The staff at this gym could be nicer, and less snobby. It’s been a bit uncomfortable how the staff interacts with customers, on more than a few occasions.

Fun climbing and good setting, great gym all around.
2025 update: there's a Tension Board 2 now! So stoked to have one nearby.

Pros: large gym with great resources. Bouldering, lead, weights, tension board, kilter board.

Con: this is the softest gym I’ve ever climbed at. v7s will feel like v5s at some of the harder CRG locations. Great for an ego boost but not so great if you’re looking for challenging climbs to help you improve. I’ll probably spend a lot of time on the kilter board to compensate.

Went with a friend on a Sunday and it was not too busy. $64 for us both to climb. They do not teach belaying so we were stuck only being able to do the self belay, which is really awesome to use, but unfortunately there is only a few of them available. So it ends up being a solid chunk of money for what you are actually able to do.

If you have your own gear etc this would probably be an awesome gym to be a regular at.

The boulder setting at CRG is fun (great feeling movements) and accessible (multiple foot options for climbers of varying heights). I was in town for a few days and I planned to just climb their tension board, but I never made it out of the bouldering sections. The locals were kind and the staff was helpful.

Excellent and friendly staff, regularly set routes and plenty of wall to go around. On top of that, there are fantastic classes for climbing, fitness, and yoga. It can be on the expensive side to start but there are options to help if you need it. I recommend climbing to anyone and everyone and this is a great place to start.

My son and I have had a membership here for about a year, and we have visited numerous other CRG locations in that time as well. Hadley feels the most like home base for me. The staff is great, facilities are clean, and the vibe always feels inclusive. The hours are also a huge plus compared to some of the other locations. The cost of membership is worth every penny to me, and I really only scratch the surface of what is included in their membership. Try it out, and be extra nice to all the cool people who work hard so we can enjoy this sport. :)

UPDATE: Management immediately called back and was helpful to resolve the original issue. Very impressed with Elayne and Aaron. Thank you.

My kids really enjoy the gym and all the auto belays are great.

ORIGINAL POST: I was a previous member and climbed with my 2 younger kids this week as a trial to see if they would be interested in making rock climbing a routine activity. I paid $67 for three. It was very busy at the front desk and I asked the staff if I could turn the day pass into a membership and was told I could wait a week to decide.

I came back before the week timeline that was told to me and when I returned I was told that as previous members I would have to pay full price for myself and one of my kids, which was not what was originally discussed.

Really disappointed that I was given the wrong information, would lose out on the day pass payment, and that previous member/family membership isn’t valued as much as a new climber.

I really wanted to like this gym, but it's been a huge disappointment. Although the gym officially closes at 10 pm, large parts of it are unusable since about 9:15 pm because that's when the staff starts to clean and vacuum (while members are still present). They do this in a very passive-aggressive way, often standing with a loudly humming vacuum under active climbers, waiting for them to get out of the way, essentially pushing people out. This vacuuming is not pleasant even in areas that are not being actively vacuumed as climbing to the sound of a loud vacuum cleaner is just not much fun. Last but not least, the vacuum cleaner's cord is a major tripping hazard, which shows that this gym has no respect for its members. I'm glad that UMass opened the Ascend Wall--a much better alternative to this poorly managed gym.

We love CRG Hadley! My 11yo son did the summer camp and became obsessed, I (45yo} was looking for a fitness routine, so we both joined 6 months ago and have gotten our money's worth 20 times over. We climb together 2-3 times per week, I do some of the yoga classes, and I have done the climbing progression classes and the weight room basics class. Sara was awesome as our instructor for the weight room basics class; I can finally use free weights with confidence! We have built strength, community, confidence, and resilience all in one place!

CRG claims to promote economic inclusivity through their β€œsliding pay scale,” but functionionally this is untrue.

You must show up at opening time on one specific date EVERY monthβ€”and the worst part is that they keep this date a secret.

Their staff are not informed by management as to which day it is, and there is no information on their website as to which date it is.

Virtue signaling with little-to-no action to back up their claims.

The staff are actually lovely though!! I have realized that this is 100% an issue with management/owners.

Central rock hadley is by far the best. The smell of feet reminds me of home.
The setting for bouldering, lead, and rope climbing is great, they always manage to set climbs that please everyone’s unique styles and abilities. If your struggling on the dynos don’t worry there just set to please the crazy college kids. The coaches along with the staff are kind and supportive. There very helpful if you have an questions and never disappoint. MOST of the people are nice (watch out for the stalkers). This place never reminds me of chucky cheese don’t listen to the other comments. There just jealous the kids send harder then them. If your not prepared to get CRUSHED by youth climbers watch out… (STAY AWAY FROM REC TEAM HENRY... also known as the WORST henry)

CRG Hadley is obvi the best CRG out there! The staff is like so amazing in every way so you should 100% go there just to meet them! The gym smells like feet which totally = so good! The bouldering is so on point and so fun! Along with rad boulder problems, CRG Hadley also has a large variety of fantastical top rope and lead climbs. The CRG Hadley also has incredible youth teams kids and best climbers out there. The coaches are so great and this makes the climber kids so great to be around and everyone loves them! Everything in the gym is so lovely and safe and overall CRG Hadley is a MUST go too out of all of the CRGs out there!

CRG Hadley is the BEST CRG out of all of them. The essences in the air are like shining dust and create happiness throughout the whole gym. The coaches and workers are all friendly and always do their tasks with such magical energy. And I know u may be thinking that every climbing gym feels like this.... but that isn't true. I have gone to many other gyms that lack the beauty and booming glow that CRG hadley has which i think is very important if u want to climb with true passion. CRG hadley is also rooted in the blooming fields of hadley, because of this the climbers at the gym get to admire wonderful and uplifting views and sunsets through the many windows that light up the gym. The setters are great, the staff are great, the coaches are great, the climbs are great, and most importantly... the sends are great, there is literally nothing at CRG hadley that isn't great. If you are feeling down and empty and need something to give you a glowing day, go to the CRG hadley because it never disappoints.

Great place, the staff are polite, nice and helpful. They taught us how to rock climb first time no problem.

There are 3 waivers you must complete before you climb, you can do these at home before visiting CRG.

There are maybe 20 or so bouldering routes, maybe 10 or so auto-belay lines, and another 20 or so belay climbs.

The fitness room area upstairs was disappointing. Out of maybe 8 or so treadmills only 1 was working. Wish they would update those machines for when you want a break from climbing.

There are lockers to lockup your stuff with your own lock. There are also cubbies out in front where you can store your stuff, according to staff no one steals here, so you should be safe. There are showers in the locker room.

If I could give CRG 6 stars I would, and I really should since this review is almost a week late. I walked in last Friday to ask about the chance to take a lesson or learn privately with an instructor. I know how to belay (I work at a camp which has a top rope three-faced wall, bouldering, and multiple high rope elements) but I have (HAD!) a mental block and a fear of climbing. Elayne (who I later learned is the General Manager happened to be standing at the desk when I walked in and was very sympathetic to my plight. She answered all of my questions, worked with my schedule (I'm not from the area and was only visiting for the weekend), and then booked me a session with her for the holiday Monday before I left for home.

To say that this lesson was lifechanging would be an understatement. I walked in with some apprehension, but after meeting Elayne several days prior it felt much less than I had anticipated. I got geared up (with the gym's rentals since I had forgotten to bring my own harness and had never used climbing shoes before) and we were off to check off my knot tying and belay skills. That was reassuring because even though I fumbled my first re-trace figure eight (nerves, OK!?) Elayne remained understanding, calming, and kind. Then it was time to climb and I can only say that the rest of the experience was empowering. We spent an hour focusing on fundamentals, falling, and technical aspects that all truly made me feel inspired and excited to keep going. Oh, and sore,...but in the best way!

I felt so great that I went climbing the next night at a gym closer to my camp back in NJ,....and I miss CRG and Elayne. For anyone who is nervous, anxious, scared as a beginner climber or going through anything even as experienced climbers I promise that Elayne and CRG will help you.

Friendly staff, fun routes, and welcoming to kids. My daughter had a hard time on one of the routes and it took a lot of coaxing to get her to come down. I tried to help her as did a staff member, but when she finally got down in tears and we were walking away the manager came up and rather callously told me in the future not to climb up to help her. Fair point, but poorly delivered and not the right moment.

Decent sized indoor climbing gym with weights room, yoga room and stretching area. They have lots of top-ropes, lead lines and bouldering problems. In terms of variety, they have good vertical and overhanging climbs spanning all kinds of holds. There's only one slaby wall for top-rope, which right now has pretty easy routes. The staff is super friendly as well.

UPDATE: this location is setting up both a kilter board AND a tension board. Thanks for listening to the members! They now close at 10 on weekdays and 7pm Saturday and Sunday. I’ve also been seeing more slab sets that are in the mid range of difficulty.

In exchange for the awesome new system walls, though, the spray wall has been taken down. πŸ₯²

Original post: Good setting, softer grades than most gyms I’ve climbed at. (I onsight V7 here consistently and project V6 outside.)
Sometimes I come across a V6 that easily feels like a V3-4. I climbed a V9 the other week after three sessions, I could maybe do that on a V6/7 outside.

The sport routes are GREAT and challenging. Very consistent and taller 45’ walls.

The lead wall is stellar. It models outdoor climbing more than any other gym I’ve been a member of.

I wish there was a more mid range slab set and a taller slab wall to practice footwork mobility and balance. They are lacking in this area and in climbs that challenge my technical ability in the mid V5-V8 range. It’s either an easy V1-3 or an impossible V9-10 slab or techy problem. There needs to be a happy medium. I know this is a huge challenge. Bring in some guest setters from NYC or Memphis Rox and do some challenges for the setters!

That said, they are accommodating for all ages and skill levels. Kids area up top along with a hard as nails spray wall you can use the β€œStōkt” app with on the other side. Open 6am-11pm MWF and 11am-11pm Tuesday and Thursday with shorter weekend hours; usually closing at 7pm.

Workout area is underused and has a phenomenal selection.

Yoga is offered, I have yet to take a class and do my own flow at home.

This gym is EXPENSIVE: you do get access to multiple gyms, but when I am traveling, I am climbing outside, not another gym. I wish they offered a yearly membership at a slight discount or a Hadley only gym price at a lower cost. The 2022 membership monthly price is $89 for one person and $145 for a couple. I believe the student price is $65 a month. This mirrors NYC gym prices and they can do this because they have monopolized the northeast.

For the price they are charging they don’t even provide a system wall (Moonboard, tension board, kilter board, grasshopper.) or nearly enough auto belays. even when they have the space for it. I really hope they implement these in the next few years. And I will keep pestering until they do. This is a HUGE value add for climbers that train and would be a huge asset to your comp kids. The other locations have one, why not here in western mass?

I had a moonboard provided at my grungy gym that cost me $40 a month back in Tennessee, for reference.

I have made countless friends here and it is my home away from home, but this is CRG Hadley warts and all.

The gym itself is fine, but after work hours its always busy and there are way too many kids. The biggest gripe I have with this place is they increased student discount membership prices not once, but twice, without any sort of notification. Went from 55/month to 65/month to 69/month. I understand increasing prices, but without sending a courtesy email about their decision is a terrible business model and goes to show how much this franchise cares about its members.

25 dollars for a day pass seems quite high for a rather outdated gym. Up your auto belay scene, get new not overly worn holds, and resurface the walls. Then $25 seems reasonable. That being said, the weight area was a good size and decently equipped. Maybe I’m just accustomed to modern gyms with more to offer the partner-less climber that wants a bit more than bouldering. Overall this place is well sized, decent, and you can get a pump on.

This is one of the better indoor rock climbing gyms in the area. The walls are all ranked and changed frequently, so there’s always something new. The bouldering scene is pretty big here and is usually very busy. If you want to top climb but don’t have a belayer, they have a good β€œbelaying buddy” system where you can sign up with a date and time and you’ll almost always find a buddy. Also, don’t forget to ask for a student/veteran discount!

Fantastic gym!

-The facility is great. It's a huge space with lots of bouldering and rope climbing as well as a weight room, yoga room, and several practice areas. They expanded a year or two ago, nearly doubling the size of the facility.
-The folks who work here are awesome. Everyone is kind and welcoming, and they're always willing to help you with questions, whether it be about shoes, equipment, or hints on a difficult boulder problem. The fellow climbers are also friendly, so you'll feel comfortable here whether you're a total novice or a lifelong climber.
-They have lots of nice programs, classes, and events. They had a cool series of competitions (free for members!) over the summer that I really enjoyed taking part in. In addition, there are regular family nights, social events, and a nice slate of classes to help you improve climbing skills.

More than all else, CRG does a great job of fostering a friendly and welcoming community space. This is a great place to have fun, stay fit, and meet people. I highly recommend it.

The first time I climbed, it was here. I had never played a sport besides ultimate and had never worked out. I had never enjoyed fitness. I was terribly afraid of heights. I strongly resembled a human-sized string-bean, but short.

Now, almost five years later of facing my fears and going up rocks, I’m in love. I rock climb four days a week, am the president of my collegiate rock climbing team, am a certified fitness instructor, work out regularly, am a route setter, and look a lot less like a string-bean (I’m still short though). I have CRG Hadley to thank for changing my life and mentality about my body and abilities, and CRG Hadley to thank for allowing me to find my passion.

Go here if you want to have fun. Go here if you like puzzles but don’t want to work out. Go here if you don’t want to work out but do want to be in shape. Go here if you like working out. Go here if you like working out but want to change things up.

After filing out the waiver and explaining i was completely new to climbing to one of the two desk clerks, she informed me as a college student i could get the monthly rate at $65. Then the other clerk proceeded to give me a tour and when we arrived back at the front desk she explains then tells me there is no student discount. They didn't seem all that receptive of me in the first place so maybe they were just trying to get rid of me. I know I'm new and not the coolest but i thought the community would be a bit more welcoming. Either way I'm not paying $90/month to climb on fake rocks, thats more than my electric bill.

This place is unfortunately the worst of the central rock gyms. This makes it still much better then a lot of the older gyms, but frustratingly there is a lot of room for improvement. Even though they expanded which was great, the main facility and a lot of other areas have been completely neglected for a long / continue to be neglected. The bathrooms are absolutely disgusting, there are things that are broken for excessive amounts of time all over the place. A lot of the holds despite the new expansion are still completely glassed over and this doesn't appear to be a concern. A lot of the staff are also incredibly rude and often not very helpful; having some high school kid be the only one around who has no idea what's going on doesn't really make me feel confident. There a a few staff or coaches that are helpful and friendly but not most.

The staff is always helpful in various ways. The routes are constantly changing, and with new setters the climbs are always unique. This particular gym has A++ instructors for weight training, yoga, and climbing injury prevention classes, and so on. Fun environment, highly recommend Hadley Rock Gym!

CRG is an awesome place to climb! The space is awesome with two difference climbing rooms, both with bouldering, lead, and belay. You don’t have to have any experience to go, and you can take a belay course to get certified! Everyone is super friendly and great (-: I recommend trying it out!

I love going to climb and hang out with friends. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the people you find in the gym are wonderful. Lots of interesting routes both for bouldering and top rope. They re-rock different sections fairly frequently which is nice considering I'm usually there 3-4 times a week.

Desk staff are often rude and condescending. The holds are all greasy, even when they're first put on. They're old and they would benefit from new ones. The setting is all in only a couple styles so very boring and repetitive. They set an unreal amount of v1/2 and only about two v5 and maybe two v6 for half of the gym. SUCKS IF YOU CLIMB HARD. They could be setting way more problems on the wall, they definitely have the space. Members get one 'guest pass' a month but if they bring someone who's already been there, they still have to pay (half price but STILL). CRG has a great gym in Boston (where the Hiest is hosted), this gym should be more representative of that higher standard. Sucks because it's the only gym option if you're a student.

I've been going for 6 months and it's been such a positive experience. People are respectful and encouraging, and it's not hard to find a climbing buddy.
I've been climbing twice a week with a class on the weekends and have gone from climbing 5.5 to doing a couple 5.9s and have lost ~10 lbs. I didn't come in very fit, and I'm 5'4" (on a good day) so making the progress I have took work. Definitely recommend it as a regular gym, not just an event or excursion (though it's fun for that, too).

The recent expansion makes this place even more amazing than it was before. Lots of bouldering (with seamless padding) and climbing. CRG is nice. It's expensive, but they re-set the routes pretty often and generally set some really good stuff. I took off a star because they play classic rock constantly, and the climbing team occasionally takes over whole sections of the gym. No big deal, still a good place to climb.

This is a phenomenal place...the facility, rentals, climbing, and staff are amazing. My organization wanted to host a fundraising event for the Nepal earthquake and the staff went WAY beyond what was expected to help us do that. Not only did we raise a bunch of money but I think we also sold people on the gym just by getting them in there and letting them see how great the whole place is.

The Central Rock Gym is a great place to work out. I enjoy the community there from the fellow climbers and the staff. The routs on the wall are really fun and challenging. The thing that I like most overall is really the community of climbers there I know I said it earlier but this really matters. Sure you could go and climb till you are done then leave. For most of the people that I know there this is not what happens. Having trouble on a route, other climbers will give you suggestions on how to finish it and often wont leave till you are done and when you finish a particularly challenging climb people will sometimes cheer. I am just as likely to talk about a new route as I am to ask about how things are going in there life. It really is the sense of community that makes me love this place. :)

I walked into CRG Hadley having never climbed before. Once I saw the prominently displayed cave structure, I knew I had to do this and that I would love it. I have been going 3 days a week for the last 10 months. The people are really great here - staff and members. I strongly recommend coming out to at least see the cave but also to try some climbing!

For the last six years PVPA has been taking large groups of climbers to CRG for our three-week January term, Paideia. The high school group climbs for the whole school day, and the middle school climbs for half the day. We have found the staff professional, fun, accommodating, positive, and invested in the development of all levels of climbers. The students love watching the route setters at work, and this year a few of them were invited to test climb new routes to help determine ratings. For two years running the staff has set up an obstacle course as our peak experience, and it never disappoints. Since we are there for three whole weeks we have been able to observe the staff at work with various groups from 5 year olds, to adult groups, to the impressive climbing teams; their knowledge, professionalism and dedication to the art of climbing is remarkable. Overall, we love the CRG, it has been a haven of camaraderie, joyful challenge, and fitness. We can't wait to come back next year!

I'm a high school teacher in Holyoke and recently brought a group of 18 kids to CRG for a 3-day program. None of our kids had climbed before; by the end of 3 days each student was belay-certified and confident on the wall. The entire experience was phenomenal. Hana helped us set up an incredible program, and the gym's staff executed it perfectly. Each day was so well organized and India, Andrew, Zack, and Josh worked seamlessly and expertly with our kids. They did an amazing job of keeping kids safe, engaged, and excited-- even when their hands were raw and their muscles were shot. Our students are still buzzing about what a fantastic time the had; I suspect our waiting list will be even longer next year!

There is truly something for everybody, from beginner to expert. CRG has experienced and friendly instructors available if you need lessons. They also have a state of the art fitness area with free weights, treadmills and a plethora of other exercise equipment. They even offer outdoor rock climbing excursions for members throughout the warmer months.

We arrived on a sunny afternoon before it started to get busy and were greeted by our most excellent host Hana. Hana keyed us in on the many amenities offered, such as fitness training specifically designed for rock climbers and yoga classes for flexibility and mental strengthening. Walking in to the main gym for the first time was exhilarating. We were confronted with thousands of multi-colored and multi-faceted handholds from floor to ceiling. Children and adults were scrambling up over and under the bouldering wall which stretched the entire length of the gym. The rest of the outer walls were lined with top rope stations of varying degrees of difficulty while the entire middle of the gym was occupied by a giant cave like structure for some serious lead climbing.

If you are looking for a new way to get in shape. If you are looking for something to get your children interested in that is healthy, challenging, and loads of fun, then Central Rock Gym is worth checking out. Be forewarned though. Once you try it, you will be hooked for life.

Have fun and climb on :)
