We love Dyno! The staff is so nice/helpful, and the bouldering sets are really great - it seems like they take different style climbers into consideration, including shorter ppl :) also - anytime we have friends in town, we bring them to Dyno as it is very beginner friendly.

Drove over an hour to come here just to be told by a blonde, short-hair male manager that I smelled like weed and therefore couldn't be there. I told him I'm asthmatic and cannot smoke anything, let alone weed. He repeated that I had to leave due to a "no marijuana tolerance policy," and I responded again that I did not smoke. He repeated that it didn't matter and I had to leave anyway. There were multiple other customers around that it could have been. Terrible service due to him.

Dino quickly jumped on the treadmill issues I was having to get them ready for training in winter. Much appreciated. This gym takes care of their equipment and is far cleaner than many other climbing gyms, both with their training equipment and their holds, which they clean thoroughly and frequently. I like that they are setting crack climbs more often.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Fix the treadmill situation please. Have had it abruptly shut off several times at a mere 8:00 pace and ran into the bar. This is not safe especially when you factor in a hard incline. When you set it to 7:30 pace, it will randomly fluctuate in speed by up to 1mph! Sometimes it won't even hit 8:00, let alone if others are also running. 8:00 seems to be the absolute maximum for one treadmill.
It's been this way for almost two years and they said they would fix it like a year ago. Going to make it hard to train cardio here during the winter. Place seems to be able to afford new equipment... No reason to have 7 treadmills if they don't work for anyone trying to seriously train.
Apart from this I love the gym and would give 5 stars but as someone trying to train hard this is a big problem.

Brought my grandsons here for their 5th birthday! They couldn't wait to come after seeing pictures from when I brought their older brother here when he turned five! Facility and staff are outstanding, safety is impeccable, hardware and ropes are all in excellent shape and well maintained! We will be back soon! If your kids like climbing, it doesn't get any better than this!

I was here probably about a month ago and forgot to write a review. This is a very nice place, and very inclusive! It was a nice/fun environment. They also have a gym, which is pretty cool as well. I would definitely go back to this place. It wasn't overly priced and EXTRA points for having FREE feminine products in the bathroom. Very mindful, very demure lol. Thanks for everything.

The gym is Very nice and fairly clean. Though the owner doesn't seem to care about what members think. The grade accuracy is all over the place ( a v3 could be anywhere from a 1-6 and if a route says 5.10d it could range from a 5.8-an 11b/c). The head route setter doesn't take feedback either. If you are new to climbing you will have a blast but that is the only people that this gym really caters to. For the cost of a membership it would be nice if the very real issues that have been brought up were listened to. A "busy" gym doesn't mean everything is amazing. Take these 5 star reviews with a grain of salt.
Edit: Since writing this the grade balance has started to level out and the setters have done a good job of talking with members to get good opinions when new routes are put up. Grading is always difficult but they are starting to get a level scale even if they might not be 100% accurate.

I’m going to be honest, I had an absolute blast at this gym. The front desk staff were extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. This was my first time ever climbing, and they had nothing but patience. This was an awesome experience and I really enjoyed myself. Great selection of chilled beverages, great climbing walls, and awesome gym upstairs!

Was in town for a couple days and stopped in to boulder. Was nice and empty early in the morning with enough boulder problems to not be able to do them all in my grade range in a single visit. Next time hopefully will get on some autobelays or roped climbing.

Best climbing gym in the thumb. Great sets for bouldering and rope climbing that are reset on a 2 week schedule. Great air filtration and cleanliness, and they have showers! The upstairs features everything a climber could want for training sans campus board (Kilter board, spray wall, hang boards, etc) along with a plethora of general fitness equipment. LGBTQ+ friendly with gender neutral bathrooms available.
Update: The gym now features a TB2 board in spray layout. It replaced the spray board.

Nice facility. I would have given 5 stars except…There’s a policy that children under 13 need a non climbing supervisor, which is totally understandable since climbing is dangerous. But this policy apparently only applies to some people and whether or not your friends with the staff here. If you’re going have a policy it needs to apply to everyone. It was a total bummer watching literally every other parent climbing with their kids younger than mine.
*To respond to Dyno's response, no, there were no other "supervisors" present. Just Child/Parent duos like us. The only difference is that I was not friends with the staff. But thank you for responding.

Dyno Detroit isn’t just a rock climbing gym—it’s a second home. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with a level of hospitality and warmth that’s unmatched. The space is spotless, the atmosphere is electric, and the climbing is top-tier—but what truly sets Dyno apart is the people behind it.
The owner and staff care deeply—not just about the gym, but about *you*. It’s the kind of place where you can crush a session on the wall, then sit down with the owner afterward for a drink and real conversation. They’ve created a community, not just a facility. If you're looking for a climbing gym that feels like family, Dyno Detroit is it.

We had a great time here with family in town. The owner Dino and his staff are very safety focused and encouraging. The auto-belay system makes it so a lot of active climbing can happen without someone being belay certified on the ground while a climber is on the wall. This group of cousins are tween/teen aged kids and sometimes it’s hard to find an activity that all will enjoy- they asked to go back making a second visit in a week! Highly recommended!

Took my 10 and 8 year old here, and they loved it. Definitely recommend doing the video and waiver online before you go so you don't have to stand by the front doors and watch the video there and fill out the waiver forms(it's a little long). They only had 8 auto belay areas when we went, but they said they were getting two more added this upcoming week. Honestly, I don't think adding two more is even enough. There were lines for the auto belays the entire time we were there, but there were so many extra spots with regular belays that weren't being used at all. I feel like if have the gym were auto, it would make more sense and be a lot more beginner and kid friendly. Everyone we talked to was really nice and helpful, we didnt know anything due to it being our first time at a rock climbing place and everyone explained things nicely and made us fell welcome.Overall, we all liked it and had a blast. The only reason it misses the 5th star for me is due to not having enough for beginners, in my opinion.

I took my son rock climbing for the first time and it was such a great experience. We were treated by Dino as soon as we walked in and he helped us through the process the whole time we were there. This was a first for both me and my son and Dino made us feel very comfortable and even helped us. But push ourselves to new heights. I can honestly say this experience was more than expected and we will definitely be returning. We also got to meet Pig (the dog). I 100% recommend this place. It pains me to leave a negative review for this gym, but after giving it ample time to improve, I feel it’s necessary to share my experience. I’ve held off on writing anything less than five stars, hoping things would get better. Unfortunately, they haven’t.
The biggest issue with DYNO is its route setting. If you’re a 6-foot-tall climber, you likely won’t struggle. However, if you’re shorter—like me, at 5 feet with a 0 ape index—you’re in for a frustrating experience.
I have repeatedly left feedback for the setters, the owner, and through the Kaya app, expressing concerns about the lack of height-inclusive routes. Many problems are impossible—or nearly impossible—without resorting to unsafe dynamic moves. And rather than improving, the setting seems to be getting worse.
For context, I am an average climber, with my bouldering grade ranging from V4-V6 (occasionally V7) and my roped climbing between 5.10c-5.12d, depending on whether I’m leading or top-roping. I’ve climbed at many gyms across the Midwest, Canada, and beyond, and I rarely encounter these issues elsewhere. At DYNO, I often leave my sessions feeling discouraged and frustrated.
When I repeatedly watch taller climbers effortlessly reach holds that are completely out of my range, it’s disheartening. I’m not alone in feeling this way—many other climbers have voiced similar frustrations. Some may not feel comfortable addressing it with the owner, or perhaps they have and nothing has changed. I’ve personally spoken to the owner several times, and while he has assured me that his setters are working toward better height inclusivity, I’ve seen little improvement over the years.
One of the most frustrating aspects of DYNO’s route setting is the overuse of long reaches as a way to increase difficulty, particularly in higher-level climbs. There are many ways to make a problem more challenging—such as smaller holds, worse angles, complex movement, or technical footwork—without simply spacing out the holds. Prioritizing reach over technique makes it nearly impossible for shorter climbers to progress, forcing them into unsafe dynamic moves just to complete basic sequences.
When I struggle with what feels like two-thirds of the routes because of unreachable holds or unsafe dynamic moves, there is still a major problem. As a paying member, it’s frustrating to feel ignored. My partner and I are seriously considering canceling our memberships and switching to Planet Rock or the Windsor bouldering gym—both of which have far more height-inclusive route setting.
Suggestions for Improvement:
1. Incorporate Height-Inclusive Route Setting Practices: Ensure that routes have alternative beta for shorter climbers, avoiding mandatory deadpoints or extreme reaches that favor taller climbers.
2. Hire More Diverse Route Setters: A variety of perspectives—including more women and shorter setters—can lead to more inclusive problems.
3. Utilize Adjustable Starting Positions: Adding additional footholds or alternative starts can make routes more accessible without altering difficulty.
4. Add More Holds and Foot Chips: Increasing the number of holds and foot chips does not necessarily make a climb easier, but it does make it more accessible for shorter climbers by allowing for reasonable progression between moves.
5. Move Away from “Reach-Based” Difficulty: Longer reaches should not be the primary method of increasing difficulty in routes. There are plenty of other ways to challenge climbers, such as by using smaller holds, more technical sequences, or trickier body positioning.
6. Collect and Implement User Feedback: Route setters should actively engage with climbers of all heights to understand their struggles and adjust accordingly.
7. Test Routes with Climbers of Different Heights: Before finalizing a set, have shorter climbers test them to ensure accessibility.
Dyno has the potential to be an outstanding gym, if they make the necessary changes to be accommodating to people of all heights. If they make these improvements, they’d have 5 stars from me.

I'm pretty new to climbing and I'm amazed at the welcome I received from Dino, his crew, and other climbers there. It was only my third time climbing in years, and they quickly got me reacquainted with gear and safety. Everyone was so excited to share tips and stories. I did my highest climb ever with the help of a new friend who belayed me-also a first for me. (Thanks, Joe). I'll definitely be back soon.

I remember how excited I was to finally find a gym near me. It has been a year or two since then, but I will always come back to this gym to climb.
Compared to a lot of the climbing gyms in Michigan, this one is by far on the top of the list. Not only do they have parking available (Honestly a score in the city), the gym is vacuumed and the benches are washed every night. The bathrooms are clean, and well taken care of. They offer classes for those who want to advance in their climbing life, and an easy follow-me video for those who are trying it for the first time. they have a schedule for cycling routes to which they are very consistent. The holds are never oily or unwashed when replaced.
They host several events throughout the year for membership holders and public events like dog adoptions and the like for everyone. There is a cafe attached to the gym in addition to a small cart of snack selections for all your bulking and eating needs. They sell shoes, harnesses, and tons of stylish merch to represent the gym. The gym upstairs mainly consists of cardio and free weight training, but they also offer yoga on select days.
The staff are by far some the most personable and considerate people I have ever had the pleasure of encountering. The gym itself is also just as friendly and inviting. Asking for a spot, asking for advice, and just having a conversation in general is never a challenge here.
They offer bouldering, auto-belay, top rope, and lead climbing. I will say, the majority have told me that their boulder problems are harder in comparison to other gyms. But, they offer a wide variety of holds and route combinations for all skill levels. Their prices are slightly more expensive than other climbing facilities, but with how much they keep up their routes and cleanliness its an extremely fair cost.
I very much look forward to climbing here again when I'm back in the area! I recommend this gym to everyone, but be warned, it's hard to quite once you start.

I've rated this gym five stars before, but now they have taken away many of the high beginner/low intermediate routes and I've noticed that much of the gym has now become lead rope only, with the top rope anchors being without top ropes... I was just there today and there were lead rope people that were extremely rude because they apparently think they own the gym. Bring back more intermediate routes and spread them out throughout the gym instead of sticking a vast majority of them in one corner. Parking lot is also in utter crap show... There were people parking their cars in non parking spots and block me in. They need to expand their parking lot into the vacant lot right next door.

This facility is absolutely amazing! It's huge and has so much to offer for just about anyone. They have an amazing training area including a kilter board. My only suggestion (and hopes!) as a Canadian crossing the border to climb at dyno is that dyno might one day offer day passes at par for Canadian climbers. With the rising prices of tolls and the exchange rate, it's becoming less realistic to justify the costs. It could be a great business tactic to offer this on Mondays as the gym in Windsor is closed if they were at all interested!!! :D regardless, I'll probably still go because I love the gym.

I love Dyno! I tried bouldering for the first time here about a year ago which is shocking because I have some fine motor skill issues and a fear of heights but my friends were into it so I figured I’d try anything once. That being said, I’ve found that the Dyno community is extremely supportive. Folks will cheer you on even if you’re like me and have to stick to the easier routes. Climbing here has improved my confidence, coordination, and strength a ton. I love how clean it is, the staff is friendly, they have a nice gear corner you can shop, and safety is their number one priority. They have a wide variety of climbing routes with plenty that will challenge you but still be achievable for those like me that need the more beginner friendly VB-V2s, but also a ton for more advanced climbers too on the boulder wall and belay wall. I also tried my first auto belay route the other day and got certified by Dino who was encouraging and had a ton of patience and helped me through being terrified at first to let go of the wall. By the end of my session, I was climbing higher than I have before and I’d call that great progress! I’m so happy I’ve given climbing a try and to have Dyno nearby. Absolutely check them out!

The only thing I could suggest would be installing lockers. The climbing community usually consists of great people surrounding everyone. The dealing with your life in anothers hands and all. unfortunately, there are always a few bad apples. Having so many people in such a large place, I can see why safety is there#1 priority! I'm from the Ann Arbor area, so I regularly climb at planet rock. Me and some of my climbing partners decided to visit Dyno , and overall it was a positive experience. I'll summarize some of the pros and cons I personally saw
Pros
- The gym was very clean. It was very refreshing to see some of the staff cleaning while we were in the gym
- The staff was great for the most part
Cons
- The setting was a lot more relaxed than what we were used to at planet rock. Most of the routes were easier (subjectively) than what the actual grade reflected. We felt most of the routes should have been graded a grade lower than what they were actually graded
- Confusing check in process. We did the orientation safety video before getting into the gym, but you had to ask for the top rope/autobelay classes and then wait for a staff member to be available to do this. If you didn't do this, then the only thing you would be able to do is boulder. If you're visiting the gym for the first time, it's strange they don't ask you upfront what kind of climbing you wanted to do just so they could know beforehand
Overall, Dyno was a positive experience and I would visit again if I was in the area

I am impressed with the environment and positive vibe this gym has and felt very welcomed and at home here. The route-setting is awesome and has a ton of variance keeping it creative and refreshing, and the staff have been very helpful when I have questions or want a refresher on safety or technique. Overall this gym is wonderful and the community is vibrant and positive, I highly recommend stopping by!

Me and my boyfriend were very satisfied with our FIRST boulder climbing experience! We were nervous at first but the staff validated our emotions and lead us to have a really great time, we had no questions! But if we had any the staff were very well equipped and educated for any questions or tips we had. I recommend this place for any new nervous climbers as well. Will be back again! - Amber/James :)

I love Dyno have been climbing there for a while. Finally got around to doing the learn the ropes course. I love the whole the staff they are amazing and I absolutely love Meg she’s great, a wonderful instructor, makes sure you’re safe (which is important) and I laughed so much my checks started hurting. This is the second time Meg has helped me out, first with equipment then with this course and she is amazing. Anyways love Dyno.

Great staff is really friendly. They have something g for everyone. You will get sore. You will have fun and you will get scared.
All around, really clean everything. Looks new. They change walls every week so it's never the same. Parking is safe inside a lot on the property. They have a food stand, but it wasn't open during the day on Monday. Will be coming back.

A couple of friends and I took a field trip to Dyno. Within a couple minutes after checking in, the owner came by to greet us while we were waiting for our belay check. He ended up doing our check for us. I was very excited to get up on the wall, but I was very much enjoying our time spent with Dino and learning about his gym. The gym was clean, routes were clearly marked, holds were immaculate, and there were a lot of options for top rope, lead, bouldering, and auto belay. I only top rope and I had more than enough options to choose from. We live a good distance from Dyno, and my current gym is 2 miles from my house, but I am seriously considering a 2nd climbing membership and making Dyno into a weekly field trip. We will be back VERY soon.

Newer gym which has a much nicer selection of holds and walls than the planet rock gyms. With that being said, the lack of cool temperature in the gym combined with shirt on policy even in the training area deducts a decent bit from a quality session.

Update: Owner genuinely cares about the satisfaction and satefy of his customers. Staff interactions can be frustrating, but the owner listens to feedback and frustrations.
Unhelpful and lazy staff. If you need to take one of the half dozen basic climbing tests expect to wait 30 to 60 minutes will the staff sit around and chat.

Boulder setting is hot garbage but the holds are fresh. I agree with the other reviews that the staff can be pretty annoying, especially the routesetter that tried to tell me that one arm front lever is mandatory for sending v11.
Facility is otherwise great; definitely a step up from planet rock which has about an inch thick layer of used chalk on every exposed surface

I would give a five but the girl that signed me up and sold me shoes and a harness was rude, and wasn't very helpful. I felt embarrassed trying to communicate with her and she was condescending. I love the place, I love the atmosphere and no issues with anyone else. I get paid once a month and she couldn't make it so I get charged on the 3rd instead of the 1st, my family friend is practically my brother and another employee was trying to make it so I could get a discount for living together but the girl I had issues with in my opinion made that not happen as well. So now Idk if I'll be able to come back next month because they are gonna charge my card with 0$ on it and I'm not paying the enrollment fee. I wanted my own membership so I could go whenever but I guess I'll just be a guest after this month.
Also when she was teaching me about the checks on the auto belay or whatever it's called she made me feel very stupid. The guy that trained me before did not go over it as she did. Honestly I still don't know all the checks now because they were conflicting. I just know to check the Caribbeaner and make sure the rope is good by pulling it. I was trying to explain to her that the guy taught me two fingers in the front and she was arguing with me and I was only trying to explain that that's how I was taught and she was trying to tell me that's not possible basically which I thought was very close-minded. I spent over $200 and the whole time all I could think is am I making the right choice and I almost wanted to just not get a membership or buy anything because she didn't explain what she was charging me for. I told her I only wanted the equipment and she put the membership in there and it just made me feel again really stupid. I am not a stupid man I know this, but it doesn't change the fact that somebody can make you feel that way in a certain area that you're not aware of or understanding in. She seemed new but the place is new so I'm not sure. She was short with a little bit of weight blondish brown hair I can't remember her name I don't even think she gave it to me to be honest. Again know that I really love the place and I'm not going to let her ruin it for me. I just wanted you guys to know that you do have an employee that is not doing her job well. Because I compare her to the other employees I have dealt with, which have been a few and they are very helpful and they are very good with people, whereas she is not. She has no humor and is very serious and I know climbing is serious but talking shouldn't be and that's where another issue was. I was trying to lighten the mood and make jokes, and she would take it literal and be condescending again. Hopefully you guys catch on to this I'm sure you will in time, and hopefully she figures it out. She definitely was a new employee because she was asking the other employees questions because it seems she did not have the knowledge to do her job effectively. Hopefully next time I come in I can talk to somebody else, and I'm sure they can work with me on the date that the payment is taken out of my account. I'm on disability and I only get a check on the 3rd. This is my only activity I do and I wish and hope that I can continue to do it and enjoy myself and the people that I have to interact with when I come in.

Stay with me here because I have plenty of fantastic things to say about this place. I started going to DYNO with my airpods in, absolutely zero familiar faces, and staying in my own little lane. I now go with no airpods in sight, all familiar faces, and climbing better everyday. Not only is the community within DYNO made up of only the most beautiful, welcoming climbers, but their staff is out of this world. Each of them bring their own spark, motivation, and education to the craft. I’m blessed to be part the community. This is definitely the gym for you no matter your level! Much love and appreciation.

I love so much about Dyno. I've made lifelong friends, rediscovered my love of climbing, gotten in great shape, and found my home away from home here. The routes are reset on a fairly regular basis, with a great mix of styles. The employees are friendly and clearly passionate about climbing. The fitness area is well equipped. The monthly membership is a reasonable price. I wish they were open earlier on the weekends, it gets pretty crowded with kids/families.

Had an amazing experience here the other day. We came on a weekday which was perfect for us beginners 🟰 less crowded. Carolina was really sweet and explained everything well during our tour. The owner Dino was also very personable and encouraging.
Side note- I’m in no way shape or form super athletic or thin. As a plus size gal, I was worried about a few things but, shortly, I realized this place is very inclusive, and the instructors were encouraging overall. It seemed that all body types and athletic levels were welcomed here. It was exciting to try something new and feel very welcomed. We will be back!!

DYNO detroit climbing is amazing. Good ambient, good people, good staff. Ive been climbing in many diferents climbing gyms in US and Spain and DYNO has the perfect combination. The most remarkable point is the routteseters. They build with logic and the most important thing, both the rutes and the boulders are very fun. This is very important. Again my congrats. Keep going.

Used to live around detroit area and climbed at planet rock while I lived there. Moved away for work and Dyno opened up a year or so later. I come back occasionally to visit friends in the area and have climbed at dyno multiple times while returning.
LOVE the setting, the gym layout and that they are working on a cafe setup. Staff is super friendly.
Recently left some shoes and a chalk bag while visiting and the staff was super helpful coordinating it to be dropped off by my place in northern KY! (Someone from detroit making their way to the red river gorge)
Highly recommend!

If you're looking for a climbing gym that will exceed your expectations, Dyno Detroit is the place to go! The gym is truly exceptional - top-notch in every way. The first thing you'll notice is how clean and well-maintained the facility is.
In addition to being immaculate, the gym features some of the best route setting I've ever seen. Each wall has a variety of routes to choose from, ranging from beginner-friendly to challenging and technical climbs.
The staff at this gym are excellent too - they are friendly, knowledgeable, and always willing to help you with any questions you might have. They do a great job at providing a fun and safe environment for climbers of all levels.
Overall, Dyno Detroit is a fantastic climbing gym that I highly recommend to anyone looking to up their climbing game or just have a great time climbing indoors.
