. They do a great job of keeping the facility clean. All staff members are very pleasant.

Caught night crew, going through my locker , after I saw him he tried to play it off by saying make sure you take your stuff when you go Which I have always done. I later discovered my cologne and breath mints along with a hat were all gone. On top of that if he’s going to steal the least he could do is clean the showers and lockers he’s stealing from. Would really love to know what hours management is in so this can be addressed but I’m calling the health department down the street regardless.

Sooo disappointing! These people are not welcoming and most members have an attitude. I had scheduled my ‘new member’ and ‘build my program’ sessions. My program was sent in a text message with a PDF. When I came in, I asked if someone could walk me through the machines because I had no idea where they were or how they work. The guy at the front desk told me that they were not allowed to help me. Then I asked the trainer and he told me to google it. I want to cancel this but it’s going to cost me over $100. You get what you paid for!

Aug 28 2025 initial review, first time here using the "black card" privilege lol as this isnt my home gym. The front desk staff were cordial, I spoke and greeted them and they returned the verbal exchange with professionalism. The gym is smaller than my home gym upon first sight. I enter the Mens locker room and the locker room was small but fairly clean. I check to see if they have showers and if they worked and they did but it reeked of strong urine and the shower stalls weren't that well cleaned, granted it was 12 noon so it could've been not cleaned after constant use, but I digress. I enter the gym floor and has decent weights and smith machines. Plenty of Treadmills, and Ellipticals. Was able to get a good workout in, and the showers were hot not well cleaned and super strong urine smell. 4/5 stars would return just needs to clean Mens shower/locker room better.

This location in (dobbin)Columbia, Maryland has an ongoing pest issue not sure what kind of bugs they are, I counted at least 10 in the back area near the emergency exit door. Can’t get a good workout without thinking something will crawl on me. Be careful

I’ve been trying to transfer my membership to another location, but they keep saying there’s a “system problem.” One time they told me it was already transferred and to wait 24 hours—but nothing happened. After that, they just blamed the system again. There’s no manager available to speak with or provide a clear answer. Very disappointing and unprofessional.

This has to be the smallest planet fitness I have ever been in. It's tight I mean really tight. Doesn't have enough smith machines, none of the hack squat or plate loaded machines. Also no incline bench press machine

I’ve been a loyal Planet Fitness member since 2021, but my experience at the Columbia Dobbin Center location has been extremely disappointing. On April 24, 2025, I was verbally threatened by another gym member while using the 365 machine. I stayed calm, filed a police report, and asked staff to review the cameras — but my concerns were dismissed without proper follow-up. I believe this was due to racial and personal bias, as the staff appeared to sympathize with the other party and offered him an apology — not me.
On August 2, 2025, I found an unattended phone in the gym and returned it to a staff member. Instead of appreciation, I was met with hostility. When I calmly reminded the staff of the previous unresolved safety concern and raised the issue of possible bias, I was treated defensively and disrespectfully — again.

I couldn’t even finish my workout that day, and I had to call the police to document what I experienced. This is not how any member should be treated for raising legitimate safety and fairness concerns.

I’ve since submitted formal complaints and requested that security footage from both incidents be preserved. I’m sharing this review so others are aware that bias and retaliation are serious issues that can occur here, and so that Planet Fitness leadership is held accountable for ensuring a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all members.

They say planet fitness is a beginners gym but I’ve seen some decent ones that you could actually get away with but this location is the beginners or all beginners gym. They only have like 1 machine per muscle group cuz the majority of the space is taken up by cardio machines, lose some of those and put more machines in. The attachments for the cables are uncomfortable and they don’t even have a straight bar or a traditional v bar. They don’t have the newer chest press that I’ve seen advertised everywhere else, they don’t have any good glute machines , just a kick back which is very uncomfortable, especially if you’re shorter. This place just needs a lot more added to it. I typically go to a bigger gym but go here with a co worker just cuz he has a visitor pass, if it wasn’t for that, I’d never come here.

You can't beat the price. There is enough variety of equipment to get a good workout even if it is busy. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because it takes way too for repairs to happen when things inevitably break.
(UPDATE) The low cost does not excuse not doing basic cleaning. The floor in the men's locker room has not been mopped in nearly a month. I have not seen any equipment being cleaned by staff. The whole place is just gross. I'll be cancelling my membership.

My only real gripe is that the stair climbers are always inoperable. There are only 4 to begin with. You're lucky if two of them are working at any given time. Management should consider replacing them with new ones. Oh, and the showers could stand to be cleaned more frequently.

I have been a black member for a number of years and visited many locations but this one right here needs alot of attention when it comes to keeping the place clean. It blew my mind to see how you could take a shower after your work out in the conditions the bathrooms are kept. It seems like they have not been cleaned in a long time. It is vital to keep such an area clean. I wouldn't recommed this location to no body because sickness is right around the corner.

I specifically got a gym membership to be able to use the 30 min express since I’m not a big gym person and its effectiveness in time. Even though the sign says the area is reserved for people using that circuit and monitored it’s not. Every time I go there are people just sitting on machines even after the buzzer beeps often for many rotations , others that use certain machines as personal machine for 10-15 min when the timers are for 60 seconds each station. Or people that walk from the floor to a specific machine and throws off the flow of that was next in your rotation. Dosen’t seem worth the money when you can’t use what you paid for effectively

This particular location seems to have changed in the last 6-8 months. General workout area is dirty. Use to see the machines and the floors getting cleaned regularly (in the mornings). It appears that is no longer happening. The women’s restroom stinks. Floors are dirty. I have never used the showers, but definitely would not now since I can’t trust they are getting cleaned and sanitized regularly. Staff use to greet you once you enter/leave, now they barely look up from their phones. Not sure what happened, but not the same gym I joined over a year ago.

Horrible experience trying to cancel you apparently have to cancel from the gym you signed up at, which is several states away from me now. They told me to send a letter. I wouldn't sign up if I were you.

I have the black card that's supposed to let you into any gym in the country but never got a key fob so they said that couldn't find me. Not sure how a national gym membership works if they can't find your info outside your home gym

Lately the staff stay on their phones and aren't cleaning the men's locker room. They also have been allowing homeless people sleep in the hydrobeds and bathroom stalls, daily, since January when I moved here! Let me preface by saying I have literally wrote less than 10 total reviews of any business in my 38 years of living. It amazes me how long the staff allows people to use 1 machine, mainly the smith press/machine. People will grab multiple pairs of dumbbells and do a full 2 hour workout using just the smith press and Im at a point where I am probably just going to switch gyms. This is a goof gym if you plan on arriving at 4am or prior to claim the machines otherwise keep it moving.

The location is super convenient, the premises is always kept clean both on the floor and in the ladies bathroom and shower room, rarely if ever do I see a machine broken down (which I have in several other locations in MD), the staff members are always smiling and friendly.
Only one tiny thing I have noticed though (which has no effect on my rating) is that the manager or whoever resides in the office during middle afternoons always takes time to say hi and speakwith pretty young girls and as a 50+ year old woman it would be nice to get a hello or some type of acknowledgement ☺️

I’ve been training/working out in gyms for 30+ years and I go to Planet Fitness all over the country. This is by far the worst one that I’ve ever gone to. The mens bathroom is small and consistently dirty, a lot of people who work out?? there are eating on the workout floor, wearing crocs etc. Today there was a man who placed his phone on a flat bench in the dumbbell area, and just proceeded to dance around it and not utilize it at all! Just dance around it looking at himself in the mirror! When asked was he using the bench he stated “my phone is on it so yea! I know the staff saw him doing nothing with the bench because their desk is in front of that area!! I only go there because it’s close to my home. I do go to the others gyms in the area and only go here as a last resort.

I have been coming to this location for a while and never had an issue until tonight. I usually deal with a pleasant young lady that does body building. She is amazing. But tonight I ran into new people some random girl and a clearly new Assistant Club Manager. The Assistant Club Manager asked me as I walked in to remove my mask so he can check my identity. I asked why and he said that the location just got robbed a couple of days ago and the robbers went thru the lockers. I was like really. I first thought I don’t want to come to a place that crimes are happening as I’m working out. That is scary. I then asked do I look like the robbers and I thought that the request was inappropriate and the reason didn’t seem right. I was immediately irritated. I complied but then tried to workout but it bother me that the front desk folks stepped over the line so I wanted to alert the owners and management that they need to be very careful of their screening procedures. I will be reporting this experience because no one should have to be treated like this. There is a right and a wrong way to screen people for whatever the reason but disclosing that crime is happening at that location and then treating regulars like a potential criminal is just wrong. Your people need training asap.

I like this planet fitness. The employees keep it clean on a regular basis and most of them are friendly. Its a decent size, but a few of the machines like the stair master seems to always be broken. Its not the club’s fault, but the only real complaint I have is that it seems like it doesn’t matter what time I go theres always people at this gym. I went at 4 am a few times and still almost had to wait for a machine (there was 4 and 3 were being used).

I always come to this gym, I really like it but unfortunately today I saw a very unfair act, I don't know the names of the gentlemen so they will be Mr. A and Mr. B, and Mr. A is a friend of one of the employees there, he had the bars of weights, and he had another exercise station for himself (Mr. A) Unfortunately, some of the other weight bars were useless. I feel that it is not fair that someone has those bars for more than an hour without using them all the time. An older man comes, who is Mr. B, moves Mr. A's bottle water that he had next to the bar and looks everywhere, no one said anything to him until Mr. A finished his exercise in the other machine, he comes and yells at Mr. B put back put back horrible yelling at him and I even got nervous. After that, Mr. B got angry as the other man spoke to him, he went to file a complaint with the employee's Mr. (who is a friend of Mr. A), he did nothing. But Mr. B continued to fight with Mr. A. He kept bothering him, the employee friend of Mr. A came and yelled twice at Mr. B to leave the Mr. alone. (That supposedly bothered the rest of us who exercised) So I don't understand why when Mr. B was disrespected or continue argument and Mr. A seemed like the owner of the gym, because he treats people bad way, but if he yells at Mr. B. I honestly disagree that Mr. B should have continued with the problem when he saw that the employee did nothing, he should have called the corporation. But I understand in the end he called the police because he despaired of so many injustices. Mr. A shouldn't have talked to him like that, I was close and I got super nervous, he scared me. I almost had a nervous breakdown, I tried to ignore them. The employee should not have a preference for his friends. I hope the corporation does something.
