FIRST TIMERS BEWARE,
Came in with a free day pass that I got from the gym’s OWN website, and was told I couldn’t use it because “people commit fraud and use it multiple times.” So instead of fixing their system or verifying anything, they just decided to make honest customers pay for everyone else’s mistakes. Incredible business strategy.
If you advertise a promotion and then refuse to honor it, that’s called misleading, not “policy.”
I still paid and used the gym, but the whole experience felt like a bait-and-switch, and the staff couldn’t care less. If this is how they treat someone on day one, I can only imagine how members are treated once they’ve already signed a contract.
Would not recommend to anyone.

I really enjoys Sharon’s class, it’s a fun work out that leaves you surprisingly sore. She switches it up week to week and explains all the modifications and how things should feel well. Zoe’s yoga class is my favorite, I always find her class to be just the right amount of challenging and she is a very good teacher.

This is a hidden gem! I really enjoyed my experience of yoga in Sharon's class and also my experience of body conditioning with Angelica! I loved these two classes so much <3

My husband and I have been members of BSC Davis Square since they opened, almost 20 years, and have been very satisfied members the whole time. The location is terrific, and the 2nd- and 3rd-floor space and big windows let in lots of natural light but is still private. There is a great selection of equipment and weights. My favorite is the class offerings -- yoga with Sharon Cardamone and Zoe Loversky are particular standouts, but I've never had a bad instructor.

I have been coming here for a while. Unfortunately, I moved to New Jersey yesterday making me cancel my membership. The experience was amazing, the equipment was great, the atmosphere was also amazing. The staff is externally friends and attentive. I enjoyed my experience here so much. I wish there was a location close to my new apt. Hopefully when I come back to visit the Somerville area to see family I will be getting day passes.

was loyal to my gym #NewYorkSportsClub for 16 years. Sixteen. Through moves, job changes, different cities, different bodies. #NYSC and then #BSC (Town Sports International) was a constant. The lighting was bad. The equipment outdated. The vibes? Questionable at best. But it was my gym. My routine. My place to disappear for 1 hour and pretend I had my shit together.
And then they made it impossible to stay.
I signed up when I was still in college in 2009. Back then, they had a student membership: $19.99 a month. A passport membership, they called it. It gave you access to every club in their entire northeast region, NYC, Boston, DC, Philly. And I was locked into that rate for life.
They were everywhere. Like Starbucks. And at the time, they were actually great. Saunas, steam rooms, clean equipment, convenient locations. It was the ultimate “I’ve got my life together” move for a broke 20 year old who just wanted to work out and feel human.
And I stayed.
I paid through COVID even when the clubs were closed. I stayed when they shut down locations and blamed “temporary closures.” I stayed when the towels disappeared, the machines broke, the staff got nastier, and the lights got dimmer. I gave them grace. I let them raise my dues a few dollars here and there even though I was supposedly “locked in.”
Then they raised it $10. Again. Even after they said they wouldn’t. Even after I emailed, confirmed, documented they lied.
And today, I walked into the New York Sports Club Davis Square location for the last time. After 16 years.
Why?
Because it’s not just that they raised prices. It’s that they raised prices while delivering less. Less value. Less care. Less everything.
Broken showers that stayed broken for years. Signs that said “sorry, under maintenance” that might as well have been carved in stone. Bugs in the bathroom. Equipment just...gone. Not replaced...removed. Staff that doesn’t look at you, doesn’t talk to you, and definitely doesn’t care.
Then one day, it became clear: this place doesn't value me. And they don’t even pretend to.
When I went in to cancel, they didn’t try to save the relationship. No acknowledgment. No apology. No offer to honor the promise they made just a year ago. Just a shrug from the manager and a cold, dismissive “okay.”
And that was it. Sixteen years. Gone.
This isn't just about a gym membership. It's about being loyal to a brand that turned around and treated me like I didn’t matter. It’s about showing up for over a decade and being met with disrespect and indifference.
Town Sports International, you had me. For 16 years. You didn’t lose me because someone else wooed me. You lost me because you treated me like shit. You broke the promise. You lied. You ignored.
They don’t get it. It wasn’t about the price. It was about being seen. About being remembered. About the promises never coming through.
They could have kept me. But they couldn’t be bothered.
And that says it all.

Very convenient location and good mix of facilities. I’m a big fan of this gym! I usually take group fitness classes—especially TBC/HIIT with Angelica and Pilates with Sharon—or work out on my own in the mornings. Parking is street-only, but being in the heart of Davis Square makes it easily accessible by public transportation. The gym offers a wide variety of classes in both the mornings and evenings, which is great for any schedule. Angelica and Sharon are fantastic instructors who take the time to walk around during class, ensuring proper form and helping you avoid injury. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for an affordable option with a diverse range of services.

So this gym gets it done. It's a gym! Lots of friendly staff/teachers etc. EXCEPT. An older lady with gray/blond hair at the front, I don't want to call her out by name. She is maybe the rudest person I meet anywhere each week. I don't understand why they let her work the desk. For some people this is the first person they talk to in the morning. If she is the only one at the desk (without supervision) she will be blatantly rude, responding to my "good morning" with a "mmm" and frowning. Or sometimes she responds "Is it??"
In her more talkie moods, she told me (a customer) about how she hates one of the ladies she works with, and there are certain staff she avoids. What on earth? please intervene

I have been going to NYSC for about a year now. I mostly use the weight area early in the morning before work (6:30, 7am) and have rarely had to wait for a piece of equipment. I do wish there were more fans in the space especially in the summer. I go to Angelica's HIIT class and Sharon's Pilates class and enjoy them both a lot - they are both really great instructors. When I'm able to fit it into my schedule I also go to yoga with Zoe, Bodypump with Brett or Gabriella, and Zumba with Tanya and I've enjoyed all of their classes as well.

I’m really disappointed for the way they managed the billings and clients. I hired the personal training service and I can’t complain about the trainer because was so kind and patient. The thing is that they didn’t tell me that you have to contract that for 3 months and now they charged me ($250 and out of the membership AND without any notification) for a “2nd month of the service” that I’m not taking cause I cancelled my membership like 3 months ago. Of course they didn’t refund me anything and basically they told me “there’s nothing else we can do”.

Great gym. Great equipment, sauna, clean. But Yoga with Sharon lures me over here from back bay—the best yoga class ever! Not just fun or exercise or stretching or mobility training (although it is all of these) it’s made a profound impact on my mental wellbeing. I’m grounded and recentered, I leave with calm energy and a clear mind. The grounding perspective I gain soothes my anxiety, brings me out of life lows, and makes me confident for the week ahead. The gym is slowly deteriorating. Management doesn't do the upkeep, machines stay broken for months, lost hardware has never been replenished despite multiple asks for the last year. I’ve been a member of NYSC (fka BSC) for over 11 years and only have great things to say about my experience. The staff is great and welcoming, but this review is specifically for Tim Reed, an elite trainer at the Davis square branch. We’ve been working together for over a year now and I can confidently say he is a genius when it comes to his craft. A true savant who has a knack for making even the toughest workouts fun. Tim seamlessly balances being hilarious and diligently dialed in at all times. He thoroughly communicates the intention behind each movement and always has an answer for any question you have for him. Tim is the hardest worker in the room, but also the most thoughtful. I've been coming to NYSC/BSC in Davis for 10+ years. Under the current management/ownership, it is MUCH improved from pre-Covid times.
Best improvement is the extensive schedule of group classes, with many great instructors.
- Sharon's Pilates and Yoga classes are top notch. She has extensive knowledge of both practices, and does a great job emphasizing the proper technique to all levels of students.
- Elisa's Yoga classes also top notch. She pays close attention to each student with helpful adjustments.
- Angelica's various classes are always challenging, fun, and humbling. Check out her Core class to see what I mean.
- Other awesome instructors include Mia, Macaulley, Charles, and Anna.

Boston Sports Club offers a good selection of classes and equipment. Among the various options, Angelica Teixeira’s classes stand out.
I’ve been taking Angelica Teixeira’s classes for only three months, and the progress I’ve seen is simply incredible! For years, I would sign up for a gym membership, go for a couple of weeks, then lose motivation and quit—wasting money and feeling more discouraged each time. But Angelica changed everything.
She is the first instructor who made me truly enjoy working out and, more importantly, helped me discover the joy of taking care of myself. Her energy is contagious, her guidance is inspiring, and her ability to push you beyond your limits while making every session fun is unmatched.
Angelica is the kind of instructor everyone wishes they had—knowledgeable, motivating, and genuinely invested in her students’ success. Thanks to her, I finally look forward to my workouts and feel stronger, both physically and mentally. If you have the chance to take her classes, do it. You won’t regret it!

The gym sets up a recurring monthly charge. I was told this would be paused when I was out of town. It wasn't. Instead, the gym charged me thousands.
I asked the gym to fix the issue and they said they couldn't refund anything. Then they said they'd ask someone higher in management and get back to me. They never got back to me.

Over the last 6 months I've been going here, I have not had a SINGLE day where I didn't have to alter or eliminate parts of my workout because the machine I need is busy. Most machines they only have one of. So even if you go during off hours, you will be waiting for something.
Also, for the love of Arnold Schwarzenegger, please fix the bench that's been broken since I started here.
For the price, the experience you get is pretty abysmal.

Equipment is a bit dated. Biggest issue is no towel service at this location. Showers worked and had warm water (unlike Boylston St location). Sauna looked like it would have been good, 187F reading (some other BSC/NYSC locations, like Boylston St gym, only get to 150F) but didn’t try because didn’t have two towels.

review takes into account this is a gym located in city, so different expectations vs gym in suburbs (such as LA fitness). overall, pretty good gym for me who works out 5-6times a week. about 3-4 squat racks in total (3 can be modified to do other workouts), 2+ horizontal and 2+ incline bench press etc. one platform upstairs for deadlifting. plenty of free weights. room for cycling upstairs, many treadmills, could use more elliptical machines, some stairmasters do not work.. I usually do not have any issue getting on the machines/equipment i need since i workout in mornings.. can’t say much about how busy it is after work hours.. overall solid choice

Great gym. Nice equipment and large space. Has everything you need for weight lifting or cardio + an upstairs turf section and sauna. Anyone rating this poorly must be looking for issues because the staff are very nice and it is a very clean gym. It definitely gets busy around peak hours, but that’s expected. Even at the most busy time (5-7), it may only add 10 minutes to my 1 hour workouts. Definitely recommend this spot.

This is a solid gym with enough equipment and not a huge membership. This is entirely because of the ridiculous $50 monthly membership fee. I'm not made of money but working out needs to be close to home so it's a bit of a must. Sorry NYSC, the staff is great and it's big enough but I'm bouncing as soon as something a little cheaper (non-planet fitness) opens up near by.

Sketchy place, 9 year member, worse each year. Rebranded to NYSC from BSC. Also, all owner uploaded pics here are NOT THIS LOCATION, no wood floors/green turf/etc., report the owner uploaded pics for not being at this location.
2023: 1 star, they removed a lot of equipment, the place is emptier, and new touchscreen treadmills break now even during workouts, not worth it anymore, and I'm cancelling after almost a decade. I feel uncomfortable more people taking phone calls on the floor + selfies in the locker rooms, management doesn't put up signs/ask people to stop.
2022 2 stars, new slower treadmills with touchscreens, many amenities gone, still broken machines
2021 3 stars, some new mostly working machines. No more towels or drinking fountains. Reduced staff+ people recording videos of their workouts+selfies in locker room not good
Avoid this gym unless it's extremely convenient. They stole money from members during the pandemic, look up BSC class action . Only continued going since my work paid half. Planet fitness > 2x cheaper and used to be lower quality but not anymore that NYSC dropped their standards (Also PF treadmills hit 14mph vs. 12.5mph NYSC ones which do fail DURING your workouts)
--older--
Member since 2013 and I work out there many times a week. The employees are nice: they're always positive, they take note when you bring something up to them, they have a passion to help you work out, and they wish you a good day on your way out, but they have little power to change what happens in the gym.
2016 4 stars update: mediocre equipment maintenance, ok otherwise
2018: 4 stars new management Removed many broken things, put in lower quality replacements.
$20 mo cheap plans (2023 update, gone) but lots of limits and you pay for towels too (2021, no more towels). You can jump on their standard plans, which are ok (2023 price increase), and then you can buy their premium plans which let you visit any "Sports Club" location (2022 update, most other locations are closed, 2023 more closed, some are now PF)
Now here is an unnecessarily long rundown of everything I can think of about BSC Davis:
* Fantastically convenient location in the heart of Davis
* Has child care (2021 gone)
* Has free to use tiny valuable lock boxes (2021 gone)
* Towels must be picked up at the front desk (2021 gone)
* One vending machine inside (2022 gone, 2023 only sports drinks now)
* Locker rooms have locks for overnight use you can rent (2022 price increase)
* Showers are ok, doors never shut right, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash is provided (2021 not guaranteed)
* They have a sauna (never used it myself, 2021 paused,2023 resume)
* Stair masters face the windows, work well (2021,2022,2023 some don't work)
* Elliptical machines face the window, work ok
* About 16 treadmills (2023 now ~12), most work fine, but some a few have bad motors, they changed faster old models for newer slower ones with touch screens (2023, touchscreen ones are worse than the old ones)
* two spin bikes for general use, ok (2023, gone)
* Line of standard stationary bikes, they're fine, (2021,2022,2023 many have broken pedals)
* Standard set of weight machines, about two of each kind. Some of the pins for finer weight adjustments are missing
* Several squat racks, ok
* Stretching areas are ok, but the soft foam is ripping in some places and the areas get packed
* Free weights are good, just not always organized (this is a problem with every gym).
* Rowing machines are usually working(2023, only one working rowing machine usually)
* Fitness studio with speed bag in a corner, and a standing punching bag in another corner. I've never been to a class, but they seem good
---- Upstairs---
* What used to be a nice place to stretch is now a UFX circuit with fake grass, a chain fence on the side, ... This becomes a paid only extra membership area some hours
* Smaller free weight section is upstairs, usually organized
* a second fitness studio for spinning classes
* leg and ab machines

Meets my needs completely. I agree that at peak times it is hard finding anywhere to workout, even floor space. So I just avoid those times. People are friendly. Generally things work. About a year ago I complained about things being put in front of fire doors, the staff responded and it has been handled since. I worked with Mac as a trainer for over a year and really enjoyed the experience. I enjoy the social aspect of working out, since a lot of my workout time is by myself on a bike trainer at home or on the road, it is nice being with people in a gym. I do wish they opened earlier on Saturday. I'm an early riser and the 8:00 start is very late for me. I used to go on Saturday to the branch in Central Square, but it has closed.

I paid $1 for all of February and I still feel like I'm wasting money. Way too packed to have a useful workout if you go around 5, and will stay busy until 8pm. If it wasn't the only gym in walking distance of porter square I would never consider it.
The reality is that this gym is only good for cardio (even though at least 30% of the treadmills aren't working) and maybe the classes. If you're looking for weightlifting, this isn't it. If you used to go to evolve before it closed, I would look hard for any alternative.

It's fine. Issue is it keeps getting more crowded, and they keep taking away equipment. They halved the amount of treadmills a month ago, and now during peak hours I oftentimes can't get one. They took away the only Smith machine last year, and got rid of a barbell bench.
Facilities could use some upkeep. A bunch of the lockers in the men's room are broken or hanging off of hinges. Machines that get broken are out of commission for 2 weeks to a month.
Also, try to understand the clientele a little better. It's pretty transparently a budget weightlifter's gym, and there's 3 squat cages (& 1 smaller rack upstairs) and 2 (awful) barbell benches. Many isolated muscle machines sit unused 90% of the time while there's people waiting 2 deep for a rack. Throw another bench upstairs or in the ginormous Zumba room. I know the space is limited, but it could definitely be used better.
Honestly if it wasn't in such a convenient location for me personally, I would've switched gyms months ago. 3 stars is generous, would've rather given like 2.5

I have complained and also contacted various people about the state of their stationary bicycles. Emails never returned. Of their nine upright bicycles, EIGHT are not working properly. The six Matrix bikes are not hooked up correctly and thus are “self- powered.” (This has been going on for a year or more.) Meaning you have to pedal like mad for about 2-3 minutes, then a screen appears, but the “Levels” don’t work like they would if machines were powered. There is basically only one speed. Hard. Hardly anyone uses them. Today, only one out of the three Life Fitness bikes work. “Out-of-Order” signs on two. This is pathetic. Giving it 2 stars only because the staff is nice, but frankly, the corporation only cares about their weight training clientele. I rely on the bike for rehab and aerobics. PLEASE FIX THESE EIGHT BIKES.

Gym itself is pretty good for a commercial gym. However, I've had the most unsatisfactory experience in terms of how they conduct billing. Almost seems like they have no process and everything is up in the air. I got myself a personal trainer for 3 months (since that is apparently the compulsory minimum cycle), and then they forget to turn off my personal trainer charges for month 4 even after I asked them to do so. Refunding does not seem like an option AT ALL, even when they make errors with billing which is so much more infuriating. Then they said they'd put my account on freeze until they fix this, and yet I'm getting charged on my personal trainer billing cycle (AND FOR WHAT!!!?) outside of the regular gym fee. This issue has been out there for more than 2 months now. Extremely unprofessional, and very frustrating! Should've known better and trusted the reviews that had already warned about this..
Edit with follow up: They responded on my review with a request to reach out and with a promise to resolve. I emailed on the ID provided, followed up, and haven't had any response. My only piece of advice if you sign yourself up with this gym would be, CHECK YOUR CREDIT CARD STATEMENT every month when your billing cycle is due, TRUST ME!

I typically go in off hours (basically any time before 4 PM) and absolutely love it. It’s easy to get around and find a spot. Obviously if you’re there in peak hours, it’s limited space and utilities but you can get crafty and people are generaly really cool about working you in between their sets.
Also- I’ve noticed the cleaning crew has disappeared? I see the staff doing it, and they’re keeping up, but I think this is unfair to the staff and the people who pay a prime price for a top knotch gym to only receive the bare minimum. Also when will towel service come back? I noticed it’s back for the Pru location, and would love to have that back.

Went here a few times where there were facilities issues with the Wellington location (which was a significantly better gym), and our memberships were temporarily open to all gyms. They charged me an extra fee for it anyways and I spent a week fighting it until I got the money back. Altogether the gym is just a cramped zoo and I didn't care for it.
I had cancelled my membership mid-2020 while BSC was battling with the state for their right to not cancel people's memberships for a closed gym, and was fairly confused to find out I was still being billed even after the Wellington location (which my membership had previously been tied to) closed permanently. I didn't realize until after the fact that all the old memberships had been converted to be open to all locations which might be alright if they hadn't just closed their only good location.
So I reached out to this branch to confirm my wife and I's memberships would be cancelled immediately (and without fees), and get an explanation for what happened. I cited the dates, and point of contact of the email exchange I had when I had originally asked to have my membership cancelled.
They ignored all my attempts to contact them through the BSC web portal. I never received a single email or phone call back in the several weeks I spent reaching out. I finally had to cancel my debit card just to ensure that I definitely wasn't going to be billed again. I made enough noise that I got corporate (still not the Davis Square staff) to speak to me about it. They insisted they weren't liable for any of the old management's malfeasance, and kept changing their story from the local branch never owed me a response to my repeated cancellation requests, to they actually did reach out and then kept changing the dates of when this supposedly happened. It was a mess.
The pandemic was certainly unprecedented, but I had memberships to other things and places that were equally impacted and I can say with certainly I didn't have any sort of battles with any other company like this one. The only thing that really seems different with the new BSC management is that they have a more sophisticated corporate body in place to rationalize the same old sketchy gym grift.

I went to Boston Sports Club in Davis Square today to use the weight room and sauna. The weight room was too packed to reasonably get a work out in, which is pretty typical given the small size of the gym.
As I entered the sauna, I noticed an individual sitting in an unusual position with his legs in the air on the bench. When I looked back at him a second time, I noticed that he was convulsing and touching himself inappropriately. Clearly what happened here is that this intoxicated individual gained entrance to the gym because no staff members were present at the front desk. I would not recommend BSC in Davis Square to anyone and I have been a BSC member for multiple years.

This summer I signed up for a 1 day free pass, used it and never went back. 3 months later I am just seeing I've been getting charged $35/mo since. Nothing against the employees in the gym, but BSC is the most suspect and fraudulent company I've ever dealt with. I used to be a member at their Lynnfield location, which they closed permanently during Covid. So, I figured I wasn't getting billed. Oh boy, I was wrong. They started charging me under a different name, which I realized about 5 months later. When I realized and called BSC Corporate, I was told I needed to cancel my membership in person, which, as I mentioned previously, was impossible since the gym was no longer in business. All in all, BSC owes me somewhere between $250-300. I thought I was through the horrible pains of dealing with this corporate conglomerate mess of an establishment, but apparently I'm not. I can't wait to talk to some robot of a human and try to figure this out again. Thanks a lot BSC. And P.S. I've never left a review online before. BSC clearly holds a special place in my heart. A shady and unethical business. They have been charging me (and many other people) monthly and annual fees totalling well over $100 at a time when the gym has been closed for months.
After you've opened a membership, good luck closing it. You cannot close it over the phone, you cannot close it online, you cannot close it via email. No, you have to go in person or send a certified (!) letter. Then they charge you a $10 cancellation fee. Unethical and illegal, but they don't care. TSI/BSC handled closing due to Covid terribly, and I remain unimpressed with their reopening. They claimed that all members got emails about the reopening plan, credits due from the closing, and future billing, both from the Davis branch and from TSI. I didn't receive any of that communication, and was still awaiting word on what their plan was. Much to my surprise, I have a pending charge from BSC for my September dues, most of which had been "covered" by the credit I should have received from their closing in March. Despite there still being a global pandemic, they haven't updated their cancellation policy of needing to cancel in person or write a certified letter that then takes 45 days to process.
TSI continues to show how little they care about customers or working with you when they are in error.
EDIT: For what it's worth - apparently the reason I didn't receive any emails was because I had opted out of marketing emails months ago. Which is honestly just such a poor implementation, that if you opt out of marketing emails you don't receive any other informational emails ever.
When I was on the phone with a rep from the gym initially, I was assured I wouldn't have any additional fees upon cancellation and that it would just be zeroed out. A minute after walking out of the gym having cancelled, I get a receipt for a $10 cancellation charge. TSI/BSC is truly the worst company I've interacted with in the duration of Covid.
EDIT 2: Unsurprisingly, following up via email got me nowhere and was just routed back to the people I had spoken to in the first place. The real kicker is I cancelled my membership on the 25th/26th... and then got charged for the month of October 5 days later. Class act BSC.
EDIT 3: THEY JUST FREAKING CHARGED ME AGAIN ON A RANDOM DATE, A MONTH AFTER I CANCELLED. Maybe a lawsuit is what it would take to end this level of incompetence and malicious intent. Infuriating.
