Big Work Training Studio is a 1 on 1 oriented Personal Training studio. Clients can choose from a variety of in person and online training options to fit any need or budget. Located in the heart of the Maynard business district, Big Work Training Studio is designed for people in the general population looking to reach their fitness goals, for people who struggle with exercising consistently, or for those who have been in the monotony of the same fitness routine for years and are looking for a change of pace or to take things to the next level. Owned and operated by Max Billings - Gordon (CSCS, 11 years training experience), each client's program is created based on their individual needs and tailored to their individual fitness goals.

Every individual that Max works with, probably has a different experience, path and journey. Real trainers don't use a cookie cutter approach with their clients. I started working with Max about four months ago, and he has completely transformed how I feel—both physically and mentally. This review is way overdue—sorry, Max—but he deserves all the stars.
When I started working with Max, I wasn’t just trying to get into lifting. I needed a way to build strength while staying injury-free, so I could keep up with my kids without worrying about pulling something or feeling exhausted all the time. Max immediately got it. He listened to everything I said (and probably some things I didn’t even know I needed) and built a program that fit perfectly into my life.
What stood out was how thoughtful he was about everything. It wasn’t just about chasing numbers in the gym—every workout had a purpose. He made sure I was working on stability and mobility, not just strength, so I could move better and feel better outside the gym too. And honestly, I’ve come to love the process. I never thought I’d look forward to lifting weights, but here I am, hooked on it, because Max made it approachable and rewarding in a way that felt personal to me.

I started with Max in January of this year having never worked with a trainer before, seeking a coach to help ensure the time I spend in the gym is maximized for results. I couldn't be happier with the training and results so far! Max built a plan tailored to my goals, and he has worked with me over the course of the year evolving the plan month to month with a focus on working progressively across all exercises. The sessions in the Big Work studio are varied with a different workout planned each time, and always at an appropriate intensity level. Max listens and takes notes, constantly checking in on how things are feeling during the course of a given session. He customizes planned workouts based on whether I am nursing a particular injury or soreness, and typically incorporates stretching and mobility exercises to address. Max has also put together a program for me to focus on outside of his studio, ensuring that I've got a full week planned out. The value of the Big Work service offering really stands out - you get a ton for the money. You get out of training what you're willing to put in, and if you're ready to make the commitment, I'm confident you will love working with Max!

I am very grateful for having had the chance to train with Max here in Maynard. Besides the fact that he knows how to give you a personalized and effective workout, he is extremely kind, patient, and empathetic with all clients.
I came to Max’s studio after struggling for multiple years to get out of the beginner stages of lifting/strength training and to stop under-eating consistently. 1 minute into meeting with Max for an initial consult, I had a very good feeling that I had found the right place. Now it’s been 1.5 years of training, and I have bulked up my body weight from 180 to 205, can now deadlift weight in the 400s, squat 250+ for multiple reps, and have hit other personal goals such as holding an L-sit. I have pushed past so many mental and physical barriers during my time with Max. I love it here!!!

I trained with Max when he was offering Services in NY, in the Albany area. Super awesome trainer, and incredibly accomodating to our needs. As an unfit guy who hadn't done a lot of gym work in the past, Max was able to create a great flexible program for us to work on. He pushed me to do stuff I never thought I'd be able to do, and was a lot of fun to work with. Great trainer, and a great personality, can't recommend him enough!

So I began talking to Max Gordon at the end of 2017 and was able to start training in the beginning of 2018 after completing a bi-lateral lung transplant and some other major surgeries. We knew it would be a long road to rebuild any strength I had before but one thing that was obvious was the amount of effort Max Gordon was going to put into planning our program out and learning my complicated medical history to best help me achieve my goals. From then on, It was just one Max training another Max. We spent the next 4 years training through MULTIPLE hospitalizations, recurring events, and other challenging life moments. If you are looking for a trainer that will dig deep with you into the trenches, help guide not only your body but your mind, and support you in the best possible ways, then Max Gordan at Big Work Training Studio is the one for you. I have and always will be grateful for all the solid days we have spent training together and being able to watch how a life long friendship group out of that experience. I started training with Max at the end of 2022 after years of extremely long days, nights and weekends, and the constant high stress of a demanding professional job took its toll on my body. I was extremely overweight and my Doctor wasn’t happy about the state of things.
Max was a great trainer to engage with. Seriously coming from a “zero mobility” lifestyle, Max brought a professional, no-judgement attitude to the table. He crafted a well thought out plan for me, taking into account certain issues and limitations.
Through his positive attitude and encouragement, I was successful in my program — shedding more than 80 pounds of body fat from when I started. Under Max’ guidance, I was totally able to turn my sad physical state around for the better!!

I have nothing but great things to say about Max! I am in the process of loosing a lot of weight but I also have arthritis in my knees. When I am working out, Max is totally focused on my knees and adjusting my form to consider this weakness. A few months ago, I had to leave my previous trainer and was worried that I would not be able to find something equivalent elsewhere. As it turns out, I am far more pleased with Max than I was with my old trainer. I had to loose about 150 pounds. I am proud to say that I have lost 100 and I know, that under Max's guidance I will achieve my goal.

Big Work coming UP! Max at Big Work has been instrumental in reshaping my relationship with the gym/working out. This is my second round of training with Max. After getting off track through the pandemic, I came back to him with the goal of re-learning to enjoy the gym. After 3 months of training, I now look forward to my workouts each week and have been noticing great results. As a female, I am a bit particular about who I will workout with. Max creates a safe environment, is incredibly professional, encouraging and knows his stuff. He provides challenging, but do-able workouts and adjusts our plan based on my feedback. Max helped me with customized strength training and weight loss for close to 2 years. He was patient and flexible with my limited time availability, personal life demands, and low mobility. Before Max, I was young in my early forties, and beginning to lose flexibility and mobility due to excessive weight, health issues, and lifestyle choices. Max worked with me online for a few years now. Over the years I’ve become very unmotivated with my fitness and motivation. But Max made things enjoyable for me again in the gym. I travel a lot for work so it’s always a mystery what the gym in my hotels will be like. He made it very adaptable and effective for me. I’ve seen some of the best results training with him. As a fellow fitness professional, it’s sometimes challenging to find the time and motivation to stay on top of your own fitness goals. After a long day of one-on-one coaching and programming, the last thing you want to do is more of the same, but for yourself. A little trade secret about us trainers and coaches: we’re all our own worst clients/athletes.
This is where I turn to Max at Big Work Training. Max is one of the few people I trust to write programs for me. He always listens to my current goals and injury history and takes them into account when designing workouts for me. I also use him as a resource to help correct my form if I feel like something is off and cannot put my finger on what. For example, I am not all that familiar with proper technique on the SkiErg. I had Max take a look and within minutes I was feeling much smoother and more comfortable.
I can’t recommend Max enough for anyone, from beginners or young athletes just looking to get in better shape or improve their sports performance, to more experienced lifters trying to bring their fitness to the next level.

I have trained with Max in the No Limits in Voorheesville feels like so long ago! I also trained online with Max. Max is one of the most passionate trainer i ever had. MAX HANDS DOWN IS THE BEST TRAINER i ever had. I told Max what areas i would like to target the most and how i would like to be toned and Max listened and targeted those area.When i couldnt make it to the gym Max made sure I had my workouts i needed so i didnt fall off my journey. I used to hate going to the gym but just getting through the door because of Max energy it made me feel all pumped. I set a goal of flipping a tire and can you believe i flipped the big tire . First we start out with a standard tire and I made my way over to the big tire after 4 months. The way my body looked after the training and meal plan Max gave provided me got me there to reaching my goal. I had a moment i never thought i could do the ropes because my legs hurted Max got down in a squat position and did it with me. Max has even allowed me to bring my supportive friend and sister with me and he allowed us all work out together. I fell off because of life but i cant wait to go back to working with Max. I have known Max for 12 years as my friend, and for about 5-6 years as my (primarily) online trainer now. In those 6 years, I've moved 3 times, changed fitness goals numerous times, and had a wide range of workout space and resources available to me. Each time, Max has asked all the right questions to understand my new goals and available time commitment, and developed a killer workout plan, which he has kept dynamic by updating every few months. He's asked which workouts I've liked or felt best about, and tailored future plans accordingly. Over that time, I've become much stronger and healthier (physically and mentally). During the early days of Covid, he put together a fantastic in-home workout plan that, accompanied with regular runs, got me through incredibly isolating times. Max has also developed plans for me that have significantly improved or eliminated my knee and back pain, which bothered me and hindered my ability to participate in some of my favorite activities for 4-5 years.
As others have mentioned, for as good a trainer as Max is, he is an even better person. Growing up as a serious athlete, I am well aware of how toxic the world of competitive athletics can be, and I can't think of a better coach, role model or mentor for young athletes (and not so young).

I worked with Max both in-person and online for a number of years and I cannot say enough how amazing he is. Max has a talent to motivate you to push that extra step, to squat another squat, and shows you that your health can be a priority. Max took me through initially learning how to powerlift, to competing in a competition and then continuing to lift safely through two pregnancies. My son started training with Max in his junior year of high school. The goal was to prepare him for varsity baseball tryouts. Besides knowing his field and the science behind it, he connected with my son on a personal level beyond what most coaches take the time to do. He is really an expert at the technical component of his job but beyond that, he is just a good person. Very personable and down to earth and easy for young people to connect with and enjoy working with.

I found Max online. Was a medical student at the time and wanted to get in better shape. Best decision I ever made. Max turned out to be an amazing trainer. I trained with him three times per week for roughly 3 years, and I would 100% still be training with him if I could, but had to move for residency. Max makes going to the gym fun. He is knowledgeable and passionate about health and fitness, and because it’s so genuine you kinda get into it too.
