After suffering some health issues about three years ago , I signed up for training with Jay at the Beacon Hill Athletic Club in the North End of Boston. I now realize that I should have done this years earlier. The club has great equipment, and Jay is a wonderful trainor/mentor. I strongly recommend him and the club to anyone wanting to focus on their physical conditioning and mental well being.

My husband and I have been members for about three years, and it’s been a great experience! The gym is always clean and we’ve never had trouble getting a good workout in. Jay and the rest of the team are always so helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!

When I became a member at the BHAC in the north end, I thought I was just joining a gym. The sense of community here is unmatched. Everyone - from the trainers, front desk staff, to the members - is a welcoming, supportive, and geninely invested in each other's progress. It's kind of place that makes you actually look forward to coming to the gym.

Yonas drives this gym.
He is the man that wakes up the neighborhood and generates the morning energy. The gym is perfect for those of us who just want a "gym". Nothing fancy, just old fashioned gym rats. Very affordable, convenient and friendly. The equipment is basic and could use some upgrades, but overall 5 stars. Try it out

This is a wonderful health club because of the friendly staff and members. I have enjoyed every moment that I have spent there since I began going regularly (at least three mornings a week) five or six years ago. You should join Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs if you live near any of their several branches. You will enjoy and benefit from it physically and emotionally, and the price is very reasonable to boot!
I want to update my review by adding that I have now been training three days per week for about 14 years at the North End location with the gym manager, Jay Priestley, and have benefited greatly from that training. I also work out at that gym often on my own and find it a most enjoyable place to exercise, with good equipment and very friendly staff and fellow members. You should join.

Convenient location right in the North End neighborhood with various machines and space to get a good workout in. Several items like hand weights and mats could be replaced and are breaking and/or dirty, as well as the cleanliness of the bathroom could improve.

I recently started training at Beacon Hill Athletic. It’s a good no-frills (no towel service no classes) gym with all the cardio and weight equipment you need to get in a good workout. Very low key and convenient.

The gym has a lot of potential — great location, respectful and focused community, and a welcoming vibe overall. Unfortunately, the cleanliness and maintenance fall far short of expectations.

There’s visible dust under benches, in corners, and around equipment. Members already do their part by wiping down machines — the gym just needs to take care of the surrounding environment. Floors, walls, mirrors — these clearly aren’t receiving regular attention.

In the women’s locker room, the sauna has been out of service for a long time with no sign of repair, and only one of the toilet stalls locks properly. The entire area feels worn and poorly maintained. Yes, the building is old — but that doesn’t excuse the dust, cobwebs, and neglected fixtures.

On rainy days, several machines become unusable because water drips directly from the ceiling onto the equipment and surrounding floor. It’s uncomfortable — sometimes even unsafe — to sit on surfaces that are wet, slimy, or slick. The only “solution” offered seems to be placing a bucket underneath the leak, with no sign of any real effort to fix the issue.

This gym is one of the most expensive options in the neighborhood, which is why I chose it — I was looking for an experience that felt enjoyable. It’s disappointing to pay more and still find the most basic standards being overlooked.

I had been going to this gym for almost 3 years. There are definitely concerns about the cleanliness as others have mentioned and the space is a little tight, but they have most of the equipment you would typically look for in a gym. HOWEVER, the disrespect I was shown from the manager over my last month is inexcusable. I moved out of the North End and, as such, canceled my membership in March. They tell you upfront that you have to pay for an extra month’s membership after you cancel, but that you can still use the gym during that month. There is also an annual fee that they apparently charge in April. I was charged the monthly fee, as expected, AND the annual fee for the upcoming year staring in April, which does not make sense considering I canceled my membership in March and will not even be a member of the gym for the upcoming year. I can’t tell you if it is explicitly stated in the contract that you are responsible for an annual fee in April if you cancel in March because the manager actively avoided communicating with me for a month. I came in 5 times trying to speak to a manager as I’ve been told he is the only person who could do anything about the charge. 4 times I came in and talked to the staff, who said every time that the manager is unavailable. I left my name and number each time and asked for a call back from the manager to talk through the charges. I never received a call back. Finally, I came in for a 5th time and was told by one of the staff (because the manager was AGAIN not there) that the manager informed him, NOT ME, that I would not be refunded. So, it has been confirmed that he was actively avoiding talking to me about this situation and doesn’t even have the decency to talk to me about it over the phone. This lack of professionalism is baffling, and I may have previously said that you can overlook the negatives of this gym due to the convenience, but now, with their extremely high and continually increasing rates, in addition to the complete lack of respect and what should be common decency from the manager, I would highly recommend looking at other options before committing to this gym.

Friendly staff and reliable gym! Women’s sauna has not been working for over a year and doesn’t seem like it is going to be fixed any time soon. Which is fine, but sauna is definitely not an amenity that you are paying for.

Started WO here this month to cross train for marathoning & PT for injuries.
Great facilities upstairs for PT and MA. Main gym has everything you could need from free weights, indoor cardio, smith machine etc… it’s a place for those looking to get the work done. Absolutely in my interest, no frills but amenities are available and the staff are very friendly!

I have just joined. Jay seems very engaging. Other assistants have been nice. The place is clean. I just hired Matt to be my physical trainer and will work out soon. I have always gotten a treadmill. One big negative is the tvs don’t work on the treadmills. I understand it’s been this way for six months. I met another member who has asked multiple times to get this fixed. What is the update? The price is a bit higher than I would like, but honestly I haven’t been to a gym that’s more welcoming than this one. The equipment might not be the most up to date but it has everything you need. I also like that It’s generally not crowded when I go and there isn’t a bunch of fitness influencers taking mirror photos of themselves!

Clean, convenient location, and great staff. But as small and crowded as a tuna can. Probably not an issue if you work anything other than usual 9-5 working hours. Which most of us do. Price is not very reasonable in my opinion, but it's pretty much the only gym in the North End.

Good facility with fairly new equipment. Somewhat small but has all the necessary equipment. The staff is always a delight and probably the best part about the gym, other than the location. Great, no frills neighborhood gym. Staff and fellow clientele are friendly. Everyone, from my observation, is there to work out, not take selfies pretending to. ;) I joined about 1.5 yrs ago and have been working out with Jay for a little over a year. Before I joined, it'd been at least 10 yrs since I used weight training as my go to exercise regime. Instead of feeling intimidated, I felt welcome. Jay is a great, knowledgeable personal trainer. I've had a few serious injuries in the past, so I was worried about getting hurt as I reintroduced strength training. Jay is a hawk when it comes to correct technique and modifies if something doesn't quite feel right. Sure there are occasional busy mornings, but hey the more then merrier when it comes to healthy habits and exercise. I highly recommend BHAC North End Waterfront location!

I switched about two months ago from Equinox to Beacon Hill Athletic Clubs. The two are really like comparing apples and oranges, so take this with a grain of salt. While I enjoyed my experience at Equinox, I found I wasn't using the amenities or classes I was paying for. It was also incredibly crowded. After switching to BHAC, I'm much happier with the price I'm paying, how conveniently located it is, and the longer hours. This gym has everything I need (squat rack, free weights, and a few machines) to get in a great workout.

I have been a member of the club since i first moved into the area about 6 years ago. The gym has everything you need in order to get a good workout in, and is continuously improving its equipment. All new machines with 3 squat racks. Ive never had an issue finding a treadmill or a bike. My brother and I were able to do all of our off season football lifts here and it is rarely crowded at all during the day. There is also a real sense of community throughout the members and the staff, everybody is very friendly and you see a lot of familiar faces. Locker rooms are nice as well, with a working sauna and 4 showers. Overall the gym has everything you could need to stay in shape and all for a reasonable price.

Friendly staff, clean facility, lacking and strange equipment. 2 squat racks, hex plates, no platform. Rules against chalk posted. The real issue I have is 100% of their barbells seem to have been filed down to triangles from the normal round. Maybe they were bought second hand or this was a weird choice by the management. It made it very difficult to squat and my shoulders hurt afterwords because of the weird pressure doing low bar. Fine gym to get a run in at but I'll find another spot that's more strength training friendly next time I'm in town.

This is, as others have said, a great neighborhood gym with a clientele of all ages. And like the neighborhood in which it sits, it has a warm and friendly character - there is a "Cheers" quality to it, where everyone knows your name. The welcoming tone is set by Jay, the manager and trainer extraordinaire, Alex (also a talented trainer) and Maureen. Before I joined the club, I would never have believed that I would actually look forward to working out. Did I say it is well-equipped? Adding that important fact at the end of this review is reflective of how much else the place has going for it.

Here in Boston for a business trip and always try to find the good gyms wherever I go. This is a great one with very friendly staff! I was greeted very friendly and was also offered a free workout! Awesome!

The gym is rather small and down in a basement. It has a style of the older era gym which I prefer. Very good equipment and good locker rooms. The cardio equipment is also good with some variety.

The only thing I can complain about is that it is somewhat limited of what equipment is there and that the dumbbells only goes up to 100 pounds. But still enough to throw in a great workout and I will be back tomorrow again, and whenever in Boston I'll be back!

I strongly recommend this gym to anyone who wants to get a good workout with good ol' equipment in a nice cool location! Just don't expect to throw in a strongman workout as the weights are a bit limited, which is also why I reduce one star rating. I'd raise it to 5 if they would add at least 120 pound dumbbells 💪

I love this place! Started going a while back and now I go every week. They have a great staff that will assist you if you need the help. The place is clean and the equipment looks in good condition. Yoga class is great as well. Instructor helps you with your technique and breathing. They have combat training (muy Thai BJJ boxing) classes that are the best! The instructors help you a lot! They don't just give you a work out they teach you the proper techniques. I went to other gyms and didn't like that the only work you out and not teach you the proper way to punch or kick. I recommend this gym to everybody!
