We have known Shihaan Marc for quite a few years. My older son was also a student. My youngest is 8 and is very shy and doesn’t speak up loud. He has been going to Shihaan Marc for a year now. And I can see the difference in his personality. He is a much more confident person. He participated in the Battle of Baltimore recently, and went on stage in front of so many people, introduced himself in a loud clear voice and performed his Kaata. Sensai Marc is amazing with the way that he works with the children. My children learned self defense techniques that they will carry with them for a lifetime. If you are trying to join, but no one is answering the phone, it’s best to just go up to the building and wait for one of the classes to end and speak with Sensai Marc directly. Classes take place in the evening, after school hours. No one is answering because he teaches the classes himself.

My daughter took class there over a year ago for a few months. She was only 5, and I think the commitment at the time was a little much for her, even though she was starting to really come out of her shell. After just three or four months, we had to take a break. She is STILL talking about it and my little wall flower really wants to start going again. Let me start by saying that this has been one of the best investments I have made in my child's future. I have an 8 yr old, only child and like most kids he fell behind during the pandemic. His rusty social skills also began to affect his self-esteem. Shihan Marc, not only helped with both of those issues but then began to instill in him life practices that he applies to everyday use. I continue to see an all-around improvement in his home life, school and social skills. I'm moving out of the area before the new site opens but Shihan Marc has reached out with a recommendation to ensure my son continues on this positive path. That to me is priceless. Our daughter recently took Karate with Shihan Marc and had a wonderful experience. She was new to karate and Marc and his staff were very patient, thorough and extremely knowledgeable and able to help her get comfortable as a new student with the various moves and formations. Taking my son for some free Karate classes was the best decision I have made. We have been there for over a year now and it has been a great experience. My son has made so much progress and has accomplished many goals. Give your son a chance to try Karate because it does have many benefits that will help in the long term our little ones. This is the best dojo I've experienced. My son started here when he was age 4 and is now 8 with plans to make it to black belt. We enrolled our son because he struggled to focus and had trouble controlling his body when he got emotional. He is now a disciplined and happy child thanks to Shihan Marc's incredible training. Ages 4 to seniors are welcome to train here with no experience necessary. There is also space for ages 0-3 to play in a baby room with a diaper changing station in the bathroom. Shihan Marc is kind and an amazing teacher of all ages and experience levels as he is a 7th rank Black Belt. One day, our son mentioned that he wanted to learn karate, take some classes.  That was something that we had also been thinking on signing him on, martial arts or self-defense classes, since he is leaning towards the short side, and can be picked on anywhere. Initially we had thought about jiu-jitsu, a friend had recommended taekwondo, but never had karate it in the top spot, biased idea that karate was only for breaking wood.

After researching, for his age (about to turn 7yrs at that time), distance from our home, and schedules, karate was the best option that could at least start him on the basics. We visited at least 2 additional dojos before signing him. Why we decided to sign our son with Shihan Mark? Several reasons, and not in any order of preference:

Accessibility – location surely makes it easier to get to even that rush hour bracket. We can go through 83 or York Rd heading north, and there is not much traffic since it is heading mainly the opposite direction.

Location – since it is located in a shopping center, there are many parking spots. Very convenient when your schedule seems a little tight. You do not need to fight for spots, walk long distances, or arrive super early.

Schedule Options – there are many options for classes. You can choose the one that better fits your routine. No need to sacrifice another activity that the kid might also love.

Based on that, we decided to give it a try. Before any signing, we were offered a tryout to see if the kid really liked it. We were ready to sign even without try out period since the kid’s enthusiasm was growing more as days passed by. But we took the tryout, just to be sure. It was not a 1 day try. It was a 1 week (class meets twice a week). That pumped up more the kid, plus it also worked to define the group he would be placed at, either Little Ninjas (4-6yrs) or Youth (7-12yrs), since he was about to turn 7 in a few months. His try out was with the Youth group, and he kept up with the group, showing enough maturity to be in the group.

Shihan Mark and Sensei Erin each have their way to teach the kids, based on each kid’s skills and maturity. The classes are fun, but without taking the seriousness out, respectful to everyone, inclusive, safety oriented, and age appropriate.  I have seen classes for other groups (little ninjas) and Shihan Mark and Sensei Erin adjust to their age level.

The best part is that in addition to the karate, they learn other things, reinforce things that we as parents, want our kids to learn: Challenge yourself, positive values, do your best, etc. I have had conversations with kid in the car, on our way to class or home, about what Shihan has taking. Discussed the values that are important to him, help him clarify any definition or concept that he might have not clear, etc. Definitely bonding time and conversation starters to get to know your kid more, in a way that it doesn’t sound like an interrogation session.

My kid likes Japanese stuff (Godzilla’s influence) so been able to count in Japanese and learn some words in Japanese also gets him excited. He really looks forward for the classes. One we arrived late and he was so upset. He will do anything so he doesn’t have to miss a class.

The Dojo itself its very good. It has an area for parents with younger siblings, were they still can watch the classes but the younger siblings can play and the noise will not distract the students. Staff is really great with kids and parents. They will do make up classes (because of snow days), tutorial classes before promotions in case the student needs to clarify something, and will work with you in case life just happens.

I have seen an improvement on my son’s behavior. Not just in class, but also in general. Having a different grown up, that he looks up to, telling him what we as parents told him will make him think a little more. Challenging himself out of that comfort zone, baby steps, but good baby steps.

Not sure if this is the best place? Then go for the tryout or ask for watching a class. It will help you make that final decision.

I researched several Karate schools in the Timonium, and greater Timonium area, for my son to join. I have martial arts training & spent several years learning martial arts during my youth, so I knew the criteria that makes up a good Karate school. My 9 year old son enrolled earlier this year, and I already know that joining Shihan Marc's Academy has been one of the best choices we have made. The atmosphere is serious and professional, yet warm and welcoming. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of taking my grandchildren to Shihan Marc's Karate Academy. In many circumstances of kids activities the parents/grandparents will sometimes drop their child off and run errands during the class time. Not so at Shihan Marcs's Academy. In most cases, the parents stay so they can watch their child participate in the class. I found myself watching, engaged with class participation like I was a student as well.From the recital of the Academy creed, physical fitness training, karate instruction, and above all else the message of "you can do anything if you work hard" spirit permeates the atmosphere.

My two oldest kids have been in class with Shihan Marc and Sensei Erin for about six months, and still count down to their karate days each week. They have very different personalities (one is shy and needed to build confidence; one is assertive and needed to learn discipline; both needed to learn not to reenact teenage mutant ninja turtle scenes in the grocery store) and I have seen each of them thrive at Karate Academy. They have developed better body control, strength, confidence, and discipline, and are growing in their understanding of appropriate and inappropriate ways to use their skills (good = pushups; bad = tackling your siblings). The lessons are challenging, but the atmosphere is supportive. If you want to truly learn REAL karate-Marc's Karate is the place to go. I was hesitant to sign my 6 year old son up for karate because there's so many places around here and I didn't want to take him somewhere that didn't teach him real karate. I was nervous that if he started it at a place that just wanted our money and gave belts away instead of earning them, that my son would lose interest quickly along with not learning any skills or techniques.

A friend referred us to Marc's karate and I was blown away by how beautiful (and clean)the dojo is and how REAL it was. They offered a trial clas for my son which was a private one-on-one so the Sensi could get to know him and his skills. This was to ensure they could cater to his needs in order for him to not only learn but to also succeed. After the trial class we watched a class. Immediately I knew this place was legit and the best place I've seen (and I've checked out a lot of places).

To say my son loves Marcs Karate is an understatement!! Each class has an equal balance of learning technique & skills for the mind and body. They also make it fun for the kids so they stay engaged for the entire 30 min class. They give positive reinforcement (which my son thrives on) while still making sure the kids are earning their stripes and belts. My son has tried just about every sport and this is the first (and only) one that he actually looks forward to going to. And it's twice a week!! He gets great exercise there and learned how to count to 10 in Japanese within a few weeks. The staff is extremely talented and personable. They have an excellent curriculum and understand each kids needs.

Our elder son started Karate here with a friend nearly a year ago. We were sceptical at first because he has a lot of gross motor and social delays. His first class didn't go so well, but his friend encouraged him to come back. Since then, Shihan Marc's Karate School has become like a second home to him. Sensei Erin and Shihan Marc's incredible patience brought him from a five year old who couldn't do a jumping jack and wouldn't look someone in the eye to a skilled six year old who has multiple perfect kick patches and looks everyone in the eye. I first met Shihan Marc when I began training in karate 30 years ago, when Shihan was a 1st degree black belt. We absolutely love Shihan Marc's school. Shihan Marc and Senpei Erin are incredibly patient with the children, especially our rather rambunctious 4 year old. They go above and beyond in everything that they do. The classes are helping our son to be more focused and follow directions the first time we ask. I have been thoroughly impressed with Shihan Marc's Karate Academy and highly recommend their program. Initially, I had concerns about my 6-year-old son taking karate. During his introductory lesson, however, my hesitation turned to enthusiasm as I watched Shihan Marc talk to my son about the importance of working on independence goals like taking responsibility for his own gear, only using his karate for defense, and improving his focus, concentration, flexibility, balance, and sportsmanship. Little did I know that in a matter of just a few weeks my son would go from resisting the transition away from his after school downtime to independently dressing and anticipating his karate lesson. He is fortunate to have progressed from Little Ninja I to Little Ninja II with the help of the warm but firm Senpai Erin. She holds the students to a reasonable behavioral standard for their age while simultaneously making each lesson challenging and fun. Shihan Marc and Sempai Erin are a dream team. My son celebrated his 5th birthday at Shihan Marc's Karate Academy several weeks ago, and the parents and kids who attended are still raving about it. Shihan Marc's Karate Academy is great! Our daughters have been attending for about 2 1/2 years and we've seen a big improvement in their attention and coordination. Shihan Marc and Senpai Erin are great with the kids and during the first year I noted them working in the adult classes too. In both class types they have infinite patience and do a great job of teaching their students the skills necessary to learn the art of Karate. Their style of teaching is one of engaging/encouraging/supporting their students, not just an unfeeling black belt factory that other schools tend to fall into. They are good at teaching to the individual styles and comfort level of their students, while pushing them to do more than the person expects of themselves. They make you better, not just at Karate, but better as a person. There are life lessons mixed in with the style and you develop good friendships as well. The personal aspects are what convinced me to start taking it just under two years ago myself and I love it! I feel stronger physically. My joint aches and pains have gone away for the most part. I've dropped over 15 lbs and gained some muscles I'd forgotten I'd had. At over 40, I'm able to stand on one foot and tie my shoes, perfectly balanced. I never had that kind of balance even 2 years ago and comfortably reaching my foot 2 years ago was barely possible. My wife even takes a few classes as schedules permit and also enjoys it. We and our children value the friends we've made there and the physical and life lessons we've learned. I'd/we'd recommend that anyone considering Karate, getting in shape, or a good social experience with health benefits come in and give it a try!

My name is Sama and my son Aryan goes to Shihan Marc's Karate Academy. He's 9 yrs old and is in Youth 1. I learned Karate for a short while when I was in Middle School in Nepal. I have always regretted not being able to pursue that dream.
I guess my unfulfilled dream was the reason why I always wanted Aryan to learn Karate. He was shy, and we felt like he lacked self-confidence and self-control both, in school and in other activities. It was hard to convince him to start karate as he was not at all interested. But, I didn't give up and started looking for a good Karate school.
We tried almost all karate schools around Cockeysville. I wasn't looking for just a karate instructor. I wanted his Karate teacher to be someone who is good with kids, and who would instill in them valuable life lessons and not just teach them how to throw punches and kicks. After all, karate is all about self-discipline, respect and control over your mind and body.
Our first two months ended up in disappointment. I wasn't looking for a day care center that taught karate as an afterthought. It seemed like some of the places lacked proper equipment, and the classes for most part lacked any structure or discipline. Kids did what they wanted to, which often meant them running around or leaving the class if they couldn't follow something. One day I saw kids climbing on their instructor's back. That was the last straw.
After being disappointed from everywhere, my husband came home with a flyer and we went to see Shihan Marc's Academy. I had no hopes, but as soon as I entered the academy, we met Sempai Erin. She was very friendly, sweet and welcoming. Shihan Marc was equally welcoming and looked exactly like someone I would describe as a karate teacher. We sat down for the first one-on-one session, and after just 5 minutes, I knew this was where we wanted Aryan to learn Karate. I felt like this was where Aryan would learn self-control, become strong in mind and body, be disciplined and also learn to respect others. I saw all that and much more in Shihan Marc and Sempai Erin!!
After that session, we enrolled Aryan and we walked out of there satisfied and happy!! It's been more than a year now and Aryan is in Youth 1 and has his Blue Belt. He's doing great!! He has been to 2 Karate tournaments. He even won first prize in one of the Kanta contests. We are very happy with Shihan Marc, Sempai Erin and their Academy.
Today, I can honestly say, Aryan is stronger, confident, and displays more discipline. This seems to have translated in his school work and in other activities as well. Thank you Shihan Marc and Sempai Erin! We have been fortunate to be able to leave our son under your guidance in your good hands!

Shihan Marc and Senpei Erin are wonderful instructors for all ages -- young and old! My son, now 7 years old, has taken classes at this dojo since he was 4. I have watched him grow in the class from where he could barely stand still for 10 seconds, to now being able to control himself, listen to the instructions, learn increasingly complicated techniques, and have fun all the while. He has made friends, built confidence, and truly found a second home at this dojo. My daughter, now 5, also began taking classes at 4 years old, and asks daily if tonight is "karate night." My daughter Logan, has been with Shihan Marc’s Karate Academy for a little over two years now and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about her progress and the academy for the positive impact it has on her development. When I first came across their ad in the paper I took a chance at exposing my little one to karate without any real expectation of liking it or caring enough to commit however, two years later my expectation is for Logan to follow through until the very end because of all the many positives that have emerged from her time spent there. Beyond the physical activity done in class, Logan is being reminded to exercise strengths like self-control and maintaining a high level of concentration in order to complete a task. She’s being reminded to stay focus and not easily become distracted, she’s being reminded that being corrected is a good thing and the importance of being humble and showing respect. Little things that are usually overlooked are stressed here at the Karate Academy and I am at peace knowing she is in a healthy environment with two wonderful instructors who see her progress as their progress- two wonderful instructors who are dedicated to their work just as much as they are to their students without slighting one over the other. I liked Shihan Marc and his karate school very much because he not only teaches a skill but he truly cares about each student and what is going on in their lives. He takes interest in their school and after school activities. He feels karate is a good way for students to spend extra in order to enhance the students quality of life. My four-year-old twins have loved their karate class from the moment they started. When we took advantage of the introductory deal on the advice of a friend whose son loves the class, I was expecting their participation to be temporary. But we're hooked. I am so happy I found Shihan Marc's Karate Academy for my two boys, ages 8 and 5 1/2. My only regret is that I didn't start my boys sooner because they love it! The classes are very well run, organized, and always on time. The instructors have a strong and sincere interest in each of the students at the school. They are always there to greet your children with a handshake and few kind words before class. They show the children a great amount of respect and celebrate their accomplishments and efforts. Marc and Erin have created a loving and respectful environment for the children to grow and learn.

When I signed my boys up for karate classes at Shihan Marc's it was my goal that my boys would improve their self discipline and focus. I had no idea that the benefits would be much farther reaching than that! I have seen noticeable improvement in their balance, coordination, and flexibility (all skills that will help them in their other sports too). Most importantly I have seen their confidence soar!

I first met Shihan Marc about 20 years ago when my children and I signed up for karate lessons at the local YMCA. My son, at the time was about 8, and my daughter was about 10. My son was shy and lacked self-confidence. Shihan Marc took him under his wing, worked with him, encouraged him, made him feel part of the karate family, and taught him not to give up when things got hard.

An example would be, while at the YMCA, both of my children and I were up for our first promotion. At the time, Shihan Marc was Sempi Marc. He was not the main person in charge of the dojo or made the final decisions on the promotion. As it turned out, my daughter and I passed the test and were promoted, but my son did not pass the test and did not receive the promotion. That was very hard for both my son and I. As his mother, I wanted to protect my son, but I also wanted him to know that you need to work hard in order to achieve your goals. One of the main reasons for enrolling in the program was to build up my son’s self- esteem and watching his sister and mom receive a promotion while he did not could have left a lasting negative effect on him. After the announcement, Sempi Marc took Randy to the side and talked with him. I believe this turned out to be one of the most important life lessons my son had to deal with; one that would help shape how he dealt with life through his teen years and even into adulthood. Even at the tender age of 8, he needed to make a decision as to quit or try harder the next time. I believe Shihan Marc handled this situation in such a way that enabled my son to stay the course, work harder, and receive that well-earned promotion just a few weeks later.

Another example of Shihan Marc’s caring nature was the time when we all went to New York for a tournament. Shihan Marc placed in a competition and received a medal, which in turn he gave to my son. That small gesture meant a lot to my son (and to me). We followed Shihan Marc to his other studios and continued under this study for more than seven years. He always displayed a strong character, while being kind and gentle. He was definitely a great role model.

I often thought about Shihan Marc through the years and the part he played in the lives of both my children and I. He promoted a family atmosphere and instilled discipline and self-confidence. I fondly remember the drills, katas, sparring, tournaments, and training at the ocean. My daughter and I also benefited from our experiences of training under Shihan Marc. We also felt the family atmosphere, the acceptance, patience, and encouragement. It was a true bonding experience.

Recently, I ran into Shihan Marc and I was glad I had the chance to tell him how instrumental he was to my family. Always modest, he seemed surprised. I don’t think he realizes the impact he has on so many people by just being himself and sharing his passion of karate. He taught us more than how to block, punch, and kick. He taught us valuable life’s lessons based on the three underlying values of Seido Juku
karate: love, respect, and obedience. I miss spending time with our “second family,” but I am so thankful that I had the privilege of meeting Shihan Marc and I am proud to say that my children and I were his students.

As a side note, my shy son later returned to Shihan Marc’s dojo to help instruct younger children. His accomplishments through the years included being in leadership positions of his peers in The US Naval Sea Cadets, the MdTA Police Academy, obtaining his Master’s Degree in Public Leadership from Johns Hopkins School of Education, and for his latest adventure, in addition to being a husband and father of a 1 year old, has recently joined the US Army Reserves.

Like many of the participants, I started watching from the sidelines, when we enrolled our daughter, Ava, in the little ninjas program. After about 6 months of watching, I decided I wanted to start training. I took taekwondo when I was 11 for about 2 yrs., so I had some martial arts experience. But this experience so far has proven to be much more rewarding. Shihan Marc really teaches you the basics well, so you have a strong foundation when you progress. When I first started training, I had just went through 5 weeks of physical therapy for my lower back. All of the core strengthening exercises we do have helped my back tremendously. Training twice a week on a consistent basis has also helped me relax, especially after a stressful day at work. It has given me an inner peace, which has helped me be a better father and husband as well.

Last year, we had a birthday party for our 8-yr-old son at this place, simply because it is 5 min walking from our house, and my son was kind of interested in martial arts around that time. My son fell in love with Karate immediately after the party, and joined the school. Since then, it has been a wonderful year for him. My son has more confidence in himself, and interest in growing his physical strength. The Shihan Marc (Shihan means a master in Japanese) has a sense of humor to convey discipline to kids. There are many positives with absolutely no negatives. I thus recommend this place to everyone. I really enjoy Shihan Marc's Karate Academy. Originally my daughter was taking classes and then I joined the adult class shortly afterward, when the class sizes were very small. Currently my daughter no longer practices karate due to desire to do other activities (she is 6 and wants to do everything), however, I still practice and have been practicing for almost 2 years now. Throughout my time I have seen the adult class grow in numbers, which is a testament to the quality of the the school.

For my personal growth, I began to practice karate to keep my body active and to get in better shape. I am accomplishing both those goals and have to thank the karate academy for this. My friend's daughter started with Shihan Marc and Sempai Erin which prompted her dad, Michael, to join the adult class. After a few months Michael invited me and though I stalled for another few months I wound up joining as well. I had exactly zero martial arts experience when I started. Turns out that a year later, I was still having fun and I convinced my friend Antti to join us with the other adults. And now that my 4 year old Isaac is old enough and wants to, he has started in the Little Ninjas program as well. Next week will be two months for him and he has so much fun I don't think he will lose interest any time soon. Sempai Erin is really great with the kids. I always hear about how important 'word of mouth' is, but I'd never seen it extend this far in person before ... usually only one or two people let me know after they make their decision based on my experience. My son's first experience with karate has been with Shihan Marc and Senpai Erin, and he's loving it. He began their Little Ninja's program with Senpai Erin shortly after the school opened, and we really have nothing but good things to say about our time there so far. My son has now moved on to their Little Ninja II program and is even more challenged and excited about the new things he learns in each class. I highly recommend this great school, and it's teachers!

Shihan Marc's Karate Academy is excellent! Both Shihan Marc and Senpai Erin are wonderful people. I just so happened to walk by their location and it caught my attention. It was Marc and Erin that won me over. You could tell they would care about my son and assist me with his growth both physically and mentally. They are definitley invested in the success of each student and they really take the time to get to know everyone. They are creative and know how to create an enjoyable, but disciplined atmosphere. If you are looking to start Karate or switch to a new organization, PICK SHIHAN MARCH'S KARATE ACADEMY. They will WOW you!!!
