I love the Yin Yoga classes at Roots and River Yoga. It is just what my body needs: a chance to slow down, gentle stretching. It is remarkable how easily my mind disengages during these quiet moments. The studio is beautifully decorated in calming colors. The entire experience is a gentle delight for the senses. Thank you for your offering and for your support of the Brunswick community, Machelle!

Machelle is truly one of the most spectacular teachers I have ever come across. I was fortunate enough to "stumble" upon Roots & River while visiting Brunswick last year, and now attend her online classes. She thoughtfully and expertly interweaves concepts from a variety of disciplines, including TCM, cycles of nature and poetry, to deepen each and every practice. The wisdom she shares is heartfelt and rooted in understanding cultivated over decades of practice and teaching. My only complaint is not living there, because I would practice in person every week! Thank you for being in the community and sharing an inclusive space for us all to grow.

I have practiced Vinyasa and Yin Yoga with Machelle Lee for 20 years, at first in studio and later online when she moved to Brunswick because I can’t find anyone to replace what she does. Her practices are at once energizing, calming, and inspiring; they strengthen my body and uplift my spirit. I love the physical, mental, and spiritual engagement she encourages in us and how she follows the seasons according to traditional Chinese medicine. Beyond her deep knowledge of Yoga and her 30 years’ experience of teaching, what shines through is her caring and generous mind and heart. All who practice with her benefit from that.
At 82, and in large part thanks to Machelle, I am still able to do most of the more challenging parts of her Vinyasa, but she also offers easier versions of the postures. During Yin she gives variations for the poses, depending on our preference and body type. She also reads to us from a wide variety of sources including the Radiance Sutras, Rumi, and Mary Oliver’s poems steeped in a profound love of nature. And even though I can connect only virtually, I feel the community she creates for all of us.

We travelled several hours to attend a workshop at this location, brand new for 2025. Although the decor was not yet complete, it was easy to tell that this is a first rate place to learn and practice. The studios are spacious and well equipped with high quality props. Owner Machelle was a wonderful welcoming hostess, and helped us to sort through options in dealing with some scheduling needs. Our teacher Tara, was extremely skilled and knowledgeable. The several restrooms were immaculate and beautifully appointed. Nearby parking was plentiful and free. It appeared there was much to explore nearby and we found excellent food and drink within walking distance. We look forward to returning again in a few months.

I love the Roots & River Yoga studio! I've taken a handful of yin and restorative yoga classes there and the teachers are phenomenal! They care deeply about their students and make sure everyone is engaged and getting what they need out of the class. I always feel more centered and less overwhelmed with life after leaving the studio.

Hello. To whom it May concern, I registered and travelled for the 1pm meditation event today Saturday 7.13.2024 tickets from Eventbrite .. and the event was unexpectedly cancelled without notice. Totally unacceptable to schedule an event for people to register and block their time to attend and then cancel last minute.

Wonderful studio. Great classes and workshops. The owner, Machelle Lee, is a fabulous teacher with extensive knowledge and insights. The studio offers so many styles of yoga that everyone can find the one for them. The Yin Yoga is mine and the slow, meditative style restored my body and mind.

Instruction was clear and easy to follow, with individual help if needed. I was pleasantly surprised how accessible the poses were. In spite of my own personal mobility issues, there was always a pose or a modification that I was able to do.

The instructors are all very nice and welcoming. Machelle is a great instructor and founder. She clearly knows her stuff! The classes are up to 12 people per class. I love that I can use an app to register and pay for all of my classes. I also like that if I need to cancel, I can get a refund if it is 3 or more hours before the class start time. They have plans to move the studio in October across the street to a two-story location to be able to expand this amazing studio. I have only taken a handful of classes thus far but I am excited to continue going but I’m already starting to feel like a part of the community! βœ¨πŸ§˜πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

I was so fortunate to take Machelle Lee’s yoga teacher training. She is one of the very few teachers I have found, after many years of looking, who helps me work with my body, not against it. It has been a joy to take her Yin and Vinyasa Yin classes online nearly every Saturday and Sunday since the pandemic started. Highly recommend.

Roots & River is an inviting, comfortable, and soothing space. Machelle carefully curates a range of classes led by kind and knowledgeable teachers, and there's something for everyone here. From the mind-body connection of flow yoga, to the physical challenge of barre, to calm and thoughtful meditation practice. Music and movement classes just for wee ones, strength classes tailored for elders. And of course Machelle's brilliant specialty of yin yoga which will help any body feel rejuvenated. Roots & River is a gem, a gift, and one of the best things going on in Brunswick MD.

I have been going to yoga and other classes at Roots and River for almost 2years now. It has worked wonders for my joint health, core strength, energy, headaches, and overall strength. My 14 year old daughter or my husband attend with me depending on the class. Daughter prefers faster paced classes and husband prefers slower flow and yin. Additionally, I have gotten to know other regular classmates and the teachers so it is a super comfortable environment. Last, I can't say enough about Machelle, the owner, she is a wonderful instructor and has a wealth of knowledge in this field.

Fantastic classes in a warm and inviting space. These instructors know anatomy well, so all body types and skill levels are welcome. I've taken classes in person while visiting Brunswick, Maryland and have continued from Seattle, joining others across the US taking classes online. Roots and River won't disappoint!

Roots and River is THE BEST! Machelle is one of the most knowledgeable and friendly teachers I've ever met, and has a huge talent for making yoga fun and accessible. I have enjoyed her classes so much. And if you're a person who thinks yoga anatomy is kinda dry and boring, think again... she manages to make it super interesting and much more experiential than your average yoga teacher. I've learned a lot from studying with her and my yoga practice has definitely improved as a result.

I have taken classes from 3 of the instructors. Every class is different in all the best ways. I do not participate in the vinyasa sessions but I have taken the other types, yin, slow flow, stress relief. The instructors are very thoughtful in their sessions. They offer virtual sessions and in studio socially distanced sessions which are what I prefer.

I have never been to a yoga studio that is more welcoming and homey than Roots and River (and I've been to A LOT of studios). The Owner, Machelle, has created an inviting, unpretentious, sacred space and her wealth of knowledge and years of experience shows in her genuine care for her students. Do yourself (and your mind and body) a favor and visit Roots and Rover ASAP! *Pic of me and my Mom at a Mother's Day class

I absolutely love this studio! I always feel supported and taken care of by the instructors, especially the owner Machelle Lee. She is incredibly knowledgable, kind, welcoming, and warm. She also has an amazing, soothing voice that puts you completely at ease. I love how she emphasizes that everyone's bodies are different and gives several options for each pose, depending on your structure and flexibility. The studio itself has wonderful atmosphere and is a place you really want to spend time in. I am constantly recommending this studio to anyone who even mentions yoga. If you are thinking about taking a class, do it! You'll have a wonderful experience and be supporting a local business owned by an awesome woman!

I LOVE this yoga studio! Right on main street, lots of street parking. Machelle, the owner and Vinyasa and Yin Yoga teacher, is AMAZING! She's been teaching for over 20 years, and is a wealth of knowledge and support. She takes care of you when you first start coming, making sure that any needs you have are met and and any injuries or pain are addressed. She sprinkles in traditional philosophy and poetry into the classes, and ties classes to the changing seasons. She's friendly and passionate about helping everyone enjoy every pose. Cannot recommend this studio highly enough. They offer a variety of classes, there is something for everyone!

I have taken yoga at LOTS of places over the last thirty years.....and this is hands-down THE BEST. Machelle is a once-in-a-lifetime teacher, not only teaching yoga but mixing yoga history, Chinese Medicine theory, Mythological Stories, physiology, and yes, even humor into your session. You will not only emerge more flexible and relaxed, but you will have learned a lot too! Her Yin class is absolutely amazing.....and if you have range of motion issues or aren't confident about how your body might respond to yoga, I HIGHLY recommend it. You will sleep like a baby after her Yin class! Machelle and her teachers have also built a real community at this studio.....you feel welcomed and accepted by everyone in the room. Absolutely STELLAR experience EVERY time I go......
