This gym intentionally makes it difficult to cancel your membership, like many gyms; they will only let you cancel when a manager is present.
If you try to cancel online, there are "instructions" on how to cancel, but when you follow them, they don't actually lead to a page that exists. There is no "cancellation section" in any form when you navigate through the UI after logging into your own account, or found anywhere else on their site.
They make it difficult to cancel so that they can scrape more money out of you.
As for the actual gym, it's fine and will work for most people--it's located in a basement and doesn't really have enough equipment to serve people's needs during busy hours. I think they could fit a lot more equipment in there but for some reason they don't (only one quad machine which is almost always occupied, etc.).

This by far is one of the best and cleanest retros I have ever been to. The staff is extremely welcoming and does an excellent job in maintaining a strong sense of cleanliness throughout the gym environment. I highly recommend giving a retro a chance and checking this gym out if you are in the Boston area, this gym is extremely affordable starting at just 20 dollars a month and has all the equipment you need to get that excellent pump.

Be careful with the payment, they charged me four to five times a year the annual fee, then you try to resolve it, they don't resolve it, they don't do anything.
The gym needs a good cleaning too.
If you think like this as a member, I would be very careful about paying the check every month at your bank.
The head of the Academy only knows how to sit on the bench and let paper run out.

Absolutely love this gym, the machines work, the gym is clean, massage chairs are my favorite. They seem to fix things on a pretty good schedule once they are notified. Shengdi in the morning is so nice and always makes me feel welcomed. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Except for one, I think she is fairly new the gym, I believe she is in charge of PT or something, but she needs an attitude adjustment. She gives dirty looks, is always loud, and I have seen her get into it with a few members. She doesn’t seem like an ideal fit in my opinion. However, one bad egg does not ruin the overall great gym this is :)

I love this gym! Awesome classes, friendly staff, lots of equipment, and even a smoothie bar which you can use rewards on. I appreciate the budget friendly memberships and how you can bring a buddy every time if you have the ultimate membership.

Gym is always pretty clean. Staff have always been helpful and friendly. It can get a bit busy and derail some workout plans, but it’s always manageable.

One thing, the wifi hasn’t worked properly for months. When asked, the staff explain how they’ve seen it affect only Verizon customers. It worked when I first joined, but I haven’t been able to sign onto the local network since Jan. Makes listening to music really frustrating.

VERY nice gym. The gym is practically brand new-you can smell the rubber off the rubber plates. It has every gym amenity you need for whatever workout you're doing-deadlifts, lying leg curls, t-bar rows, skull crushers, decline bench presses-everything!

Even the locker rooms were nice and well maintained-it felt like you were in a nice Hollywood gym!

EDIT: The gym now offers single day passes. As of this writing the day passes are $10. Really cheap and affordable if you need an emergency gym day :)

I thoroughly enjoy the large selection of equipmen/machines and the two sections of dumbbells, that goes up to 120lbs . I'm a big fan of the squat racks, plenty of plates. Great section for the uses of the medicine balls and sled. I believe every serious gym should have them.The locker room is inviting and doesn't smell like a locker room. Super clean bathroom. And the made to order smoothie bar or protein shake is a nice touch.. Anything peanut butter is always a win. to comparing to some other clubs that I have trained before , don't offer the same quality or training experience.

Let's start with the good: the equipment is well maintained, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the gym itself is clean. The men's locker room, showers, and restroom are very clean, too.

The meh: there's only 2 water fountains and they're located on one side of the gym, next to the locker rooms. Not a deal breaker.

The bad: their contracts have ridiculously small cancellation windows and are very restrictive. I signed up for a one-year contract where I would get weekly training sessions twice a week. I was told by the assistant manager Laura that I could cancel at any time if I did not like the program. Fast forward a week and I double check the contract to find out that you can only cancel "at anytime" within the first 3 days of signing. After that window, you can only cancel one of three ways:
1. You die
2. You get a doctor's note that says you can't do any physical activity for more than 3 months
3. You move your residence or employment to a location that is not within 25 miles of another Retro Fitness or "Substantially similar healthy club that will accept the seller's obligation under the contract". I'm not sure what the second part means but it sounds like they could sell this contract to another gym.
And you need to make sure you're rescheduling any missed sessions because they will keep on billing you even if you miss an appointment.

When I brought this up to the manager, Kyle, he said he couldn't do anything and that I was stuck with the contract as Laura definitely told me about the cancellation window. I accept that I should have checked the contract earlier but the way the manager just blew me off and made no attempt to help me was frustrating. I can't speak for their classes as I have never taken the classes they offer.

I definitely recommend coming here, just be careful when signing up for personal training and don't make the same mistake I did

Your Pilates class was scheduled to end at 5:50 PM. Howard’s class was scheduled to start at 6:00 PM. You and your group didn’t leave until way past 6, and Howard’s class didn’t even get to start until 6:20. Sixteen of us were waiting outside for a class we signed up for, a class that YOU had no right to steal time from.

You heard knocking? You felt the frustration? That wasn’t Howard. That was us, the people.

What makes YOU entitled to tell Howard to get out when he was standing up for the people who had been waiting?

What makes YOU entitled to slam the door in his face when he was just trying to prepare the stations for the people?

What makes YOU entitled to accuse him of “barging in” when it was YOUR class that refused to leave and stole OUR time?

What makes YOU entitled to call him a “maniac” when YOU were the ones causing the problem?

Overall this is a great place , but after today’s class with Howard barging in to our Pilates class was NOT OKAY! The manager didn’t stop him or try and calm him down after his manic screaming episode at our Pilates instructor Shannon . The CO2 levels in this gym hover around 1500-2500ppm (measured using an Aranet 4). That's not bad but there is some room for improvement by increasing the HVAC's total fan runtime, especially during peak hours. Also I totally blasted my quadriceps here

Lori is an amazing teacher and director of group ex classes and truly focuses on an improvement students can make either in class or in their daily lives bringing a lesson to each class. I feel that from the classes I have went to she provides just enough levels of difficulty to each pose where every level of conditioning is welcomed in her classes whether it’s Pilates, yoga or functional fitness! I heavily recommended going to her Pilates class!

I absolutely love this gym! It’s always spotless, and the cleanliness makes it such a comfortable place to workout and shower after. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which creates such a positive atmosphere. I had a billing question and I worked with the manager, Anita who was working onsite to get an answer. So, I signed up for this gym on March 2024, and was promised it would be opened by April the latest. A lady with an iPad showed me all the machines they were bringing and unboxing, so I actually signed for the gym. Every single week I went to the place to check if they were opening, and I kept seeing no progress. I called several times requesting an opening date, and they just kept delaying it (from the original April, to May, to June and so on). Until I decided to cancel my membership since it felt like forever and I had to move out. I called on June, and requested my membership contract to be terminated. They told me it was and that there would be no problem, that they had me covered. Months after, I check my bank account and since they opened (on August), I see they are charging me the monthly fee! So I call again to request a cancellation and a refund, and they tell me they cannot refund me because I signed a contract (even though months earlier I called to cancel), but that they could terminate my contract at that time to not get charged again. I got charged AGAIN. So I called for the third time requesting to cancel my membership and it seems their system has no record of ANY of my calls, and since they haven't sent me any email or written document that states that I cancel, they can legally continue charging me for this. I requested an email during my last call, and they evasively responded me "it was better to call since through email they take longer to respond". Now I don't even know how to cancel the membership, I have no email to refer to, and I know that by calling they won't solve anything.

I live around the area and creating a membership is incredibly easy. The evening staff , Sam and Gabby, were incredibly helpful explaining the facility, showcasing all of the rooms and perks that Retro Fitness has to offer.

Would like to share a video of an unpleasant experience I’ve had with the manger. I joined when the gym first opened, and it is a nice gym. However, I found the business side to be very shady.

I signed up for a few personal training sessions and was told that it would be a one-time payment and not reoccurring. It turns out, I signed a reoccurring contract without my knowledge, and because of that I was, I was charged almost $1,000 over a few weeks. I notified the gym and they froze the charge (which I was thankful for) and said they would investigate the incident. I checked in fairly often and didn't hear back and decided to contact my credit card company since my payment was due soon and opened a fraud case. Long story short, I was reimbursed by my credit card and issued a new card.

My personal trainer told me that they have been hearing more cases of this. Unfortunately, he told me that he ended up getting fired for retaliating against HR after escalating complaints (this being one of them).

I strongly recommend using an app like Privacy that lets you generate merchant locked credit cards with monthly spend limits. It's a good thing I did this because even after my credit card company closed the case, Retrofitness is still trying to charge me that amount ($990). It has been a giant headache trying to deal with this and spending hours on the phone with Retrofitness and my credit card company.

Please be aware of this when signing up for personal training!!!

The staff is always so sweet and welcoming. The smoothies are delicious and super macro-friendly whether you're on a cut or a bulk. And nothing beats relaxing in the massage chairs after a great workout, plus they have so many different settings on them! Overall, love love love this gym.

Very good gym in the area with clean and modern facilities. I will continue to workout here. Only complaint is that there needs to be more cleaning wipe stations and/or more frequent checking by staff that they are not empty, as that has been a common issue. But this isn’t enough for me to give it 4 stars.

Great location and easy to get to. Clean, bright, new equipment, friendly staff. Lots of racks, bars, bumpers, machines, medicine balls, kettlebells, TRX setups, bands, etc. Great rates and different membership options, I'm enjoying my experience here for sure. It's refreshing to have another gym to compete in this area, it's needed.

At the beginning of May, they said they’d open by May 25th. Then they pushed it to the first week of June. I just called, and now they’re saying the end of June. It might be a great gym, but if they can’t nail down an opening date, why bother advertising so early? This mismanagement is a bad sign. I will update my rate when I actually used the gym

I've been going here since it opened. It's been about 2 weeks and I can say it's pretty good, good vibes and a complete gym. I would give it 4.5 stars just because it lacks some items.

Great environment and excellent staff! Today one of the staff members, I believe her name was Laura helped me tremendously showing me around and motivated me to keep coming back. She also gave me some pointers when I was working out. The gym was super clean and the equipment is really nice. Definitely will be coming back and recommending my friends.

For the price I may have never seen a better gym. Fresh new equipment, friendly and receptive staff. The benches are personally the perfect height allowing me to only need to lift the bar by like an inch and ended up giving me a extra rep in the tank.

Kyle the manager and Jay a trainer there were both very nice and receptive to feedback. I asked for a chest supported t-bar row and they showed me it was already on the list and on order.

No sauna though but they have a partnership with sweathouz I havent explored yet.

As a female, I feel so comfortable working out here. The equipment is so nice and clean and they even have a hip thrust machine and over 3 free weight squat racks. Love it ! And their smoothie bar is so cute

Aggressive marketing and sales campaign without follow through or transparency - reflects poorly on management. I grew up on Retro Fitness (high school), I love the company, and I have been excited for this location to open since I signed up in April. I check in every few weeks and the answer is always, "waiting for equipment, will be open by the end of next month." Recommend that corporate gets involved to hold either vendors or management accountable and publicize a realistic opening date. If Retro can't open until Fall 2024, that's fine, but I'll join another gym in the meantime. If the hollow assurances and consistent disappointment continue, they will lose this community. Would be a shame. Not 1-star because I love New Jersey Retro. Open to editing my review if follow through and transparency improve.

Unfortunately, the Porter Sq. Retro Fitness Gym is not actually open yet. Almost 6 months ago, they had people outside under a tent pavilion, talking about how they would open soon, and getting people to sign up. I call up every month, and they always say that they will be opening a month in the future. The story never changes. It's always that the equipment hasn't arrived yet. And, that the contractors aren't doing the work.
