I've been swimming at this pool for about 4 months. I am aware that children's swimming lessons start at 4 p.m., so I try to get there before 3:30 to get some lap swimming in. Today it was 3:20, I was just about to get in a lane, and one of the swimming instructors puts red cones on almost every lane. The lessons don't start until 4:00. So rude!
They say it's open for lap swimming , but then they close it off 40 minutes before the lessons start. If this keeps happening, I will cancel my membership.

Honestly, I wish I could give them 0 stars. The YMCA after-school program advertises itself as inclusive, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. As soon as a child needs a little more support, the staff start calling parents to pick them up early instead of actually trying to help or use appropriate strategies.
My autistic son was having a difficult time adjusting, so I reached out to their “inclusion specialist” hoping for understanding and guidance. The very next day, the supervisor called me to pick him up because he was “running,” saying it wasn’t safe — yet they thought it was safe to release my son to someone not listed on his release form, without checking ID or even asking who they were. Thankfully, it was someone I trusted, but that was an extremely unsafe and unacceptable situation.
When I spoke with the supervisor, it wasn’t just about that incident — it was about the ongoing pattern of them calling me almost every single day to pick my son up early. I explained that I work full-time and that these constant calls were putting my job at risk. I also tried to share what actually helps my son calm down and how to support him, since I work with children myself and understand behavior management. I even said that running is normal kid behavior — it’s part of being a child, especially after a long day at school.
Instead of listening, the supervisor dismissed me and said, “Your input is not helpful” and that he “didn’t have time to talk.” I told him the staff need to do their jobs — because that’s what they were hired to do — and if they’re not passionate about helping and caring for children, maybe they’re in the wrong field. As I went to leave, he made a rude comment: “I hope you know he probably won’t be able to return to the program,” and walked away.
To make matters worse, I’ve spoken with three other families who experienced the exact same thing. Their children were also removed from the YMCA for completely typical kid behavior. This shows a clear pattern — they are not inclusive, and they are not willing to work with children who need even the smallest bit of extra care or patience.
On top of that, the YMCA does not notify EEC (the Department of Early Education and Care) when a child is being sent home early or is placed on what they call a “pause in care.” That means they continue getting paid for children who are not even attending the program — which is completely unethical and possibly a violation of EEC policy. My own child has been on a “pause in care” officially since October 1 (they didn't not accept my son for 3 days before this "pause in care") and I have yet to receive any update from the program.
This program is the opposite of inclusive. It’s unsafe, unprofessional, and dishonest. Parents deserve better, and children — especially those with different needs — deserve patience, compassion, and staff who actually care.

Being at your location today for the first time this year, I was very disappointed to find that there was no green-cone lane in the pool for public/open swim. The small pool was closed for swimming lessons, and the large pool was taken up with private lanes and more lessons.
You have two pools and eight swim lanes, yet not even one was left available for open swim. That’s unreasonable. There should always be at least one lane designated for open swim at all times. The current setup makes no sense, and it feels unfair to members who come expecting regular access. This needs to be addressed and made a rule moving forward.

High ceilings and natural light..are a tremendous plus. The young man who runs the operation on the second floor, Jeff Hunt, is friendly, helpful, smiling. I left another facility in Marblehead some years ago because of an arrogant young man who had a similar job there. I've never regretted it. Jeff is a real plus.
I also appreciated the finesse and flexibility with which the Y handled the pandemic. Good job!
A minor complaint...years ago I also belonged to another facility in Salem. It was low-ceilinged and dark but, just as irritating, there were a lot of the macho guys who had a habit of crashing weights to the floor. It was loud and disturbing. It had to do with their youthful self-centeredness, of course, but that practice has been absent from the Lynch-Van Otterloo...until recently. It is a practice that is unnecessary, damaging to the facility and the equipment, as well as being an imposition on others who want to go quietly about lengthening their useful lives by focused attention to the health of their bodies.

EDITED TO ADD: To date 7/17, the business has not responded to my request for communication. Besides their faulty and deceptive advertisement practices and no communication about pool rules, they have numerous ADA legal violations. This YMCA also took pictures of my child without my consent or knowledge and have used those pictures for advertisement, also without my consent. This has already been reported this already has been reported to the attorney general, district attorney, ADA.gov, and various other organizations. They claim to be inclusive but can not bother to hire and train staff in ADA compliance. Not to mention, photos of a minor for advertisement without written consent from parent is illegal. "Rude staff" is an understatement- the manager outright called me a B.I.T.C.H within earshot of my child. The YMCA has not addressed it. We will never return to this branch. Do better.
Very disappointed with how things were handled today at the Marblehead YMCA. All last summer and even this past week, our kids were allowed to go down the slide without issue. Suddenly today (July 13 2025 around 1:30 PM), we were told our daughter couldn’t use the slide without passing a swim test — something we were never informed about, and something that’s not listed anywhere online.
What’s worse is that the rules seem to change depending on which lifeguard is working since the next switch if lifeguard suddenly didn’t say anything about a swim test. When I asked for a full list of pool rules (just like I previously asked for slide/indoor pool hours), no one — not the lifeguards or front desk staff — could give me any answers: they also didn’t know when the indoor pool/slides were open.
The so-called “manager” on duty refused to give her name, was incredibly rude, and wouldn’t explain why the rules had changed or where I could even find them. Her only explanation was, “New year, new rules.” That’s not an acceptable. She was extremely rude, unprofessional and condescending.
For the record, I even called in June to ask specifically about the indoor slide and was told nothing about swim tests or new restrictions. Again, last summer and last week, the policy was a parent would need to be in the water. We had a parent in the pool.
YMCA members deserve consistency, transparency, and basic respect. Right now, that’s not what we’re getting at the Marblehead location. I will also add- I have gone to at least ten additional YMCA locations throughout and never experience this level of inconsistency and rudeness. I’d suggest to skip this one and travel to other local locations.

Great teachers & classes are one reason. A good variety and frequency of classes are another. Great humans (both working & being members) at LVO Y who are kind, welcoming & accepting. * Nice facilities. Fabulous hours. Dario’s healthy eating. *My neurodiverse young adult was keen to do classes and the kindness and support she has received from teachers, fellow class participants & (nearly) all at the Y, in addition to classes she has such fun in, keep her wanting to return. A special thanks to Lisa for frequent fun dance classes along with warm greetings (and full acceptance of wherever participants are in their capabilities to follow along), Tania’s fabulous energy & smile during her super enjoyable water aerobics classes, and all the welcoming & kind participants in both these classes. As a mom, I’m so grateful my daughter feels so comfortable & accepted at the LVO Y that she wants to keep coming! Also, my college student comes and lifts and uses the cardio machines with friends and I am similarly grateful for the whole space the Y provides. (Having come here for a variety of programs starting w baby swim no doubt has something to do w them coming!) Thank you to YMCA staff, the Lynch & Van Oterloo families, the board, and all members who make the LVO Y so welcoming & accepting.

Pros: it’s clean, equipment is new, and everyone is incredibly pleasant who works here.
Joined this gym very optimistic. However, I’m canceling because it’s far too busy to get a workout in. I gave it a week and tried different times (between 7am-10am)… always overcrowded to a point where I’ve left. I’ve been working out for many years and have been to many gyms around the state and have never experienced this amount of overcrowding. The strength training area just cannot accommodate the amount of members here.

I am completely in shock with the behavior portrayed by a ymca staff member tonight.
I have been a ymca member since I was about 13 years old.
And I’ve never observed the disrespect and racist behavior that went on tonight.
I am completely upset and disappointed with the YMCA staff member that I had to encounter today.
Super upset to witness my dear friend Jorge be embarrassed and treated so poorly as well from the staff member and parent who he was trying to speak to.
Just because someone is a little tan with an accent doesn’t mean you should completely ignore what they have to say.
Sad day.
I have all the information and about 20 witnesses that would love to speak to management if they ever see this.

Children's Island is an awesome experience for the kids and unlike any other camp. To venture out on the ocean and spend a day in complete freedom, jumping off piers, tubing, shooting arrows, swimming and being goofy is the epitome of childhood and of summer camp. This was a great week of camp for our son, in the Rangers program. It was a treat to take a boat to the island each day. Besides during one very rainy day, they were able to participate in so many fun activities on the island. Our son liked the counselors and CITs too. Communication before the camp was very good, and everything seemed to be quite organized. We'll sign him up again for next summer.

Fix how when you’re from another ymca you have to manually type in your card on the iPad or have to hand your card to a staff to pass through, then scan it then open the door. Had the caucasian young lady (brown hair/sometimes wears make up that’s slightly unordinary) with the big chest give me a hard time about me having to ask her to let me in, and she snatched my card out my hand then forced it into my hand I didn’t like the disrespect and wouldn’t like an interaction like that again. Amazing pool though and the gym upstairs looks stacked . They even have a place you can buy food. And they’re hiring. The food place. And fix the family bathrooms and the men’s bathrooms. Some showers in the family showers water doesn’t drain while you’re showering and it’s gross.

Great place, program(s). I've been going to the Y for, well, most of my life, off and on. (Currently: On!) For swimming (birthday suit for a long time!) to weights-and-workouts.
I've been to various Ys, beginning as a kid in Orange, CA (Anybody remember the "Y Indian Guides"?) in the '50's, to this one - AND the Central Sq., Cambridge, MA Y, ever since I moved to Massachusetts in 1976.

To be honest, I am ready to fill out a weekly review and provide my feedback on how amazing our experience is since we have started the extended program. Every single staff member I have met so far is amazing, kind and professional. Always open to discuss and answer any questions. Teachers- confident and absolutely amazing! Administration- the best, they are willing to help and are very responsive to any inquiries. My child loves the YMCA extended program, she is happy to go every day and is actually happy when she is the last one to be picked up! We are looking forward to the Seal Pups Camp this summer and are grateful for everything you do!

We love everything about the LVO YMCA - we are there 7 days a week because our kids are in ELC and then we do gymnastics/swimming/kids club on Saturday and back to Kids club on Sunday. Our life would be very different without it!

Way over crowed with poeple who are just here to hang out on the machines. Constantly phones out and TicToc videos being made. Zero parking.

Never any parking. Lots of hang arounders. They want you to join and not come because its too busy. That's why there's no reasonable member cap. Frequent middle schoolers on the workout floor.

We be love the y. It’s really is the most bang for your buck around. We just have to get to be able to use it more.
