RACISM ALERT:
When I left a review I was met with a dismissive and insensitive response calling me a liar. Let’s be clear, this is a cowardly attempt at damage control. I was never warned, never approached, never spoken to, and never informed of a single incident or complaint. Not once. I was a loyal, respectful, and consistent member for months. I spoke to no one inappropriately. I committed no policy violations. I carried myself with discipline and confidence, and that made certain people uncomfortable.
The vague, blanket claim that “multiple complaints” were received is a lazy cop-out meant to avoid accountability. If my actions were truly problematic, where is the record? Where is the due process? Why was I never told directly? Why was I banned in silence without a single opportunity to respond?
This is how racism hides in corporate language. “Uncomfortable” is the shield they use to eject someone they couldn’t control, someone who stood out, shined brighter, and didn’t play weak. It’s coded language, and anyone with experience in these environments knows it.
Let it be known: if you’re a person of color, confident in your skin, physically fit, well-spoken, and self-possessed, you are a threat in this space. And you will be quietly removed when your presence makes the wrong people uncomfortable. That’s what happened to me.
I wouldn’t recommend this gym to anyone who values fairness, integrity, or truth. They’ve shown none of it. They’ll smile to your face and ban you in silence. I hope this post saves at least one person from going through what I did.

If you are a person of color, think twice before joining The St. James Performance Club.
I was a paying member for years with zero warnings, zero incidents, and nothing but positive interactions with staff and other members. Out of nowhere, I received an email saying I was banned for “behavior and comments” that allegedly made people uncomfortable. No details. No evidence. No conversation. Nothing.
I immediately asked management to explain what happened…. not even a single reply.
Meanwhile, the members I actually talked to have been DM’ing me wondering why I disappeared. Nobody ever expressed discomfort, nobody ever complained to me, and I never had a single negative encounter. I didn’t touch anyone, follow anyone, say anything explicit, or break a single gym rule. I showed up, trained hard, and minded my business.
But here’s the part that should concern everyone:
A staff member actually harassed ME months ago in the locker room, literally watched me while I was showering. I reported it and nothing was done about it. That person kept their job. Yet I was banned with no explanation.
The message is loud and clear:
They protect their staff but target men of color without due process or transparency.
To ban a loyal member without warning, without evidence, and without giving them a chance to respond is not only unprofessional, it’s discriminatory.
Their membership agreement talks about “community,” but the way they treat people behind closed doors tells a different story. It’s cowardly, biased, and deeply unfair.
If you are thinking about joining:
Ask them how they handle accusations. Ask them if you can be banned without warning. Ask them how they protect members of color.
Because what happened to me can happen to anyone.

BEWARE RACISM! I walked in with my mother the other day to get her a smoothie and an employee at the cafe who’s name was NOAH proceeded to call her several racist and derogatory terms because English is not her first language. To see this behavior in 2025 is unbelievable. Upon speaking to management they completely dismissed what I had to say and tried to gaslight me. Very sad to see! *updated edit* the management responded to this as if we never spoke to them and they didn’t completely dismiss what I had told them and continue to try to gaslight me with their reply to this post saying I may be “confusing them with another business” this incident took place at 6828 WISCONSIN AVE BETHESDA MD. When asked, the employee told us his name was NOAH with a very smug face. Just so there’s no confusion. Racism is not okay! Allowing racist people to continue working for you is not okay! We must call people out!

Shockingly impossible to cancel membership here. I've been trying to cancel for weeks now. They do not answer the phone and ignore repeated emails. To top it off the staff are surly and rude when you talk to them about it.
Find another gym. This is not the place unless you like being treated like you're working out in a used car dealership.

Review for Erik Assarsson (The St. James Performance Club, Bethesda)
I met with Erik for a one‑to‑one stretching session at the Bethesda Performance Club and left with the rare sense that someone had read my body with care and accuracy. He listened first, moved deliberately, and never mistook intensity for effectiveness. Each mobilization was measured; each assisted stretch honored limits without capitulating to them. The hour was quiet, exact, and restorative.
My medical history is not simple—years of spine trouble, post‑surgical constraints in the neck, lumbar radicular pain, and stubborn tendon issues in the shoulder and elbow, after countless rounds of physical therapy and prior coaching. Erik was the first to integrate all of that coherently. He tested rather than assumed, adjusted rather than insisted, and built a sequence that balanced breath, joint positioning, and gentle neuro‑muscular re‑education. The result was tangible: freer rotation, less guarding, and a steadier, easier gait as I walked out.
Erik holds nationally recognized training credentials—including NASM‑CPT and NASM Stretching and Flexibility Coach—and he wears them not as decoration but as discipline. He is young, yet his judgment feels seasoned: attentive without fuss, professional without pretense. This is not a courtesy note; it is a record of good work. If what you need is stretching delivered with clinical care and human exactness, ask for Erik at The St. James Performance Club in Bethesda.

The equipment is top-tier, the space is always clean, and the location is super convenient. For the price, you get incredible value—everything from the layout to the atmosphere is designed for peak performance. Highly recommend to anyone serious about fitness or just looking for a great place to work out.

I joined the St James when it first opened. I needed a new pool because where I was swimming dropped the team to save money…. The SJ promised to keep the pool at a comfortable 84 - and that is what they’ve done. They’ve had a few challenges with the pool - mechanical problems with the heater and the chemical balance - but each time they’ve worked to resolve it. Whenever I’ve had any questions, I’ve reached out to General Manager David Hoye. David always gets back to me…is always kind and responsive… and always addresses the issue. He’s never seemed annoyed or bothered - which is unusual for a gym manager in my experience! I also want to give a huge shout out to the front desk staff - especially RonKe - who is delightful, helpful, friendly and caring. The front desk team seems interested in the members - commenting on past conversations as people check in. It’s very nice and welcoming. Again… also not typical at most gyms. Finally, I like the mix of the members - during weekdays, people of all ages are there - doing their thing. It’s a nice vibe. My one bit of feedback… they’ve tried to find the right mix of music for the locker room - at least the women’s….but havent quite figured it out. Personally I like the days when they chose a mix of familiar tunes - not stuff that seems like filler. Overall, I am very happy the SJ moved in.

Although I hardly write reviews, my experience thus far at St. James is worthy of one. I've worked in the fitness industry for 10 years and have visited many, many gyms. I joined (for myself, not work related) a few months ago. The gym itself is bright and beautiful. Equipment is new and never too crowded. Hip thrust machine is a also a big plus. They have multiple cable machines, barbells, huge free weight area, multiple group exercise rooms, etc. Also, the staff is friendly, including the sales and management teams (they don't forget you after you join, haha). St. James checks all of my boxes and grateful to live within walking distance.

I recommend trying out a month before committing to a full year contract, no matter how beautiful the place is and how wonderful the salesperson may seem.
For sure, This is one of the best gyms I’ve ever been to. However I paid $169 for just 4 sessions a month, a price that gets me unlimited sessions elsewhere. Initially I had been sold a $95 monthly deal (on discount they said), also cancel anytime which ended up to be a long struggle to cancel once the charge almost doubled and binding me into a 12 month contract.
Anyway, price is very high but makes sense with all the nice looking accommodations they have. Just make sure you know what you’re paying for and what you need. But if you just looking to have daily workout routines with mostly personal time(no coaching or sitting in a spa room/saunas or swimming), then this place might be overpriced for you to keep up in the long run.
It is an amazing place for more athletic people than just regular working out folks. That means you do it all or most of it. Aerobics, yoga, swimming, tanning… I can’t name everything they have, it’s a lot but it’s gotta be paid somehow whether you’re using it or not. I do free workouts/bootcamps, so I stopped membership. I will be using their pool as needed and as a non-member coz I still like the place without a binding contract paying for things I might never use.

I joined The ST Games for few months, but my experience has been far from what I expecting, I kept going with my membership for few months so that they couldn’t
One day I forgot my AirPods in the locker room but when reach out to the management, they denied that they haven’t found the item.
Overall, I expected a lot more The ST Games and won’t be returning. I hope they can improve in these areas for the benefit of future members.

I just joined after being an 8+ year Equinox member in NYC. The D.C. area Equinox locations do not have the same feel, so I decided to give The St. James a try, and it feels like "home."
Note, a big plus is the parking garage, for which they validate, BUT it is a really tight garage, so pack your patience.
The day I joined, I went down in the elevator back to the garage with a woman who was leaving and I asked her how she liked the gym. She said she'd been a member since they opened, but it was getting a bit crowded. I will cross my fingers that I'll be able to get into the classes I want weekly (you have to sign-up for classes on the app).

This performance club has been one of the best I have been part of in all my adult life in terms of the quality and variety of classes and trainers. However, I can't express how frustrated I am about the constant change in schedule and system to book the classes. The schedule system assumes that we all work remotely and we can go to a 8, 930, 10 am class in the middle of the week. It's not set up for working professionals who still have to report to work at 8 am . I switched from orange theory to the St james due to the different classes, however the consistent 630 am schedule I had at OTH allowed me to have consistency to go to class every day. This is not the case here, I am constantly missing days going there and wondering why pay a membership. Here is like the hunger games to get a spot at 6 am or 630 am which switches constantly. I heard some regulars who might not work and can attend classes at crazy scheduled are used to tell the receptionist to sign them up to multiple classes at the time while most of us have to fight to book on the app. Super unfair and upsetting. Thinking about leaving ...

I never leave bad review, but I have to do this in this review. I started my membership a couple of months ago. Even though I live 20mins away, I did enjoy the new facility and my workout exp at the gym. Later in last month, I have more family obligations and decided to cancel my membership (at the end of the day, 40mins round trip is a bit too much). I communicated with the "Member Experience Manager", Sajag, and expressed my situation. This manager replied that I have to "moved outside of a 20 mile radius form the club, doctor's orders to stop working out or with military orders" in order to cancel my membership. Whoever is considering this gym, please be awared that this is a "lifetime" membership ($150/month). You have to keep on this payment until the gym is satistified.

I’ve been going here for a few months and really enjoy it.
Pros:
• this place is as clean as they come
• the pool is very great. Small but never too busy
• the bathrooms are top of the line with blow dryers, q-tips, cotton balls, a swimsuit dryer, several showers with body wash/shampoo/conditioner
• the refrigerated rags are amazing
• all of the equipment is top of the line
• the gym itself is very big and never feels crowded
• the front desk staff are always incredibly nice and professional
Cons:
• the hours are way too short. As a hospital shift worker, it’s a huge bummer they don’t stay open until 10 or 11 every day of the week.
• check in should be easy with a barcode but either the machine isn’t down or the barcode disappears on the app. Really wish they’d fix this recurring issue
• there is a food/drink shop in the gym, but they’re open even fewer hours and are quite pricy. It’s surprising you can’t purchase a water bottle or protein drink directly from the front desk.
• I’ve tried out 2 of the personal trainers. The first cancelled an hour before our appointment. The second just wasn’t a good match. So I can’t say I recommend the trainers here.
Overall, I want to love this gym. I recommend it to anyone who asks. But I would love to see them extend their hours, fix their app, and stock up on a few water bottles.

Great gym as far as available equipment and environment. My workout experience was great with this gym.
I had previous membership cancellation dissatisfaction which has since been addressed and their policy for membership cancellation modified. The manager was kind enough to reach out to me with the issue I had and resolving it, so I am updating my review of the gym to give stars.
I cancelled my membership due to moving away from the area so I didn’t not get a chance to utilise their pool when it opened but I am sure that has been a great addition to all that’s available at this gym.

Best gym ever! It is not only the cleanest gym I've ever been in, but the cleanest place I've ever been in, period. Armando, German, Gilma, Doris and Alex work non-stop keeping the gym absolutely spotless. I've never seen such hard workers and their efforts make a huge impact. I'd like to thank everyone I've been lucky enough to meet during my first few months of membership: Noah & Brian in Vim & Victor, Adin, Sajag, Julie, Eric, Ethan and Aaron David in membership, Cidic, Angeles, Bella and Chloe at the welcome desk and the trainers Evan, Jordan, Janelle, Billal and Stanford . Everyone is always so genuinely kind, helpful and welcoming. There are more friendly faces I have yet to meet (so I apologize for not being able to name everyone who contributes), but everyone works as a team to create the best experience. I tore my ACL on vacation just 6 weeks into my membership and the entire staff has been just extraordinary in helping me get stronger to prepare for surgery, both with workout tips and lots of supportive words to let me know they have my back! I am a regular member of The St. James and I can confidently say that this gym is absolutely fantastic. The gym is always clean and well-maintained, making it a luxurious and comfortable environment to work out in. The equipment is top-notch, and the classes and coaches are great. The staff are friendly, approachable, and always willing to help. Shout outs to Eric who signed me up for my membership and was a pleasure to work with, and Angeles and Sadiq who hold down the front desk and always are incredibly welcoming and professional.
The only minor issues I have noticed are the music played over the loud speakers (basically Lady Gaga, Kesha, and Rihanna on repeat reminiscent of an early 2000s throwback party), which could be easily be improved since The Springfield location has great music. I have also found the spa services to be a bit pricey, but this could easily be solved by offering a free service each month as a membership perk or reducing the overall prices of the services.
Overall, The Saint James is truly exceptional and has exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a first-class fitness experience.

Wonderful addition to the area! They have done a great job with the old WSC space and trust me, it is a lot bigger than what it looks from outside. All the machines are either Hammer Strength, Life Fitness, or Technogym and I am sure they will eventually add more pieces since they still have space available, especially on the upper level. The gym is spacious, super clean, and comfortable. The decor is also great plus they have the Vin and Victor café with lots of good coffee and healthy food options. In addition, there are lots of fresh towels, cleaning wipes for equipment, and even eucalyptus scented cool towels available. The locker room and shower areas are inviting and impeccable every time, stocked with Molton Brown body care products. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating, making sure we have a great experience every time we visit. Finally, they told us the four lane lap pool is supposed to open in March.

Really nice location. It has everything you’d need and want. The equipment is really nice and I particularly liked the downstairs area and treadmills. Locker rooms are beautiful. Staff was friendly and helpful

Great downlighting, workers are very nice, wish I could use the cold plunge tho but I’d rather buy some Tren than use 40$ on it, consider lowering the price for the cold plunge and I bet you would make more money because more people would do it more often. Besides that and my want for a hot tub the gym is amazing. Very clean, they do need some hair spray and deodorant bottles though. Lighting and ambience is great, parking is free for 2 hours and 15 right beneath building.

Basically, the gym went silent when I took my pump cover off (I'm cycling Tren and HGH).
