I wanted to start lifting weights after an injury and to keep from losing muscle mass as I get older. A couple of people recommended their trainer, John, and I’m glad they did. John lets me go at my own pace and runs a friendly gym. It’s almost two years later and I’ve been consistently lifting weights twice a week and am much better off strength-wise thanks to John—so now it’s my turn to recommend him!

John is an excellent trainer who really helped me improve my physical and mental health. John tailors his programming according to the client's needs and creates a welcoming and easy-going atmosphere in his studio. This reflects in the community he has built in his studio which was one of my favorite parts of working with him. Even if I was having a bad day, I knew that I would enjoy going to one of John's group training sessions. This helped me stay on track and did wonders for my fitness.

I have since moved to another state, but have remained in touch with John and will soon be starting virtual training with him. Sure, there are good trainers in my state, but I know that working with John will get me the results I want in a comfortable and familiar setting. I have been working with John for the last few weeks. John does an excellent job listening to what your goals are and effortlessly designing a plan to help meet them.

I have several minor lingering injuries, John took close note of the injuries and gave a list of exercises to target them. After just a week of doing them I noticed my pain has started to go away.

I am also very impressed with his advice on lifting form. After watching me squat once he was able to identify supporting muscles I have been neglecting for years. As someone who has lifted his entire life, I realized I was doing several things wrong that have caused injuries or would cause injuries in the future.

John is truly a professional and great at what he does!!!

I've never been great at physical fitness in the past, and "going to the gym" for me meant hopping on the treadmill or bike for an hour or so. I was lost on all the weights and machines, and didn't really understand what each machine was for or how to use them well. John has really helped me both feel comfortable in a gym setting, as well as understanding how to work out and why I'm doing what I'm doing. I've learned so much in our time so far, and it's really made my life way better and healthier. On top of that John is a lot of fun and has a great approach, helping you push yourself without being pushy, and making workouts rewarding. John Lavoie got me in shape. I can't stress enough how great he is: if he worked for me I can guarantee he'll work for you. I had tried a few other trainers before but none that I ever stuck with for more than a month for a number of reasons...but with John, the months came to really fly by. He learns what you want out of the sessions to truly maximize what you get out of it. He's understanding and flexible with scheduling as well which for me was essential. John is a hardworking, personable, funny, and dedicated wellness professional. I got into the best shape I've ever been in my life with John's help. I signed up for three sessions with John on Groupon and ended up committing to personal training and long term membership at his studio. Some of the things I really about his training style and Studio are-

1) His attention to detail. He focuses on correcting your technique, postures and forms. He is a certified trainer and can guide you and support you well in achieving your fitness goals.
2) Customized Workouts- I train with him for endurance and weight loss
3) Considering the pandemic- Masks are mandatory, temperature measurements are taken when you come in, Disinfectant wipes are available to clean the equipment after and before use
4) Flexibility with schedules- He’s very accommodating with days and times and offers zoom classes as well
5) Professionalism and friendliness and is good with keeping you accountable.
6) Good network/recommendations of PT, Dietician/Nutritionist, Massage therapists etc
7) Well equipped gym
8) Conveniently located at the armory in Somerville with Spacious Parking lot for free parking

He is great at breaking down the movements, and making sure your workouts are effective, safe and fun. The gym is always clean, and he has air filters and requires masks, so I always feel safe when I am there. I've gone to a few different personal trainers in my life, and John is by far the best. He puts a great deal of time & effort to create a personalized routine for you with a nice mix of everything, is highly attentive to your form and needs, and the classes zoom by. And he is punctual + doesn't cancel on you- something I have had to deal with often with others.

I’d always wanted to have a trainer but had been nervous to get in touch with one. Would they judge me? Yell at me like some overcaffeinated jock you see on TV? I've been training with John Lavoie Training for just over a year. When I started, I had no experience with strength training with barbells but my goal was to get stronger. John started me at the beginning teaching me how to dead lift, bench and squat step by step. At first the bar alone seemed heavy, but John is knowledgeable, patient, and a great teacher.
