VIBES: My wife and I love this place. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, especially when you're a new climber. The community is very encouraging and when stuck on a climb, passerby may offer hints or tips like "grab the hold to your left," or "try switching your feet on the foothold." Climbing is such an intimidating activity to get into, but it doesn't feel like other sports where you're being judged as a major noob.
FACILITY: It is very clean and neat here. Restroom is always pretty spotless (though we usually go in the mornings) and theres a place to put climbing shoes outside of the restroom. Feminine products are also available to guests in case of a sudden visit from Mother Nature.
OTHER: There are other board games for kids to do while their parents climb or if theyre burned out. There is also a gym available as well that is included with the membership. Auto belay, top rope and bouldering are available at this branch and it is our go-to when we feel like climbing.

Nice gym with very cool routes for both sport climbing and bouldering. However the route setting is not very inclusive for shorter climbers. Most of the routes are too reachy without alternative foot holds provided and if you don’t like dyno, these are not pleasant to work on. Wouldn’t say it’s a good gym to progress your skills.

There is an incredible amount of dust and large particles in the air at this location. During the evening hours when the sun is shining into the building at the right angle is the only time when you can really see it. It is an extremely thick cloud. I don’t believe they have any air filters in their circulation system. This is a large health concern for me. Every time I go my throat gets extremely scratchy and I have a little trouble breathing and coughing when I leave

This review is an email I sent the manager regarding staff behavior and gym culture:
“Dear Becky,
I’m writing to share some serious feedback regarding my husband Andrew’s experience at the 6:30 p.m. belay class tonight (6/19) with Stacey at CRG Stoneham. Unfortunately, his experience was not only disappointing but, sadly, not surprising based on previous encounters we and others have had at this location.
Andrew shared that the class began before the scheduled time, and he had to be caught up by the instructor. While he appreciated being brought up to speed, it understandably disrupted the flow for others who were already present.
More concerning, however, was the way the instructor, Stacey, conducted the class. Andrew described her as condescending, visibly frustrated, and dismissive—not only toward him but also toward other participants, particularly an older gentleman in the group. After the class, Andrew overheard her at the front desk referring to the learners as “not bright” and “stupid.” This is completely unacceptable behavior from any staff member, let alone someone in a teaching role.
For months, we’ve reached out requesting one-on-one belay instruction—offering to pay whatever was necessary—but were repeatedly directed to group instruction. This situation was entirely preventable had our requests been met with flexibility and an understanding of different learning styles.
Frankly, I’m livid. This isn’t an isolated incident but part of a pattern of poor professionalism and disregard we’ve witnessed at this location over the years. I’ve spent over 15 years in the fitness industry, and one key principle I teach the coaches I mentor is this: if you see bad movement or behavior in your space, you’ve either coached it or allowed it.
Time and again, I’ve seen staff at CRG Stoneham struggle with basic standards of professionalism—respect for clients, time management, spatial awareness, and general courtesy. And I know we’re not the only ones who’ve noticed. The overall culture at this location feels increasingly toxic, and I suspect this stems from a disproportionate focus on advanced climbers and team programs. When too much attention is given to one part of the business, other aspects—like general member experience and facility upkeep—suffer.
A clear example of this is the fitness area, which is consistently dirty and poorly maintained. The floors are covered in dust bunnies, equipment is often misplaced or damaged, and the space lacks the cleanliness and pride that should be standard in any fitness facility.
I sincerely hope this feedback prompts some internal reflection and action—whether that’s staff coaching, improved hiring practices, or an honest investment in gym-wide culture and cleanliness. I know this gym has potential, and there are wonderful staff and members who deserve better.
For transparency, I’ve also posted this feedback to Google Reviews. I’m more than willing to meet and discuss constructive ways to move forward and create a more inclusive and respectful environment for all CRG Stoneham members.”

The gym is okay, but they kept on canceling their classes without any notice. It is quite annoying to head over for the class but it is canceled. This happened to me 3 times out of 5 classes I sign up.

We truly enjoyed our first rock climbing experience—it was even more exciting than we expected! The staff was incredibly friendly, helpful, and made us feel comfortable right away, even as beginners. The facility is well-maintained, with a great variety of climbing walls for all skill levels. It’s not just a workout—it’s a fun and empowering way to challenge yourself both mentally and physically. We can’t wait to come back!

I recently took a lead climbing class with Tom, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the experience. Tom’s approach was calm, clear, and incredibly reassuring. He provided detailed instructions while making sure I felt safe and confident at every step. His expertise was evident, and he took the time to explain techniques thoroughly, ensuring I understood both the climbing and safety aspects. If you are looking for lead certification I would recommend taking the class at Stoneham CRG.

I usually make just 5 star reviews because if I’m not crazy about a place, I don’t bother writing one. But I’m leaving this meh review because we are CRG members and I really wanted to love the nearby Stoneham gym. It’s probably great if you are an advanced climber with climbing partners. And I like that they offered chalk. But other than that it was such a bummer. My 9 year old is on the rec climbing team at a different CRG location so we went to the Stoneham gym because it looked great online. First, I was taken aback that the few auto belays are crowded on top of each other. There are 4 or 5 climbs that aren’t rated - just lots of easy holds including one that is literally a ladder. Awesome for really little kids but that’s it. The other 4 or 5 auto belays, also crammed in that space, are 5.8+ . So nothing in between for progressing beginners. When I was there, about 15 kids and parents were in this tiny area waiting for a turn. Meanwhile the cavernous top rope area was pretty empty. We decided to just boulder, only to see a sign that it was 13+. I had checked their website before coming and it didn’t say that. We wouldn’t have come if we had known. I asked one of the employees if that included kids accompanied by an adult. He was very discouraging about it, saying they didn’t have easy bouldering problems for us. He also said they didn’t let kids go up there because they misbehaved. He would have to get permission from the assistant manager. She said yes immediately, which I appreciate. But then he went over all the bouldering rules, which we know because, again my son is on the rec team, and because anyone who climbs at CRG does an orientation that goes over all those exact same rules. He ended with a warning that we might fall and twist an ankle. It was weird. I get that not everything in the world has to be kid friendly. That’s fine. Some CRG locations are explicitly 13+. But just make that clear rather than make it uncomfortable.

Clean gym, nice staff. A decent amount of bouldering and top role and a good amount of lead. There's a vending machine for snacks and a bubbler for water.
My one area of growth for this gym is the boulder setting. After climbing in Montreal and Germany, the setting here feels a bit boring. It also feels skewed towards tall people, as there have been climbs I couldn't even start. I was surprised that this was more of an issue in American gyms than German gyms considering the average height in Germany is taller! If the boulder setting had a bit more interesting moves and did not have as many morphos it would be 5 stars!

This gym has a warm welcoming community vibe and they several events for queer and female climbers. I’m really happy with my membership at this location.

Top-rope focused gym. There's not many auto-belays, so find a partner and get belay certified to enjoy the full gym. The bouldering grades are quite a bit harder than the Metrorock gyms around.
We were given an orientation on how to use the auto-belays and bouldering walls, which seemed a bit unnecessary since we had all climbed before. We had to wait a long time for the only staff member on duty to take care of everyone at the front desk, just to show us how to clip in.

As a transient climber who has recently made this gym my home gym, it's pretty painful to call it that. Pretty mediocre and would rank it at the bottom 10%. It's a relatively new gym so its facility is in good condition. That's the only thing going for it. The setting which is critical is okay-ish. They do have 1 tension board at least. The overall vibe which makes climbing special is mehhhh. The staff is the worst part of it. A bunch of stuck up and unhelpful lot.

They charged me $14 for a guest pass! This place is clearly not run by climbers anymore, and is now just a corporate profit machine. It's not acceptable to charge for guest passes. They also tried to charge us $10 for a rope. This experience makes me appreciate my home gym of Planet Granite (now Movement) all the more. PG doesn't nickel and dime its members and their guests, and ropes are free!
I've been to a lot of gyms around the country, and the gym itself was average at best. The setting was below average, with some interesting moves, some awkward moves, and a lot of grading inconsistency.

Love that they're running a daycare here during peak hours. Not annoying at all having 30 kids running around and in front of you with no awareness or conception of a queue whatsoever. Maybe the instructors should teach this?
The issue is exacerbated by their claustrophobic bouldering walls that are way too small for the monthly membership fee of $109.
Hey I don't blame the parents either, I'd throw my brats in this daycare too (although they'd probably learn nought seeing the poorly planned fitness programs here; some of the instructors aren't much more adept than the children in climbing ability either, albeit, some are very skilled).
I've been a member for almost a year, but I'll be canceling my membership, and advising colleagues to stay away.
Otherwise, staff seem friendly. Pretty clean, open space.
TLDR; pretty cool daycare center, subpar climbing gym for the price. Avoid.

0 - star for kids program.
I signed up a 2-hour kids program in Central Rock Gym for my 7 year-old via Burlington Reaeration center, which wastes my TIME/ MONEY. It was a terrible experience for me to watch how the program is being run. (Maybe I should have just dropped him off and picked him up after 2 hour so I would never find out what's happening).
From my observation, after 4 lessons, my kid didn't learn anything as a beginner rock climber due to the following reasons:
1) The coach DID NOT TEACH ANYTHING ANYTHING ANYTHING
2) Every time grouping is a myth. My kid (beginner level) was often grouped with kids in way more advanced level, which caused the issue #3 below.
3) The coach DID NOT provide equal opportunity for everyone. Some kids with more advanced skill, they got 30 min practice time during 2 hour session. However, for kids in beginner level, they got only 1 to 3 min practice during the entire 2 hour session.
4) Game time is very long (about 30 min) and the game itself is ridiculous, nothing related to Rock Climbing at all, which is really just wasting time.
My kids have been in Swimming, Tennis, Basketball, Karate, etc other activities in all over the places. This Kids Rock Climbing is the worst program that we have had so far. We will never go back even though I'm going to lose my money for the next 4 sessions.

Clean environment and friendly staff overall. However, some of the climbing teams/classes run around in the bouldering and top rope sections. To be quite honest, I'm questioning how long I'm keeping my membership here. The culture here reeks of elitism and this is confirmed by how they categorize their teams (see photo). Completely unwelcoming.
The bouldering section is almost always jam packed and dominated by the "better" climbers as they crowd and stand around in front of people sitting on the mats waiting their turn. These climbers are rude and visibly annoyed when other climbers have their go.
COVID protocols are lacking as only some folks are wearing masks and social distancing. I wish they'd bring back timed sessions.
Staff can be pretty rude and unprofessional. Regardless of age they need to be putting the safety of others first and whether or not they are clocked in need to realize they are representing the crg name. A photoshoot session during peak hours is not only a nuisance but unfair to the climbers trying to use that wall. Save that for off hours. That staff member needs an attitude check in general.
I often hear overhear other members talking about other gyms and how they'd join those if they were closer and to be fair, they're right. This gym is almost always overrun and packed to the brim. CRG definitely makes enough money to perhaps expand this location and add more bouldering sections.
As someone who has climbed at gyms all over the northeast, this one ranks dead last in use of space, community, and culture. All of which are essential to any rock gym.

I've been climbing for about 6-7 years and climbed at most of the gyms in the Boston Area. This is one of the better ones in my opinion; they cater to the whole gamut of climbers. They have very kid friendly routes, and a super friendly staff that will help outfit the new climber. For the intermediate climber, they have a wide array of climbing grades, with really creative route-setting. Their dedicated bouldering area upstairs is top notch with a wide variety of angles. If you are getting into lead climbing almost all their routes have quick-draws on them, so you can warm up on something easy before getting on the hard overhung stuff. Their workout area has everything you might need to get swole, and they have a yoga studio as well. The community there is still pretty small as it's a relatively new gym, but it's super tight; every time I go there I know at least 4-5 people even if I don't go with my climbing partner.
The only thing you might find a little disappointing about this gym if you're an advanced climber is they don't have a systems board or a moon board. Luckily, as a CRG member you have access to other gyms in the area that do, if that's something you absolutely must have. Even so, you can't really go wrong with this gym. If I could give more stars, I would.

I think the bouldering wall looks different every time I come (but I guess they are new so still setting up?). My other son doesn’t like to climb so just boulders a bit. I was really impressed with the facilities. Even the bathroom seems really well thought out.

Gorgeous facility, equipment is new and well nourished. The staff holds a perfect balance between providing personal space and assistance, leaving you with an unforgettable experience. They have plenty of options for all types of people, from the experts to beginners, members and non-members, and everything in between. Offers a quality, lengthy workout as well as a spacey, social atmosphere. I recommend this gem to anyone seeking a good time.

This is a BEAUTIFUL gym, absolutely top notch facility and I would recommend it to anyone. Friends and I have started going here instead of BKB Somerville because the commute is easier, the parking is easier, and this place attracts a good crowd - but, 4 stars because this place doesn’t open until 10am, leaving BKB the only place to climb in the AM before work.

Wonderful addition for the Central Rock Gym family with tons of top roping and lead climbing. Bouldering area upstairs is filled with fun and puzzling routes, and the walls in the gym are covered in all variety of routes, suiting everyone from the newest climbers to the most seasoned veterans.
