Sensei Noah is an exceptional teacher—skilled, patient, and deeply committed to helping kids grow. Our twins have been attending his classes for the past year (and continuing through the summer), and we’ve seen tremendous growth in their confidence, focus, and resilience.
He creates such a positive, encouraging environment, always offering kind and constructive feedback that helps kids believe in themselves and build strong character while practicing humility. We’re also thankful for his wonderful father, who steps in to teach from time to time with the same care and dedication. We couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Awesome experience for our son, Max (6)! We just wrapped up an amazing karate season and wanted to say a big thank you to Sensei Noah! Max absolutely loved the classes and really connected with the lessons.
His confidence is growing and he's been applying what he's learned outside the dojo. Just last weekend, he gave a respectful bow to a friend who hosted a graduation party—it was such a proud parent moment and a great reflection of the values you're teaching.
We're so grateful for the effort and care you put into every class. Looking forward to continuing the journey with you. Thank you again!

Boston Budo has been great for my 6 year old. We started around age 3, and this is the only activity that my child has asked to go back to again and again. The Senseis are structured, patient and fun, and the classes have helped to channel focus and energy in a positive direction. I recommend to anyone curious about karate!

An amazing place to train, grow, and feel part of a community!
I can't say enough good things about Boston Budo! From the moment our family walked in, we felt welcomed, supported, and inspired. Sensei Noah and Sensei Duane are not only incredibly skilled but also patient, encouraging, and genuinely invested in every student’s growth.
Classes are well-structured, challenging, and fun. Whether you’re a beginner or have previous experience, you’ll find the perfect balance of discipline, motivation, and personal attention here. Our daughter Olivia has gained so much confidence, strength, and focus since joining—and we have made great friends along the way.
If you're looking for a place to train hard, learn valuable life skills, and be part of a positive and respectful community, this is it. Highly, highly recommend!

Boston Budo is a fantastic karate studio! I love that it’s a family-run business spanning generations — with grandfather (Sensei Duane), son (Sensei Noah), and even the grandchildren are actively involved in the classes. Noah's energy and passion truly shines through and the kids are challenged to work hard, but always in a positive and encouraging environment. The annual tournament is a real highlight — inspiring and exciting to watch!
I also really appreciate the diversity of families who are part of the studio — it’s a welcoming and inclusive community.

Our kids have been going for over a year (now 4.5 and almost 6), during this time their instructor has fostered a real passion for karate.
From respecting the dojo, to developing self discipline, karate at Boston Budo has taught them much more than just karate skills. There is continuous assessment to determine when children are ready for their next stripe/belt colour, with clear guidance on where to improve.
Being a family business run by father and son, there is a real sense of community, with children from a higher skill level helping the younger ones (with supervision from instructors). Tournaments give a chance to showcase karate skills and practice in performing in front of an audience.
We love Boston Budo!

We are a Boston Budo family. I was drawn to karate for the numerous physical benefits of learning the form and the discipline and leadership skills the children practice in class. My children adore both Sensei Noah and Duane. We feel so lucky to have them in our community and teaching our kids!

I studied and taught martial arts for nearly 20 years. When I sent my daughter at age 4 to Noah-sensei, I did not have high expectations, given how difficult teaching martial arts to young children can be. Boston Budo blew past all expectations I may have had. My daughter has been with the program for nearly two years and has loved going week after week. More impressive has been Noah-sensei’s classroom management skills and ability to keep his students engaged. I would highly recommend you check out the classes if you are interested in martial arts.

Our 11 year old has been with Boston Budo for years and loves Sensei Noah and his Dad Sensei Duane. He tells people karate is his favorite activity. For a kid who has ants in his pants, I wouldn’t have guessed that something requiring so much focus would be for him but I think Boston Budo offers the right balance of discipline and positive reinforcement that he feels motivated to do his best.

My two kids (5 and 7) have been taking karate lessons at the Boston Budo for 2 years now. Sensei Noah is an amazing teacher! Very professional and caring at the same time - both of my kids respect and love him. What I noticed is that, apart from being a talented karate instructor, he finds learning opportunities in all situations and very often teaches kids critical life skills. My kids have grown and learned a lot and I love seeing their personalities evolving. They are both yellow belts now and very proud of their karate skills! ありがとう先生 😊

When I initially signed up for karate through Boston Budo this past fall, my goal was simply to improve my strength and fitness. Before my first class, I must confess that I was nervous about taking on something unfamiliar, and reluctant to face the inevitable struggle that comes with dusting off the cobwebs that come with middle age. However, after just a few classes, I was hooked and knew that learning karate in this dojo would challenge me physically and mentally, while also teaching me invaluable self-defense skills that have already helped my confidence. Sensei Noah is a gifted teacher: he not only lives the values he teaches, but he also is attuned to each of his students’ needs, ability, and goals. As such, he has established a refreshing sense of community and connection at Boston Budo, one where students support each other through their learning processes and aspire to incorporate the many lessons learned in the dojo to their everyday lives. I am so thankful that I took the leap of faith last fall and signed up for my first class – it has been an indelibly positive experience, one that will continue to inform and enrich all aspects of my life.

My now 8-year old son and I began taking karate at Boston Budo last spring as part of the Saturday morning family class. I saw this particular class as a unique opportunity to learn something new with my son that could really challenge and benefit both of us. For me, I was interested to learn self-defense, get stronger and had always wished I’d been introduced to martial arts as a kid. For my son, I wanted him to do something physical and disciplined, where he would gain strength, skill, confidence and focus. Over the past year, my son has attended one or two classes per week and has made so much progress. He loves going to karate. As for me, I continued to progress for several months, participating in the family class and even joining the adult class on Sunday. I have had to step away for the past few months due to an injury but hope to rejoin soon. Sensei Noah and Sensei Duane are wonderful teachers and people – different styles of teaching that complement each other. I highly recommend joining Boston Budo – and if you are a parent, take a class with your kid(s)! It has been really cool to have my son see me work hard along side him in karate as his peer, and not as his coach or parent. I think our relationship has grown because of this and I am grateful.

Every Saturday morning Sensei Noah leads our mixed class of parents and children, teenagers, and young adults of various skill, in a role for which he seems destined as a multigenerational black belt. Karate is as much mental and spiritual as it is physical and Sensei Noah embraces those foundational aspects in a manner unique to his own experience as an American who studied and taught in Japan, and born of a background steeped in the traditions of respect, honor, and discipline that have defined the Japanese culture for centuries.
For me personally, I do the class every week with my 6yo daughter and ex wife. It is the perfect setting for a family activity, especially ours since I have a lifelong dedication to martial arts and appreciation for Japanese culture and mama bear herself lived in Japan for a time. When we count, We count in Japanese. Expressions of respect are passed in Japanese. The things we do have names and those words are broken down entomologically for meaning, so everyone is learning more than "moves". More than kicks and punches. Every student, Despite skill level is being exposed to new insights and ways of interacting with the world around them.
There is a belt system that provides the goals and recognition of accomplishment necessary for you or the kids to visualize their progress. The belts and stripes therein are NOT handed out. Just like real life everything in this class is earned through dedication, hard work, and respect, something of glaring absence currently in schools and public settings. Sensei's teachings are not theoretical, and he understands the family karate dynamic because his own 2 children are part of the class and community, too
Finally, there are few better activities for building strength and character in a family than karate, and Sensei Noahs ability to foster the necessary efforts for success is something that can't be taught. He's got it. And if you are an adult seeking a dojo to continue or pursue your own actual fighting and martial skills, make no mistake- this isnt a hobby or theoretical exercise for him. I'm 46 with a lifetime of martial arts interest and experience. The classes do at times include sparring. No punching in the face, but contact is encouraged. Although I entered this discipline as a white belt with my family, when it comes time for sparring I can be matched only with sensei or another student black belt and we bang a little bit for sure. Though nearly matched in size, Sensei Noah is a hockey guy so he is incredibly sturdy and dense and I am continually reminded that no accomplishment of value comes without pain. That's another thing; people who understand the world of sports and the temperaments of athletes understand that hockey players are generally the most humble and hard-working around. When you live a life of travel leagues and 5:00 a.m. ice time it's hard to let your ego catch up to you. Really Noah is an amazing man and an amazing sensei. I don't have enough good things to say about this class as a family activity. And if you're just a guy trying to be a better guy, be a better fighter, there is nothing about this class that is downgraded for a child. Money well spent without question.

We have completed several sessions with Boston Budo, and the classes have helped my daughter (and myself) to develop physicality, confidence and discipline. Noah Sensei and Duane Sensei, the father/son team that run the program, have decades of combined experience in teaching, athletics, philosophy, artistry, and leadership, as well as deep respect for the Japanese culture - and impart all of this to their student community - resulting in a very solid, caring environment that fosters both fun and personal growth.

Karate is for all people! No matter your age, your vocation, your avocation; if you’re male or female or even your state of health.
To study Karate takes discipline; you need only to show up at class each week, the rest will take care of itself. In Karate, we smile, laugh, learn a lot, make friends, and feel like part of a group.
In Karate class, we discover that it is critical to move your body, to feel like you are in your body, especially vis-a-vis its relationship with others. In Karate, we value integrity and equality. We respect and esteem all human and sentient beings. We treat our planet earth with reverence, awe and gratitude.
You might be thinking, “Well, I’ve tried Karate before, but did not learn these kinds of things at all.” If this sounds like you, then clearly you have not studied with Sensei Noah Lucia!

So glad to be a part of the Boston Budo community. Senseis Duane and Noah are excellent teachers in so many respects. Firstly, they have a great way about them to teach adults and children. To explain technique clearly, and encourage students to refine and better themselves. Secondly, the class not only helps with karate technique, but to mind-body balance, and for kids a little discipline in tasks they can do and recognize accomplishment such as folding a gi.
May seem like little things but they all add up to form a solid foundation to build confidence, technique and mindfulness on. Boston Budo is awesome.

Great classes, fun, attentive - two incredible Senseis! My son joined at after-school and it wasn’t long before I joined him for the weekend family classes. Three years in he still counts the days between classes, and I do the same. My 7-year old daughter now practices too. Senseis Noah and Duane run a tight ship, every class has structure yet no class has been the same. The result is sustained inspiration and learning not just karate moves, but meaning and self-awareness that go well beyond the dojo. I have several years of martial arts experience elsewhere, and I could not be happier with discovering Boston Budo and the richness of experience it provides our family.

For the last few years, we’ve had the best experience at Boston Budo! Both Sensie Noah and Sensie Duane have been amazing teachers and mentors for my now 8 year old son. I appreciate the commitment, discipline and focus their practice instills in their teachings and students. They are both patient, detail oriented and inclusive; they have high expectations and demonstrate to their students the importance of always doing your best work at every stage of your journey. The tournaments they hold are wonderful for the students to showcase their work as well as a great opportunity to connect with the community. I highly recommend Boston Budo at any age!

I take 'Karate for Seniors' at the Brookline Senior Center, and Noah sensei is skillful at getting us to do warm-up exercises to enable flexibility and strength. He also teaches us katas that help promote balance and coordination and blocking moves that prepare us for self-defense. It's not only fun but it's also extremely useful for people of all ages.

As an early childhood educator and a colleague of Noah for now 3 years at the Florida Ruffin Ridley School in Brookline, I have seen how Noah brings good discipline through the art of karate to children ranging ages 5 through 14 years old.
Both, children and teens hold utmost respect when entering the auditorium; where karate takes place. They greet Sensei at the beginning and at the end of class with a respectful bow.
There is a real sense of value and dedication the way in which Noah teaches karate; a bond of trust is formed in a short period of time between his students and him.
Noah’s passion is noticeable in his professional form of teaching karate to the younger generations. As much as he cares for the learning and success of the children, they quickly develop an understanding and great appreciation for this art.
I have witnessed Kindergartners go from not wanting to attend the first couple of classes to a complete transformation in anticipating the next karate class. Many of the students have started out as Kindergarteners and are now middle schoolers or in higher grades who thrive on further developing their skills in this respectful art.
I highly recommend enrolling your child or yourself in a karate class or other course with Noah. You will not be disappointed.
He takes his craft serious as a true professional and the results really speak for themselves.

If you are thinking right now if this is the right place for you, definitely, register for classes now because the atmosphere is very friendly and supportive. I love both group and personal classes. Perhaps, I prefer personal a bit more since you have a full attention of the sensei. But group classes are awesome, too, since you have an opportunity to meet a lot of cool people.

Noah and his father and Boston Buddo have done a world of wonders for my two boys 9 and 6 (and I know tens of parents who can attest the same). We have been doing group and private classes with Noah for nearly a year and karate with him is one of the best things we are doing for their physical and emotional well-being, and my kids LOVE it. Noah is an exceptionally talented, encouraging and dedicated teacher. As the father of two young girls, married to a lovely Japanese woman, and experience as an English teacher in Japan, Noah brings a wealth of experience to his teaching and practice. I am astounded how he captivates the kids' attention, makes them listen attentively, gets them to perform amazing sequences, all the while making it super fun for them. He is acutely attuned to the different personalities of his students and encourages/coaches them accordingly, taking every kid to the next level. Every kid should learn karate with Noah - he sharpens their attention/focus (so essential in this day and age of addictive myriad screens), pushes them in a nurturing way, and develops their body awareness and strength/balance. And the tournaments are super fun for the kids - they help build community and EVERY kid comes home with a medal. Noah is for the beginner and extremely experienced karate student. Cannot recommend more highly!

My son had a wonderful introduction to karate with Sensei Noah 10 years ago, as a kindergartner. We were so grateful to reconnect recently, forming a small class of teen boys, who are thriving in their work with Sensei on martial arts and lifetime fitness skills. He knows just how to blend learning with fun and discipline, at the right developmental age for his students. He is providing our group of boys with life lessons, fitness, and mentorship that will impact them throughout the future. Boston Budo, and Noah as a Sensei is an acceptional addition to our life. First time my 15 years old teenager is actually excited about sports, thought he was swimming since he was 5. I, as a member of Karate Moms group, have to admit that though we've just recently started we are learning so much about physical and psychological aspects of self defense. Noah brings so much to the class. He knows how to make it fun and challenging at the same time, he constantly is pushing you to the next level. He is very passionate about Karate and have a great understanding of human body. So I hope we will have more classes and am looking forward to introduce my 9 years old to Noah in September.

Besides keeping it fun and mixing up the lessons with footwork and kicks/punches, Noah taught us useful self defense techniques. Noah is also a good communicator and breaks things down so we get it. Highly recommend as a workout with practical use too. Can't wait to continue more of these sessions!

My son started learning Karate when he was 2nd grade. Frankly, I had no idea about how much he would be interested and how far he could go. Now he is going to grade 3 and we keep going and keep going. We exactly experienced the shift from onsite in school to online in zoom hybridized with Saturday onsite learning with protection. That's why i got the chance to know how the class run. Coach Noah perfectly showed what the spirit of karate: strong in body, tough in mind and also soft in manner. He manage the class very well and inspired children. Every time when my boy finished class, he said to me he enjoyed it and looking for promotion (changing the belt color:)). We recently schedule a small pod class with friends and have on site class in the park close to our home, which is great choice during these special period. Coach Noah has perfect karate tradition in his family. His father was my son's karate coach in 2nd grade and his little lovely daughter is also learning karate. I think that's why Noah know very well how to lead and inspire kids.

Tradition in a Modern Setting
My son has been a student of Duane-sensei and Noah-sensei for several years and in several settings: at Hill House (including the seasonal tournaments) and at the Brookline Teen Center, in his after-school program, and now online. (The online option has been a lifesaver during lock-down, and my son loves it.) These two gentlemen – who balance their commanding classroom presences with congenial personalities and have been so generous with their time and resources – have engendered more discipline and decorum from this kid than even I can. They bring decades of knowledge of, practice in, and respect for Asian cultural traditions and practices. Taking classes with them is an invaluable opportunity for physical exercise, personal growth, confidence-building, and fun. Of all the activities in which my son participates – music lessons, other sport programs, etc. – this has been the longest-lasting and most worthwhile. We recommend it without reservation. (Note: Other prominent local dojos are not kid-friendly. This is the place to be.)

I must say, this martial arts studio is one of the only places in the area that carries the traditional values of old school karate. As a martial artist for about 25 years (I’m 42) and a senior acupuncturist, I’ve been around the “kung fu” world a long time. I’ve been to a lot of dojos. The best thing about the Boston Budo teachers, Sensei Duane and Noah, is that they met me at my level and did not withhold the “gems” of their teaching. Easier said than done once they put me through rounds! It opened my body, corrected my breathing mechanics and made new connections to things I was already practicing, but improved them. Now Tim to practice it! I also observed Sensei Noah taking his time with a younger student. He has a gift of unlocking talent, you can see it and personally experience it.

I would put Sensei Duane and Sensei Noah up against any other school around in terms of quality. They have devoted a significant chunk of their lives around perfecting this art, and it shows.
Not to mention, there are great benefits outside of class from training as well. As the old saying goes, "to train the mind one must train the body as well". My grandmother started me out in kindergarten, to "force" me to learn concentration and discipline. Your results may vary, but more than twenty years later as a black belt I can confidently say this has helped shape who I am today. From undergrad, to grad school, to my professional career, and even starting a company, the lessons learned from Sanchin have been applicable throughout my life.

By partnering with Boston Budo this year, we were able to give local children the opportunity to increase their confidence, discipline, and respect. Boston Budo shares my values of gender and racial equality and taught the children far more than the physical side of martial arts. It was a solid foundation for lifelong learning and I strongly endorse this program for all. Robin A

I’ve studied Sanchin Martial Arts under Sensei Duane Lucia for 30 years. When I moved out of the area, I checked-out several other dojos & styles (traditional Uechi Ryu, Aikido, Ketsugo Jujitsu, Arnis). In my travels, a couple of things that I already knew were reinforced: Sensei Duane is widely known and well-respected across genres in the world of martial arts (2nd to none); Boston Budo’s style, Sensei Duane, and his son, Sensei Noah are the Gold Standard in martial arts training. Nothing comes close. If you have the opportunity to train with them, do so!

I was introduced to martial arts long ago by Sensei Duane. Through Karate with Duane I was taught self defense, patience, discipline, restraint, respect for myself and others, confidence and had a whole lot of fun. I have recently picked up BJJ as a result of wanting the continue the same kind of experience I had with Boston Budo back in the day. I highly recommend Boston Budo to anyone wishing to begin/continue their martial arts journey. The Lucia family is a Boston staple and have an amazing ability to communicate and engage their students.

Boston Budo karate is much more than a sport for my kids. Sensei Noah helps them work on confidence, public speaking, eye contact, time management and leadership skills. He teaches culture, respect, and of course karate. He is so patient but also challenge my kids to keep improving.
My kids started karate in 2018 with private lessons at our apartment. Sensei Noah had no problem making our tiny living room into a temporary dojo. It was the perfect way to get started. When they transitioned from private lessons to the Saturday family class they were feeling confident and competent and ready to be a part of the Boston Budo community.
We decided to try karate after getting a strong recommendation from a well known psychiatrist guest speaker at my work moms group who said that karate (and particularly with a GOOD sensei/ dojo) is a great sport that has added side benefits like improved executive function skills. I’m very thankful for his good advice and that we found an amazing sensei who proved him right.

Great instructors! The passion and dedication Sifu’s Duane and Noah have for their art, school and students is very admirable. Very rare to come across that much honor and respect in American schools when so many are just in it for the money and belt selling. Truly exceptional.
I have been training in martial arts for 30+ years. My wife and I were visiting Boston and found out she had family she had never met living there. Our first meeting with Duane and Noah demonstrated just how humble and kind they are. They had never met me and invited me to train with them while I was in town. The class I took with them was a great physical and mental exercise. If I lived in Boston I would be honored to continue to train at their school. Highly recommended indeed!

Boston Budo is the best! 😀
I feel especially qualified to write this review as my daughter has taken both group classes and private lessons with both Sensei Noah Lucia and his father, Sensei Duane Lucia. Both instructors combine a healthy degree of authority and discipline with palpable kindness and personalized attention. My daughter has enjoyed their classes for over six years, and I have even attended some of the Saturday Family classes with her, which are great fun!

My daughter started taking karate lessons with Boston Budo five years ago. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this program. She has not only become physically stronger but has developed a strong confidence in herself and her abilities. Sensei Noah has instilled in her respect and discipline that she has been able to apply to all other aspects of her life. Highly recommend this amazing program.

We LOVE Boston Budo and the Lucia family who leads it.
We have been with Boston Budo for the past 3+ years. My daughter (10) started at the Brookline public school system, my son (8) joined couple of years ago and this past year our youngest daughter (just turned 5) joined.
They all wake up with joy on Saturdays, get dressed (older ties younger’s belt) and head to the Class. Sensei Noah and Sensei Dwain have been teaching our kids over the past 3 years not only karate but how to focus, self confidence, and many other life skills. All kids know a little Japanese now and various features of the Japanese culture that are taught alongside karate. We happily attend the tournaments the Budo organizes twice a year, and learn how much our kids have grown.
Thank you for everything you do for our family Noah and Dwain!

My son started taking karate lessons through Boston Budo at his elementary school 5 years ago, and I cannot say enough positive things about this program. Sensei Noah is a fantastic teacher who commands attention while making it fun for the kids. Not only does he teach martial arts, but he also teaches respect, discipline, and hard work, which my son has extended to other areas of his life. My son has learned a lot and continues to grow while training at Boston Budo.
Because of the positive experience that my son has had, his little sister asked to join a class. She had a great first class and she is looking forward to many more!

Boston Budo is legit. Sensei Lucia (both father and son) are able to make learning Uechi Ryu Karate (and exposing students to other disciplines) both fun and challenging. This is no Karate mill - churning out undisciplined pupils. You will be exposed to the Japanese culture, language and the hidden why's of this practice. I brought my 9-year-old to a family class to build his confidence and I got inspired to pursue my own practice. Boston Bodo will toughen you up but it will also sharpen your senses and perceptions. Both Duane and Noah are able to explain their understanding of Karate and human nature in a way that is very accessible for little ones and adults alike. I would recommend Boston Budo to anyone that is open to learning. For those who are not, both Senseis are adept in working with pupils without allowing poor behavior. You will walk out of a Boston Budo class exhausted but also with some additional knowledge that will help you improve your practice.

Both my brother and I took classes with Sensei Duane at Hill House when we were younger. I only made it to yellow belt but I still remember some of Sanchin! I’ll send my little one when she’s old enough.
