Was just in town for a day, and had so much fun dropping in for a session. It's on the small side but there was plenty of fun routes across grades. Staff was friendly too!

Oftentimes what small gyms lack in space, they make up for in thoughtful setting and a warm community. This gym does not.

When we arrived, the staff member was busy calling an ambulance for someone that had a nasty fall. After having climbed there, I'm only surprised that the EMTs weren't more familiar with the location. A few common themes emerged in the setting: lachés, contortions, and what I can only describe as "foothold spray and pray". Especially at the upper grade range, although there were a few decent -- if soft -- problems (though what commercial gym isn't soft these days?) more left me genuinely wondering if I was living in an AI hallucination.

I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone looking to train, not least because there is no board climbing and because the lone hangboard is trapped in a cage of pull-up/laché practice bars. And on the flip side, I also wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone not looking to train. Save your 34 dollars and visit one of the numerous other gyms in the area.

Been a member for 3 years, I have never been treated so rudely at any other crg. Tonight, at exactly 10:00pm sharp, while I was literally just washing my hands, the staff blasted the announcement speaker yelling “We are closed! You can go back and wash your hands at home!” Then he immediately shut off all the lights, with a few customers still packing their bags in the dark.

I tried my best to quickly pack my stuff (in the dark). By the time we walked out, he stopped us at the door and started blaming us: “You need to respect people’s closing time. People who work here sometimes come from another job too.” I looked at my phone, it was 10:01 pm.

I was like: Excuse me??? Working multiple jobs is no excuse to treat customers like that. Idk if he’s supposed to, but he didn’t clean behind us either, he just scolded us and left.

I don’t necessarily think this was a racism/sexism issue, but I also believe if we were not just 5 Asian girls, if we were 5 bigger men than him, he would’ve handled this a lot more reasonably.

I don’t know his name but he worked the last shift Aug 20th, 2025. White male with beard. Pretty tall, super mean.

It's looks small, but there's surprising variety, especially if you're a slab fan. There's proportionately more slab and vert here than at many gyms. The restrooms are in various states of disrepair, so don't count on a shower being available.

Stopped using the gym on the 20th of June but wouldn’t let me cancel for the 1st of July.

I sent out an email and two follow ups but could only get a response when I called them. Even though they specifically asked me to reach out through email.

They also charged me incorrectly for the first month of my membership and I had to reach out to get that corrected.

Wow, such a horrible experience. I literally never leave reviews, but came in tonight to try to set up a membership. The Asian person on desk was rude, dismissive, and literally would answer “I don’t know” to basic membership and safety questions. I literally walked out because I didn’t know what to even say. I hope management see this and reevaluates how staff is trained. It’s worth driving the extra distance to go to the Bouldering Project.

Modern modular bouldering only gym on the smaller side. Most of the sets are stale and greasy but expected for this high traffic location. As with other Boston gyms there is a penchant for high cruxes on glassy feet catering to their core youth customer base, but less appeasing to older crushers. No frills free weight area with the bare minimum of equipment. No boards, campus board, or for that matter any training equipment. Prepare to scrape by if your are here for anything other than a bouldering only session.

"no teaching allowed" not even advice for better belay stance or anything of the sort. This place should be ashamed of themselves, but they're not. It's not even that great of a gym lol, but the trendy people seem to like it. I'll stick with real rocks from now on

Pretty new and clean CRG in a very convenient location next to a T stop and Bluebikes station. Grading can be a touch soft and problems skew easier for taller climbers. Wish they had a bit more diversity of problems or features, ideally more overhang.

On the front of the building here, is some kind of a storm drain.

This review is going to be somewhat unfair, because the storm drain and it's issue is not entirely the fault of Central Rock Gym, however because their business is affected by it, and since the issue is unresolved, they do bear some responsibility to their customers and passersby.

On Tuesday, July 9th, I was walking along, stepped in the algae-covered sidewalk and fell hard in my shoulder.

Anyone approaching this business had better be aware, because if you are over 50, you're definitely going to be hurting more than your pride. For elderly tourists and visitors, this is a serious risk and should not have been allowed to develop.

I have received unsatisfactory follow up thus far, and this review will remain up until it has been resolved to my satisfaction.

Edit: I remain waiting for contact from Central Rock Gym directly. I have downgraded my review to 1 star for poor management and unresolved safety issues. I have also reported this safety violation to the City of Boston. If these people seriously cared, they would have resolved it by now.

It's a nice little gym. The staff are friendly and the area is decent. It definitely is *little* though and can get crowded pretty easily.

I've been coming here regularly for a few months now, as it is the most accessible climbing gym for me, and I've really been feeling burnt out by the setting style. I would truly rather go to any other CRG if they weren't so far at this point.

All the climbs rely wayyy too heavily on slippery/nonexistent feet, it just makes the climbing less fun. I'm fine working out a tricky foot sequence or trusting my balance on a small foot hold every now and then, but this basically applies to all problems v6 and above it feels. I feel like this is also making me a weaker climber since I find it much harder to truly test my body at this gym, often my forearms and legs are super tired but nothing else. I'd really rather have more powerful climbs, cranking through small holds and high tension positions, than the more sketchy/smear on nothing climbs that I find here. Maybe the foot holds are also just over used and slippery because the gym gets too much traffic.

This is just my opinion, but I've had way more fun at other CRG branches. This one suits its purpose as a small climbing destination, but I'd wish that they change the climbing style up a little bit.

Been a member for around 1.5 years now, and have held off on reviewing, but here are my pros and cons:

Pros:
- Staff are generally friendly and nice!
- Area is always clean
- Convenience of location

Cons:
- PRICE (especially compared to Rock Spot Climbing, likely my biggest qualms). Membership price has increased this past year, yet perks/hours/amenities have seemingly decreased.
- Inconsistency of the setting schedule
- Hours, very limited hours, especially for those who work and would like to climb in the morning.
- Lack of member perks (ties into the price issue, for the price the perks should be much more)
- Lack of guest passes (Only 1 per month, and that one must be a brand new visitor, otherwise they pay sticker price. This also ties into perks and price con)
- Limitations of climbing due to “competitions”. This is a smaller qualm, but it is annoying as competitions benefit only a small percentage of people, those competing. Outside of that, closures of multiple zones for multiple days, multiple times a year, gets frustrating (especially for the price, not to be repetitive).
- Chalk buckets are now filled with individual chalk socks….? Why have a chalk bucket if you are not going to put loose chalk in it?

Overall: Nice area and facility, however the experience has not been worth the price as of late.

My most constructive criticism would be to focus less on attracting new business, and focus more on appeasing your current customers.

Came here as a guest and I was expecting the ropes and harnesses like they have at other rock climbing gyms but they don’t have that here. Nonetheless, it’s still a safe and fun experience. Landing mats are super soft foam pads so that when you jump off the wall and land on your back, you don’t hurt yourself. Plenty of rocks to choose from even as a beginner, but not all of them have the holes to grab onto, so I would stick with those. Lots of wall space, but if you’re walking around the gym when crowded, just be careful no one jumps off the wall when you’re passing by.

Have been coming for a little over 6 months and the setting has been great with some challenging ratings at times that push you. Super friendly staff and fellow climbers.

Room for improvement though:
- bike parking is unchanged since opening and the original reviews. Good weather days usually result in bikes locked to trees and anything else solid. For an urban location (with an outdoorsy and young target audience) it seems like a major oversight.
- only 1 of the 4 showers has ever worked since I started coming making it a hard choice for a morning workout and they have not shown interest in fixing them. Additionally there is no where to hang your towel.

Not a bad little gym. Positives - Good sets, nice holds, consistent grades, good music, pretty clean, communal chalk pot (nice touch), and nice staff. Negatives - Small gym with only one main wall, no system board, very small workout area, no sustained overhang area, and $30 to get in. If you’re stuck in the middle of the city with no car it’s worth the visit. If mobile, make the trip to a bigger gym.

I've been climbing at the fenway location since it opened and appreciate the friendly staff. I climb v2-v4 and think the climbs are pretty fun.
Some areas for improvement:
- only one shower has worked since they opened, despite having showers built into all the bathrooms. Also, no towels.
- limited morning hours, only open wednesday mornings. I would love to climb in the morning before work if they fixed the showers and expanded hours
- this gym is very hot in the summer! The harvard sq gym is much cooler/more comfortable to climb at during warmer months.
Overall, a great gym, but wish that some of these issues could be addressed so we could make the most of our membership :)

As I'm a huge CRG fan boy, take this with a grain of salt, but...huge fan

The layout is fantastic, with plenty of space for problems and avoids the "small group projecting a boulder effectively shuts down a a whole section" problem other gyms can have.

The boulders seem graded in the middle of the crg range, and with the creative styling I find unique to crg; making interesting-feeling VBs through V3s that help even bad (read: me) or new climbers learn better body position and technique.

Accessibility is great for cyclists and T users, but parking in the area might make it hard for people accustomed to driving I to Boston.

Staff is friendly and helpful. The clientele is mostly younger adult, which makes sense as Fenway is surrounded by colleges; that might be a downside to some though, as it means it's loud and high energy.

My only con, and this is a real reach) would be that the long skinny layout means that the pads don't extend as far as they do in places like Randolph/Cambridge, which isn't a real safety concern but can feel like one in the moment.

First time at this gym. Overall, a good climbing gym, and a good location. The routes seem to be rated harder than at the CRG Boston location near North Station. This is just an observation, not a criticism; climbing grades don’t matter as long as they are consistent within the gym.

I didn’t try all of the walls during my session, but a good bit of the V4 and up slab routes I tried seemed to rely on big dyno moves. Again, this is not a criticism; many people like these kind of dynamic climbs. For me, I prefer static climbing with more technical footwork over jumping across the wall and hoping to stick a hold. This is just a matter of preference; for me, I like to train for outdoors where static climbing is usually preferred.

Conclusion: it’s a good gym and I will be returning.

Brand new location accessible right off the Green Line. Parking a car nearby will always be a toss-up without a long walk unless you pay for the expensive Red Sox lots.

Fresh, clean facility but doesn't yet have a hangboard or campus board (coming soon). Until then, warming up the fingers isn't much of an option before getting on the boulders. Setting feels similar to the North Station location in terms of difficulty and variety. Having four bathrooms is nice, but there's a bit of a lack of storage for belongings at the moment. I imagine they'll add more soon.

Probably going to be more crowded more often than other locations due to the nearby college population. I'll definitely be returning. A 6AM opening slot would be a nice addition to the schedule.

Cool routes in an awesome space. It's already pretty popular but never feels crowded because there's lots of room to stand away from the walls. Beautiful new gym. Needs more bike parking.

There’s like 4 bike rack spots and about 25 bikes parked outside locked to trees or street signs. The gym is not even crowded and the bike parking is like this. Once this gym becomes as popular as the other CRGs, it’ll be significantly more of a mess.

Edit: Idk how to respond to your response, but I’m thrilled to hear that!
