I contemplated writing this review for the past four months because every time I start writing, I decide to stop, hoping things will get better in the gym, but the gym is at a point of no return unless the owners take some serious actions.
I have been a member for three years, and when I first joined, the gym was in great shape. But unfortunately, the gym started to take a turn for the worse in the last six months.
Here are some issues:
Most of the machines are broken.
Other equipment is falling apart. For example, the ropes are shredded, most cable machines are missing carabiner hooks, the assault bike has been missing a seat for four months, and the squat platform is outright dangerous from all the wood splinters.
The gym is not clean, and there is usually only one paper towel roll.
The toilets are cleaned maybe once a day.

This is my last month at this gym, and writing this review breaks my heart. And I really hope the owners do something about the gym to save it from going under.

Pros: close to my apartment, lots of free weights, child watch

Cons: never have protein for smoothies, never have their cooler stocked. Half the sinks in the men's locker room don't work. Machines stay broken. Desk workers say it's a "corporate problem". They're closing sadly.

No wonder why no people in the gym. Half of all the machines are broken and it’s been several months now. Sometimes they don’t even have paper towels at all for weeks, so you have to take your sweat off with toilet paper. It seems like about to be closed permanently. No employees and owner care at all

I was a member for 3 years. Went almost every day. I noticed a gradual decline in this gym over the years. Place is filthy, and cleaning supplies are frequently unavailable. They have multiple bent barbells that messed up my wrist. There is a clock that hasn’t been fixed in over a year. The water fountain was out of order for upwards of a year as well. Cancelling my membership was an unreal experience. They required 2 weeks of advanced notice “just because their computer system is slow”. The front desk staff just shrugged their shoulders and said I would get a call… I never got a call. Bathrooms are disgusting. They constantly reek of feces and the showers take 10 minutes to get warm. Nobody ever cleans them. I couldn’t even bring my girlfriend because she said the place was “too gross”. Probably also why most of the members are men. I can see why women wouldn’t want to be a member. Overall I’m shocked the place stays in business.

I am a long time member of this gym. It use to be very nice here. All machines worked, bathrooms were clean and facial tissues were always stocked. Recently, the gym fails to remain like that. It has been god knows how long that 4 machines have remained unfunctional. There is one near the chest fly machine, a treadmill near the other end and many other machines that have been closed for so so long. Secondly, the bathrooms. The bathrooms are so dirty. The auto-flush mechanism doesn't work anymore which is why people don't even flush and its so disgusting. Thirdly, the facial tissues. The gym seems to have many areas where tissues are available to wipe off sweat but recently, with several machines that dispense tissues, only 1 seems to work which is always on the other end of the building from where i work out.

I’ve been going to this gym for about a year and a half. I’ve been going to gyms for about 10 years, and this is the 5th gym I’ve been a part of. Retro is a great value proposition, especially if you use the guest pass (unlimited uses). I’m primarily a lifter, so I’m usually looking for diversity/selection of equipment in the weight room. This location doesn’t have the greatest selection, but that’s to be expected since it appears Retro is trying to appeal to the broadest audience possible. It still has plenty of choices for a good workout. There’s two squat racks outside of the personal training area, two flat benches, a single decline and incline bench, and one proper deadlift platform. Since one of the squat racks shares the dead lift platform, there can be wait times, but it’s usually not an issue for me. There are only stiff bars which is fine for most people. The dumbbell area gets extremely congested in the back corner of the weight room, and as such, it encourages people to camp out on one of the few adjustable benches to make the most of their time. If it were my decision, based purely off observation, I’d scrap about half the treadmills (never seen that area remotely close to full capacity) and create a separate dumbbell area to balance the weight room congestion.

My main complaint, which is why I won’t give higher than 3 stars, is that the water refill station has been broken for over a half a year. I’ve mentioned it to several staff members at the front, who told me they floated it to management and didn’t get a timeline on its repair. If the price of membership was raised and the value proposition was weakened, this alone would push me to cancel my subscription.

EDIT: it has been 2 months since I posted my review and the water refill station has been fixed! Bumping my review from 3 to 4 stars.

When canceling my gym membership before going off to college I had to pay a 40 dollar fee which was not told to me until after I saw the charge 2 hours later appear on my card. Then 5 months into my fall semester I realize I have been getting charged for 30 bucks a month. While being home for Christmas break I went to the gym to bring this to light and they instantly agreed I had been wrongly charged and that a a refund should be issued, which I would need a manager for. I’ve been trying for 2 weeks to get my refund every time I’m downplayed, ignored, or told and incorrect time to call or come talk to a manger. Much better options out there I will not be going back here and I still have not received my refund.

The gym is relatively uncrowded, has a good selection of machinery, and the layout is logical and well-designed. With this being said, many machines are frequently in disrepair, the gym is often dirty with no wipes or spray being available at each station, and the bathrooms hand dryers and soap dispensers rarely work. This lack of sanitization is also reflected in the majority of the staff's indifference to providing a positive experience. In addition, the enclosed area for personal training members only takes up a disproportionate amount of space compared to members utilizing it, and I believe it should be accessible to all members!

You pay for a full month but only get three weeks worth. When canceling 7 days prior, the representative at the front desk confirms that you can still come for the remaining week until your month finishes. The next day, a different front desk representative says you can not continue. So basically, you pay for a month but can only get 3 weeks. If you want to try it out for a month or two, it’s not really worth it. Very disappointing.

TLDR; Not the best gym, not the worst.

The staff is mostly friendly but it seems like most of them don’t want to leave the front desk to clean, restock paper towels, toilet paper, etc.

As other reviews mentioned, the team classes are really annoying to other members. They take over half the gym and I find it disruptive to my workout. The trainers will definitely throw some shade towards you if you are anywhere near “their area” during their classes. Although some of the classes do seem worth taking if you’re interested in group workouts.

There’s generally a good mix of people from casual gym goers to more serious gym rats. Most everyone follows normal gym etiquette, although it seems that no one knows how to stack the dumbbells in the right spot. Like most gyms it’s usually busy weekday evenings and empty midmorning/afternoon on weekdays and weekends. I can’t speak for early mornings as I don’t workout at that time.

There’s not too many machines but they’re in decent condition, although there’s usually 2-3 that are broken at a time.

The showers are decent but take forever to warm up. The locker room is alright and mostly clean.

Everyone complains about the problems canceling the membership but it’s not this specific locations fault. I’ve cancelled my membership a few years ago at another location and had the same issues. I believe that it’s their corporate policy not the specific gym’s. And there are other gyms that make it difficult to cancel memberships.

Overall, it’s a simple midrange gym and it’s not a bad spot to workout if you live close by.

I have been going to this gym for a year and half and I at first loved it. The environment was great and it was not as populated. But recently they started increasing "TEAM" exercises which are just classes, and I never minded that. However, they started taking up the whole green field, during the busiest time. This in general would not be a big deal! But the coaches/trainers already have a big caged area that takes up most of the gym that regular customers are not allowed in, only their clients, they will kick you out if they even see you walking into this cage of theirs. This is a small gym, and their cage takes up a big portion so you would think they would be considerate and leave the rest of the gym for the other customers, But no! During their team exercises they use the cage and the green field that is right in the middle of the gym. If we even try to walk or workout on the field while they're doing Team exercises they get upset and rudely tell you to move. The gym is small, the trainers/coaches should be considerate where they're doing their classes especially during busy times when the gym is already crowded. They have their big "cage" for a reason, nobody would bother them if they stuck to it during the busy times.This is the only retro I've gone to that has this forbidden "cage", I've trained at the Annapolis and New Jersey retro and neither have this problem. I advise upper management to rethink their layout.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!
go somewhere else even if it is a bit more expensive, it will save you the headache. I will update again if I ever get a refund.

Machines get fixed but after a little while. Great cardio machines but racks and weight machines are cheaply made. Unsanitary and VERY disorganized. Gym etiquette is not something that the people that go here do very often. Benches are slippery and very thin which is far from regulation so don’t waste your time.

I really enjoy coming to this gym but my only complaint is it is very aggravating that staff does not stay on top of making sure the paper towel dispensers are full and working as well as the spray bottles I know of 4 stations that have cleaning spray and paper towels set up to wipe down the equipment when you are done using them and majority of the time when I come there first thing in the morning 3 of them either have no paper towels or sanitizing spray bottles are empty I have to always go to the front desk to request they be refilled. Retro Fitness if you want us as patrons to do our part in wiping down the equipment when done you have to do your part to make sure the sanitizing stations are stocked.

Interesting.. read the reviews before you sign up about cancelling because there is a trend and it seems like the issue is not fixed with their team.

My husband tried to cancel his membership on 7/13/22 front desk associate with a beard told him that he can’t do that because the card on file was already charged.. mind you this person didn’t even really seem like he checked the account. Funny enough, my husband said his membership doesn’t renew till the 22nd. Which the person then states that he needs to give a 7day notice so he will be charged regardless… now if you are still reading this- how many days are in between 7/13 and 7/22? He had more than enough time to cancel.

Not to mention, he was cancelling just so he can change to sign up with retro through his job…change of plans doesn’t matter how close this place is to our house- lifetime fitness it is.

Canceling your membership with this gym is the WORST. Once you’re a member it’s like you’re a member for life because they’ll say you’re membership is canceled but your card will still be charged. When I cancelled my membership it wasn’t until months after when I was at my bank that I realized they were still charging me. And when I did go up there the person at the front said “oh the person who canceled you didn’t do it correctly”. How do you cancel a membership incorrectly? I warned my husband before he signed up about this but he gave it a try anyway and he just canceled his membership today so let’s hope what happened to me and many others doesn’t happen to him. I would not recommend this gym to anyone. Honestly my planet fitness membership was better or try the Merritt

Gym is a bit small, lighting can be better, dumbbell rack needs to be 3x-4x the size, machine variety can be better. When I went all weights were scrambled on the dumbbell rack & barbell rack.

I enjoy the strong classes, which is essentially personal training, but with up to four people per trainer. This is great because I can take the classes three days a week and hit all muscle groups, for only $150 a month. Cardio equipment is top notch. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Only suggestion would be to poll the customers to think about turning the "cardio theater" into an additional free weight/strong man area, or potentially a soul cycle room. Right now I feel that room is being under utilized and there is always a struggle to find free weight equipment, while there are plenty of cardio machines available.

This is probably the only way I will get anyone's attention in this facility. I canceled my membership 9/24/21 and have an email to confirm that..To date, they still billing me. I have called several times and every time I am told a manager will call me back but im yet to hear back. Today I called in and spoke to an Erica, who was rude and trying to rush me off the phone. I don't think anyone would be okay being charged for a service they not using for months now. I hope this issue can be resolved and I can get my money back before my next charge date next week. I'm sure they will come on here and say give us a chance to make it right like they have on the other reviews. I believe I've patiently done that. Clearly, this is an issue as other reviews say the same. The facility is good, but chances are you might have a very hard time canceling your membership at retro if you ever need to do so.

I live in California but was in Catonsville for three weeks last August 2021. I called this Retro Fitness in advance and asked about short term memberships and it sounded like a good deal. When I left the area after my trip, I called to cancel my account, and was told ONLY THEN that I could only cancel in person. They did not tell me that when I signed up. So I kept getting charged for months for a gym I could not use, until Christmas when I was back in Catonsville. I tried to cancel in person, and they convinced me to freeze my account. So I did, in case I’m back in the area. Big mistake. Three weeks later my account was still charged, and when I called, I was told they never finalized the freeze. At this point they also told me I could cancel via USPS certified mail, but I was not told that months ago when I wanted to cancel. I find their business practices to be shady if not downright dishonest and it's a shame because the gym isn't bad for what you get. Because they will not let me cancel, my initial rate has jumped up and I’m still paying for a gym that I cannot use because it is 3000 miles from my home. Avoid this business. You may end up paying for this gym for the rest of your life - and maybe even after.
UPDATE: I called ABC Financial as directed on my credit card statement and was connected to someone who did not speak English and kept screaming into the phone. Literally.

I was a member before the pandemic, quit after lockdowns came into effect, and came back after the world opened up a bit again. I like this gym. It has a good selection of free weights and equipment. Maybe it's a little on the small side, but I can always find room somewhere to get my workout in.

Two things keeping me from giving a 5-star review though:

1) they only have two squat racks, so it's often a race to stake your claim on one of them

2) There aren't any straight pull-up bars, so doing chin-ups is basically impossible without snapping your wrists in half

I go at night time only because I don’t want to go when it’s crowded ( COVID-19 ) but even when I go at night time more than half the people working out with weights are not wearing a mask and I have to stop my workout and leave because it makes me uncomfortable. I very much enjoy my Retro membership. I joined a couple of months ago. It was the first time that I ever joined a gym. I've attended three times per week since December. My health, confidence and outlook on life have greatly benefited from working out on a consistent basis. I meet with a personal coach once per week as well. Working with the coach allows me to get the most out of my experience and helps me understand how to use the equipment. You have to put your heart into it. You have to get out of bed and show up at the gym. But it is totally worth it.

I had a good experience as a Retro Fitness member, but it is clear that they intentionally make it difficult to cancel your membership.

There are instructions posted on the website, but the employees follow other procedures that ultimately lead to further delays and more charges.

The fact that it happened repeatedly with different employees makes me think this is an intentional top down process designed to squeeze more money out of people who are trying to cancel their membership.

When you do cancel, I would suggest you immediately let your credit card company know so they can block months of continued recurring charges.

EDIT: The response asking me to reach out is a bit disingenuous. I’ve already reached out many times. In fact, I wrote emails to RF Catonsvillle copied to ABC financial and the Lutherville location, and Catonsville has consistently been the only party not responding.

You better watch out for their shady offers and not disclosing all the facts. They offered me two for one deal on the valentines promotion but kept charging me for 4 month for 2 person until I realized. Management was not helpful at all to resolve my issues. I looked for the manager, she was not available and the person in charge could not make any decision either. So I had to help myself. I called my credit card company to stop the fraudulent charges and they could not stop it either. So I had to close my 8 years old credit card account just to stop those scumbags. On top of that they assigned my account to collection agency and when I disputed against them finally they backed off. It could have resolved very easily and due to the lack of intention to fix the issue from the management team ended them losing a long term customer. I would have stayed with them if I saw a 1% effort.

I withdrew my membership in June 2019 but they still charged me for maintenance fee and so on in the coming months. I have been trying to get my money back but they keep saying they will process it and never did. The manger ‘Tammy’ told me that they have already processed my refund and that it would take from 7-14 days, but it’s been almost a month and I still haven’t received my money. One of the employee named ‘Dlong’ has been trying to help me but still I have not received my money. I do not recommend this place because they are very unprofessional. That promise to call you back regarding your issue but this never do.

Things break. They get fixedThey run out of paper towels and refill them. The pads on machines wear out they replace them. There was a broken mirror and that was replaced. Moral is things go wrong running a gym and the owners and staff take care of everything. I’m always left with feelings of reassurance that this gym will be maintained at a high level. I love retro fitness.

They charge an extra $50 per year on top of your monthly fee. This is not a sign up fee or anything, it's just an extra $50 every August. Also requires huge effort to cancel membership. After having such a nice experience at The Y I was caught off guard by all the hoops to jump through.

Retrofitness Catonsville is a great gym. The staff is friendly, they have a variety of equipment, and the facilities are always clean. I am able to go after work at 6pm or so and never have too long of a wait for a machine. I haven't experienced their group classes but they seem like a good time and the trainers seem friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible. At $20/month, you really can't beat it. I am not a gym rat so there may be drawbacks for more the more devoted customer but for someone looking to sweat and burn calories, it's a great place to go!

Extremely disappointed in the management and ownership of this place.
Seem desperate to hold on to ill-gotten money through arbitrary fees. No sense of organization, was told a different story by each person I spoke with, and they don't accept responsibility for their mistakes.

I'd been a regular member for about a year, even have a friend who teaches there. As a former resident of Main Street though, the Ellicott City flood forced me to move. I called a month ahead of my one year anniversary to ask about cancellation policies. I was told by a staff member that at my one year mark, I would go month-to-month, and if I cancelled after that time I wouldn't be penalized or charged.
I called to cancel by phone, as I had seen a colleague cancel her membership the same way without issue. The staff member informed me that I was fine to do so. I asked if I needed to provide any documentation or sign something via email, and was told no. I even made sure to say "so I won't be charged anything from this point, correct?" and he said "no, you're good."
Turns out I wasn't "good." I was charged not only for four months thereafter, but I was ALSO charged an absurd yearly fee, for which I had never agreed to.
When I spoke to Tammy, a manager, I was told it was on Retro's end and they would right the situation. She even sent me a form with her signature stating that it had been cancelled improperly on their end. I waited 2 weeks to see my refund. Nothing. I called for about a week and felt she was dodging my calls. Finally I got through to her and she gave a different story, that they couldn't refund me since it "wasn't cancelled properly." Excuse you? It was on Retro's part that it wasn't cancelled properly.
She agreed to speak to her owner, who said they would refund me for 3 months of charges, but not the yearly fee because I "hadn't given enough notice." Tammy added that the staff member I had spoken to was "let go" in a staff overhaul. That's not my problem, and I have yet to see my refund.

Don't waste your time or money. There are better, more straight-forward gyms out there who won't prioritize swindling you over treating you like a loyal client. I also hate getting angry with people and even writing reviews, but have never been treated so unfairly.

Management at this location is unresponsive, rude and unorganized. The staff continue to call me asking to join, when I was a member and now that I've cancelled. I've asked them to stop, but they don't take note. Think twice before signing up with them.
They obviously don't know how to comprehend reviews either. I clearly said 'I've asked them to stop, but they don't take note,' and they respond with '...you can always ask to be put on our 'DO NOT CALL' list.' A perfect example of their lack of customer service.

I normally don’t leave any negative reviews for businesses, but this one really needs a wake up call . Used to get smoothies very frequently, since I have cancelled my membership, last year , went in after a 2 hour workout. Ask for a triple berry smoothie with 2 scoops of protein and peanut butter. How hard is that ?? Smoothie and shakes are no brainer. Gentleman behind the counter, didn’t use any gloves , I believe management doesn’t care about hygiene. Second he was ran out of peanut butter jar , but still had a good amount left at the bottom. Barely he used a 1/4 tbspn of peanut butter, I even asked him, you don’t have any spoon you can use to scoop out ? His answer with straight face , no spoon. Ok then didn’t even bother to open or look for a new jar , he just put that in machine and press the button and hand me my shake . I am a chef, do cooking for living , don’t charge a customer $8 for a bunch of ice and flavoring. If it was my employee I could tell you they won’t be working at my restaurant. So freaking lazy.

I have been going to Retro Fitness since last 1.5 years and it has been a great experience. I enjoy taking JP’s and Marvin’s team conditioning class. They both are amazing coach. They guid you, motivate you and push you to do better and better. I wasn’t a very active person 2 years back but then I took personal training session with JP back in 2017, which later motivated me to join team. One of the best feeling of the day for me is seeing on MyZone how much calories I have burned. Lol

After going here for a year I'm thankful that I did but my pursuits have me interesting in other gyms. Low prices and staff are really great. However the selection of strength equipment is abysmal and there is 1 power rack and 1 squat rack. Instead, Retro opted for a nonsensical amount of cardio and treadmills which are made to attract the casual 1-2 visit a month fitness mom. Not my thing. Also if you go here please make sure you squat until at least you're parallel with the floor.

But I'll up my ratings when you fix the sink in the girls locker room, fix the clock...it's been broken for over 3 months, like the sink...I blame this on lazy ownership. Attention to details.
