About the Club

We are a Personal Training studio that also offers; small group training, large classes, Physical Therapy, Massage Therapy, and Nutritional Consultation.
Our motto is "Train with purpose, move with intention."
We focus primarily on pain reduction, injury mitigation and quality of life improvement. Our trainers work closely with our on site Physical Therapist and Massage Therapist to provide an optimal wellness experience. We also host monthly seminars where we focus on specific modalities of strength training, mobility or Nutrition to better educate our community to live their optimal lives.

I’ve been doing personal training with Coach James since 2018 and it’s been amazing! James truly listens to my goals and customizes each program to fit exactly what I need, whether it’s getting stronger, improving mobility or staying consistent. I have been at Sobo for almost a year, and it has been a life changing experience! I came into my training with long-term knee and wrist issues (and recovering from a broken elbow). My trainer, Sam, listened to my issues and he built a program that revolved around healing and (obviously) strengthening.

I no longer have pain in the areas that caused me daily issues. Sam is an awesome trainer, and I'm the strongest I've ever been in my life. I highly recommend coming to Sobo!

I have been with SoBo S&P for three years this fall. James' personal training is an important part of my life. There is a level of personal attention and customized work outs that one doesn't find at most gyms. I love working out with Sam, i do personal training and his classes. He makes me feel comfortable and confident doing exercises and pushes me enough to get through them. He takes into consideration all my joint issues and set a plan that works for me. I love the overall vibe of the gym. Everyone is so welcoming, friendly and supportive. SOBO is hands down the best gym in the area! I've been working out there since they opened, and after trying other gyms, I can confidently say the community here is unlike any other. I used to feel anxious, and like I didn’t belong, but SOBO has such a supportive environment. The coaches take the time to understand your goals, create a plan, and give you the encouragement to push past them. The entire community is like that—everyone’s there to celebrate your wins, big or small. When you hit a PR, it gets added to the board, and celebrated!

I’ve also attended two amazing special events at SOBO. The first was the Breakthrough - Movement Breathwork & Sound Healing with Coach Glenn and Tong Liu. It was a great combination of movement, breathwork, and reflection. I left feeling both relaxed and energized. The second event was a Women’s Self Defense seminar with Coach Sal and Coach Amanda. I was nervous since it had been years since I’d done self-defense, but they made everything so accessible and easy to understand. I’d absolutely recommend both events if they offer them again!

Beautiful and well-equipped facility staffed with kind, down to earth people! My trainer, Ally Melnick, was so knowledgeable bout the human mechanics and knew how far to push me who has never been in a functional training environment. She is thoughtful with her clients’ progression as she encourages us to keep an online journal (provided by Ally via Google doc) of our workouts.

Overall, great team and I’m really grateful to be introduced into the functional training environment through SOBO. Will return to the gym in a heart beat as soon as I have a more stable schedule!!

I joined SOBO in May after looking for a local gym where I could get 1:1 training. I can't say enough good things about SOBO. The gym itself is really focused on supporting its members without being pushy or making you feel locked into your membership like a traditional gym. The trainers are incredibly friendly and make you feel immediately comfortable (especially if you're like me and knew nothing about lifting or traditional gym equipment when I first joined). I've learned so much about fitness and really feel like there is a focus on safety and making sure form is correct. This has been by far my favorite gym I've ever joined. It's a really nice community to get involved with.

Not to be dramatic but SOBO has literally changed my life! I’ve been lucky enough to work with both James & Ally but the entire team is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, & motivating. What separates SOBO from other gyms I’ve been to is that they focus on being healthy as a whole instead of just gaining muscle/losing weight/etc. They’re all very in tune with their bodies & pay attention to yours, so they’re able to adapt to whatever preexisting conditions you have and work to make even your weakest areas stronger. The training programs are tailored to each individual and the classes are small enough that you’re still getting the attention you need.

FINALLY, a local strength training gym that offers the highest quality of classes taught by certified instructors in the cleanest facility I have ever tried at affordable and accessible prices that can be paid monthly and paused any time without penalty.

I am in medical school in Baltimore and my fiancé is already a pediatric resident. As a student and early career trainee, we don't have a lot of time or money to spare, but we value personal health and fitness as well as evidence-based health. We have looked for the right gym for 5 years -- small class sizes, attentive/accessible instructors, a flexible curriculum to keep you working/growing/learning but also one that let's you take a week or month off without financial or mental recourse, and a fair pricing structure that pays for the training and space without breaking the bank, oh and one without hidden cancellation fees, locked-in rates that you lose if you stop paying, etc., etc. -- it feels like every gym in Baltimore lures you in with a seasonal discount or aggressive social media campaign (or pool access in the summer when you need it most) and then neglects your training, over-books classes at peak hours, discourages consistent growth, and then charges you fees to pause, cancel, or change your plan.

SOBO S&P is a dream come true for South Baltimore. We have been going for almost 2 months, weekly, now and we can't wait to go back. We purchase 4 classes per month with Ally Melnick, PT, SFG1, FRCms and couldn't be happier. Once I get my "Fundamentals of Kettlebells" under my belt, I will look forward to taking "Kettlebell Flows" and more mobility work. You can also purchase more than 4 classes per month for a discount per class, or you can pause/cancel anytime by simply not buying classes for that month. The prices are right, and the choice and freedom is yours!
