We’ve had the best time and great results at Underground. My wife and I work out together once per week and I do a separate day on my own. Our trainer gave us 3 detailed workouts to do during the week and he varies the things we do together, so it’s always fun and interesting.
I have been working out on my own for years and really plateaued. Having professional help makes a huge difference. I thought I was reasonably fit…i wasn’t. Now, I am strong in places i didn’t know i had muscles!

I started working with Joe early this year. I am 57 and have had some back and SI joint issues. Joe has been absolutely fantastic. He has developed a program for me that has tremendously enhanced my core strength and my back pain is gone. He has focused on the kind of strength training that improves my functioning and helps avoid injury. In addition this training has transformed my body as I have lost weight and toned up. He is a wonderful motivator and keeps me accountable. I look forward to our workouts each week. He is a lovely person and is very caring. I can’t say enough good words for Joe Howard and underground fitness. Having him as a personal trainer is a real investment in my health and happiness! Thank you Joe!!

I've been training at Underground Fitness 2-3x a week for over 5 years now, and I've worked with nearly every trainer, most recently Dana at the new Washington Street location. I love doing single leg balance and strength exercises, and in our first session together, Dana came in prepared with a great mix of squats and lunges that challenged me (with a little core work to round it out) and was super attentive the entire time - demoing every exercise and counting my reps for me. I could tell really quickly that Dana loves fitness and loves teaching fitness.
When I think back on whether it's been worth the 500+ sessions I've done at UF, I'm absolutely positive I wouldn't be half as strong as I am today if I'd been working out alone. When I came to UF I could barely do barbell squats due to mobility issues, and instead of avoiding those movements, the trainers at UF figured out how to help me work past them, and now I'm doing deep front squats, power cleans, single-leg cleans, heavy turkish getups, kettlebell halos on a balance beam... so many exercises I'd never have imagined doing have just become normal parts of my routine. I really think Underground Fitness is one of the best gyms in Boston right now.

I’ve loved working out at Underground Fitness these last 5 years! At 85 years old I always feel safe and heard. The trainers have always given great workouts and positive energy. When I have an injury or a pain I can confidently show up to my session knowing the trainers will know exactly what to do. I can’t say anything I don’t like about it, I recommend this place to everybody!

I’ve been working out at Underground Fitness for 5 years. Working out with the trainers here has become the best part of my week! After working out for 40 years I thought getting injured was just part of working out. I’ve been able to get stronger, look better, feel better, all without injury! They make the workouts fun and different so you’re never bored and the space is private, comfortable, and non intimidating. I can’t recommend training here enough!

I’ve been training with Joe at Underground Fitness for 2 years, and the experience has been incredible. Joe and the entire UF team are top-notch—every program is personalized to your goals, mobility, and rehab needs rather than just a cookie-cutter routine.
When I first started, I struggled with frequent shoulder and neck pain. Thanks to Joe, my shoulder is now stronger than ever, the pain is gone, and I’m more motivated to train consistently and push myself. I have gotten noticeably stronger and, more importantly, my mobility and energy have substantially improved and I feel great overall without the aches and pains I used to get.
The new location is fantastic! It’s well-designed and fully equipped, while still keeping the same welcoming, personalized atmosphere that makes UF so special.

I have used Underground Fitness since it began, having worked with its founder, Joe Howard, for a number of years. Joe screens trainers for a combination of technical competence and an ability to shape and design programs to meet clients’ individual goals. It is not surprising that there are often waitlists for access to Underground Fitness’ trainers. If you are looking for a customized, more holistic approach to fitness training, then you should explore Underground Fitness.

Joe and the trainers at Underground Fitness are incredible, hands down the best trainers I’ve had (I’ve used personal trainers off and on for ~15 years). I was a client of UF for two and a half years (3 days a week) and the only reason I don’t still train with them is that I moved out of state. Joe was my primary trainer, but I worked with all of them at least once during my two years there and this is the most knowledgeable, kindest and supportive group. Their ability to train everyone, no matter their age, fitness level, or gym experience, is impressive and a testament to their experience and professionalism in the field.
I started working with UF in 2021 after my second child was born and I noticed my core/pelvic floor strength was weak, I was having back pain, and was generally out of shape. My first day in the gym, Joe listened to my goals and took me through a set of exercises to baseline my strength and comfort in the gym. From there, we got to work.
Being in a dedicated personal training gym is amazing, the equipment is in excellent condition and the trainers setup exercises, coach, and clean up seamlessly so every minute of time is used (no wasted time walking across a big gym, waiting for a weight rack to become available etc). The software they use to plan workouts and track goals and progress keeps the sessions focused; you can also ask for your progress by the numbers anytime.
However, for me, the biggest thing that kept me showing up to UF was the trainers… they are such a likable bunch, you don’t want to let them down. I started eating better when I was with them bc I knew they would ask how I was fueling my body to get stronger. I worked hard during my sessions because if the trainer was spending their evening building my workout plan, I was going to get through it. If I went on a walk outside the gym the trainer would like it in my Health app (I gave them access to see my workouts, it helped me stay motivated). The first time I got through a minute of jump rope without my pelvic floor failing the trainer was nearly as excited as I was. Having friends in fitness, who helped me stay accountable and cared almost as much as I did about my goals, made a huge difference in my progress. I gained muscle, lost fat, and saw many functional improvements. I still miss this gym and these trainers almost two years after moving, although I’ll still, even now, get likes from Joe in my Health app after I finish a workout.
