If you enjoy crashing out every time you’re at the gym…then this one is for you!!!!
I’ve tried to be really patient as the gym goes through recent transitions, but it’s gotten to a point where every single workout at this gym is frustrating. I’ve been lifting over 10 years, and I’m a trainer and a bodybuilder so usually my lift is the highlight of my day. But the recent changes have absolutely ruined that. I dread coming to this location now and every workout is frustrating—and I know my friends who also come to this location feel the same way.
The advertisement of the shift to “newer equipment” was so misleading because some great pieces were replaced with cheaper machines that don’t work as well, or are even completely unusable. They’re not made for anyone under 5’8” (for reference, I’m 5’4”—so average height) without spending a bunch of extra time finding extra equipment to modify machines to be passable. And, the grips on the equipment are pretty much all too large or the rubber just spins around so can’t actually get a good grip.
Not to mention that it’s now way overcrowded due to cramming DTX and Gov Center members all in one space.
This has gotten to a point where I have joined a second gym outside the city to go to on the weekends just so I can get a decent lift in. However, I’d like to have a decent gym in the city so I don’t always have to make that drive. I’d quit if I didn’t need something to get by that’s convenient to my apartment.
Next time they “update” the gym, they should consult someone who actually knows what they’re doing and knows gym equipment enough to not replace everything with cheap hotel-gym-grade equipment.

Maria at the front desk working 9/5 at 7 am would not allow me to use the free pass that is advertised all over the NYSC websites. I filled out a form online before coming and she would not honor it. Continuously telling me I had to pay $30 in order to use the gym. Either educate your employees on policy or don’t do false advertising.

I just canceled my membership after being there for about two years. Almost all of the people who work there are the best. They are so nice and friendly and that is what kept me going. I typically get there close to opening time and sometimes (typically on weekends and typically one specific worker), no one will be there to open at 7am so there’s a group of us waiting for up to an hour outside (happened today again). Otherwise it’s a good place with good equipment and a good sauna.

One of the top BSC, sorry now NYSC locations I’ve ever been in the last 8 years in the Boston area. Plenty of weights, gym equipment and lots of space that all other clubs seem to be missing. And also clean and well kept. At last safety lockers that cannot be broken in with a single kick, clean showers with toiletries (hear that Boylston?). Helpful and friendly people at the front desk and cool people working out over all. Does it have negatives? Yes, some showers need plumbing and also a bit labyrinthine but for the pleasure of being able to workout and breath in a clean space it’s worth paying a visit.
Update: October 2024. Unfortunately I have to drop my rating to 2 stars as the condition of the gym deteriorated very much in the past few months. The locker rooms are dirty, many doors are missing (broken in?), several showers are broken, others are full of trash and underwear left behind. There are no hairdryers and nobody cared to replace them (supposedly they are getting stolen).
The gym area is no better. The A/C in the top floor is broken, on a warm day like today it is impossible to use the treadmills, the air is so stuffy. The water cooler near the weight area has been broken for months.
I am so disappointed to see my favorite gym location in such bad shape. The staff is always nice and friendly but the management should step up to the plate and take action very soon.

I’ve had an awesome experience at this gym! I did personal training to help me get active again and my trainer also helped me with my nutrition. I was later interested in kickboxing and my trainer was more than happy to accommodate/ update my workout program. I’ve lost weight and my stamina has improved significantly. I definitely recommend this gym to anyone! You won’t be disappointed 🙂

This is my favorite BSC in Boston because the staff is so friendly and smiling. It's not a very busy salon. But there is a lot missing in the hall. You can be a little more careful about cleaning. It has old sports equipment and is missing a lot of equipment. Still, I love this place and the people who come here. Thank you for the service.

Cannot believe that BSC Westborough and BSC Government Center are the same company. There’s no comparison. Westborough has far more equipment variety and it’s in good shape. Government Center is outdated, overused, crowded, and equipment is in terrible shape.

I regret to express my profound disappointment with the state of the gym's facilities and services. It is disheartening to note the myriad shortcomings that have accumulated, presenting an unfavorable image of the establishment. The removal of a substantial portion of strength equipment without replacement speaks volumes about the disregard for the varied needs of patrons. This sentiment is further exacerbated by the conspicuous absence of functional cable machines, rendering diverse workout routines nearly impossible.
The perilous state of the remaining equipment cannot be ignored. The antiquated machines, a significant portion of which appear unsafe for use, jeopardize the well-being of gym-goers. The disrepair of free weights, marred by rust, symbolizes a lack of dedication to even the most basic upkeep. Such negligence is further mirrored in the lack of air conditioning on the basement level, making exercise in that space an uncomfortable ordeal.
Hygiene, a cornerstone of any fitness environment, has been woefully disregarded. The absence of equipment wipes paired with the repeated failure of patrons to sanitize equipment paints an unsanitary and uninviting picture. The presence of broken lockers within the locker rooms casts a shadow over the facility's commitment to maintaining functional amenities. The leaks during rainy weather not only reveal infrastructural weaknesses but also raise concerns about mold growth, compromising the well-being of those who use the facilities.
Furthermore, the restrictive operating hours on weekends and the outright refusal to accept cash payments reflect a disconnect from the preferences and convenience of the clientele. The removal of the arc trainers, a valuable piece of cardio equipment, underscores a lack of understanding of the diverse workout needs of members. The prevalence of unresolved defects in the cardio equipment and the absence of quality control measures cast doubt on the sincerity of management's commitment to the safety and satisfaction of members.
In light of these myriad grievances, I am left contemplating the necessity of involving a safety inspector to assess the integrity of the equipment and the overall environment. The actions—or lack thereof—taken by the company to address these concerns are emblematic of a wider failure to uphold the standards and expectations one would reasonably hold for a reputable gym.
In conclusion, the overall experience at the gym falls far short of expectations, fostering an environment of disappointment and frustration among patrons. It is my sincere hope that these issues will be acknowledged and rectified, allowing the establishment to regain its credibility and provide a safe and satisfactory fitness environment for all its members.
Update: why did you guys disable the AC upstairs in the cardio area!?! This is a dangerous practice. The condensation flowing down the windows should be enough evidence that the airflow up here is not sufficient

I was really looking for a gym to go to for a day. I was looking to just pay a day pass and have a nice workout. I tried going to two other places and they were hard to find and/or required a weird subscription program. However at New York sports club I walked in and paid a very reasonable price and got exactly what I wanted. The costumer service was also great from the lady in the front desk. I will be back!

Pretty mediocre compared to other BSC locations. The layout is a labyrinth and often crowded, even during off hours. There are never towels it seems. The men's sauna is spacious but not as hot as other locations. The equipment is perfectly fine, though there are newer machine at other locations (such as DTX). Really the only reason I come is because they have later weekend hours than other branches.

I joined this gym three months ago. During this time, I have been trying to persuade my colleagues and friends to workout with me, two of them came to see and felt too crowded here and didn't want to join, only one friend came with me about three times, and she paid $15 for each visit. Yesterday my girlfriend went with me and wanted to see how I workout, a woman came to warm me that if I kept bringing new people in and showing them my workout routine, she would cancel my membership. I got shocked. Did I do anything wrong??? I just tried to persuade my friends to work out here. I feel sorry for the woman who claimed I bring people and train them here. I have a very decent job which is 1 minutes walk from the gym, and I don't need to make my living by training my friends here. I feel very disappointed! I used to go Gymit, which was half price of here, and able to bring a free guest EVERY Friday and Saturday. If not because of the location close to my workplace, I would never workout here again.

Under new management but same old games being played by this gym. I was told that if I cancel before the 15th of the month, I would not be charged any yearly maintenance fee. I cancelled on the 14th of the month and the manager tells me that I was supposed to cancel on the 1st of the month and not the 15th. I ask them to make an exception and refund my $70 since I was told to cancel by a certain date and followed those instructions, and was denied my refund of that maintenance fee. This gym will never change its ways, always some sly games going on with them. Pick a different gym to avoid the headache of the management and horrible music being played.

This has been my favorite BSC for a while, and the only one I have gone to during the COVID-19 pandemic.
It's made up of several different areas on three levels. Some may find it cramped, but I find it cuts down on noise and offers a nice variety of atmosphere and equipment.
I've never noticed any major issues with cleanliness or maintenance, aside from the odd broken machine or locker door that all gyms have. I particularly like the turf area and the "secret" upstairs room which is always quieter than the rest of the gym.

After freezing my account on early early April and requesting a cancellation I was charged again within minutes of gyms reopening however in their website it states gyms are all closed and when you call the gym it just rings then the corporate office number just hangs up on you. DO NOT GO HERE. Worst gym experience I have ever had, hands-down. The club shutdown in mid-March due to covid-19. I was still charged for all of March and April, and was given no option to cancel my membership, and their phone line was updated to an automated response, with no option to leave a message before hanging up. Upon their reopening in July, I called (and received confirmation) that my account was put on hold as I was not yet comfortable returning to the gym. However, after numerous calls and emails, I STILL have not been refunded for March, April, or July, and am now being charged a seemingly random amount for August. Each time I call, the employees state that they are working on it and need to "reprocess refund requests" or update their billing info, and tell me to call back in 72 hours, I have no idea how else to stop these charges from accruing. I am unable to cancel without showing up in person, paying an extra month, as well as paying additional fees. Ridiculous policies, and terrible service.

#1: Terrible Management
Tried to upgrade my membership so I could go to all the locations in Boston. Submitted the request TWICE (IN PERSON) (TO A MANAGER) and never went into effect because they had “no record of the request”.
#2: Unusably Dirty Locker Rooms
Pretty self explanatory, and I grew up on a farm so my tolerance is high for that kind of thing.
#3: Small to the point you can’t even move around, not even only during peak hours (Government Center Location).
#4: 45 day cancellation fee (even for month-to-month memberships), and a cancellation fee. Cancellations must be submitted in writing, but given my track record of submitting documentation to them and having them pretend it doesn’t exist, they’re basically holding my money hostage.
Avoid this gym at all costs. Go to equinox, they’re 3 times the price but they don’t play games with their customers. I’m in the process of taking legal action against BSCs parent company.

Becareful of cancelling your membership. You need to give a 45 day notice and must come in person. I was out of state for a few months and they said their was no way to cancel if I couldn’t come in. Later they said I could send a certified letter which was still a hassle.
Most of the staff I spoke to was very friendly however there are some that give false information. I asked to put my membership on hold for a month and the women on the phone said it’s fine, and then I ended up getting charged the full price for the month. After calling again I found out you need to tell them on the first of the month (I called the 2nd) but the first women never mentioned any of that to me. They also don’t do any type of refunds. All they can do is credit your account which doesn’t help since I’m cancelling my membership.

Like many people with questionable (read: non-existent) fitness habits, I started off 2018 by buying a gym membership. I had some idea of how to use the treadmill and the bike, but anything beyond cardio equipment was a little intimidating. One of the gym managers suggested personal training, so I signed up for a few sessions with Roxy Hesh. Roxy is the best trainer a beginner like me could ask for – patient, thorough, and supportive of my fitness goals. She always managed to strike the perfect balance between pushing me to work harder, and easing off to keep me from over-exerting myself. Our workouts were always planned in advance, and she even sent me the workouts afterwards so I don’t forget what we did. I highly recommend Roxy to anyone who is new to fitness and is looking for guidance!

So the worst part to any gym, are the trainers. Any regular can tell you that, but at this gym they are particularly obnoxious. These people, who train out of shape or over the hill clients and who overcharge to do so, have recently decided that they need to be more annoying than normal. Specifically when the gym is at its busiest they reserve multiple benches or sets of weights, for a single client. I have personally seen this multiple times from multiple trainers. This strategy makes the fairly cramped basement gym feel even smaller. People who are just trying to get through their workouts are now having to wait longer because the trainers think that they are special.

Avoid this place like the plague. Machines are always broken, extremely dirty if they are working, TVs have about 6 channels but usually aren't even working to begin with. Don't bother notifying the employees of any issues as they will not care. There is no corporate customer service either, so you are completely on your own.
There are more employees working behind the desk or in offices trying to get more customers to sign up and pay a monthly fee than there are to clean the equipment or perform any general maintenance. Membership contracts are shady, with many different clauses all geared towards keeping you paying your monthly fee at all costs.
Overall, I can't emphasize how terrible of a customer experience I've had at BSC, and if you join the club after reading this review I have pity on your soul.

- They will charge you for everything they possibly can - even 30 days after you cancel. Pricing deals are specifically to generate new leads as people realize there are better options
- customer loyalty is exploited rather than celebrated - you may find others are paying less than half of what you do based on the time of year they sign up.
- Contracts are inflexible, Unaccommodating,
- Had two issues with billing and collections where they had been double charging me for 4 months. It took me half a year to get money back.
In short , Keep shopping. Liars and thieves.

Here's what happened... I was a Washington Sports Club member under a month to month plan before relocating to Boston. I transferred my membership to the Wayland, MA club without a problem. There's a BSC directly across the street from work, so I thought it'd be useful to have a Passport membership because my commute was so long that it might be useful to use the Government Center location. So I requested an upgrade from someone who just so happened to be the general manager (Jay Harihar or something). Of course he was happy to oblige. Then, my daughter was born, and I realized that a regular gym membership would be useless. So, being on a month to month membership, I asked to cancel. I was told that my upgrade enrolled me into a one year commitment, cancelation of which would cost me $99.95. I asked to see where I signed that agreement. They printed a contract with the GM's name on it, which did not however, have my signature on it. They still refused to cancel my membership without the fee. Also the Government Center location stinks and the cardio equipment often doesn't work properly.

It would be nice if they opened earlier than 6am. Other BSCs open at 530am. That half hour can make a real difference for some people. Other than that, no complaints.

It's your typical money hungry gym that will squeeze every cent out of you that they can. Besides that the amenities are questionable. The sauna is rarely in functioning condition while the showers are grimy. The gym is extremely packed from 5pm - 8:30pm and the lack of weight lifting equipment becomes a serious factor at that time. If you can make it in after the rush you have until 10pm (employees start asking you to leave around 9:45pm) to get in a good workout. If you live around the North End or Government Center area I would seriously suggest that you go out of your way to find another gym even if it is not in such a convenient location as BSC.

Good gym, but they really do need more space, which is very tough in Downtown Boston. This BSC services many of the Beacon Hill residents and Government empolyees. I've never been to a Gym so Jam packed at 6a, it goes through a earie empty lull right at 8:15a. Staff is friendly though! and the place is reletively clean.

This club is over crowded and unclean.
1. They added a TRX turf section to make the weight areas even more crowded. I go to this BSC 6 times a week, and it was already crowded before they added this (as well as before the new years rush). It was already rough in the weight lifting areas, but now they are so densely packed I fear injury during a set from someone running into me or my weights. They constantly member drive for an already overpopulated gym, expand the space (consider getting rid of a studio or bicycle room and combining them into a single space). The also eliminated a whole section of weight training machines in the 2nd floor, causing more beginners to flood to the areas where they lack experience and have any idea what to do.
2. The bathroom and floor is constantly unclean.
a. The bathroom is almost always out of paper towels and in complete disarray.
b. There are dust and dirt everywhere, and not once have I seen the cleaning crew attempting to rectify this
3. The money for upkeep of the facility is being poorly implemented. Rather then updating equipment (both weight and cardiovascular, which are old and in disrepair) there was a new unnecessary paint job, shower "upgrade", and the aformentioned TRX turf area (meanwhile the lockers were also left in awful condition).
4. If you need a trainer, make sure to go to Bron. He is the only trainer in relatively good shape and has any clue what he is doing. (note they have an entire new training staff, unable to retain previous other good trainers who have all left I assume to poor management and the afformentioned space issues).
One final note on the TRX turf area. I am not against it being put it, just the fact there is a lack of space for it in this particular BSC. I frequent the BSC in Westborough, where they have a lot more space and less over member crowding where it works. Also, when I questioned the Customer service manager about it, he lied and said there were 0 complaints and everyone loved it, while on the weight floor not one member was heard not complaining about it.
Your options are limited in the Boston downtown area, but I have been a member for about two years now, and every "improvement" they have made has been the complete opposite, creating a dangerous, unsanitary place to work out. Avoid this place like the plague. I can't wait until I can finally leave this place.

Great trainers and classes, terrible management. Multiple membership team mislead or flat out lied to keep me in the gym. If they promise you anything, get it in writing.

Awful layout, old equipment, not so great variety in fitness class schedules, but friendly staff and trainers (well most of them). Sadly at this price point there are next to no other alternatives.
