I can’t say enough about how great my experience has been at TPS. Entering the gym as a complete novice lifter was a bit intimidating at first, there are a lot of seasoned lifters moving insane weights that at first seemed completely unattainable. The intimidation factor went away immediately, my experience has been nothing but positive. The instructors and members are incredibly supportive and kind, creating an environment that’s welcoming to everyone.

The “Big Lifts” group class with Russ has been awesome. I’ve learned so much about proper form, safety, and how to make real progress. I’ve added weight to all my major lifts and continue to get closer to achieving my fitness goals.

I highly recommend TPS to anyone, no matter your experience level. I’ll definitely be staying here for a long time.

My dad was a 2A proponent and owned several firearms, and I regret not taking an interest in them sooner when he was alive and healthy. It feels almost poetic that I took Murph's Learn to Shoot 1 Class on the first anniversary of his passing. Better late than never, and perhaps I can share this with my own sons when they become of age. I have taken 2 TPS Method Tactical classes so far, and I am going to take more, because I trust TPS and Murph to take me on this 2A journey.

Firearms are a little scary, but after taking these classes, I feel so much more comfortable and confident in handling them. My wife is also enjoying herself too, which is great!

Years ago I trained with TPS as a powerlifter and I became quite strong, but most importantly, I never injured myself once, because safety was paramount. I can honestly say this emphasis on safety carries over 1:1 to the TPS Method Tactical training classes.

I also love the fact that Murph's team is comprised of ex-lawmen or operators. I'd take learning from them over a "gravy seal" any day.

Also, there's Murph himself. Murph is part of a dying breed - an absolute professional who takes his craft 100% seriously, but himself - not so much. Never change, Murph!

This gym saved my life. Growing up in Chelsea, I grew up with a lot of misguided kids. Luckily, I started going to their location in Everett. I had the luxury of being able to work out alongside world class athletes since I was 13/14 years old and looked up to them. It kept me out of trouble and got me chasing to be stronger. Once I deadlifted 495, the next goal was 500. Then 505, so on and so forth.

Murph and Russ impacted my life in more than just the gym. They gave me life advice that extended years beyond measure and that’s why I’m farther ahead in life than some of my peers.

That’s why I came back @ 27 years old and it’s amazing to be back in this community and it’s like time didn’t pass. If you want to get stronger, healthier and wiser. TPS is your spot.

We attended the TPS Method Tactical Basic Firearms Safety Class. The TPS Method Tactical Basic Firearms Safety Class earns a **5-star rating** thanks to Murph's direct, no-nonsense approach. His training is **information-packed and efficient**, cutting out any unnecessary fluff.

Murph excels at emphasizing **risk management** and instilling a healthy respect for firearms as dangerous weapons that demand caution. There's no bravado; just **plain, straight talk** about your responsibilities, developing a safety plan, and ensuring all actions align with the law.

This **well-designed program** provides fundamental knowledge for individuals of all ages, preparing them for safe range practice and responsible firearm possession. It also offers numerous options for continued training, ensuring you're never a danger to yourself or others.

TPS gym has everything you'll need for any form of lifting related workouts. I like that you can freeze your account in case you're not going for a while.

I've been doing powerlifting for almost two years with coach Russ Smith. Since then I've noticed great improvement in strength and technique. Russ is an excellent coach who clearly knows his stuff, and he will adapt the workout to your body proportions, current strength and any ongoing injury or health concern.

This is the place to go if you're serious about working out and reaching your peak performance. They have staff that know how to maximize your reps, target train muscle groups, as well as teach you the proper techniques in power lifting. All the equipment & years of experience you'll need to push past what you thought was possible. This is not a corporate gym, this is where real PRO'S go.

I joined the 531 program at TPS over three years ago. I can't recommend it enough if you're interested in learning or progressing towards your powerlifting goals. Coach Russ has many many years of experience both as a powerlifter and trainer and it shows, he's very mindful of the individual needs and safety of each lifter in the program, I've been injury free all this time without stalling my progress and improving my maxes.

All in all, TPS is a great gym for barbell and strongman style sports, it has all the niche equipment you may need for any of those disciplines, which is quite rare, in my experience.

I joined TPS ~1 year ago at the recommendation of friends as I had a goal to train for my first triathlon and gain upper body strength. I can't stress enough that this was the best decision for my health I made in 2024! As someone with minimal lifting experience, I was at first nervous- but the community at TPS is absolutely top notch. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable and work with you on your specific aims, providing direction and feedback to ensure you reach your goals both short and long term. The members of the programs are friendly and it is inspiring to see the variety of athletes who train here. I'm very happy I found this gym as it has totally transformed how I approach wellness: am stronger every day!

I have been a member of TPS for 3 months now, and I cannot say enough good things about this gym. As someone who is new to weightlifting, I have often found gyms intimidating, and initially, I did find TPS intimidating. I could not have been more wrong. The most beneficial aspect of this gym is not every piece of equipment you can imagine, but it is its community of members and trainers. The experience of the training team is unrivaled. With a wide variety of training available there is something for everyone, from larger group classes to individual one-on-one training, there is no shortage of knowledge in this building. I cannot say a enough good things about the team here and I am grateful for their expertise!

One of the best gyms in the Boston area. Includes a wide variety of strongmen, weightlifting, and powerlifting equipment. There are lots of power racks, deadlift platforms/jacks, monolifts, and a combo rack + calibrated/bumper/iron plates with a wide variety of dumbbells (up to 130lbs!). Staff and other members are very friendly. If you're around the area, you should definitely check TPS out!

I would highly recommend this gym. All of the personnel are very knowledgeable and friendly. I had had back problems for years. I had seen a back surgeon who told me I would just be in pain until I couldn’t take it any longer and then I would come back to him for surgery. I visited Murph at TPS and signed up for some personal training. He helped me develop my core strength and I never looked back. Not only have I been back pain free, but I’ve not needed surgery! Total Performance Sports specializes in strength training for life. Go see the staff at TPS. You’ll be glad you did!

I love this gym! I joined about 5 years ago as a woman in my mid-40s with no lifting experience. The Method program has been awesome! All of the coaches are fantastic - excellent teachers, supportive, and constantly watching/correcting your form. The staff and other members are also wonderful. This gym produces competitive powerlifters and strongmen but also has created a great community for anyone looking to get strong and healthy.

TPS helped me grow as an athlete and become strong inside and out. When I set the goal of competing in a strongman competition, I knew I would need guidance and a supportive community to achieve that goal. You don't always find both in the same place, but TPS provides that and MORE! I gained knowledge my from coach Mike as well as the other staff Murph, Erica, Candace, Matt, Russ, and Phil to name a few. When I reached out inquiring for training, I was immediately responded to and connected with a coach I could work with the same week. I not only signed up personal training but stuck with it for my entire length of membership time because it played such a vital role in my overall well-being.

I learned what it meant to be strong both inside and out because you simple cannot just "look strong" to be a strong man competitor, you have to BE STRONG! They all prepared me physically and mentally for my events and for each of my personal best record attempts in every lift I wanted to excel in. Many of my viewpoints on strength were challenged which is great because how else can you grow as an athlete if you are not learning?! Double win. Not to mention all the awesome members who also train there and love to take others under the wing and offer tips and advice on how to crush your lifts or simply egg you on as you attempt a PR.

The support they provided during the pandemic with training blocks designed around the equipment I had helped me cope with my own mental health issues as well keep me ready for events once the new normal started. Not to mention the great lengths they went through to stay open as long as possible with the worlds restrictions making things difficult. It showed me how much they cared for their members as well as the community of lifters who all train there.

The ONLY reason I am unable to still train here regularly is because I have moved out of New England. However, each time I return for a visit, you better believe I'm getting a lift in at TPS MALDEN! If you are in the Boston area, I cannot recommend them enough. Even if you're an hour drive away like I was, STILL worth every moment and dollar.

TPS represents the best parts of small businesses and small gyms specifically - The staff is there to help you and are experts who practice what they preach on a daily basis, the equipment is varied and well-suited for nearly any strength/conditioning goals, and the owner, Murph, is constantly hosting charity competitions, toy drives, carwashes, etc, to support the local community. After being a member here for 6 years I can say that I have met some incredible people (and dogs), gotten stronger and healthier, and most importantly, I know that my money has gone towards a local business and not a giant corporation. I encourage you to stop by and find out for yourself why there are so many positive reviews for this place and so many members that have been coming for years!

TPS is the OG Strength gym and barbell club of Boston. All the greats in the area have either come out of this place or from those who have come out of this place under Murph’s watchful eye. It is a gym for real athletes and serious lifters, yet welcomes all and encourages them to push themselves past their limits. Moreover, they host events giving proceeds to charities or other causes with members donating their time. Murph and crew are legends. Thank you for all you have done for strength in the Northeast, Nationally, and Internationally.

You can tell when an owner cares about their business. Murph, and the entire TPS staff are the best of the best when it comes to coaching, training people and just running a gym in general. What more could you ask of a gym? Not only that, but they give back to the lifting and local community, proving that they actually care and are not in it for just monetary gain. I started training here in June and it has changed my life. I joined the TPS Method class, which allows you to follow a program created and developed in TPS, with in-person group coaching.
I never trained with weights before and did not know much about how to do anything but the NMO (new member orientation) was great to have. For the first couple of weeks the coach guided me through the warm up and patiently showed/taught me the main three movements (squat, overhead press and deadlift) along with other supplementary exercises. During class the coach observes your set up, form and movement individually and gives you comments on how to improve. Something I really love is having to keep a journal of my training days, which is encouraged by the coaches and necessary to track progress and other things.
They also send monthly emails with a calendar for conditioning.
You can schedule your classes through the TPS app to your convenience. The training groups have been reduced to comply with COVID-19 Safety protocols.

For people intrested on just a regular membership, the gym is just gret. Come see some stroooong people lift!

Really great place

I would give it a 9.7/10, only 2 things that I would improve upon

1. A water bubbler would be great

2. Maybe some newer bumper plates? As a weightlifter I basically only use bumper plates. Now obviously this is a powerlifting gym that caters to the powerlifting/strongman crowd, but there are still nice platforms for weightlifting and bumper plates. My only issue is that these plates are slightly cracked (which is inevitable) but I think some newer colored bumper plates wouldn’t hurt.

Other than that, I really love this place! There really aren’t any better gyms around

As a strongman competitor just weeks out from a major contest, I was worried about finding a gym at which to train while traveling away from home.
TPS not only met the level of my normal training facility back in GA but may have even exceeded it.
I have never seen a facility with so much equipment. 100% worth the price of admission and braving the Boston traffic to get back in town for my conference.

Total Performance Sports is a powerlifter’s paradise. From every piece of equipment you could ever want (+ way more), to the highest quality coaching, there is nothing left to be desired at TPS. Open gym membership is a great opportunity for those who feel competent in their abilities to train in an ideal environment that supports all your fitness needs and training styles. For those who need instruction from a knowledgable coach, or simply need the accountability of having a coach in your corner - this is the place to be. These coaches work hard but effortlessly to ensure you progress toward your fitness goals, while limiting any chance of injury. I workout in the open gym and do one-on-one training. Even as somebody with extensive education in everything fitness related, there isn’t a day that my coach at TPS has not taught me new things that I can implement into my training to more efficient and effective in progressing toward my goals. The attention to detail is so necessary for anybody trying to perform at their highest level. I definitely recommend this gym to powerlifters looking to compete and optimize their lifts, as well as active adults who are looking to get hyper-focused on progressing their fitness goals and overall physical capacity.

This gym is the best!! I learned every proper technique I needed to know from the coaches here. I learned how to get stronger and tried new things I never knew my body could do. If you need help learning how to use equipment you can ask any available coach to assist you. I've made friends here, I gained training partners and started powerlifting competitions with those same people. It's been an amazing ride and I can't wait to see where it takes my body. TPS shows you if you put in the work you'll get the results. Also there's a wealth of knowledge on recovery which many gyms pay no attention to. Great coaching really gets detailed on your technique, especially candace I’ve honestly been more consistent since being on the women’s powerlifting team here, I’ve grown and learn to not just do it for me but my team and we push each other... besides the music (lol) there’s a strong range of discipline and excitement when I come in there after my 3rd gym I’m glad I was introduced to TPS. I’ve grown as an athlete and competitor.!

I liked this place and the staff is welcoming and friendly. I used to go to this gym. What i like about this place is the staff and the gym members would help you out with a workout if needed and they would check with you sometimes if you had questions about it. Overall this place is nice.

The best gym with an incredible staff. They're passionate about getting you to reach your goals and break personal records safely . You'd be cheating yourself if you didn't at least see what they have to offer.

Been training here for over a year doing TPS Method and am stronger than I've ever been and more conditioned than ever. The staff are top notch, extremely knowledgeable, and are very supportive. Murph runs the best gym I've ever been to.

A gym full of top notch equipment, and people who all encourage one another to hit PR's, just a really positive environment and highly recommended.

This is the best strength training, strongman and personal training facility in greater Boston. The equipment is great, friendly and knowledgeable trainers and members take their training seriously.

After spending time at many of the gyms in the area, I ended up going with Total Performance Sports. Their facility is unmatched - the equipment for compound movements is top-notch. With equipment like the Buffalo bar and safety squat bar in addition to the straight bar, training is more effective than other gyms. They dont clutter the area with resistance machines, instead opting for more benches, platforms, and power racks. Additionally, the training they offer is unlike anything else in the Greater Boston area. If you want to learn how to be a more effective barbell athlete, this gym is not AN option--it's the only option.

Great training environment for serious strength athletes. Vastly different from commercial type gyms and even other independent gyms; everyone here trains with focus and intensity which creates a great environment for heavy lifting. Enough equipment to cater to strongman, olympic lifting and powerlifting. Lots of different bars, implements, chalk, and benches. Staff has gone above and beyond to help on multiple occasions. Plenty of parking.

While living in Everett, I used to visit this gym. It has a traditional or archaic looking set up. There is a free parking space available for the visitors. Besides metal plates and rods, a varieties of cardio equipment are available at this gym including step ladder, treadmill etc. However, gym related modern equipment are few compared to similarly priced other gyms.

I went in with high hopes, I really did. Customer service is extremely impersonal and lax. They could care less about your goals or expectations. If you're looking to "get big" this is the place to go, but if you're looking to get guidance and support while you work on your goals, there are better and cheaper places in Malden.

Today was my very first day in this facility. I got the 7 day free trial and boy this was a really good experience. Hands down the best gym in the Boston area, it has all these cool powerlifting equipment that I am excited to start using. Once my 7 day trial is up I'm going to sign up immediately.

The best gym I've ever been in. This is NOT like other meathead bro gyms where you have people curling in the squat rack or flexxing in the mirrors.

Its more like a club, where coaches and fellow patrons are part of a friendly community. Everyone (coaches, staff, and patrons) is courteous, respectful, helpful, and encouraging. Everyone re-racks weights and no one plays with their phones (except for training purposes!). Everyone in the gym is laser-focused on training without intimidating the novices.

They offer some free classes on a regular basis, and a variety of coaching options in classes, clinics, and solo or group personal training. I have taken advantage of a few of their clinics and found them to be very informative and helpful in my training. I have worked with almost every coach in the gym at least once, and they are all great at what they do.

Highest recommendation, I could never imagine going back to a chain franchise gym after joining TPS.

After being a member for a few months and attending a two of their monthly training days I have nothing but positive things to say about the gym, the other members, the staff, and the overall culture of the place. Coaches are extremely knowledgeable and ready to help you meet your strength training goals. Learned more from my few months in this gym than years at chain gyms.

I literally just left TPS but had to get on here to leave this review. Absolutely TERRIBLE TERRIBLE customer service. I have been working with customers for 18 years and I would never even dream of treating ANYONE the way i was treated in there. I came in with my fiancé who use to box in this gym back when it was in its first location in Everett. He wanted to get information and ask about his old boxing coaches and look into what the gym has to offer now (5 years later). From the get go, Shar(whatever her name is) at the front desk was EXTREMELY rude full of attitude. She wouldn't even let my fiancé explain why he was there; she kept interrupting saying "okay well what's your question?" I was ready to walk out right after this but I stayed for the tour because I knew how strongly my fiancé felt about this gym. She rushed us barely explaining the gym rooms and their functions, bossing us around by telling us where to stand and get out of people's way. Like seriously lady? You have two potential customers who I can promise will be the largest reason you GET paid and you push us out the door like that. She then pointed to the "personal training room" and simply said that's off limits and didn't even show us the room. I SPECIFIED THAT I WAS LOOKING INTO PERSONAL TRAINING! Absolutely bizarre. And to top it off she didn't even conclude the tour. She simply walks off and starts talking to someone who she obviously takes more serious simply because they may have been a customer and we weren't yet ....I am aware that Murphy is the owner, so Murphy ...please set your gym straight and take everyone seriously because it's terrible to make someone feel the way your receptionist made us feel. Losing valuable customers is never a good thing. I truly wish my experience was not the way it was.

All the reviews below (that are 5 star) are all the same as i would have written, but i'd like to add a little bit extra. The gym is definitely a zero frills gym. 100% zero. A lot of the people that go there are extremely serious as their physique show. They play hard rock a lot making it seem quite macho.

DON'T LET THIS SCARE YOU AWAY!!! I'm new to working out and i've loved every visit.

Everyone in this gym has been extremely helpful. The staff is VERY helpful. They are patient and professional. I'm not sure how this gym manages to select such great staff, but keep it up!

In terms of the environment, which may scare some people away, don't let it! The guys are all very helpful. If someone isn't training hard and i ask questions they are very open to helping out. The nice thing about the people that go there is that people don't stare at all. I'm pretty small and i've notice zero staring. everyone respects where everyone starts, which is really critical to new people like me. The music can be a bit intimidating at first, but honestly i've gotten used to it and even like it now! It helps to get my energy up. Also, a lot of people in the gym seem to know each other which really adds to the community feel. Some of the staff seem to know the names of some people and not just the guys who are bodybuilding/Olympic weight lifting, but people who are new to the life like me. It really gives a lot of comfort. To give an example when i signed up for the gym the front desk manager offered up personal training (in a VERY non-pushy way... just letting me know it was available) i signed up. Well the next time i came in a few days later she asked if I've been called yet and i wasn't. turns out i was emailed promptly not called, but it was really great of her to remember and just adds to the community feel.

Honestly this gym is hands down the best gym i've ever been to. Can't say enough about this place!

Came in from out of town and visited TPS today. Admittedly based on short experience but this is a great facility for those who want a variety of lifting and cardio options. One of the best fitness centers I have visited and I wish we had one in Kansas City. Very friendly, helpful and professional staff! Thank you TPS for having a great facility and making me feel welcome.

The best gym in Boston, it needs repeating. I've never felt so clear-headed and ready to push myself that in this gym.. The set up inside is designed for one purpose; getting strong. My only regret is not signing up sooner.
