I've climbed at several gyms in Mass, NH, and Maine and this is my favorite one by far. The variety of bouldering options is unmatched. There were overhangs, a comp wall ,and even a crack line , which is rare for bouldering. I climb at V4 -5 level at best and you could tell the route setters were good because of how each route played to different styles. They don't just throw holds at the wall and attach a random grade. If I lived closer I'd definitely be a member.

Unfortunately thanks to the condescending, socially inept human being that βhelpedβ us today, I will never be returning here with my kids. We have been here over a dozen times with no issues, yet he managed to make both the adults and children in our group feel uncomfortable. The manager was helpful and understanding but unless the support staff learns how to appropriately interact with people, do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere.

This place is amazing! I have always wanted to go rock climbing, but could never find a good place to try out. One day I decided to just roll with this one, which did not disappoint. It's very clean. The staff were nice and friendly and walked us through how to set up the auto buylaes(don't know how to spell that). Their courses change every so often. It keeps things more exciting. If you want to start rock climbing then this is a great place to start!

Small gym, short top ropes, old slick holds, the sets are ok but nothing inspiring. Expensive for what the gym has. I also think that their no teaching belay policy is just a money grab. Staff was nice though and I was desperate to climb while travelling so it scratched that itch.

Had a wonderful experience with MetroRock after hosting my sonβs birthday party there! Friendly and helpful staff! Highly recommend for parties or small groups! The price is definitely reasonable and worth it

If you're planning on going to this gym less than two hours before it's scheduled to close, you might want to call them up to make sure they're still open. Twice now I've showed up at the gym hours before it's supposed to be closed, only for a staff member to tell me that they've closed early. I've looked around and haven't found any mention of them closing early, including their email newsletter I subscribe to. I'll gladly update this review if an employee can point out where this was mentioned for today.
I put up with a lot of things, but wasting my time is not one of them.

While walking along Salsbury Beach, I noticed the large windmill marking the location of this gym. It was a long swim through the ocean. However, the walk was long enough to allow me to thoroughly dry off. Once I got into the gym, I found a plethora of wonderfully graded climbs inside! The staff was very friendly and kindly wished me well on my adventures back to my car, parked at Salisbury Beach!

I'd like to be able to give this gym a higher rating - it's a great space with awesome route setting, and I know there are a lot of nice people there who genuinely care about the sport of climbing and making the gym a nice place to be. But as someone who goes here regularly I just can't, and do have to agree with some of the other reviews that have been left.
Members come last at this gym - youth teams, after school classes, and birthday parties, are given absolute priority. Especially on the weekends the gym is mainly used as a family fun center, with no consideration for anyone who is there to actually try and climb. The main issue though is safety - I've been at this gym on many an occasion, particularly on weekends, when huge numbers of kids have been running, unsupervised, throughout the entire gym, screaming and throwing themselves onto the mats and walls, often directly below climbers. It can be complete chaos, and very much feels like a Chuck-E-Cheese. Unfortunately, while this is happening, it seems staff are never anywhere to be found.
Despite the great space and route setting, for anyone looking to get in a serious climbing session it can be really hard to do so here.

Friendly staff, good variety of routes that are fairly rated. New routes pop up every three weeks or so, so if you climb often you may run out of new routes in your level. Can get crowded as there are often kids classes or group nights (would recommend avoiding "guys night" on Wednesdays).
I really like this gym when it's not too crowded but I do have a similar complaint to some of the other reviewers. I've been going biweekly for probably two months now and usually there's like one or two people in the way of the top roping walls. They'll move if you ask but I shouldn't have to. However, yesterday there was a huge crowd of boulderers blocking like a fourth of the available top roping routes. Even worse, a coach/staff member was blocking a few routes in another spot having a meeting while sitting under a top rope wall! I know we are uncommon and most people autobelay or boulder, but it just comes off as really rude especially when they can clearly see us trying to climb. Wish they would enforce climbing etiquette more.

I have to, unfortunately, second John Smith's review. As a top-roper I feel like a second class citizen here. Large groups of teen boulderers are often sitting on the floor, blocking top-rope routes. They put all of their stuff (shoes, bags, phone, etc) on the floor in the top-rope section, while the boulder area is completely clean and free of people. If I set my stuff up under the boulder routes I'm sure they wouldn't like it. While belaying or climbing I often have children climbing across the top-rope walls (with no gear) either under or even in front of me while I'm tied in. Incredible. Adults appear to be supervising them but do nothing.

I am a regular at this gym and I hate it. The only reason I climb here is because the next closest gym to me is 45 minutes away. Here's why Metrorock newburyport is a terrible gym.
The place is way too expensive. I pay $100 a month for a reoccurring membership and what does that get me? I get to climb in what feels like a Chuck E Cheese. The gym is constantly full of barely supervised children running around. Even early afternoon on weekdays the gym has a bunch of annoying kids in it.
The route setting is pretty mediocre and the gym caters to youth climbing so many routes are very awkward for adult climbers. The walls are short, and they have little variety in the holds they use. The gym itself is very small so it feels really busy even if it isn't.
Metrorock is a climbing gym that caters to families with young kids and it very much feels like adult climbers are simply tolerated. If another climbing gym opened up reasonably close by I would cancel my membership here in a heartbeat and never come back. I might just cancel my membership and hangboard until spring anyways. $100 dollars a month is starting to feel like a rip off for this place.

Great indoor rock climbing gym, a little small but the other chains located in massachusetts offer a much larger space and more challenging walls to climb. This location is great for friends and family to hangout at, there's also a brewery right next store! ;) The staff is very knowledgable and helpful to climbers of all experiences. Highly recommend taking the intro to climbing course as it also comes with a 10 day pass to the gyms and the course gives you a great overview of how to prepare for climbing out on your own.

The roped sections are only about 10m high, and the ropes are too short to adequately tie their required tie in knot plus backup plus safety knot at belay end. Asked about belay test, they said they didn't have one...then I read a sign and they do require one. Asked again...then waited and waited for someone to test us, who of course tried to tell us he knew way more than us. Route grading is way off and inconsistent. Also the most expensive gym I've ever been to.

Incredible!
This place "rocks". So far this is the best rock gym I have been to in the North Shore/Eastern Mass region. I brought my 7 year old daughter and within minutes she was climbing an excellent variety of walls. There are several walls for kids to do with auto-belays and a huge bouldering section. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the overall atmosphere in this gym is fantastic! You can feel the love for the sport that the climbers have and the vibe of the gym is amazing. Love this place!

Decent gym, could be more top-rope/ lead climbing focused and many of the holds used on those areas are not good. However they do offer great route setting. Just get some new non-spray-painted holes and I'll be back.

My daughter (8) goes weekly as part of an after school program. She loves it. Great facility, amazing people, and solid instruction which translated into a successful outdoor climb this summer. Doesn't hurt that there is a great brewery/tasting room right next door.

Definitely geared towards the advanced climber, but still offers a number of entry level problems. As of 08/18 the gym is comprised of mostly bouldering area. If you're not interested in a membership, the best value is the bouldering day pass (includes bouldering and auto-belay area. About only 10 top-rope stations set up currently. Friendly and helpful environment, right next door to a brewery which is cool.

6 STARS!!! We had an epic family day at Sunday open climb.... This is a great place for kids and adults who are not athletic, or for a family that wants to do something together. You have to encourage each other and it really builds cohesion The equipment and walls and staff are top-notch!

I love that it's fun for me and fun for my son. In a couple times per week to climb and for yoga. There's a schedule they follow for resetting walls that always keeps it fresh, while still letting you work on a project for up to a month before a reset.

Great local gym, came to town to visit family and was really happy to get some climbing in. The setting is diverse in style and a wide range of difficulties. I found everyone I talked with to be incredibly friendly and helpful with beta. Definitely will come back every time I'm in town.

Very open and roomy gym that has never been crowded when I am there. The staff is young and overall pretty easy going and nice. The bouldering walls are awesome and have plenty of variety, they are also changed about every 3 weeks or so which gives you plenty of time to come back and get the route you were stuck on or get some new features if you've hit them all before. The top-rope walls are nice looking too although I've never personally used them besides trying to boulder the horizontal stretch of the facility. Not really sure what sort of experience Devin^ had but I got as often as I can.

staff is young and friendly, rules are all fair and understandable. Price is cheap, and the facility is large with plenty of free climbing. Unless you have passed their test to belay, renting a harness (an extra fee) nets you access to a small handful of auto ropes. You're honestly better off paying standard fees for the free climbing if you're not certified or you don't care for the novelty of climbing with ropes. Lots of fun - definitely would go again!
