The staff is friendly and it's very convenient for me to get too. The reason I go here is because it has a parking lot, so I don't have to find a meter spot like the other gym nearby. It sucks a lot when you have to find a parking spot in the winter. I also like that the gym isn't super busy, so I can get to the equipment without much wait. It also helps that the clientele is older (40s), so most people are respectful.
The equipment is old and they do breakdown more often than you want. The sauna and hot water has issues from time to time as well.
There are a number of instructor led classes (yoga, spin), but I do not take advantage of them.

I have been a member at Beacon Hill Athletic in West Newton for about 14 years; the staff is great, it opens early, it's clean, has lots of different equipment and the price is reasonable. I know it offers a lot of classes which I have never done but I know many people who do and like them. The crowd in the early morning has, for the most part been coming for many years - that says something!

I was excited to visit this location because according to their website "The club recently underwent a significant remodel and now boasts the newest of the new in terms of cardiovascular training equipment along with a slew of strength and free weight apparatus". Nope. Dated equipment and many of the machines I tried has some part of them that was broken. Would not be a complete deal breaker if they charged reasonable rates, but at their current rates, definitely not worth it.

The only good thing about it is that it's usually pretty empty, but I'm starting to realize why. First of all, the equipment is old and raggedy. They so only have hex plates, so you can't really do deadlifts or any exercise that involves the bar hitting the floor. Then today, Saturday, at 4 pm, I went to go lift, and the gym was closed! At 4 pm on a Saturday! Their posted Saturday hours are 7-7, so they should have been open.

I'm glad I only got the single month membership to try it out, rather than committing to a full year. I definitely won't be renewing my membership.
