They have so many classes there's never any place to ACTUALLY workout. And don't get me started on the troupe of obnoxious soccer brats with zero manners that take over every Wednesday evening.

Impossible to cancel. Took us over a month, Adam (the manager) never returned calls and doesn't seem to work much. Rich (membership sales) failed to follow through on our agreed upon cancellation. Two weeks and a dozen unanswered calls/e-mails led to a front desk staff member having to step up and handle it. Don't fall for the "contact corporate" trope, they tout a 48 hour response but after 127 hours I want to cut my arm off too after waiting for anything from them.

Why should cancelling your membership be such a hassle? If I cancel my membership one month, there is no valid reason I need to be charged the next full month when I won't even be using it.

We used to have a family membership but now we are empty nesters with a gym in our building. My daughter, who swims in college, came home during thanksgiving and needed a place to swim to keep in shape for winter championships. They let us use the pool with a temporary membership which was extremely generous. This kind of wonderful customer experience is not something you typically get at most gyms. When we were members, the equipment was top notch, the pool the right temperature and the locker rooms spotless. Rio Sport & Health...Thanks

Walked in & got a warm greeting. I was introduced to Rich who took notice in the fact that I do work out. When he noticed this we went right into the club. Rich shot quick questions & allowed that info to guide the tour. I came in after the script from L.A. Fitness & walked out a member. Awesome personal touch.

Pros:
- Literally all of the staff are super friendly and welcoming.
- Doesn't get too crowded
- Has enough and all of the equipment one would need for any sort of fitness workout

Cons:
- Consistent and complete disregard general for reasonable locker room etiquette and hygiene (I can only speak for the men's locker room). widespread among the male member populace. Instead of using the facility as a shared amenity used for gym-related purposes (changing, showering, etc), members treat it like their own personal home bathrooms. And I'm a former football/lax/track athlete and have a tolerance to seeing some nasty stuff, but this is different. Some of the MINOR examples include:
- People toenail/finger nails and leaving clippings on the floors
- Towels with with visible human bodily fluids left on the benches
- Loudly coughing up mucous and phlegm and spitting it in the showers (why is this a thing??)
- Members that are still wet from a shower or sweaty from a workout sitting on the benches nude
- Loitering excessive periods of time and having loud conversations with acquaintances.
- People bringing a whole bathroom worth of toiletries
- Cell phones blowing up and people holding lengthy and loud phone calls (why are you screaming into your phone)

I'm not even a germaphobe and I've been a member of probably 8 different gyms in the past 12 years. Nothing has compared to this. Come on guys...

I just moved to the area and the folks at this gym were very polite and were able to get me started without any hassle. Rich was very professional and helped me get started with a trainer and I am very happy about my decision. I would definitely recommend, especially with the price being so low AND having towel service.

This is an absolutely fantastic gym and highly recommend it to everyone. The staff is knowledgeable, very friendly and made me feel at home. The equipment is laid out very well and offers a plethora of challenging machines that I hadn't seen before. The facility is very clean and maintained well. You'd be hard pressed to find a better place to build and maintain your body.

LITERALLY THE WORST GYM THERE IS. I WOULD GIVE THEM ZERO STAR IF I COULD. THEIR BUSINESS IS GOING DOWN, THE GYM IS TERRIBLE, THE WORKERS THERE ARE INCOMPETENT AND TODAY THEY TOOK AWAY MY MOM'S MEMBERSHIP BECAUSE THEY HAD AN INTERNAL ISSUE AND BLAME IT ON US. When I called in, the guy I was on the phone with literally told me "so we should collect more money from you for all the times you were here since you got the membership for a cheaper price" when your system and the personnel you hired were at fault. Don't blame your customers when errors were caused internally.

This is not the way to do business. They also do minimal to maintain the gym. I would avoid this gym at all cost. I've been here for years, now I will take my business to LA fitness or the new Lifetime Fitness once they open up. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE WHO GOES TO THIS GYM DO SO AS WELL.

I've been coming to this sport and health for a few months here there and for about a month there hasn't been AC spin stopped coming. Then when they finally "got" AC again I came back but these last couple of days they haven't had AC and now in the kids club where I take my kids! I do not think its right for all members including myself to be paying so much money for a place that doesn't have AC not even for the children. God forbid anyone gets sick or even a a child faints. Someone needs to fix this issue! This is a safety issue. Even a health issue! I'm not to happy with this gym not just because of the AC but there are other things here that need to get fixed but overall the AC is a huge deal!!!

Very convenient location!
The gym is located in one of the best spots in the area.
The facility has 3 levels, and includes aerobics (their zumba classes are the best!), pilates and cycling rooms on the first floor, weight machines on the second floor and cardio and a swimming pool on the third floor. These are the amenities we use the most, but they also have basketball, racquetball and squash courts.
The gym has spacious locker rooms with both sauna and steam room, along with a whirlpool.
If you are looking for a full-service gym, this is the way to go!

I have been a member at Rio Sport & Health for 10 years. I have had nothing but great experiences. The personal trainers are very skilled and always willing to give a hand when needed. I have known the general manager since he was the assistant manager 5 years ago. I couldn't be more excited to have him running the gym. He is professional and keeps the gym looking great including the bathrooms, which is very important. Also a huge plus includes the front desk associates who are always welcoming and friendly! Very convenient location, close to retail. On the plus side, the gym has a large pool, classes, free weights, machines, and cardio equipment. I've been a member since 2006...and I have to say, the level of service hasn't remained the same over the years. Equipment isn't repaired as quickly, amenities have lessened, and the club management seems indifferent. I wish Sport and Health corporate management would invest the time and effort to bring this club back to the greatness it was when I first joined in 2006.

My hotel has a weak excuse for a fitness center. I travel to Gaithersburg a few times a year. I tried the other locl gyms out, but finally found the gym tht felt like my home gym.

I got a great chest and back workout. The local members were awesome and let me work in on the machines as if I was a local member. The staff was very helpful and assisted me with my need for an out of town gym. If I lived here, this would be my only gym.

Old equipment, higher prices (compared to nearby gyms), awful showers, and no place to just stretch, on a mat, I always feel in the way no matter what corner I try to hide in and ohh the best part they will randomly charge you a maintenance fee in December so watch out. I wonder what they use this fee for because everything is still old, dirty and broken.

We are 12/15 year members, and we have seen this club go through many changes. The current changes are not good. The club management is not interested in caring for the equipment, daily I take a piece to the front desk which needs repair or replacement. Unfortunately, I find it back on the floor or unattended if is it a bench or machine, often for weeks if not months without the proper work having been done. The benches need to be recovered and screws holding the machines together are frequently lose. Many of the cable machines have not been tuned up or adjusted in years and as a result often grab or have undue friction in both directions resulting in poor body mechanics. Many of the cardio machines are also in need of attention which does not occur until long after they cease to function. Safety is clearly not a concern for this management staff. The Men's hot tub has been offline since the end of the Summer 2015. The Showers are unclean and Sauma is not maintained. Women's showers are frequently nonfunctional or there is no hot water except the two in the far back. The greeters at the front (Michael in particular) are fantastic. But they cannot make up for the poor management and the gross lack of attention to the care of the facility. Sadly, this once great club has become a feeding ground for thieves and slobs. If you are after a bargain basement atmosphere with young people who can't pick up after themselves, throw around the weights and older members who groom in the common areas and leave other hygiene products on the floor or sink top then the RIO is for you.

Extremely over-crowded classes! If you are signing up for a gym to take the classes, don't go here. It's not an enjoyable experience. Also if you're joining because of the pool, that's also extremely over-crowded. They have classes all the time which take up half the pool. At least one of the spas is always out of order. Oh and this place charges you for TWO MORE MONTHS after you cancel. Come on, this isn't an apartment where you need 60 days notice to find a new tenant, it's a gym. I want my $80 back. That's just unfair.

The place is awful. Saturday there were 5 showers in the women's locker room with no water, one had such a clog you would be standing in dirty water if used. The staff continues to make excuses for everything. They forced the BEST Pilates instructor they had to resign…I'm done. Lake Forest Sport and Health is not that far away and you can easily transfer membership over.

Our family has been members for 3 years now and we always enjoy our time at the gym. Whether it's yoga classes, racquetball, working out on the machines, or working with one of the many helpful personal trainers, it's been a great gym with great service for all of us. Josh Weaver the personal trainer is excellent -- cheerful, encouraging, diligent, hard-working -- and everyone else we've encountered over the past 3 years has been great. I love the spaciousness of the upper level and the lovely view of the lake. Parking has never been a problem (we always park on the upper level), the hours work fine for us, and it's just been an overall great experience for our family.

Good location and amenities. Classes are very good. Staff are friendly for the most part. Afternoon and evenings are crowded, which is not a very big deal except the locker rooms and shower rooms get very dirty. They need to assign more staff to the locker rooms. Some of the members don't have any courtesy or respect for others and don't clean up after themselves.

The theft that occurred at the Rio Sport and Health under the guise of management was incredibly negligent and stupid. With too many managers on duty, and a staff the communicates strangely with one another, it became obvious that everyone there is in there own little world without a care to the proper handling of valuable that are lost then found again by housekeeping or other staff. In this case, it was housekeeping that found an expensive mobile phone with distinguishable markings. My investigation into this matter and a police report by the Montgomery Police leads to theft. Rather than following proper protocol for the securing of a valuable item into a safe in the back office, the housekeeper (name not mentioned) decided to leave it out in an area that was exposed to members and other staff. When he came back, the phone had been taken and to this day, there is no progress on locating the whereabouts of the phone. The negligent act of all those people, and there are many that either saw the phone or had their hands on it, they all did not follow company procedure in securing valuables found. This is disturbing. Everyone passed the buck on to someone else, and no one did the right thing. From management to housekeeping, they all are negligent and should take full blame for the theft of my phone. Crazy to have to end up this way. Just as their was hope, all hope vanished because of the incredibly stupid actions of a few.

Management at Rio is chronic procrastinator. When something breaks they have a lay back attitude. When members complaint the standard response is that it will be fixed soon. Well, I like to ask corporate managers if they believe that "soon" and having to wait weeks for something to be fixed is acceptable? If Rio's management mirrors The Corporate management then Sports&Health has serious problems.

Worse than horrible. Downright larcenous. The play is pretty down and none too clean, but I wanted to play racquetball and they told me I could bring a friend to play with me as long as I was a member. So I tried the one month trial membership. Then they told me I could bring a friend only ONCE. OK, but that's not what they told be before I joined. So I quit after my one month trial membership - only to find out that they had already charged my credit card for three months and I had to fight with them to get my money back.

The classes are always really crowded. You have to get there extremely early just to get a cramped spot in a yoga class. I think Zumba is even worse, even though they sometimes have two zumba classes a day. I also wish they were open later to accommodate the large crowds and those of us who would like to avoid the rush.

This has nothing to do with the gym staff, but if you like to shower and use the sauna or steam room, beware. Wear flip flops and prepare to deal with some people's gross habits. The shower spitters and shower nose blowers bother me the most. Some of the clientele have no regard for others. Some inconsiderate people leave their dirty trash around the locker room, showers and the gym. I see the locker room attendants working pretty hard, but to no avail, the gross factor continues.

In general, the front desk staff isn't as bad as some people claim. They do their job passing out towels and scanning cards...but they don't know much about the classes, so don't bother asking them. They probably don't get paid enough to care that much.

I joined this gym under the impression I was signing a month-to-month membership, which is why I was paying a higher fee (I agreed and understood that).
Of course upon trying to cancel my membership when I was transferred to another state I was informed I was liable for another 6 months.
Ironically there was an early termination offer.
This saved me $30.
As other reviews stated the customer service is horrible.
Also, they do not maintain the facility.
I worked out weekdays utilizing the 6am group classes.
The room that we used NEVER was cleaned - no exaggeration.
Some members brought cleaners for their workout area.
It was gross.
They will mislead you.
Avoid the trap.
Read the other reviews.

not an enjoyable experience, i was a part of this gym for about a year, trainers dont greet customers. the people in the front who work their are always just sitting around talking to each other same with the trainers. What upsets me the most is ive been kicked off certain equipment because only trainers are allowed to use them. When that same exact equipment is left to use for the public both at golds in olney and at lifetime at rockville, not only that the staff that recruits you...DO NOT BRING GUEST THE STAFF WILL HARASS AND EMAIL AND CALL THEM EVERYDAY, staff needs to stop being so thirsty for business. if you do bring a guest make sure that your guest gives them a fake number and email, ive brought in 4 of my friends all of which where harassed on the daily. worst gym ever. bad service, bad overall feel, join another gym not worth it.

I started a weight loss journey at Sport and Health and hired a personal trainer to help me. My trainer Benny Dorsey is helping me change my life. She helps me in the gym of course, but also helps me by sending inspirational text messages throughout the day at random times.

In addition to Benny though I feel that I get the support of all the trainers @ S&H. Ty, the director; Sunni who first got me started; but also KC,Amber, Sarah, Cory and all of the trainers are engaged and encouraging to the progress I'm making.

To date I'm 18# away from my first goal of 100# gone. I'd say "lost" except I know exactly where I left every ounce;@Rio Sport& Health

I have been member of numerous gyms over the past 15 years and I have been working out 5-6/week. I have never been part of a gym that cares less about their patrons' safety and well being. If you are someone who goes to gym regularly to work out, then this gym isn't for you. They always want more people to join at whatever cost. They conduct group exercise classes in the weight room while others are lifting. They don't care about distracting patrons who are lifting weights or breaking their concentration. You have trainers yelling and the trainees doing various movements that should be only done in a group exercise room. This is a place to join if you are a regular gym attendee like myself and get hurt, which I already have. When I did get hurt, they were in a hurry to get me sign off on a statement that their operations or practices have nothing to do with my injury.

On a side note, the men's locker room stinks and they don't enforce patrons to re-stack the wights, thus there are weights all over the floor. Like someone else have said, the management/ trainers never come to to the floor to enforce the safety rules.

If it wasn't for the swimming pool, I'd say it's overpriced. The studios are pretty decent sized. As it stands, everything could be improved. They've been stingy on the towels for the past year (to the point that they hand them out at the front desk and limit a person to 2 towels at a time). The locker rooms have a substantial number of broken lockers and they now only provide a body wash/shampoo combo in the shower stalls (of which there's usually 4 that pretty strange and don't always have enough water pressure in the women's locker room) The swimming pool has a lot of chemicals in it; if you use it, wear a swim cap because it's extremely harsh on your hair. (Lakeforest has only 3 lanes compared to Rio's 8(?) but it has better depth (Rio is only 3.5' deep while Lakeforest goes all the way to 14'...It's a tradeoff on lanes vs depth) Their webpage used to say there's over 100 mini TVs...but the viewing options/channels on them are pretty limited (esp in the cardio area/room downstairs...maybe 1/8 of the machines aren't quite connected/working correctly) Also, the hot tub/dry heat/wet heat rooms in the women's locker room sorta take rotations on which one is broken at a time. Overall, shop around before making a final decision (there's bally's, gold's, fitness first, healthtrax within a 10 mile vicinity)
