I like this place for so many reasons. The stuff are very friendly and the people working out are not bothering others. The equipments are a mix of new and a little used, but got the work done. I enjoy going there whenever I have the time as it is open seven days a week. The membership fee is very attractive. I am happy so far.

The machines are old and there is never anyone at the front desk they are always on the floor working out like they aren't at work. Also the close up whenever they want. I went one night on 8/7/2023 they had people in the gym working out and had it closed and the hours were not updated on Google and they didn't answer their phone. They do whatever they want and don't run the gym like a real legitimate business.

I enjoy Spunk. It's not new but they recently installed several new pieces of equipment. There's an area for pullups using various hand grips, a heavy bag, and a trampoline. They also put in some artificial turf. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to do innovative exercises there! My dance partner and I use the large exercise room frequently. It has mirrors and a speaker. You can also borrow their auxiliary cord to play your own music. As you can see from my picture the exercise room has lots of space for you to stretch out!

This place has definitely gone down hill. Its dirty inside and that parking lot is very unsafe in my opinion. Its a shame because with a little TLC, it could be a nice gym. Last time I left there, i saw a guy sitting in the back seat of his car pleasuring himself. That same guy had just left the gym just 10 minutes before me. That was the deal breaker for me. Cons:
The gym is always dirty. I can’t do a floor work out without have dust, lint, or just garbage in general cling to me.
They constantly run out of paper towels and you can’t find someone to ask for more.
The women’s locker room is disgusting with stall doors missing.
The equipment is either super rusted, loud, or sticky.
Pros:
It’s a cheap membership.
The people who work out are fairly nice.
It is almost always empty so you don’t have to wait to use the equipment.

Spunk fitness gym should be open 24 hours like Planet fitness. All gym equipment should hold or have a water bottle or cup holder. Management should put more emphasis and efforts into maintaining a clean gym especially the men’s and women’s locker room. It should be cleaned and sprayed with air fresheners more often. Planet fitness has better membership pricing as their basic membership is $10 a month compared to $15/monthly at Spunk. Members are strongly considering switching to planet fitness across the street. A much bigger parking lot for gym members at Planet fitness.

I have been their customer for more than 7 years, which of more than 3 years that I have been paying without even using their service, they will make your life harder if you try to cancel the service. I believe Spunk should consider going back to the 24hrs availability open status.
Some equipments are work out and can cause cuts to customers. Specially with this covid-19 pandemic, you don't want those worn out equipments as they can be hard to clean and can carry germs to the next customers.

I have been a long time member with this gym and honestly it’s given me all the tools I needed to lose a lot of weight and gain a lot of muscle. Friendly staff and the new equipments are amazing.

However I haven’t been here since the beginning of corona because I have moved away. I came back after months and I spent my workout upset cause the members here and even the staff are using their masks incorrectly. Not wiping their equipments at all and breathing out their nose by allowing their germs all out in the air. I’m usually not bother by this, but come on, during an epidemic this needs to be corrected. Rob I’m sure you don’t let people get away with this but you’re not here right now. I know of gyms that have closed down due to this and this is a major issue.

I am really almost at the end of it with this gym. I've been a member of this gym for a few years and I regularly work out. For the last 6 months, these folks has a sign up that says no towels, machine is broken and until it's fixed no towels. For 6 months. If you're not going to give towels dont keep a ridiculous sign up that lies to customers, and they wonder why the gym smells. Everyone's sweat is just dripping to the floor constantly.

They also chooses the wrong time to clean the bathrooms. You can't be cleaning the bathroom during busy hours when people needs to shower before going to work. It just blows me.
If this keeps up, I'm taking my membership over to the planet fitness across the street

I was a member for several years. Yes, the gym is cheap, and to a certain degree you get what you pay for. In the end, I was verbally and physically assaulted by a group of thugs at the gym solely because I'm white. I complained to the front desk and nothing happened. I literally did nothing or said anything to these guys (didn't even look at them). They started to shove my bar while I was working out. I let it go the first few times and then I asked them politely to please stop. Their "leader" (a middle aged black guy - the bulk were younger hispanics) then suddenly accused me of being a "Trump Supporter" - ironic, since I didn't vote for the guy, nor was politics ever mentioned; then they surrounded me. I'm a working full time single dad and don't have the time and too much to risk being surrounded by racist animals like this. Join at your own risk.

I have been a member of the gym from the get go, paid for membership before the doors open and waited after a delayed in opening, I also suggest that they accept annual payment in full v monthly, there have been days when the Gym was just closed for whatever reasons but advertised as a 24hrs gym, but the lack of consistency is unacceptable , I like the option of paying for membership 1year at a time at $99.00 v monthly, at $9.99 from my account, why would you change it and now demanding 169.00 a year...... without not notifying us of the changes, you have lost me in the process time two, I will much rather pay more but get value and some consistency, and would drive miles if meed be.
As for the Locke room I don’t use it... so no comment.

This gym has fairly cheap dues, albeit it is no cheaper than the Planet Fitness across the street. But the cheap dues is no excuse for the mess that goes on in this gym. This is probably the dirtiest gym that I have ever been in.

The machines in this gym are dirty and nasty. And the staff makes no attempt to clean the machines as they spend most of your time at the desk talking or playing on their phones. There are signs all around the gym that asked for people to clean the machines after use, but people rarely do this. And the workers do not enforce it. The machines are often so dirty that you can see a film on the handlebars and seats (see the pic). There have also been several times where I touched a machine and end up with a random sticky substance on my hands. I notified a manager of this about a week after I joined the gym, and since then I have seen them playing the machines maybe twice (and I was a member for 5 months). About 1 - 2 weeks after I join the club, I ended up with a rash on my leg that I had to end up taking antibiotics for because my doctor stated that it was a staph infection. And I'm pretty certain I got it from this dirty gym being that it was the only change in my rountine. Plus, these dirty machines are perfect reservoirs and mode of transmission for bacteria, especially with ppl sweating and open pores.

A lot of the machines are old and broken. Most of the ellipticals are missing the cell phone rack to hold yoyr phone. And most of the weight machines are missing the cup holder. Many of the belts make weird noises like they're broken. And a lot of the weight assistance machines have the chair stuck in one position and you can't move it. And when I talk with the staff about the ellipticals making weird noise, I was told that there were no problems to their knowledge.

The gym also has a terribly awful smell. Walking into this gym makes your eyes water. I was told by a female staff that was why they stay at the desk near the door because it smells so bad in the gym. The bad smell in the gym is probably due to the fact that that machines are dirty and the sweat mixed with poor ventilation. During the summer I often feel like I was overheating because the ventilation was so bad and when I spoke with staff about it I was advised that they were having problems with your HVAC system and had had it serviced twice but there were still problems.

And here is the real kicker they closed for 5 days this month for repairs(while still billing their customers). When they reopened it looked like the only did was add a faux hardwood floor near the door and a weird turf like floor in the gym. I could've diy'd this by myself in one day. And when I asked the manager about whether or not they would be reimbursing or giving a credit for the days that they were closed, I was advised by the GM Robert Escariz they would not. He advised me that they gave me "enough notice for you to make other arrangements." What other arrangements could've been made?! There was not enough time to cancel my account before they would have bill for the next month. And because I work out 5 days a week it costs $20 to use the Montgomery County Rec Centers for the same amount of time. So why did I need to pay Montgomery County and you guys for the same service. And when I asked if I could speak with the owner, my request was denied and the GM advised that he already knew already what the owner was going to say. How did he know what the owner was going to say when he didn't know what I was going to say to the owner? He later advised that I can send him an email and he would forward it to th owner. And I'm supposed to belief this?! Yeah right!

I like the gym for the value, it's a pretty unbeatable price. Some of the equipment is a bit old, but still sturdy and useful. My biggest and I mean biggest reason why Funk Fitness, I mean Spunk Fitness does not have 5 stars is that the locker room is funky AF. I mean the locker room is so raunchy and misbehaving with the odor it almost makes me want to cancel my membership and pay more somewhere else. The only reason I could think of as to why it smells so damn bad is because the locker room is carpeted, that's right carpeted. That is a biological nightmare, fungus growth, bacteria and just hard to keep clean and sanitary. I am contemplating calling the health inspector in regard to this issue. I'm sure they will find a problem with the locker room stench. This issue needs to be fixed and Spunk Fitness will get the 5 star from me. If not my rating will keep on dropping till I drop out of this gym.

I may not be the one to judge, not having gone regularly to a commercial gym since the 80s, but Spunk has most of what I need and want, and not much of what I can do without. Spunk is pretty chill. No dress code to speak of beyond what is reasonable and practical. Training and advice is available, but if you know what you are doing, they pretty much get out of the way and let you do it. The staff is as friendly and helpful as they need to be. Machines are in good repair, with the exception of one or two cardio machines which have seen better days. Of course there are plenty of free weights. Clientele are basic unpretentious, working class people who mind their own business. So on the whole, the fundamentals are all there, and the flexible hours (24/7) seal the deal.

Complaints and concerns: The changing facilities could be a little more inviting. I don't know if hygiene is an issue, but I feel like it could be.

Also, security sometimes is a concern in the parking lot, if you are attending during odd hours. Secure your car and valuables, and stay alert.

Also, the name. "Spunk" can mean a spirit of derring do and stick toitiveness, or it can mean something else... (don't google it, trust me). For a gym, either could be appropriate.

I was a member back in 2012 and 2013. Back then they had a friendly helpful staff and fun personal trainers. The facility isn't good or bad, it's exactly what you'd expect for a $10/month gym. Mediocre equipment, mostly cardio, small facility. For the real fitness freaks this place isn't going to work, for people just looking to stay active, especially during the winter, it's a great place to join. The way I always looked at it was it was cheaper than buying a treadmill AND I didn't have to store it. Parking can be difficult during busy times.

The Sauna Bath has been out for 3 weeks and still out of service. When I asked front deskers why it is not working and when it is going to start working, all of them said they don't know. The locker rooms are horrible and dirty. They have plenty of cardio machines but they don't have enough weights. The floor of women locker room was dirty, trash bin full to the rim, toilet tissue on the floor, rusty metal lockers, dark shower rooms and ripped shower curtains. It is a typical old and run down facility.

I signed up this facility because I was told they had dry sauna, but most of time the dry sauna temperature control didn't work and the room had foul smell.

After a few times, I stop going, because I was afraid that I might bring germs back to my apartment.

Cheap. Clients don't wipe down machines, smells bad everywhere and feels dirty. I was going there at night but, it does not seem like a good idea. Police seem to be at the near by bus stop with lights on virtually everytime I left the gym. It's a cheap gym, which is a plus. Decent equipment and a good number of cardio machines. But honestly the clientele that come here aren't the greatest. Large numbers of seemingly unwashed meatheads who don't wipe down equipment after use (due to the greasy residue and horrid stench left behind on most of the equipment) make coming here very unpleasant. The staff here are relatively friendly, but it's not very reassuring when several of the gym staff and trainers are overweight or obese. The locker rooms are fine, but they SERIOUSLY need to start spraying Ozium every day because they EFFING STINK. Again, I don't think the people that come here shower very often.

Above all, however...my biggest complaint is the fact that it's a GYM that doesn't have a WATER FOUNTAIN. I'm not even sure this is legal, and it's incredibly annoying. I refuse to pay for water bottles at a gym that I pay to be a member of. If you forget to BYOW you either flat out waste money, or you say "Well, looks like I can only work out until I become severely thirsty to the point where I have to leave"

Honestly, if they just sprayed the locker rooms and installed a water fountain the rating could at least go up to "Good" since it's still a good value.

Only reason I signed up is because it was cheap ($9/mo) and close, but as soon as I'm able I'll gladly switch to a new gym. This place sucks.
