This place used to be pretty great but it seems like it's been neglected a lot in recent months. The last time I went, I ended up refunding my day pass because the bouldering section was absolutely filthy and in disrepair. The crash mats are old and outdated, some spots are tearing and the tape holding them together was completely detached. The entire place was frankly disgusting. I've climbed on and off there for about a year and I've never seen it so bad. Clumps of dust and old fabric basically lining every corner, gross stains, dirt and old chalk everywhere. Mind you this was on a weekday and several staff were just loitering at the front desk. Bathrooms were disgusting as usual, and the whole place really just smelled awful. Odds are very low that I'll ever come back. I really hope they can turn this around, but the current state, at least in my last visit, was absolutely appalling.

I’m updating my original review, 5 stars, down to 4 stars. I’ve climbed here for almost 10 years. I’ve seen plenty of staff and clientele come and go, routes and ropes reset, etc. I am familiar with many aspects of the gym and have made many friends with the great community of climbers who call Carabiners ‘home’.

Lately I have been disappointed by the gym. The cleanliness of the facility (particularly the bathrooms) is a major detraction to the experience. I think a professional cleaning service, or more, a renovation, is in order for both upstairs and downstairs areas. On this point, some top rope sets have been on the walls for over three years (looking at you, center pillar and “speed wall”.. and also the back wall.. and also some of the side walls?!). These holds are so caked in grime and chalk that it is difficult to tell which color you’re holding (from above). There has been a push to refresh the tall walls this fall/winter, an excellent thing to see and this effort kept my review at 4 stars, rather than 3.

With those criticisms, compliments are also due, as Carabiners is still worth 4 stars. You will not find a friendlier, “chill”-er atmosphere that caters to tall wall climbing in MA. The staff have all been friendly and are usually regulars-turned-employees, so are familiar and welcoming. The boulder sets are regularly changed and provide some of the most challenging bouldering out of the area gyms.

I just wish Steve would clean the place up a little bit!

I went this past Saturday. Had a great time here! It’s so much harder than I was expecting & loved the challenge. We did some bouldering & we were pretty humbled! The staff were beyond welcoming. They got us all pumped up about rock climbing! Everyone was super knowledgeable and friendly. You can only do so much bowling & axe throwing, so my brother recommended this place. If you’re competitive & looking for a fun & different weekend, definitely try this place out. Heads up for the ladies: it’d be much easier without long nails.

If you're in the area I would recommend a visit to Carabiner's, mostly because the vibes are excellent: it's like stepping into a time machine back to 2000 (except with a Moonboard 2019 and an adjustable Kilter on the way!). The facility is grimy and greasy, with unique wall angles for ropes and boulders, and stiff resistance climbs. There are showers and a somewhat cramped, but surprising well-equipped, weight training area and cardio deck.
Despite its charm, the facility has certainly not kept up with the times. The bouldering leaves much to be desired, if you desire techy foot sequencing, coordination, or fiberglass. Some of the holds might be older than me. I'm not sure if ropes are ever reset...?
Give the place a try anyway. You might get a little dusty, but you won't regret it. Friendly staff and friendlier members.

July 2024 Different, bad review since Tyler left... bring him back!!!
Well....it was bad. Tyler wasn't there anymore, the AC was out and the workers didn't have the experience to help my grandson. They were short staffed so nobody could help my grandson do what he wanted to do. A new girl was there and she told my grandson, who already has a fear of heights, but is working on overcoming it, that she hurt her arm on it, and when she was coming down, that she almost flipped backwards. He got very upset and is a high functioning autistic 10 year old, who proceeded to have a full meltdown. I asked for my $ back, got it and left. I didn't learn what she had said to him until he calmed down. He was so excited to go, new shoes, harness and gloves. He was devastated for the rest of the day. Unfortunately I'll be going to a different rock climbing place in RI. different, bad review since Tyler left... bring him back!!!

Spent $60 to disappoint my daughter. What hurt more you ask… paying $60 to drive 30 min away or breaking it to my daughter she couldn’t climb? I Was a member years ago. (Took time off from climbing to be a dad also my climbing partner just gave birth) Came back after 2 years and asked for a refresh course and the staff told me no problem. Then after no refresher Puts me with some one who just asked me questions about how to tie knots… no refresher then failed me because I never got a refresher. We then played with a hula hoop… keep in mind I was a certified belayer from that gym taught by Steve the owner 2-3 years prior and they had my paper work on file. Needless to say I’m not going back for a membership.

We LOVE this place! One of a kind great spot to get some exercise in without it feeling like exercise. The have automatic belays meaning even if you go alone a few minutes of training and you'll be fine to climb alone. It is so fun to climb here. This is the highest top rope I have ever climbed. The landscape is fun, and the distances between handhold/footholds are larger than what I am used to. They use grigri so it is safer and easier to belay. The owner is so nice and outgoing. I highly recommend it.

Least favorite climbing gym I’ve been to in the past 12 years of climbing. Seemed like the place could use a good cleaning the multiple times I went.

Great for those who are new to climbing, but saw the owner doing too many climbing taboos (to just name one example of many: multiple accounts where he beta sprayed other people-who after their interaction, quite obviously didn’t want to be beta sprayed as I would witness head shakes or eye rolls). Found myself trying to only plan times to go there when the owner wouldn’t be there- because I didn’t want to have to be one of the people he bothered that day. Thankfully, we never really interacted other then once…but the vibes just weren’t right for the rest of the gym.

I’ve always enjoyed my home gym and getting to know the owners and staff, but this place just wasn’t the right fit.

I have been going to carabiners for a little under 2 years and it's been a pleasure every time. Each single staff member is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Wow! What a cool place. They have everything I could ever want in an indoor space: super tall walls, unique features (wait until you see the wall shapes!), lead climbing and plenty of bouldering, a slackline, punching bag, tons of pullup bars and gym equipment, huge space for yoga and fitness. This was my first visit and though I live over an hour away it's definitely worth the drive. Staff is super friendly and the setting is fantastic- creative, varied and very challenging. Great variety of routes and problems. A great place to get into the sport as they have a great rate on rentals. They also offer better gear for purchase. Very kid friendly and offers a variety of classes for all levels and interests. The staff seek to really enjoy the sport itself.

The owner is a very nice man and employees are helpful but the crowd that hangs out their is very rude. Climbers are always stuck in their ways of how they do things but I've seen many "advanced" climbers lash out and be really rude to new climbers. Being a climbing instructor myself and climbing for over a decade it is disconcerting to see new climbers be turned off by stuck up climbers who think they know what's what. Like I said before the staff are great and the owner is a very nice guy, its nothing against them but they should really be on the look out for climbers harassing new comers. We have all been the new guy so try to be helpful and not harmful.
