Best yoga teachers in DC! Iyengar yoga teachers have trained for many years to be certified and all of the teachers I've had at Unity Woods are excellent.

I've been practicing yoga for 40 years, the past 22 years at Unity Woods, and it is truly the gold standard in yoga instruction. Iyengar yoga is an alignment based yoga and nothing like gym yoga which in my experience can be harmful particularly for those with special health considerations or simple aging. This is the best yoga studio in the DC area!

Unity Woods teachers are highly trained Yoga professionals and they accommodate the pace and level of each student. Over time, students develop their own unique practice, making Yoga truly beneficial and lots of fun. The students are also very good company. We enjoy learning together.

Unity Woods is an excellent yoga studio. The teachers are skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable; they all have different personalities and teaching styles so there's a very good chance you'll find a teacher who's just right for you. Mary is my current favorite. I drive from Columbia to Bethesda to take her class once a week.

When I first started studying at Unity Woods - my only prior teachers were at the gym. I soon realized that my "teachers" were all students of John. That is still the case - the best teachers at other studios study with John. I was inflexible and struggled through his beginner's class – and eventually graduated to level two, then two-three, and only after five years did I start the more advanced class. John's method takes time, and a degree of relaxing to go further, but somehow, awareness comes. Poses that I never thought possible – suddenly arrive.

It’s impossible to compare John to any other teacher in the area. As a yogi, he’s 40 years in the making. John's impact on our yoga practice is truly remarkable. Unity Woods is a vibrant yoga studio, with a presence in DC, MD and VA. John travels constantly, teaches at national conferences, assesses and trains teachers, conducts advanced workshops and he still finds time to devote to his own practice. In the entire US there are a handful of teachers who have his qualifications or have studied as closely with BKS Iyengar.

John's sequences layer on top of one another over the course of three months – there is a progression – it’s all extremely well thought-out. He knows the asanas inside and out – top to bottom. His instructions drive you from old habits and bring you through your fear. The best part– is that John will have you standing on your head in no time – and what a difference it makes to see the world from upside down.

Here’s what I’ve gotten from years of study at Unity Woods: a strong, flexible, and lean body, better focus and concentration, and greater cheerfulness and resilience. I’ve learned how to practice effectively on my own, so yoga is always available to me in between my excellent classes and when I travel. The community is wonderful – pleasant, warm and respectful of each practitioner.

BKS Iyengar says β€œYoga is one” and there are lots of great yoga teachers out there. Unity Woods is remarkable for having the highest standards for its teachers and a method that helps each student to experience all the benefits of yoga. Classes move faster and are more demanding at higher levels, but don’t miss the groundwork of level 1. Even experienced yogis and athletes can benefit from that solid foundation.

I began practicing yoga at Unity Woods 2 years ago. I took up yoga because I really needed something to supplement my running. I run 5 or 6 times per week up to 60 miles in total and staying flexible and building core strength is really important for me. Unity Woods is a first class yoga studio with very professional teachers. Their style of yoga, developed by B.K.S Iyengar, is great for staying flexible, fit and strong. The studio in Bethesda is awesome too, they provide everything you need in the class and it is the least 'commercialized' studio I have been to. The focus is on providing quality teaching and not on making a buck. I think everyone would benefit from yoga and Unity Woods is definitely where I would go to get started.
