We love Aqua Tots Berkley! The staff is wonderful from scheduling , management and instructors. The facility is always clean and pool area warm. Our daughter went from not waiting to put her face in the water to volunteering to jump in first in weeks! All the coaches have been attentive, fun and knowledgeable. Major kudos to Colton, Isabella, and Ibraheem for being the kindest instructors that get the best out the kids. Also Carissa & Andrea always greet us with a smile and pump my daughter up for class! We started at this location June of 2025. The initial intake identified my son as close to the age cutoff for level 3. All questions were about submersion comfort; no safety or water-boundary concerns were addressed. I was talked into buying two a la carte classes for consistency. No free class was offered, and we weren’t told the location would be closed the first week of July—negating any consistency. I shared that my son had a chronic condition and that I had anxiety and wanted my husband present for his first class. The staff pushed until I agreed to come alone.

When we arrived, I didn’t know my son would be in the water without me. I had a panic attack and froze. The front desk staff kept talking at me and became defensive. When I said I hadn’t understood, I was told, “Well, I talk fast, maybe you didn’t hear me.” No accountability—just blame on me. Could I have checked the website? Sure, but after this, I reached out to a friend in the industry (20+ years experience), and she was shocked. She said she’d never put a child under 3 in a pool alone without making sure the parents understood and were prepared.

I moved forward because my son loves the water. They told me he’d have to move up in a month. I couldn’t process the tour due to the panic attack I had disclosed. The instructor confirmed what I had tried to explain to the desk staff—he wasn’t ready for level 3. They suddenly “overrode” the system to keep him in level 2. I later saw an error in the app. It took 5 phone calls to fix it, and I was overbilled and needed a refund.

I tried to give it another chance, assuming my discomfort stemmed from the first interaction. But I was mostly ignored by front desk staff and unimpressed with level 2. Though explained as boundary-focused, classes shifted toward submersion. Some instructors adjusted when we spoke, but there was no consistency due to frequent subbing. One week, 10 toddlers and 12 adults were crammed into one lane while the rest of the pool sat empty.

After completing a customer survey where I shared honest feedback about feeling pushed and that the program seemed more profit-driven than child-centered, I received a call. I couldn’t talk, and though they promised to call back Monday, it took nearly two weeks.

I told his regular instructor I wasn’t comfortable with him moving up based solely on age and wanted a conversation first. Still, when my husband brought him alone, they moved him up with no discussion. My son seemed bored in level 2, so we gave level 3 a try. The class went well, and a customer service staff member approached us to ask about our experience. I was honest and also named staff I appreciated. For the first time, I felt heard. She said the owner would likely want to follow up.

After class, the owner stomped over and demanded we speak with her after dressing our son. She clearly initiated the conversation upset/confrontational. She focused the exact date of an earlier call and became visibly frustrated. I tried to explain our experience, but she repeatedly cut me off, blamed me for not communicating (despite my survey response), and refused to acknowledge any possible mistakes. When I mentioned my son hadn’t learned boundaries (meaning pool specific), she interrupted and lectured me on how to teach them at home. She kept repeating things like “So you wasted your money?” and “What do you want me to do?” I wasn’t demanding anything—just trying to share concerns. Her tone was condescending, and the entire exchange felt hostile. It was deeply unsettling.

It’s okay for leaders to be upset by feedback, but this was unacceptable. Her lack of professionalism/emotional maturity makes me question what’s happening behind the scenes. My husband and I left feeling like we’d been pushed out so she didn’t have to acknowledge any issues.

I rarely leave negative reviews. I have 15+ years in education and social work with children and older adults. I usually give grace—but from the start, something felt off. In my experience, leaders who react this way are more concerned with appearance than safety.

My son has been at Aqua tots in Berkley for almost 2 years. I gave my 30 day notice to dis-enroll him because he wanted a break. They removed him from his coach class that he had for the last 2 months and placed him with a coach he never had for his the next two weeks and put another kid in his place. He literally just had the coach the day before.When I called , they had no rhyme or reason of why they did it. No warning or anything if I wouldn't want on the app we would have been surprised to see that we wasn't with his coach. I'm very disappointed in reaching out to corporate.

I am very happy with my choice to go with Aqua-Tots for my two sons swim lessons. The front desk staff are personable, thoughtful and patient, and the coaches have been wonderful; firm yet fun and kind. They have been extremely supportive of our swim journey; from patiently accommodating my Autistic son's special needs by having us come in to open swim to get him more comfortable in the water, to being able to handle my precocious handful of a 3 year old with grace and joy. My 20 month old has been at this aquatots since he was about 5 months (with a small break at some point) & we love it. We’ve had a few different coaches and loved them all, they know our son by name which he loves and we love. The nature of these places is it can feel rushed to get in and out and lessons can feel over-generalized at first but once you’re settled in with a good coach then they know how to work with you and your child individually, you just have to give it some time for them to get to know your kid and know their skills. We’re still in classes where the parent swims too but still feel safe with the coaches.

This review not related to lessons - but open swim on Fridays is awesome! Practically no kids at all, $10 for up to 6 people. Tons of floaties and toys (and giant foam paddle canoes 😳). They even lent me a towel when I forgot mine. Warm pool, excellent showers, perfect spot when weather is bad or the kids need something to do for a couple hours.

We could not be happier with Aqua Tots in Berkley. My son is almost 2 and has been attending weekly classes since he was 4mo old. He has made so much progress and absolutely loves coming to swim. My son loves coming to swim lessons here! The staff is super friendly and the curriculum is easy to follow. I have seen a lot of progress with my son over the last month or two since starting, and even with my son's shyness he is warming up to the coaches and giving them high-fives and trusting them more and more. They really make things like check-in easy, lots of changing rooms so you never have to wait even when it's busy and they are always on time with their classes.

Update: about a year later. My son moved up to level 3 class on his own and still loves it! Never wants to leave at the end of class.

Aqua Tots in Berkeley is amazing. We have been taking our son here since April 2023. He is currently a level seven. Level 6 is considered a safe swimmer. We were up north in a cabin near Lake Superior. Harry was swimming along the shore, in the Au Train River and even jumping from a pontoon boat into Lake Au Train and swimming in 30 feet of water.
The staff is always helpful, kind and all around amazing.

Our family loves the Berkley Aqua Tots. From the first time you walk into the building the staff is SO kind and welcoming, and very informative. The instructors are wonderful, and the people who work up front are amazing also. They all know every kids name and greet you as you come in or as they are walking around working hard! Our child hit a rough patch and had a skill that he was afraid of and one of the women up front saw that he was upset, got him feeling comfortable and right away linked him up with one of the extra instructors to work on it for the first part of his group class. Aqua tots is so great about accommodating busy schedules and have no problem with needing to change schedules - whatever it takes to get kids in the pool and learning to swim. My older child didn’t start lessons until he was nearly 7 years old and in 1 year he became a safe swimmer, able to swim unattended in a pool. My younger child is still working on it, but he has developed the sweetest relationship with one of the instructors and aquatots makes sure that he can always be in her class.

It feels like a good safe environment with a comprehensive swim program. I’ve loved all the coaches we’ve encountered - they are very knowledgeable, encouraging and patient. I love that they have a little postings telling you about the coaches and what they like. Sometimes I do a make up class. I’ll go over to the board and show my child. Something that they have in common with the new coach. The pricing structure is good. The class availability is good; nice clean facilities. I love the easy communication, billing and scheduling via the app. The staff has reached out several times to check in and encouraging us to come back when we took a pause - very understanding of challenges I had getting my little one comfortable and excited to return.

We signed up our son a few years back for 2x weekly and while he was comfortable in the water, he wasn’t quite ready for listening so we took a pause. I signed up for the Stay Connected program to keep swim familiar. After 2 unsafe pool incidents I immediately re-enrolled him. It’s been 2 weeks since re-enrolled and I see a huge improvement. We now found the right times, frequency and instructor. He’s been excited about going and working towards graduating.

Overall I like the facility; it’s always clean and organized (efficiently go through routine of line ups at door/call name/enter & exit pool/shower). Group class sizes are small (max 4). Other places like the Y are cheaper but limited times and large class size. Classes are in an enclosed space so we can’t hear them but I see very positive, encouraging interactions with kids and coaches. My son loves Coach Sam and now Coach Rachel. He loves being rewarded with a little snack after. They have a small convenience section at the front as well as some swim items; many times I’ve had to get an extra bathing suit or a swim shirt, pair of goggles etc and it’s so great to just charge right to my account. Overall, I’m happy with the pricing structure as well for what I’m getting it’s definitely worth the investment.

After class you’re supposed to get a swim report; we’ve gotten them periodically not each time which is fine. Based on that they give recommendations for things to work on at home like blowing bubbles or putting face in water. I’ve been watching their videos on Facebook and doing the practice poses (Chicken starfish rocket) with him in preparation for swim. I’m looking for to him being a strong swimmer.

Aqua tots has been phenomenal in teaching my kids how to swim. When we joined the aqua tots family, we only had one kid and honestly, I was nervous about her being alone in the water and wanted to pull her out to enroll her when she gets older. Tiffany the GM was assuring that she would thrive in these classes and followed up the following weeks making sure that she was comfortable and making strides towards success. She has been very active during the process and continues to support. The coaches at this location are phenomenal and take an active interest in making the kids confident and skilled swimmers. I cannot begin to say enough praise about this specific Aqua-Tots facility in Berkeley Michigan. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by the friendliest staff. The most clean and professional location. They take incredible pride in training, your children and swim safety. And they go above and beyond. I have been going here for almost 2 years and they know us by name. They know what my children like and dislike. One day my daughter was having a full-blown meltdown and Tiffany came over and distracted her a very difficult situation so much easier for an overwhelmed mom to of toddlers. . Berkley location is where we have classes. We love everything about it, from the management all the way to the trainees. Everyone is super friendly and they really become friends with all the families. My child has had several swim coaches and has liked them all. Everyone always steps in to help, especially with the crying little babies and toddlers are afraid to go in the pool. The staff is so great about getting them comfortable. Facility is clean and they have several days and time slots available to fit anyone’s schedule.

This is specifically feedback pertaining to the swimming classes for babies and toddlers. I had my child do classes for about a year from the age of around 1-2. She is now 3 years old and has a severe fear of water going on her head, and I believe it was due to this class. They make you submerse your child under the water. Some children have no problem with this and seem totally unfazed. However, my child was fearful, and it was obvious. The teachers need to be trained in identifying this fear and stop trying to push them into doing it. Being submersed into water is a benchmark on their report card. When these steps are monitored by a report card it puts pressure on the parents and the teachers to make their child perform in order to make progress. Sometimes, teachers can feel as if they are not doing their job adequately if their students are not meeting their benchmarks. This is the impression I got from these teachers. But seriously, a report card for a 1 or 2 year old?? Are we serious? I understand this swim class has a methodology, and they want a way to track progress, but is it really necessary? They need to reconsider progress reports for babies or be trained to work at the pace of each child and share the student’s special info in the notes on their profiles in their system so that other teachers can see, since the teachers vary so frequently.

I’m glad I followed my intuition and pulled my daughter out of class to go swimming at the gym instead, and let her voluntarily explore the water on her own instead of putting her in fearful scenarios. When I explained to the person at the desk that that’s why I was quitting, she tried to give me some sales person schpiel about how important it was to keep her in the program and they would hold a place for me and yada yada, all while completely ignoring my concerns.
I now have a 3 year old that can swim on her own from getting lots of practice at the gym, but at the same time refuses to take a shower and goes into a traumatic breakdown when she has to wash her hair. Hopefully this feedback helps save some children from the same trauma in the future.

I started taking my son to Aqua Tots at 4 months old. He is now 7yrs old and we’ve been to 3 different locations. We recently transferred to Berkley from the Farmington location (which was a hot mess!). Just walking in the door is a huge difference and the way everything is set up just makes you smile. It’s just so inviting! I was wondering if they sold the wet bags and the general manager, Tiffani was so kind enough to just give me one. She even saw my squirmy little 1-yr old and gave him a tiny little rubber shark. She was truly amazing! And even spent time talking to me about how she really wants to ensure consistency in the teachers and the school which is so reassuring. That has never happened before!

We have been going to this location for a few months now. We enrolled our then 6 month old in the tadpoles class. Carissa and Drea have been the most helpful and supportive staff to my family since we started last year in November. They have been not only super responsive to parents, they are also super nice to kids. They do actually pay attention to kids who are in the pool and provide progress advice to parents.
A big shout out to coach Isabella, coach Katrina, and coach Sarah! They are patient and listen to the kids in the pool when they have needs. I feel very comfortable leaving my toddler in the pool with them.

We started taking our son Sawyer who is 3 years old for swimming lessons in February, and he didn’t like it and didn’t want to go at all. He was crying and crying.

So we took a break for about a month and then started going back at a different location in Berkley so to meet up with a friend that was also taking the lessons.

The staff at this location is so kind and helpful and understanding with our son being scared and made him feel safe enough to finally shake it off and now he is doing great.

Thanks to Coach Leah and Coach Emily and all the people at the front desk, they are always so helpful and proactively stepping in if they need to, to help with anything.

They always greet our son by name right from the door and makes him feel welcomed and they are always cheering for him and giving him confidence.

We will keep him enrolled in these lessons there until he feels as if he doesn’t need lessons anymore.

We absolutely love it! The place is so clean, everyone is so helpful and nice, Drea is the best of the best at the desk. All the instructors the girls have had so far are very good with the kids, our favorites being Coach Leah and Coach Savannah, they are absolutely amazing and one can see their genuine interest on the kids learning journey. My husband was impressed to see the consistency when doing a makeup class, they all follow the program for their level. My daughter was enrolled here about a year and a half ago at age 3 and she had huge separation anxiety as well a a really big fear of going under water or really having water go near her face at all. Every lesson she threw a half hour long tantrum.
Were we asked to leave? No. Instead she was offered one on one sessions to help make her comfortable, they encouraged us to come to open swim sessions and every week she (and I) got a pep talk from the manager who really encouraged us to keep trying. We became well known and were always greeted by name and always felt welcome.

For personal reasons unrelated to her fears or the school we had to take a break from swim classes last spring.

2 weeks ago we started lessons again. She is now in Savannah’s class. Her first class, I asked Savannah to please only take her underwater if she agreed first. Without hesitation I reassured that they would go at my daughter’s pace and my daughter nervously followed her into the pool.

By the end of the first class my daughter agreed to go underwater and she came out beaming very proud of herself. On the way home she told me how much she liked Savannah and how she never wants any other teacher. 3 classes in, my daughter retrieved the diving ring from the bottom of the pool.

I've spent a year trying to get my daughter comfortable in water and still can’t rinse her hair in the tub without meltdowns and in 3 short classes Savannah has her excitedly diving under water. I can’t recommend this school or Savannah’s class more. I don’t understand how she made such huge progress in such a short time but she has a gift.

Great place to send your kids to learn how to swim. I knew I wanted to sign my 6 month old son up for swim lessons, but I was nervous since I didn’t know what to expect. However, aqua tots has eased my mind and has been great. We’ve only been a few times and I’m already noticing improvement and he has so much fun there. The staff is always welcoming and I love the fact that after each class they provide an aqua card (like a report card) so you can see how your child is progressing.
