Been a member for over 10 years and sadly things have gone downhill to the point of contemplating cancelling my membership and going to a different gym. In terms of climbing, the top-rope (not including auto-belays) and lead climbs are pretty much the only redeeming aspect now. The gym will probably be good if you are (1) on one of their kids teams, (2) coming with your kids/family, or (3) are relatively new to climbing. If not in one of those categories, they really don't care about you. Instead of addressing the issues, they've actively pushed a lot of their former regulars to other CRG locations (like CRG Cambridge, which has subsequently experienced problems due to their attendance numbers often going beyond usable capacity).

A lot of the issues really started getting to problematic levels once private equity took over significant ownership stakes a few years ago, and their decision making reflects that change in that regular members (i.e. not paying extra fees for kids teams, equipment rentals, etc.) are not valued anymore. Really feels like the vibe/character of the place and a customer's experience in the gym changed dramatically when their business model clearly shifted.

Fantastic climbing gym. Boulders. Top rope. Lead. Auto-belays. Large fitness area. Pretty much anything you’d want in a climbing gym. Oh and a speed wall too.

Went with a buddy. I’ve now been to several CRGs and I like this the best. It’s by far the largest. And remarkably clean for a chalk-filled gym. I guess the HVAC system works very well.

And one cool feature which I’ve pictured. A ramp. Go to the bottom and climb up. Side routes are softer, while the overhung routes are much more difficult. I’ve never seen anything like this in a gym. Very nice.

Hoping to come back here again next time I’m in town.

Outstanding Experience with Brian!

I had the absolute best experience at Central Rock Gym thanks to Brian! He was so kind, friendly, and welcoming, which made the free climbing day a wonderful and stress-free experience for me and my nieces and nephews. We had an amazing time!

Brian was fast, thorough, and very clear when explaining the safety checks, ensuring that everyone felt comfortable and confident. His professionalism and positive energy made the day fun, safe, and enjoyable for all of us.

I highly recommend Brian if you want the best experience for you and your family at Central Rock Gym. We will definitely be back!

Wonderful first experience! I haven't climbed in 12 years and my husband was completely new. Hall helped us get all set up and went over the auto belays, everyone was very friendly and it was clean. Thanks for being an awesome spot we're excited to come back to!!

Great place to go rock climbing, but the problem is that I went to summer camp here for 2 weeks, took belay classes and tests, passed the belay test, but I come here 2 days after camp ends to belay someone on the metal bars course upstairs, I ask for my belay device and they turn me a way because their goofy rule says that you have to be over 13. So what's the point of taking the belay test if you're not going to be able to use the belay systems for another 2 years. And you also can't clip yourself on to the auto belay if you're under 13. πŸ‘Žat least let me take a belay test outside of camp! How infuriating.

Amazing suana, but it’s always off wish they could just turn it on for us to use.

I think the main issue (which I’m not sure is standard across all climbing gyms) was the smell. I’m not sure if it was the shoes. I don’t think the Harvard or Kenmore location have this issue

Having climbed at many gyms in Massachusetts, Colorado and elsewhere in the states, I can say confidently that this gym is a great overall package. It has solid bouldering, lead, top rope and auto-belay options available, and seems like they are constantly resetting parts of the gym, which is greatly appreciated.

The price is right--a membership is more reasonable here than at some other competitors, especially for the value.

The place feels welcoming and inclusive--very friendly and helpful staff. Yes, this is the type of place that draws families on weekends, and yes, children can be a nuisance at times. That said, the staff are doing their best to encourage parents to police their kids, and as a parent myself, I am extremely grateful that this place allows kids to be there and learn early about the joys of climbing.

I am also extremely grateful for the early hours that allow me to climb before work a couple days a week with very few other climbers around. This has been an excellent lifestyle upgrade.

I had a very disappointing experience at this rock climbing gym. The staff was rude and discriminatory, which made me feel extremely uncomfortable. The entire place smelled like sweaty feet, which was really unpleasant. I expected a much more welcoming and clean environment. Definitely not coming back.

I was really hoping to love this place, but the air quality is a major issue. I had heard from another reviewer that the air was polluted, but I didn’t give it much thought. I went there consistently for a month, but one day when the sun was shining through, I could really see how bad the air is. I can’t even imagine how bad it would be for your lungs if you were to go there regularly.

Been climbing here for over ten years and it’s still my favorite gym. Awesome setting, epic lead wall, great facilities, nice staff. Gets super busy in evening but they open up early so it’s possible to avoid crowds. Lisa’s strength classes are killer, I just wish that they had more fitness classes and yoga available. 5/7 perfect gym.

First the good; awesome large facility with a great variety of climbs. Definitely the best gym I’ve been to in this regard. The staff is friendly and the gym and water access is a plus. The bad, is as other reviews have stated, more often than not the gym has been too much like a daycare center/playground than serious environment. It’s tough trying to concentrate on a new difficult problem and hearing kids screaming, fooling around unsupervised and running. For 125 a month, I think the little kid element should be reeled in a lot. Aside from being a major distraction it is potentially dangerous. Perhaps having set hours for young children or set areas of the gym. And more direct supervision. If not for that element, easy 5 stars.

Hardware is overall good. Enough amount of bouldering routes, good top rope and I also see some 5.5 5.6 routes for kids. The only con is the smell in the gym. I was there on a Saturday evening and there's a strong unpleasant smell which made me feel uncomfortable and left after half an hour because of the ordor. I am a CRG member and went to Alewife CRG regularly, also experienced the Stoneham, North station, Fenway and Randolph CRG before and never got this problem. It seems that the ventilation needs improvement here.

Have been going as a member for two years but it is just too expensive for routes to stay up for 5+ months at a time

Kids kids kids EVERYWHERE running around. Watched a kid in an after school program run up to a bouldering wall without looking, fall, kick a guy in the neck/lower head somehow in the process, then run away. Like what??

$42 for a daypass with equipment makes me queasy

This place is a daycare. No other fitness center allows themselves to be filled with unattended children horsing around while hogging equipment from anyone else. Kids running underfoot while everyone is trying to boulder is a safety hazard. Seems like every location is like this, where camps and parents dump kids off. Until staff start doing something, this place is a glorified jungle gym not a climbing gym.

Waisted an hour for my friend to sign me up with a day pass (he was late) only to find out that he can’t use his free pass on me because of some rules nobody explained to me in the beginning. Any other gym would probably let me hang out inside while waiting. After my friend arrived we found out that there is no stuff who can lead certify us, which was the only reason we came climbing to this location. According to them, this is quite common on Friday at 5pm and we should call them in advance. (Stuff was saying that 5 is already too late, we should try to come around 12, like we don’t have day jobs and stuff)

Oh and sauna is not working. Toprop is okay but you probably should come for lead to this location.

Great space for bouldering, top rope, and lead, and strength training. Variety of challenging routes available. Having a long bouldering ramp is unique for indoor climbing gyms. Friendly staff. Can be overcrowded at times. Important to be extra vigilant with your landing areas if unsupervised children are running around. For whatever reason, the treadmills seem to often have issues: being completely broken, powering off randomly, slipping belt, or poorly stabilized.

Awesome time for a beginner!
There IS a military discount! (rented harness and shoes)
After filling out 3 forms (I should have completed ahead of time), stuck to auto-belaying on the 5.4-5.6 walls. Had family to belay on similar walls, and got halfway up 5.7.
Next time may start with Bouldering on VB!
Small detail from seeing my first climbing gym: LOVE the little first aid box that include nail clippers, hair ties, and medical tape (by front counter rental return)!

I first went to here to bring my younger to a climbing class. Loved it so much purchased a monthly family membership for me and my older son. Can’t say enough good things. The staff is incredible. Patient, good humored, clearly love climbing and getting others involved. So many fun auto belays at a wide range of levels as well as endless top rope climbs. Great bouldering areas. Two parts of the gym with exercise machines. Yoga classes and sauna. Just a really nice community vibe. We all love it here. Thank you!!!

Great place for amateur level climbers like myself. I live in NYC and CRG facilities here don’t have belays of any kind, so this is one of few places nearby that offer them. Beware that they don’t provide chalk as part of their rentals and the cost of purchasing on site isn’t cheap.

This is a Chuckee Cheese for rich kids. Despite the huge cost for membership this is a great gym. However the youth programs are out of control. Instructors have no control over their students and I as well as others were stepped on while putting on gear as kids go charging through the changing areas and underneath others actively bouldering. If I’m going to pay rates similar to a CrossFit gym I expect at least a somewhat professional environment.

First off, I love CRG and have been a loyal member for years. Second, under the new management, they have made a lot of essential improvements such as cleanliness, working machines, route setting updates, and more.

As an adult climber who doesn’t always have a partner available for top rope or lead and an injury that somewhat limits my ability to safely boulder because of the inherent impact sometimes associated, I often enjoy auto belay. However, when there are large groups of children enjoying the auto belay area, there seems to be a lack of climbing etiquette enforced by the parents and gym.

Today for example I waited a solid 15-20 minutes for one child to climb the wall for as long as they wanted to without any awareness from the parents that myself and other children were waiting to climb. This seemed to be the case with multiple pairings of children and parents. It’s my belief that the etiquette should be that you climb once, unlatch, and free the wall for another climber, especially if it’s busy. Otherwise someone like myself or another child could be waiting a very long time to climb.

Are the parents and children required to take any sort of orientation that requires etiquette training and if so or if not how is this enforced by the staff of the gym?

I’m all for kids enjoying the gym, I think the programs that CRG offers for children are amazing and CRG accommodates and encourages children climbing. It is a shared space that adults and kids enjoy together, so there needs to be more of a mutual respect that kids don’t necessarily get the priority and need to abide by the same standard as adults. We all pay good money for access to the gym and the lack of awareness and etiquette enforced by parents on children climbing and running has always been an issue. Tough to teach and enforce I know, but it’s a good thing for kids to learn and parents to be aware of. I don’t see staff members monitoring and enforcing this type of change.

Coming from the west coast, I was surprised to see how much more CRG charges for a membership. This location in particular, is damn near impossible to park at most of the time.

Is it really a good idea to allow babies to crawl around on the mats with people climbing above?

Shirts seem to be optional at this location.

I'm not a rock climber, but I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I had a few hours to kill with my 8 year old, so I figured this might be something to do. Three weeks later, I now have a monthly membership and go with my kid 4 days a week. Turns out rock climbing is really fun, who knew? Well, I guess everyone knew.
This place is enormous, and while most of the biggest wall is dedicated to lead climbing, I find that seeing talented strong people do amazing things is inspiring while I struggle up my 5-8 climbs. Also, I know what a "5-8 climb" means, so that's cool. In short, I don't know if other climbing gyms are this good, but boy is this one amazing. The price seems fair, and everyone is friendly and helpful.

This gym has a lot of leading routes, but the equipment is often quite filthy and there are many hard (under graded) routes for bouldering. It seems like they keep having the safety net for competitions or kids or route re-set in the bouldering area which can be quite disruptive to other climbers. It would be much more beneficial if these activities were moved elsewhere so that those looking to boulder could do so without interruption. Some of the ropes appear very worn out which raises concerns about safety standards at this facility. Prices may seem reasonable to some people; however, given all these issues with cleanliness and safety it might not make sense financially either. Check your ropes please!

I mostly tried bouldering. The routes were creatively set and the grades felt harder than other CRG locations. They have walls with fun / dynamic terrain but there's not much slab unless you do top rope. There is a long wooden jug across the top of the bouldering wall for topping out. It leads you to the gym's second floor.

The long overhanging cave-like tunnel along the back set of stairs is a must try forearm pumping machine!! πŸ’ͺ

It's Central Rock Gym's biggest facility, and they use the space well. There's a great variety of climbing. Obviously the huge lead wall in the center is the biggest feature, but there's tons of top rope stations that run the full height of the building, as well as shorter top rope and autobelay stations on the second floor/terrace.

The bouldering area is pretty expansive as well and there seem to be plenty of problems for all levels. I appreciated the near-total coverage with that springy floor and padding.

Membership is only 99/month meaning regular use once or twice a week makes it well worth it. There's workout equipment too, so it's not all just climbing.

Perhaps best of all, it's easier than expected to reach via public transit since the 70 bus runs about a block away which makes it a best to get to from Cambridge!

Having visited all the climbing gyms in the greater Boston area, CRG is by far the best climber's gym. The Watertown location has a top-notch staff, great facilities, and an amazing community of climbers. All routes are set well, there is a wide variety of difficulties and styles, and the routes are reset at a good frequency (~2 months with a new section usually being reset every week or two). The General Manager Kevin knows all the regulars by name and will be the first to greet you at the door and make sure you have the best experience time and time again. I have been a member for over 2 years now, and I've brought numerous friends and family members to CRG Watertown to experience climbing for the 1st or 100th time in the best spot around. I high recommend this and all other CRG locations!

Do not come to this gym. Worcester gym is a lot better. Staff wise and wall wise.
Half of the walls were being reconstructed and out of use.
I asked for the bundle deal so I could get shoes and chalk added. The staff gave me a hard time about not being able to belay even though we did not request to belay that day.
Worse experience coming back here. Worcester is genuine and likes to help people feel safe and welcomed. Not this place.

Great gym, community, route setting. Routes are maybe half a grade easier than Cambridge. Good amiunt of boyldering area, and tons of lead and top rope too. Always see kids/families.

This has been, and continues to be the premier climbing facility in the Boston area. The tall walls make for exceptional lead climbing. There's plenty of bouldering at the Waltham Annex and that's a good added benefit for members.

The routes are really good. The staff is always friendly. The facility is clean (a hallmark of CRG). The terrain is varied and challenging. There's a very nice community vibe.

The numerous CRG facilities in the northeast really make for a great member benefit who can access any of them for free.

I love Central Rock! 5 years ago we happened to be living on Oakland St when we noticed this huge warehouse was being built a few hundred yards away. Little did we know that they were building one of the best indoor gyms in the northeast (and honestly, having been around to some more while living in Colorado, maybe the US)! It's the best! We signed up the first day we were allowed to, so we might have been some of the very first CRG Watertown customers. It was very cool to see them go from a brand new gym to a very popular and successful one over the two years we were climbing consistently at CRG. We moved to Colorado in 2014 from Watertown and the thing we might have missed the most was CRG. What I remember most is that they were constantly improving things - the climbing layout, the gym, the classes, everything. There seemed to be a real ongoing commitment to imrproving the gym that was definitely felt by us climbing there almost every day.

Words can't describe how amazing this place is! The community is so rich with life. I always feel so welcomed and I hope whomever reads this doesn't think twice about stopping by. Special shout out to the amazing staff that Central Rock hires. To list a few:

Special thank you to Alec for finding my wallet the other day. He's always willing to help out and does an awesome job DJing. You'll never lose anything at Central Rock thanks to him.

Special shoutout to Nate for always taking to the time to help improve my climbing. His instruction has helped me conquer some amazing boulder routes.

Lastly, a special shout out to Taylor for always cheering us on whenever she's around.

Looking forward to another eventful day at the gym!

CRG is wonderful. I was introduced to the gym through friends, and loved going and meeting the same regulars every week. The CRG community is half the reason I continued to rock climb regularly - they're awesome. The facility is great as well, and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Most of my friends boulder and I'm more of a top roper, so I've often had staff partners for top roping - each and every one of them have been great. I also had a bit of a financial issue with the gym during my cancellation (most likely self-inflicted), and the staff members I talked to throughout the process were kind, professional, and very helpful. Shoutout to Megan especially for her help over the phone - thank you! I greatly appreciate it, and if I ever return to Boston the first membership I'm resigning up for is with CRG!

Initially, I'd been very disappointed and upset as a CRG employee had asked me to leave because I used a Bowline knot to tie in (on stiff, chalk-laden top ropes, my RA prevents me from undoing "8" knots).
But after my scathing review here, manager Kevin reached out to me and after a couple of demonstrations of the challenges I faced, we found a compromise (8 with a loop clipped on a biner, such that my partner can then undo the knot once I unclip).

MOREOVER, Kevin reached out to the owners (and legal/insurance team) and is working on leading "the charge" amongst rock gyms to get the Bowline accepted and taught.

I have been extremely POSITIVELY IMPRESSED BY KEVIN's dedication to finding the truly BEST techniques for members of the Staff and gym goers. That's as close to climbing crags as gym climbing can get, cause after all "it's all about problem solving" (my friend Javier's quote).
Climb safe, i.e. pay attention (hence, drop the Grigri ;-)
