I am very happy at the Dancel Y. Great facilities, classes, teachers, staff, and other guests. A very welcoming and inclusive vibe. Plus, tons of outreach programs to the community that make my heart sing. :) Thanks for the good work and keep it up!

Did my first workout yesterday. I plan on joining my entire family here because they have weight benches and machines I need, the exercise classes my wife loves, and even a rock wall, swimming pool, and basketball courts for my kids. And free childcare for kids under 10! All around a great family gym filled with activities for all ages!

Joining the Dancel Y in Ellicott City was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I have found a host of opportunities to get healthier by staying active with classes, water fitness and a variety of equipment options. I love the positive and upbeat attitude of the staff members and their support. I also appreciate the opportunity for social interaction with others who participate.

I’ve been coming here for about two years. A year ago, I would’ve rated it 3 stars because the courts were very dusty and hard to play on. Now, they’ve improved a lot, there is much less dust, more open gym time, and space for volleyball and pickleball. The staff is friendly and professional, when I rolled my ankle, the manager handled it very well and I also like how they have this program β€œteen day”, it’s a fun day with activities in the gym, plus many games and snack to have a fun time with some friends or make friends. The gym equipment isn’t the best, but it works. Overall, it’s a welcoming place and worth the price.

I regularly attend Water Fitness instructed by Kelly Whites. She is a fun and engaging instructor. I also find the Dancel Y is well maintained and spacious with good locker rooms and private changing rooms. The employees are nice. There are a lot of amenities. Parking can be crowded and the EV charging spaces are never available, but I manage to find a regular parking spot every time.

(Nelson's Wife) Currently, I am working with a personal trainer at the Dancel Y. She is very patient and willing to help me in my continuing rehab post spinal fusion & knee replacement. I have also used the warm water pool for stretching & strengthening exercises. The water isn't as warm as the pool in the Columbia Athletic facility but still tolerable. I check online to determine how busy the facility is before I make the 25 minute trip. I need a parking spot near the building, so I wish there were more disability parking spots.

I was having a wonderful night out at the gym with my husband and two kids. When we decided to take our kids down to the rock wall. We then encountered a very dismissive and flippant older rock wall employee. I believe his name was Drake so disappointed, ruined the whole night with the kids and hubby. Safe to say we will not be returning, unacceptable, do better YMCA!

If I could give the Y in Ellicott City 0 stars I would. I don’t even belong to the Y personally, but I go with a client because I am a caretaker for someone with autism. Every time I have come here, I have been treated terribly and so has my client. The staff are extremely rude. When I brought it up to staff, one staff claimed β€œ well customers are rude to us a lot more”. Not really my fault or problem, and everyone that works in customer service faces unpleasant customers, get over it. Really disappointed and glad I never got a membership.

The YMCA is a great place to call home.

I like to say life is what you make it.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know the workers there over the years and it is nothing short of amazing.

They CARE. They help. And can be called family. It is a great facility.

It has what you need to get better, and has a good community.

It is a place where older people and younger people can be acquainted and it allows for more than just a gym experience.

Consistently going helps make friends.

It becomes a part of who you are.

It is a diverse group but allows for connections that are shared in common interests and forms relationships with others that MATTER and make the difference between just going to the gym, and being able to have a meaningful impact on your life

I was there for rock climbing for my daughter. It was around 6:45pm and we waited for our turn till 7:26.We went inside and one kid was trying to climb till top from 20mins but still not finished so I asked the black girl staff(climbing instructor)there - excuse me.She rudely said we can not talk and immediately she started talking to her colleague to which I said but you are talking. She gave a bad stare to me.Once the kid was done, I took my daughter as it was her turn and I was standing at good distance but she asked me to back off to which I still did 2 step back but than she said I have to get out of that place else she will not let my daughter climb so I went out.while my daughter was up and climbing the instructor was very rude to her and keep on talking and laughing with her colleague(while looking at me as if making fun of me).Once that was over I went inside to get my daughter but she again asked me to out to which I said but I am mother and I can get my kid.She said you have to out to which I went out again as she was not opening my daughter’s knot. This whole episode broken my heart and I cried a lot.She insulted a mother in front of her little daughter.I feel humiliated.Needless to say my daughter got very quite and sad and we left early. Please careful they may be very rude and insulting.
I must add there are very good staff too who give respect but such incidents must be stopped.

I have been coming here for years now. It is clean, well-maintained, and they upgrade the facilities.

I mainly lift weights here solo and am writing this review as someone who lifts and does not use the other awesome resources of the YMCA. (of which there are many). I can speak best to their weight room.

Their WiFi works. (Very important)

I progressed my squat and deadlift from 135 to 315 here with their Olympic Lifting platforms which are nice enough to do REAL lifting work. Never had an issue.

If you need a good lift, this is an excellent spot, but you may need to come in off-hours to really be able to utilize the entire weight room (it's tight near the dumbbell racks) and there are only 3 Olympic Lift stations currently installed. 6.19.25

Staff is pleasant and make you feel welcomed.

Clientele is respectful of one another.

This is an excellent family-center/gym.

*Only slight issue is sometimes during peak hours you have to fight for a parking spot.

It’s a Saturday night. Y closed at 7pm.
A few people were still in the locker room passed 7pm. The guy worked at the front desk pounding the locker door. He seemed to very angry because we kept him here after 7pm.
He also kept telling guests we closed at 7pm.
It’s very rude.

Went in there a week before a white lady let me in yet this week I go in the black lady at the counter won't let me in on a free trial even just to stretch against the front wall even though i wasnt going tk touvh sny machines tells me I have to go outside in the pouring rain just cause no membership at least cosco let's you in at least 1 time without paying it's always your own people who go against you. She needs an attitude adjustment. Who treats people like that. All I wanted was to stretch before my basketball games since im an official for HYBA at Veterans Elementary School since they refuse to open the school before 6pm games. Wanted me to buy a membership just for 6 weeks.

I come to the Dancel Y when my kids want to come with me. They love the basketball court, the heated pool, rock climbing, all the equipment. Staff is always super friendly and helpful. My only "complaint" is the doors to get to the locker rooms and pool area do not have handicap buttons. Tough to get in with my daughters medical stroller if I dont have anyone with me. Also, when you have to park in the lower lot theres no ramp just a set of steps to go up, we have to pop the curb and go in the street to get to the entrance.

I've been to about seven different YMCAs, and I’d like to share my experience at this location.
First of all, the staff here are super friendly and welcoming. Every time I come in, I genuinely feel like they’re happy to see me, which is always nice. Another big plus is the convenient location β€” it’s easy to get to, which makes it even more appealing.
The weight training room has a good variety of equipment, which I appreciate. However, compared to other Y I've been to, the space here is quite small. On Saturday mornings, it can get pretty crowded, and you might have to wait to use certain machines.
The locker room is also quite small and feels a bit outdated. It definitely seems like it could use a remodel. The lockers themselves are still the old metal ones, and while it’s nice to have a sauna, it feels very old and even has no working lights. Another inconvenience is that the shower booths don't have any dedicated space to place your clothes or change comfortably, which can be a bit frustrating.
That being said, the friendly staff and great location make this Y a valuable part of the community. If they could improve the locker room and expand the weight training area, it would be even better!

Horrifically so overcrowded that all the benefits no longer holds up. Therefore usually no parking during certain times and people would have to park their car in illegal place and other people can’t move their car. The classes are packed like sardines, within 1 foot from one another in all 4 directions. This situation is really unhealthy, unsafe, and unfortunate.

Friendly and welcoming atmosphere. At any moment I was there I felt welcome. Staff is very nice and helpful. Opening times are amazing. To have a pool and a gym in one facility is a big plus. I’m from out of country and was looking for a good gym for my stays every year. The second I walked in I knew that will be it and I did not get disappointed. Regarding membership cost there couldn’t be a better value. Family one is my go to choice. Big thumps up from Austria see you in the summer!!!

I understand that working on New Year’s Eve isn’t ideal, however, the front desk picked up the phone and hung up on me 4 TIMES and only on the 5th time I was able to finally talk to someone. The person who picked up the phone sounded annoyed at me for calling an establishment that is OPEN. What a terrible way to treat people at the end of year.

It’s very annoying as a teenager to buy my own membership. I understand there are rules and protocols to follow but it’s still very aggravating. In the YMCA I was just trying to workout with my friends but I had to renew my membership. So I asked the lady if she could renew my membership. She laughed about how I said renew. She told me that I had to be 18 years old to get my membership. Which I understood you’ll need the parents permission before getting the gym membership. The thing that frustrates me is that I asked if I could call parents so I could just open the gym membership. They wouldn’t allow me and had a fuss about it. So then I had to go all the way home without even working out. I wouldn’t suggest this gym unless you want the family plan. The price is way too high and Roger Carter has better prices. The swimming pool is always crowded as well for the YMCA. The reason I go to this gym is because of my friends. I rarely write reviews but this made me pretty upset.

My recent experiences at the Y Center in Ellicott City have been far from satisfactory. Despite being a paying member, I encountered several issues that significantly marred my visits, particularly concerning the swimming pool facilities.

Firstly, one of the most frustrating aspects was being denied entry to the swimming pool due to purported overcrowding. In reality, the pool did not seem excessively crowded, yet management cited this as a reason for restricting access. Furthermore, despite claims that three lanes would be available, only two were open during my visits. This inconsistency reflects poor planning and management on the part of the facility.

Another concerning observation was the apparent lack of adequate staff, especially lifeguards. The few lifeguards present were not only insufficient in number but also exhibited unprofessional behavior. Their demeanor was often rude, and they seemed indifferent to ensuring a pleasant experience for members. This attitude is unacceptable, particularly in an environment where safety and customer service should be paramount.

Moreover, the decision to partition the swimming pool with vertical dividers further compounded the issues. This setup made swimming challenging and uncomfortable, detracting significantly from the enjoyment and utility of the pool area. It suggests a disregard for the convenience and experience of paying customers.

Overall, my interactions with the Y Center in Ellicott City have left me deeply disappointed. The facility's management appears to prioritize cost-cutting over providing a positive and accommodating experience for members. As a result, I cannot recommend the Y Center in Ellicott City as a suitable place for families or individuals looking for a reliable and enjoyable recreational venue. Potential patrons should be aware of these shortcomings before committing to membership.

In conclusion, the Y Center in Ellicott City has failed to meet basic expectations in terms of service quality, staff professionalism, and facility management. It is my hope that these issues are addressed promptly to improve the overall experience for all patrons.

We had signed up for a free trial. We went in once but my son didn't like the courts. We never got any confirmation emails, membership IDs, or reminders of our membership. About two years later we realized they were still charging us even though we cancelled and never used their facility except that one time. When we asked for a refund and offered to compromise and pay for a few months, instead of showing courtesy the guy said they were running a business for profit and accused us of lying. Not in line with their vision and mission to say the least! Very disappointed.

This is the best membership our family could have this summer. There is something for everything in our family. The kids spend time at stay and play with a well organized kids area and kind staff while I work out. Thanks giving day 2023, this Y closes at 12 pm.

I’m a disabled in my right hip joint due to my congenital Hip issue, which has now developed in acute arthritis on my hip points. Some days I struggle to walk more than 20 minutes.

I came to the Y at 11 am on Thanksgiving Day, did my basic leg strength training exercises, and got into the shower at 11.50 am.

When I was done with the shower and I carefully put on my clothes. I made my way to the entrance to leave the Y at 12.15 pm.

I asked if I could get a sip of water from the water fountain before I could leave. A staff member refused demanding, β€œyou need to leave now. This Y closed at 12”.

I mentioned to her that a person leaving should be able to get a sip of water from the fountain, and all she said was β€œI don’t think so. Not if the Y closed at 12 noon”!

And then the staff member goes onto wish me Happy Thanks giving!!

Wonderful facilities, but both pools are almost always reserved for events/classes from the hours of 4-8 on weekdays. What's the point of having two pools if the average swimmer can't use either?

I can understand the high school swim team being there during that time, but classes geared towards the very young/very elderly should take place in the middle of the day or during the weekendβ€”not exclusively from 4-8, the only time during the week when average working adults can find time to go.

If their schedules made more sense for the average adult working a 9-5 job, I would give them 4/5 or even 5/5 stars.

One thing that could be improved upon is the schedules on the website. Lately, there's been an increasing number of times when the website will say there's no events scheduled only to arrive and both gyms are in use for hours. The paper sign outside the gym I understand is the more accurate schedule, but that doesn't help if you have to physically be there already to see the schedule.

I understand that the schedule is subject to change, but for people that have to drive a decent way to the gym, it's extremely frustrating arriving only to not be able to use the facility you want for hours possibly. If there is a way to keep the online schedule more up to date, or sending out an announcement letting members know a facility will not be available due to change of circumstance, that would be greatly appreciated.

I love the Aqua Zumba classes. But when I can t see the bottom of the pool clearly something is wrong. The pool seriously needs to be cleaned and sanitized. There is dirt around the pool parameter and steps. I wanted to join but the pool at the R. Carter center is cleaner. Their pool is pristine.

My family of 4 now 5 love it here. We have been members for years. My bow 8yr old twin boys learned how to swum here and now come here lost wkly to swim laps. They have great family fun events and free parent night out events. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. The ymca also gives back to the community which we need more of.

The locker rooms are extremely outdated and small. The sauna in the womens locker room has tape covering rough, splintery patches. I signed my son up for a soccer skills class, it didn't not meet the expectation of the class description. It was a free for all with all of the sports equipment. No actual instruction. The gym area is small without enough mirrors. Oh yea, and when they reopened after covid, I mentioned to a lady at the front desk that there was no toilet paper in any of the stalls. She told me it wasn't her job lol. I assumed she would have said she'd let the correct staff member know or simply say thanks for letting us know. So rude. CA is superior.

I have been coming to this YMCA for the past 6months and I was hesitant at first because of the size. After a few visits, I am loving it. The people there are so helpful and the place is cleans. It has a lot of selections when it comes to classes and the people who come there so diverse. For someone who hates the gym, I am completely obsessed with going to the gym and am loving it!

We are so happy with our Y at Dancel in Central Maryland. Where do I begin? Starting from the facility itself---it is clean, modern, spacious and filled with plenty of state of the art equipment. I am never waiting for equipment to open up. Our family also absolutely loves taking advantage of the Stay and Play and all the child centered activities offered by the Y. The Stay and Play is THE reason why we joined. The staff in there is friendly, and they provide kids with plenty of things to do. The Y also offers a lot of different workout classes so anyone is bound to find something they like. The youth sports classes are very affordable, and are well structured. Also, the Parents Night Out event is AMAZING! What an incredibly generous event to offer parents. We take advantage of that once a month!Lastly, the staff at our Y is so friendly and helpful. They truly act like a family, and not a reluctant employee who would rather be anywhere but work. A little bit about us--we are a family of four with two children under the age of 7. At least one person in our family goes to Y daily. We utilize our Y a LOT! We are thankful everyday for having such a useful and important facility so close to us. Thank you to the staff for providing an above and beyond experience for all the members. We appreciate all that you do!

The facility is nice but don't expect management to address any issues realistically because everyone uses the I'm a low level employee & the lady sitting in the office must be too busy to care. Quite frankly this is what happens when it's not run by someone competing. I think it's funded by donations so member fees are just extra income. I emailed the regional manager & no response. I will stay but beware don't come thinking they are fixing anything for "customers".

My family joined Y because there are a lot of programs available for me and my son. Our first experience was the family swimming. There are plenty equipment by the swimming pool and my son uses two floating dumbbells to help him swim. He enjoys the swimming so much that he wants to attend a swimming class.
