I locked my bag in one of their lockers. When I got there, the lock was off, and my wallet, containing over $200, and my bank card had been stolen. The manager told me there was nothing I could do and that PLANET FITNESS isn't responsible for lost items in the locker room area, where they don't have cameras. The security logistics here are terrible.

I'd genuinely give one star if I could, but the fact this is a gym you can exercise in merits at least two.

It is impossibly busy during peak hours. As in, you will wait for any machine you wish to use...for quite some time. For some reason this branch opts to only have 1 of everything except smith machines despite having ample room for more resistance training machines.

Gym is in a basement that feels like a sauna at all times.

Go literally anywhere else. Except there isn't anywhere else in Boston with a membership <$100 a month. Which is probably why you are here, like me.

I went there today to sign up for a membership and had an issue with my billing. The staff said, 'It’s your billing problem, not our problem.' While that may be true, is that really how you treat customers? She also gave me attitude, didn’t even try to help or offer any advice. Staff behind the counter was to busy being on there phones. I told the girl I wanted to join with a black card membership. She handed me and told me to fill this out then download the app and fill that out never offering to show me around or tell me about the establishment or the membership or anything about the gym itself. I have been to planet fitness’ across the country and this is one of the worst and potentially unsafe gym locations I have been to. Crowded, hot, and zero air flow makes the potential risk of overheating and passing out a much larger risk than it should be. There is no ventilation, and convection/ air flow is required for sweat to actually evaporate and then cool your body safely. Industrial fans that move air should be standard, especially in a very busy gym that is a national chain.

There is a general lack of equipment, and the ceilings are not high enough to have a proper pull up bar or stair stepper.

It would get 1 star if I did not live down the street.

Female employee just announces herself entering the men's locker room. Doesnt ask if anyone is decent yet just announces and enters anyways. Starts cleaning 40 minutes before close, so I couldn't shower, since she is in there cleaning, so best leave smelling bad, its uncomfortable. And mopping at a high traffic time when everyone is leaving or packing and everyone trying to avoid being in the way . Please start cleaning 5 minutes before close or at close not 40 minutes before.

As a frequent traveler, I made a decision earlier in the year to leave an expensive, local only club on Boyleston Street to join Planet Fitness. With a Black Card Membership that is 25% of the monthly cost, it was a no brainer and, in addition to my Back Bay Boston home club, I have now visited clubs in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Missouri and Kansas. Each location has been a 4-5 star experience.

I’ve had a very disappointing experience at Planet Fitness on Newbury Street and feel obligated to share my recent encounter with their management. When I signed up, I provided two payment methods—my debit card for the standard $10 monthly fee and my credit card for the startup charge. To my surprise, I discovered that for the past three months I’d been billed $30 each month, an unexpected $20 more than agreed upon.

When I contacted the club, they claimed there was an issue with my bank account and that they had the right to charge my credit card and apply late fees without my explicit consent or even a courtesy notification. Despite my attempts to understand and resolve the matter, the club’s response was largely to push the responsibility back onto me. I ended up with $60 in extra fees before I even knew what was happening.

Initially, the staff agreed to a $40 refund, which felt like a step in the right direction. However, upon following up, the promised refund seemed to evaporate, and suddenly I was told I’d only receive $20 back. I requested an escalation process to address this, but was informed there’s no further avenue since it’s a franchise location. The lack of transparency and accountability was extremely frustrating.

What bothers me most isn’t just the money—it’s the dismissive attitude, the shifting promises, and the sense that resolving a simple billing matter was simply not a priority. In a neighborhood as well-regarded as Newbury Street, it’s disheartening to encounter such poor customer support and confusing billing practices. I truly hope this location takes steps to improve its communication, consistency, and overall respect for its customers. Until then, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for your fitness needs.

For a workout before workday, the door is always open on time.
Considering the large number of people, the work-out room and locker room are clean and well maintained. And there is rarely an unreasonable wait for weights.
All credit goes to the staff. They are always friendly and courteous.
While it doesn't adversely affect a workout, the lower level has low ceilings, and they didn't have a large budget for mirrors.

It seems I'm always informing the staff of clogged showers and they're not getting fixed?? I literally told them the week before and the week before that the showers are clogged. I don't understand why this has been a recurring problem for the two years I've been a member at this gym.

I stood in dirty water because all of the showers weren't draining and then got a rash infection pretty immediately (which I thought may be mosquito bites in the gym) but then realized it was a breakout on my ankle two nights ago.

I'm disgusted and disturbed. I don't want to review this planet fitness so poorly, as they're conveniently located and generally a clean, organized, and friendly gym but they take forever to take care of issues in the women's locker room.

Lots of good equipment. Never really crowded. A year ago I posted how clean this is. Something changed big time. The lower level is just filthy. I’m so sad to see it’s not being cleaned. There is trash and papers everywhere and dirt/dust under the machines and on the edges of the walls. This is very obviously not just a days worth of dirt and trash.
I tried to find a way to message the manager or owner , but couldn’t figure it out so I thought I would just post here as I know they check reviews. Hopefully someone will push staff to clean.

The supervisors have been refusing to switch my home gym to mattapan for over a month after several request.

This morning is the second morning that the gym is not open when it is supposed to. Sunday they should open at 7 AM, me and a bunch of other members waited for 1 hour, they never opened.

This morning I showed up at 5AM and waited until 6 AM, the door was closed. If you're an early morning person, this Gym will not match well with your morning workout routine. I am seriously considering canceling my membership now.

Other thing I noticed is that now equipment stay broken longer, 1 shower is broken too. Even the refrigerator didn't have water for a few days and hand sanitizers devices against the wall are empty.
I guess this is what you get when you do not pay people a livable wage.

First Review:
That location is accessible and the staff is nice. What I don't like. It gets extremely busy with college students. They take forever to fix equipment that breakdown a lot. In women's locker room people are using the few bigger lockers as rentals. They have locks on them (lockers #59, 45, 24, 10 have been occupied for months), other members cannot use them anymore which is inconvenient when it is super busy or if you have a lot of stuff you occupy 2 small lockers. I am chocked the staff doesn't notice that to remove those locks or remind members they can't do that. Parking between 8 AM and 8PM costs almost $9 for 2 hours and the meter maids are vicious ($40 ticket). It is in a commercial area so walking might be best. A bathroom and a smith machine broke down over 5 months now, still not fixed. Place is dusty if you pay attention, they need to do a better job cleaning.

Canceled membership two days before the next billing date and still got charged for the next month, despite the associate telling me I wouldn’t be charged for the next month. Plus, they make you come in to cancel, no option to cancel through the app or phone.

Edit based on owner's response: The associate I spoke to in-person explicitly stated that I would not be charged for the next month. If your own associates aren't aware of your store policies, then how should I be expected to be aware of them? The 1-star review remains as these are predatory practices and meant to squeeze every penny out of customers.

Edit: The charge they said would happen and that they couldn’t do anything about seems to not have materialized, but whether that is due to the rating I gave originally, I don’t know. As such, I’ve bumped up my rating, as their other services are good.
Feb 2024: I’m giving a bad rating is that their annual fee will get charged even if you pay when you signed up and you cancel within a year. Considering it’s $50 on top of your $10 monthly fee, this is very deceptive. Go to somewhere that doesn’t charge hidden fees. To top this off, they require either a letter or an in-person visit to cancel. I appreciate their keeping people in shape by making it hard to cancel, but this is too far for those of us who simply moved too far away to use this location.

If you go at 5am, you might be able to get on the free weight equipment you want. Otherwise, be prepared for a wait, and the younger college crowd is oblivious to anyone else around and are not into sharing equipment. I've had people just balk at me for asking to share and sit on equipment scrolling on the phone in between their sets rather than rotate with me. They hoard it at their bench, won't share in between sets while scrolling on their phones, rather than share when I've asked. Management can't parent their clients into behaving better, unfortunately.

The lockers and bathrooms are always clean, there is at least that.

There is one thing that is on management, though. If you need to pause your membership or speak to a manager, not happening. I've been waiting 3 weeks for someone to get back to me. People keep telling me they'll pass the message along, but no call. They happily deduct the fees from my bank account, though. I'm at the point where canceling is my only option. At least there will be one less person waiting for free weights.

Update Jan 2024: The national office replied to this review, but my local gym didn't. I called a few more times and went in person twice, and still couldn't get a manager to talk to me. I was told each time they were processing the refund, but the money never appeared. They said it would take 2 weeks. Two months later, I contacted the BBB. After they reached out to management, twice, I finally got my fees back. It should not be this hard to get a refund. I am no longer a member.

The wife signed up for this gym thinking she signed up for one closer to where we actually live, she is disabled and boston is a long way away. About 3 weeks ago she called and canceled her membership "oh fine" says the receptionist. "The cancelation should go through in 3 business days". 2 weeks later we think all is well. Then we got hit for 3 drafts to her bank account, 2 we expected, one we didn't. The first two were her monthly fee and yearly fee. Fine. Problem is she's on a fixed income. Her account was empty at that time and we thought all was well because the person we spoke to said the cancellation was done, and the plan was canceled. Nope. So not only did planet fitness not get their money because my DISABLED wife was waiting on her living money from the state, no no, now the account is overdrawn twice. But that's not where this ends. I mentioned a third arbitrary charge. That one bounced as well. It was for $49. Neither of the fees we expected were that amount re-drafting, 25 for the gym, 40 for the yearly. So now my wife's account for her medical expenses is overdrawn. Yippie. To make matters worse, she called again. Person on the phone is asking my DISABLED WIFE to go into the heart of boston to cancel in person because she can't cancel over the phone, even though we were told by multiple other clubs we could. If I could give this festering dumpster fire negative stars, I would. Stay faaaaaar away from their predatory tactics.

I drove out of my way to this location because it was not only listed as wheelchair accessible but as also having a wheelchair accessible parking lot. I drove around even going down the public alley in the back hoping that there was some parking lot or entrance that I didn’t know about given that it’s newbury street and I would’ve just assumed they weren’t accessible or had their own parking if it wasn’t for them listing themselves as such.

I drove there, spent extra time, energy and gas money only to see a front door where the only thing visible was a flight of stairs to walk into the gym. No handicap buttons on the doors, no handicap spot, no handicap parking lot or parking lot at all.

It’s a lie. If you are disabled and have limited mobility, standing time, or walking distance then do not attempt to come here! It will be a waste of time!

I started coming to this location since it opened (a year ago if I'm not mistaken) I come to this location every week, like 3 or 4 times a week, it's convenient for me because it's close to my house.
the gym itself is small but enough in size wise, the equipment is all new which is great IF they give maintenance often.
they keep changing staff, and it's been a while since the team that started it is not the same one working here today, that being said:
1 - there's always a bathroom out of order (they only have 3 toilets in the lady's room).
2 - the gym is small they don't have a variety of machines (one of each equipment rarely two), which is problem because they never fix the machines as soon as they break down, they are out of order for more than weeks, if you are assiduous with your training I am sorry to inform you that you will be weeks without train some muscle because they leave the equipment broken for weeks, and I'll give you an example: they have two leg extension machines: 1 has been not working for 4 weeks and the other one (also not working for around 3 or so) is also out of order but you still can try your luck and try to use it because is barely working, they poorly fixed it and it keeps dropping all the weight. (unfortunately I don't have pictures but I will take some next time because I'm sure it will be out of order still).
this gym has everything to work out, great location, ideal size but the lack of equipment maintenance is a disgrace.

Very clean location with plenty of equipment. This 2 story location was very pleasantly located and comfortable to visit. The AC was blowing so well that I barely broke a sweat during a half hour cardio session on the treadmill downstairs. I visited early on Saturday, about 15 minutes after the doors opened. Of all the PF locations I have visited, in Washington DC, Cambridge MA (my home gym), Waltham MA, Hyannis MA and South Yarmouth MA, this was one of the best.

The staff is always super nice! Not a world star gym by any means but that's not what planet fitness is supposed to be. Equipment seems well cared for and I am always happy to go. Big thing too, while the showers aren't perfect, they actually get paid attention to unlike some places that have public showers I have encountered which is great because I commute and being able to hit the gym and shower before work once I get I the city is great and means less travel time overall for me.

They’re no longer 24 hours and this is a huge dealbreaker for me. As someone that works a late shift my only free time is after midnight, loved that this location provided that for me. Especially since I can’t be around a large crowd during the day due to bad COVID experiences the quiet times after hours was a plus. Please consider bringing 24 hours back for us late night folks

I LOVEEEE Planet!!!! Riah is amazing and always welcomes me with a loving/positive attitude, bright face, and assists me with my needs on form/workout techniques which always makes me feel comfortable and I appreciate so MUCH! I love the equipment. Every individual is focused on their own goals which is so inspiring to watch and motivating! In addition I appreciate the help I get on form placements and what I can improve!!!! Planet sometimes feels like my home away from home!!! I am always excited to go there and every time I take my time and workout there, I always have a fun filled day ahead of me!!!! The team is reliable, the equipment and facility is great...side note though...bring your own locks for your lockers! If you are used to going to a gym in a suburb, it is likely you don't need a lock when you go to a gym but since it is an incredibly busy area with many people, you never know who might grab and take your things so bring your locks! A lot of space, very clean, very alert staff!!! LOVE PLANET! 💗

HUGE shout out to Sage and Alaina (in no particular order! Lol)!
I've been to a lot of PF facilities and this is one of the nicest and friendliest duo I've seen. Plus they are always cleaning to keep the equipment looking nice and sanitary. I wouldn't recommend too many PF facilities, but I 100% recommend this one strictly because of these two! A+

1st want to say Ive been to many PT facilities around MA as its a great, convenient gym to just hop right in with very reasonable pricings! Just moved back into the city as saw this location was great as its near my work. I was at the front desk and there was just 2 very Grumpy employee who approached me and didn't even know your pricings for your membership...Like what? Huh? To be honest if you have employees like this, they should just be sent home and not throw attitude's around while they are being paid to be there. Whoever is the owner of this facility really needs to talk to your employees. They don't want to work then just go home! Never had such a horrible experience like this before. thanks

Also after the managers replied, I reached out in the direction they gave to me below. No one even answers me after its been about 2months of time. So I never say a point for them to say "sorry". Like what? Do you guys even try to respond after emailing and calling ? Maybe try re-training your Manager? Or whats the point of me reaching out then, Im confused ?

Everything is new. Massage chairs, tanning rooms. Not a bunch of muscle heads. Always very clean and never they never run out of sanitizer and paper towels. However, music is too loud, and I can't hear my music. They need another cable fly machine or even the sit-down fly machine; they need to get rid of the cardio machines on the bottom floor they are just taking up space and replace with the fly machines or mats for other exercises. The upstairs stretching area is too small, move it downstairs

Pretty friendly staff, mostly clean and not that crowded. Lots and lots of great equipment but they should be careful not to have the temperature too high. I'd say around the low to mid 70's is a good temperature so we're not too hot or too cold during a work out.

Facilities are clean, and staff is nice. Everyone minds their own business. We did witness someone's bags get stolen, so make sure to bring a lock for your locker. Only other thing is that one of the water massage chairs doesn't work, but it wasn't a big deal because the normal massage chairs were amazing.

This gym is good good environment friendly employees clean facility. People usually do their part and clean their spots up. Employees take care of things left over and engage properly with guests when needed. This gym is definitely worth the sub, HOWEVER, for people who get to work out over the weekend and late, it’s not ideal because the gym closes very early. Open 24/5 Monday to Friday when people need to work/rest early, but the weekend is off limits??? It is very frustrating as usually I get the time and energy over the weekend when I’m not swamped with things to do. 4/5

Poor management, really bad employees. Employees are disrespectful and unreliable, district manager is entitled. I chose to leave the company because my self worth was insulted by the ignorance of the employees. I recommend going after 9pm, Angie is a really sweet women who works overnight, she was the only person who respected me and my time.
