I met Jesse when he worked at a large gym and I sought him out because he was always the only trainer who was crouching alongside his clients to give encouragement while they were straining to complete a tough deadlift, squat or plank. I worked with Jesse, mostly after he opened his own gym, for about four years (till I moved out of town) and enjoyed his companionship and wide-ranging conversation almost as much as the well-designed torture he put me through. Jesse keeps up with the technical aspects of his profession and can talk latissimus dorsi and external obliques if you’re so inclined. His gym is always a warm, supportive place. I came to Jesse when I was in my 60’s; I’m much younger now!

I am not someone who has ever committed to a regular workout routine or who felt comfortable in a group setting (read: clumsy and not athletic). I decided to give personal training a try and really had no idea what to expect. I started in August 2023 and it is the only fitness plan I’ve ever stuck to. I met Jesse in 2019 at a Super Bowl party with his dog Meatball in tow. Mind you, I was fit in college good bench press, ran 20+ miles a week, but I had fallen off hard from grad school and the daily grind of being a tax lawyer, plus I was 35 yo at the time so everything was slowing down. We started talking about athletes cause of the game, and got into fitness and working out. Next day I signed up and started working - I couldn’t even do a proper bodyweight squat at the time due to sitting in an office chair and rugby ankle injuries. Jesse pushed me through a variety of exercises - lifting, form techniques, and body weight cardio in his gym. It took going 3-4 times a week, and really working during sessions. Also, I got some great pointers on intake of types of food, water, and other advice that i implemented and saw results. The attached pic is my progress over just about 9 months. I’ve never been more fit than when I was working with Jesse at North End Fitness. My only regret is that I had to move to Austin for work, and don’t get the benefit of his coaching and training anymore.

Working with Jesse as my personal trainer was one of the most solid decisions I've made in recent memory. Prior to working with him, I was pretty intimidated of the gym. Jesse boosted my confidence pretty immediately; he knows how to connect with his clients, when to push them and when to reward them with a break. He was always super accommodating with my crazy schedule and was super understanding of any last-minute changes. The only reason why I stopped working with him was because I moved out of the city. It's awesome when you have a trainer that you are genuinely friends with, and it's a huge plus as well when they are insanely competitive price-wise compared to all the other trainers in the area. I credit Jesse massively to why I genuinely enjoy going to the gym now, so to anyone that's undecided, you should go for it.

Jesse Setaro quite simply offers the best of what a personal trainer can provide. He is fluent in the science of his field. He is thoughtful and considerate of his clients and their needs. He carefully listens, and assesses what clients want out of their work, and crafts each workout to provide that to them. He is a great listener, and, although he is a master of his craft--getting you in shape--he is always ready to learn for you, and from you. As Jesse not occasionally puts it, "it's called PERSONAL training." During your session, he is there, one-hundred percent for you.

Additionally, though it need not necessarily be said of a personal trainer, Jesse is dedicated to his community in the North End, as well as to the larger community of Boston, and does a lot of work with young people from families who have not enjoyed the advantages that others have.

But enough about that! I'm in my 60s, and thanks to Jesse, I'm reaching personal records every week!
