I was so disappointed in the Level 2 Swim program and instructors. The children didnβt get in the water for the 5-6 weeks of swimming. My son virtually learned nothing and when confronted about what they were suppose to be learning I was given some weird excuse. The Swim Center in Randallstown is so much better (and actually worth the money) as my son has been learning and getting in the water over there and actually SWIMMIMG.

This is a terrific Y. The staff are polite and helpful, the classes are well run, the pool is safe and carefully regulated, and they have free coffee in the mornings. Sometimes the family changing rooms aren't as clean as the could be, but that's to be expected on a busy weekend.

Very small gym with not much for preteens/teens to do. But thats ok, I come for the water fitness class. The pool is pretty cold. Roberta is amazing, very fun and full of energy. When the kids want to go we head to the EC one.

I recently deleted a 4-star review I had left for the Y in Catonsville, and after my most recent experience, I feel a 3-star review is more accurate β specifically due to our experience with the Stay & Play area.
On February 28th, 2025, my 2-year-old son was asked to clean up, and when he refused, he ended up hitting one of the staff members. I want to be clear β I do not condone this behavior, and as a mom, I understand itβs not okay for my child to hit others, just as I wouldnβt want anyone hitting him. I take full responsibility for my sonβs actions and would have gladly worked with the staff to correct the situation.
However, the way the staff handled the situation with me was very disappointing. When they told me what happened, they were extremely rude and unprofessional. I tried to speak with a manager about it, but that conversation felt hopeless β there was no effort to communicate or find common ground. This was especially upsetting because until now, my communication with the staff had always been positive, and we had a good understanding.
Itβs also worth mentioning that my family doesnβt attend the Y every day β there have been months where we havenβt attended at all. Regardless, we have consistently donated to the Y to help support its programs and to continue enjoying our time there.
Overall, Iβm very disappointed with how this situation was handled. I expected more understanding, communication, and professionalism from an organization that promotes community and family values.

UPDATE Jan. 2025 - I hate complaining, but as a gym member, I expect very basic things like clean bathrooms and heat in the winter. This Y has gone completely downhill over the last year. The womenβs changing room has been without heat SINCE THANKSGIVING, in the middle of winter with no space heaters provided. Dirt and mildew all across the floors and lockers, and itβs clear that theyβre not routinely cleaned. The accessible shower is missing half the screws and is not secure; Iβm worried for elderly members or those who have disabilities, as this is totally unsafe. Where are our membership dollars going?!
I was staying here for the water aerobics classes, but am 99% sure Iβm going to cancel it and switch to Merritt Club. Do better Y!
____
A year ago, I became a Y member specifically to utilize the pool. This is now the second time this week alone that the pool has been closed βdue to weather conditionsβ despite the fact that: 1.There was no lighting/thunder at the time, 2. There were no closure announcements/notices on the Y website, swim schedule, or social media, and 3. The pool schedule had no cancellation notices.
Today, July 1, at 3:30 p.m., I arrived to do lap swim (which was on the schedule and not noted as canceled). After I had changed and walked over, the door was locked and the pool was empty. When I went out to ask a staff member about the closure, I saw a sign that said βThe pool is closed due to weather conditions,β despite the fact there had been no lighting/severe weather today. After asking a staff member, I was told there are no lifeguards, so the pool is closed for the rest of the day.
I understand that the Y is experiencing staffing shortages. I would 100% understand if the Y has to enact limited swim hours due to a lack of available lifeguards. However, I believe the Y should better communicate these closures by keeping their website up to date on cancellations or hour changes. Y memberships can be pricy, and for the amount Iβm paying solely to use the pool, I wish closures were better communicated.
Iβm very appreciative of the Y and its staff but also want to communicate this issue as I am not the only member impacted by this.

So disappointed with this gym. I really hoped with the recent updates that we would be getting some nice equipment like the YMCA in Ellicott City. While they did add two new squat racks and like 5 leg and ab machines, the trade off was to get rid of two of the only decent (albeit older) upper body machines.
For ~$45 a month, itβs kind of absurd that we now have a single chest press machine and one row machine, both of which are on par with a hotel gym.
On top of that, seemingly none of the cardio equipment got updates as a number of treadmills are still out of order.
Iβm just confused and beyond fed up truthfully. There is literally no reason to continue paying this ridiculously high membership fee compared to other gyms in the area.

Pretty terrible communication, the pool is unreliable at best- often closed or schedule changed without clear notice. Weβve had lots of swim classes cancelled. The facilities are minimal but functional. All in all, a poorly managed unappealing place to be a member of. Iβve been to many YMCAβs, all over the country, and none has been anything near this bad.

Management here is unbelievably disappointing. They are cutting costs by intentionally understaffing critical areas such as lifeguarding. The adult early morning swim masters program was pushed back because management refused to pay a lifeguard for the extra hour required. Masters swimmers are now forced to share a smaller number of lanes much later in the morning, and they are threatening to remove even more lanes. My wife and I paid our membership all through COVID as a gesture of goodwill, and this is how we are repaid? They are chronically understaffed, not just at the pool, cancel classes at random, and treat members like numbers. Not what you expect from a neighborhood Y.

The gym itself is on the smaller end, however the staff makes up for the size of the facility. Lannette is one of the most welcoming staff members and will bring a smile to your face, and Dela has the sweetest smile if you can get her to smile :). They also have great trainers in Donica, James, Trevor, Rob and Serenity. I can't say enough about the staff. The folks who workout at this facility are also very pleasant and welcoming. I would totally recommend this gym if you're just considering working out or if you want to bring the whole family in for events and functions. Mary Grace also runs a wonderful leaders club on Tuesday evenings for teenagers to get involved and volunteer.

We really love using the y for our family. However recently the stay and play is so understaffed that you cannot plan to go workout. During the past three weeks they seem to always be missing a person. Most of us don't have time to wait up to 1.5 hours with restless kids to do a workout.
No refund of membership money for parents when stay and play is unavailable and parents cannot use the gym. No notice that childcare will be limited or opportunity to reserve a spot.
Please prioritize hiring enough reliable staff to fulfill the memberships you have sold.

Too many glitches in scheduling activities for members- Recent error:: Scheduled Signup spots opening for activities for January 2024 is to start on 1/08/2024 at 7am for swimming & others but when I went on website to schedule a swimming class, spots for January 2024 swiming for level 3/4 were already filled and states β FULLβ for Catonsville/ Ellicott city Centers. When talked to Supervisor for this issue he said itβs Corporate issue and its done from their end and he cant do anything about it. This is happening too much specially in Catonsville center- last year pool cleaning was abruptly started and swimming lessons were credit back. Now I hv to take swim lesson in March due to lack of Discipline from Corporate and no work is done on it.
Otherwise Center is too Clean and very friendly- cheers for that.

Nice and clean entry area. I visited the pool area today with my 3 kids for family swim. Pool area is very nice. It only has 2 family showers but luckily is was not busy today so we were able to get one without a wait. The shower floors could be cleaned as there was hair in a lot of places and it was only 11am. The lifeguards were nice and seemed aware of all the kids in the facility. The kids loved the pool area. They also had 4 lap lanes in addition to eh 2 family lanes.

Today, as me and my 4 years old daughter came out of family pool time we headed up to the playroom for 5 minutes. I was standing there. Just the time to wait for my husband to pick us up. The lady working at the desk was literally looking towards my daughter and complaining to the other workers that they will have to clean up the mess. My daughter was playing with the costumes for a couple minutes. At the end she asked her to clean up or that I should clean up?!? 3 costumes?!? Why? How does that work when they have 5 or 6 or 7 kids there playing with everything age 1 and 2 while their parents are working out?! Does she makes them clean the whole playroom before going to their parents? She is unkind and limit abusive the way she complain about kids playing there. Is she serious? I thought it was a joke at first. I will not be coming back to the y of Catonsville. Change your staff.

Overall I Love this Y. I like the culture of how they greet everyone . Itβs a friendly environment and clean . However ...lacking in size in comparison to surrounding Ys Though there may not be room for more expansion but this Y needs a serious make over of itβs dated and old pool.
Howard County Multiple Pools Clean.
And a Sauna
Pasadenaβs out door pools are enormous .. It never smells like chlorine
The womenβs locker room is like a spa
What is upsetting to me is the dated and old pool environment at the Catonsville Y
Itβs chlorine level is so high the ventilation not comfortable
It seems totally unhealthy. .
Catonsville is a swimming town with multiple private swim clubs and devoted swimmers. our Y is not a strong reflection of that.
At the very least ....Please open the doors and get some windows put in .

I've had a wonderful first few weeks as a Y member. This is the first time I've joined a Y as a family. My kids have really enjoyed the free climb nights, family swim and they also loved Fit & Fun, with Austin as their leader. I'm really enjoying BodyPump in the early mornings with Deb because this is the only time I can get to the gym by myself. The staff at the front desk, especially Arnette, are wonderful. The cozy fire was so nice to sit next to during Open Climb the other night. I just wanted to stay a while, it was so welcoming. I even took a Family activity take-home activity for my boys and they had fun doing it at home. I appreciate the family bathrooms so much having opposite-gendered young children (age 7-8), it just takes all the stress out of wondering if they are going to get the shower to work/not make it too hot, get dressed timely, goof around, etc. in the boys locker room by themselves. I've already started the process of taking advantage of FitQuest and I'm happy to say that the Y environment and staff have motivated me to build my health and wellness routine. I've never gone to a gym regularly before so this is huge for me.

The management is very lacking. When an issue arises and you notify they do not address the issue. The pool manager plays favorites. notified them several times and they did nothing. when bullied by another member they allowed the bully to continue. When the all adult room kept getting children they did nothing. Several of the life guards make their own rules. Reported to corporate. It was ignored. No apologies at all. no action taken. I had to quit because they would not do anything to change. Told me to come in at different hours. I work full time.. Several others told me they had the same experience and go to Towson. I cant do that. They need to reorganize and send letters to us that had to deal with this, tell us the changes and invite us back. apparently they just don't care. NOT FRIENDLY

Fantastic Team. Fletcher in the swimming department and Seth at the front were super friendly. I'm in from out of town (AZ) and they were both very outgoing and welcoming!

Unprofessional handling of the mask policy and a clear abuse of power. Terminated the membership of a close friend on grounds that were not logical and purely emotional.
He was violently threatened by another member and absolutely nothing was done. It was clear that he was being treated differently and unfairly due to political differences. I watched it first hand.
He complied when confronted about his mask slippage while running at max capacity on the treadmill. This was not enough.
I have watched him be obedient throughout this endeavor. In November he got a two week ban and was determined to not have any more issues, and he didn't. They have been compiling a list of "incident reports" on him so that they could terminate him. His membership was terminated although he leaves in a month for the Navy. He now has no place to swim in order to train to serve.

Iβm impressed with this Y And when we join weβre always members. I remember this used to be western family back in the 1990s. I remember Mariet Hamlet (then Mariet McCrumb) who was a big part of this. YOU ARE A LEGEND TO THIS Y MARIET!!
