I would NOT entrust this company whatsoever especially with children. One of their school bus drivers hit my car!! I had a passenger and the driver told everyone he was not looking! My car is badly damaged and I’m waiting to see if it can even be repaired. Do not take your children here. The drivers are grossly incompetent and reckless. The owners was too scared to say anything, even apologize. I understand the existing bad reviews but BEWARE OF the gross negligence even of the ymca bus drivers. Terrible and wouldn’t recommend even driving past it bc that’s how my car got hit.

Love the adult swim class. The swim director and the rest of the instructors are very encouraging, knowledgeable, and let you learn at your own pace. There'a frequent rotation in who leads the class every week, and that means you get exposure to different approaches and are always learning something new. The best part of my week!

It’s so gross. The worst ymca I’ve been to. Inside seems like you are going into captivity or inside a jail. They only have 5 treadmills which 2 aren’t working. I’ve never felt so bad inside a gym.

It’s gross, dirty, old, and overall weird 😣the best that can be said for it is that it is, technically, a gym. But even though this one is way closer, it’s the Cambridge YMCA for me dawg.

The homeless guys upstairs I believe have a free membership to the private men’s club. And no matter what the staff says to them they use it as a laundry mat.. so you see people down there picking sores on the bottoms of their feet .. truly they were taught no basic hygiene whatsoever, men in their late 50s and 60s? Disgusting.
I’ve had stuff taken out of my lockers. So I quit. Stay away from that place. They barely clean it. Same rolled up Band-Aid in the corner for two weeks. The maintenance guy. I don’t know what he’s doing in there.

The place has most of the basic equipment you'd need, and I used it for a year and a half. When I saw what looked like mouse droppings clinging to a workout mat I was about to stretch out on, I canceled my membership. I never used the pool once--I never even looked. I figured if it was as clean as the rest of the Y, then they probably hadn't changed the water since 1978. It is pretty dirty and gloomy. I also overheard casual racism from some older members. Wouldn't recommend it.

We need to stop going there. There is an extreme need to renew, to modernize. It's unhealthy. I know the building is very old, but it's about time it was improved.

Long story short. It's got everything you need that a YMCA can offer! But it's all in dire need of renovation and a major cleanup!

The price is right and the location can't be beat. Are there that many places I can walk five minutes to lift weights, swim, and do my cardio? I will be sad if this place ever finds a new location. Is it fancy? No. Nobody expects the Y to be an Equinox. It's a community center. In the suburbs people sit in their cars for 20-30 minutes just to get to a gym or pool. I am very grateful for the Y.

Today I Came to get a subscription but the experience wasn’t good enough. The Front Desk assistant Gustavo Lazo asked me filled out a Form. Then he continues speaking by phone with her gf guess . In the mean time a second customer (white man) arrived asking for support . Gustavo immediately register him on the system without asking for any format. I was completely disappointed with that situation . Gustavo needs to have same Customer Service with all the people. He should improve ..

So dirty
- That awesome new cold tub they have? Never cleaned. Look at the pictures
- The steam room? Smells bad and filthly floor
- Sauna? Floor never cleaned
- Carpet (carpet!) in the changing room? If you put a damp white towel on the floor and step on it, it soaks through with brown filth

Wanted to try pickle ball. Paid 14 dollars for one court and 20 people waiting. Can’t practice here. You have to be experienced and willing to play with strangers. Not for beginners.

I walk past this place every day. One of their employees, Jimmy, has bumped into me on the sidewalk three times because he's not looking where he's going. This last time, he cussed me out, told me he works at the YMCA, very proud of it. Part of a bigger problem. The staff at this YMCA are always hanging out on the sidewalk, blocking the entire walking path. They will not move out of the way, cuss you out if you say something as neutral as excuse me. I can't imagine how they treat their members inside. Definitely NOT a family friendly environment.

You need to know what you’re getting into.
If you want a modern, clean, spacious gym with young progressive clientele, DO NOT JOIN
If you want a frozen time capsule of old Somerville with few people, cramped spaces, old equipment, a bunch of older Boston natives, a life guard who likely couldn’t save himself, and cheap membership, this is for you. I actually like it.

Old and small, like a 1940s gym. At first you might think just the building and facilities are old, but I was surprised to see an elderly man watching a Laurel and Hardy film in one of the small upstairs offices. This may also strain credulity, but believe it or not -- there is a man in an iron lung living in the basement. Wow! I really liked the quirkiness of the owner of this particular YMCA (a very nice guy), a brolic mustachioed man who typically wears pinstripe unitards.

It's literally just an old gym/pool. It reminds me of my old secondary school in England. People complaining about this place are bougie and probably never grew up working class. It's old and basic but seems to be roughly clean. I don't really know what more you can ask for.

Do NOT go here if you are going to use the pool or sauna. It's a weird maze of low ceiling hallways and filthy walls, lockers and staircases.
The jacuzzi looked so terrifying that I had to take a photo. I would be remiss if I neglected clarifying that the rest of the place actually looked worse.
My wife went to the women's "health center" side and the jacuzzi was just removed leaving an odd gaping hole. She was given vague directions and almost ended up in the men's dorm in her bathing suit while looking for the place.
How are they allowed to operate this bizzare place? Everything is run down.
I don't know if the monthly deal is somehow worth it (do they pay you to go there?) but the 12 dollar guest pass was a surreally bad deal.

Yes the building was built in 1903, the original moldings are in place, the staff are the most devoted-to-mission as any you will find, there is a familiar social center-feeling, the rates are affordable and the surfaces are keep clean and safe, the equipment is maintained. For those committed to exercising only in newly-constructed facilities, with high rates and with un-woke staff, the Somerville may not appeal.

I’ve been living in the area for a few months now, but had been avoiding this particular ymca due to the reviews. Today, I figured I’d give it a shot. It’s a gym, how bad could it be? The answer is pretty bad. I feel bad writing this, but this place really is gross. There’s no working TV’s, the cardio room has about 10 cardio machines in total, and they had 1 small fan going for people to cool off. I just felt really unsanitary the whole time. Somehow it also reeks of cigarettes in the basement as well?? Kind of strange for a fitness center.

The most disgusting gym I have ever been to. Looks like it’s never been cleaned or updated. Locker rooms are absolutely horrifying and gym equipment is very old and worn out. The “classes” offered are in a room that’s also a day care so it’s messy, dirty and smells like cigarette smoke! The Zumba classes are pretty good and the yoga class is just ok. Would not recommend to anyone!!

I do think that the facility could benefit from a remodel, but the space itself suits my needs. I swim and lift a few times a week in the early morning. The other patrons that I’ve encountered are polite and friendly, which makes me feel very comfortable as a frequently lone lady lifter. The staff has been able to address all of my needs and questions that have come up so far. I’ve yet to meet any rude people. Honestly, it feels like more of a community than other gyms I’ve been to in the Boston area.
With the lower monthly fee and the small monthly donation I give, I’m still paying less than other memberships I’ve had previously. I feel like I’m getting what I’m paying for. I think the Somerville Y is a good fit for you if you’re more focused on your training goals than quality of facility.
I’ve been going to the Y for about six months now and have yet to have a bad experience. I hope I can say the same in another six months!

This place is a nightmare of a gym. The workout spaces are ancient, cramped, and poorly designed. The facilities are utterly obsolete, and nearly everything is filthy. The basketball gym is tiny and has an ancient, angled "track" above it. The weight room has not been updated since the 70s, and the weights are foul. There is no working AC.
The staff there seem to be proud of the fact that they get no funding from YMCA nationally. I hope they're doing some kind of good community work, because their s**thole of a workout space won't attract anyone who can go anywhere else. I live five minutes' walk away and I go to the Cambridge Y.

I don't need fancy but I do need basic cleanliness. I signed up for an adult swim course not offered by my local YMCA where I am a member. I paid the non-member fee. I was stunned by the condition of the women's locker room... Very poor lighting and musty (moldy?). Very damp, wet floor. Water buckets everywhere in an attempt to capture some of the water leaking from the ceiling. The showers and bathrooms are also not clean. It made me question how sanitary the pool is? I almost walked out but I made myself stay for the class since I drove 40 minutes to get there. I enjoyed the class and the instructors but I cannot bring myself to return. I hope my fee will in some small way help to improve the condition of this facility. I love the YMCA but I am sad to see such a drastic difference in quality/cleanliness compared to the facilities I regularly use. Outdated, not fancy, in need of repairs/upgrading, etc is fine. Unsanitary and unsafe are unacceptable.

Definitely not a shiny LA Fitness or Equinox type of place. Look elsewhere if that's what you're looking for. Simple, effective facilities. In five years, I've only had great experiences dealing with staff, and customers are generally down-to-earth and unpretentious - there to work out, not to be seen working out.

I signed up and paid for a life guarding review class here. I show up (after being driven in from 15 miles away) only to find out the teacher hadn't bothered to check the signup sheet for my class and thought that there were no students. As a result, no teacher was present for my class. I had to go all the way back home and start the search process over for a new class. As a full time college student, this was the only class that could fit into my spring break, and I am beyond furious.
I made sure I would be reimbursed for my class that didn't happen, and I will never return to the Somerville YMCA for anything again.

The building and many of the furnishings are old and "you find yourself in a maze of twisty passageways." But the place is kept very clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. It is practically next door to City Hall and Somerville High School. The staff say it is very busy with high schoolers for an hour or so after school lets out (3:30pm) which I think is wonderful. They must have improved a great deal since the earlier reviews. I find it a bit quaint and a good, unpretentious place.
