SOLID 5 out of 5 STARS
We have trusted Goldfish Swim School since our son was 11 months old and he was at gold fish every week until he was 7 years old, and after a short break he just returned at age 9. From start to finish the experience was fantastic. Gina was the standout, she handled our re-enrollment with professionalism, warmth, and real attention to our sonβs needs. She took the time to understand where he left off, explained the re-acclimation plan clearly, and coordinated with the instructors so he felt confident right away. He is now back in Swim Force (he has literally gone through every class they offer :-) and absolutely loves it.
The entire staff was as wonderful as we remembered. If you want someone knowledgeable and genuinely caring to guide your child back into swimming, ask for Gina. Highly recommend Gina and the whole Goldfish team. Iβll be posting a full, detailed write-up with photos and tips on SquareZones soon.

Our family started at Goldfish 9 years ago. Our oldest progressed through the levels all the way to swim force. He left goldfish to train with the local swim team and is now a state qualifying swimmer at 10U. We started goldfish for water safety purposes and came out with two children who love swimming and have chosen it as their sport. Our youngest, recently graduated from goldfish also, making swim force at the age of 5. Both of our children have flourished at goldfish. We have been through many teachers, too many to count. However, have had phenomenal experiences with Geena and Kari. Geena is very helpful and always friendly. Kari is one of the best swim coaches our oldest swimmer has had. We are sad to leave our goldfish family after 9 years. 10/10 recommend Goldfish Ann Arbor for your young swimmer.

Edited review. We had been charged for almost a year of lessons we never received ($250 a month). The company eventually reached out with a solution we were happy with, and the teachers ARE great with kids, even kids afraid of the water. For the time, in a group class, your kid gets about 10 minutes in the water, and put in your cancellation a month before you want to end lessons-- they have a mandatory 30 day waiting period before cancellation is effective. Review would be 5 stars if that issue would be addressed and kids got more time in the water

Been coming here for a few months as a casual swimmer for my son since I live out of the area, but Grandma is nearby. The staff have always been nice π and very flexible with questions and changes. The program of pricing is a little confusing, but since we are able to do drop in and pay by the class, it's very convenient.

I wanted to love goldfish, but it was overpriced and the 30 min lessons with 4 kids in a class made it so the kids hardly ever got a turn to swim. It took my son forever to advance in their lessons bc of this . When we did the jumpstart clinics or private lessons, that is the only time I actually saw any progress. I took my son out of goldfish and started private lessons through the city of Ann Arbor and Mary Lou Murray and my son advanced quickly with more focused attention and swim time. The These other options were also so much cheaper than goldfish and you get more for your money. My son started on a swim team last year at age six and is diving and swimming 100m races now thanks to his progress once we left goldfish.

So happy to be done with this place! You sign up and they say they will be accommodating⦠DO NOT BELIEVE IT!! Our time here has been nothing but a hassle and constant struggle trying to find class times that work with our schedule. When we do find a class they are packed and my kid barely gets any attention from the teacher. Using makeup tokens is near impossible as well. Total waste of money and no customer service.
Go to big blue over goldfish. Much better experience and customer care.

We've had lessons with both Goldfish and Big Blue Swim School for longer than 5 weeks, and have found that Goldfish Swim School is superior in so many ways.
Goldfish Swim School:
-- Teachers are engaging, patient and have on several occasions tailored lessons to my kids (ages 4, 6, 9) based on how they learn as individuals to achieve progress
-- General manager Jeremiah hires passionate coaches and instructors who love teaching kids, which truly translates to a great experience for even kids who are fearful of water
-- There are 4 family swim sessions every week or more if there are events so that my kids can practice and have fun outside of lesson time, my kids have made tons of progress due to these opportunities (Big Blue cannot provide family swim)
-- No matter which level my kids are in, I can always find a time that works for our busy schedule
-- After lessons are over, I can actually shampoo their hair at the public showers here instead of having to wait until after we get home (at Big Blue, parents are asked to call kids out of the swim/shower area once they have a quick rinse, we are not allowed to enter with street shoes inside swim area)
-- The fitting rooms are a much safer set up with babies as the benches are much wider if you need to change a baby and there is no large gap between back of bench and wall that baby could fall through or get stuck unlike Big Blue Swim School
-- There are swim suit driers here (Big Blue Swim School has none and provides plastic bag instead)
-- Goldfish Swim School provides kid size potty seats and steps/stools in restrooms, baby seats in locker room area, hair dryers, diapers, baby wipes, lotion, concessions/snacks(for a small fee), swim diapers/supplies if you need them
-- I've seen the general manager and staff members jump in to comfort children who are fearful of water, kids who are feeling shy, kids who are on the spectrum/with special needs, and opening up an extra lane to provide individual lessons to better their experience in the water.
I can truly say that this group of staff at Goldfish love what they do, and it is because of them that my 6 and 9 year olds who were afraid of putting their faces in the water are on the swim team and love swimming today. They are also the reason why my 4 year old is one of the youngest pro1 level swimmer. I wholeheartedly recommend this location and all of its amazing instructors to all kids.

Weβve had a great experience at Goldfish! The teachers are very patient and friendly. We used to attend weekly, but took a long break. When we came back, our son was a bit scared of the water but the teachers calmed him down in spite of many tears and encouraged him.

Absolutely horrendous! They do false advertising about their BOGO offer. We signed up paying almost $300 to have 2 of our kids learn swimming at Goldfish. But when we had to enroll them they conveniently tell us "oh the the BOGO can only be used by one child not two". ummm OK....why? It isn't hurting them to take in 2 kids and we were open to enrolling them in separate sessions but to outrightly be told NO was just quite disappointing. So then we looked for other options and signed them up for another school which has even better reviews. And the price for 2 of our kids is a FRACTION of what Goldfish is charging. So we called Goldfish seeking a refund for the BOGO sign up. And MY GOODNESS it took us 4+ days and NUMEROUS calls with several people who would keep passing the buck onto someone else or keep telling us "we will talk with the supervisor and get back to you" or "we will have the supervisor call you to deal with the refund". Like CONSTANT runaround. And the worst part was they wouldn't even answer the phone the first time around. It always required us to call them, leave a message only to have someone lower ranked call us and have us repeat the story again and again to only tell us that a supervisor will handle our refund.
We are so frustrated with this place that we were considering going to our credit card company to dispute this charge because of such gross inaction from this awful place. But after several days of breaking our heads they finally are telling us that they will issue a refund. Well we shall wait and see. I am so flabbergasted at such ineptitude and such awful lack of customer service and customer satisfaction. We had high hopes for this but I guess its good that we dodged a bullet with this swim school. Not to mention we found that other school in A2 that is much more reasonably priced and felt way more easy to deal with with their representatives. Given our experience and lack of transparency with their offers and the pulling teeth process of trying to get our refund, we simply cannot recommend this place to anyone. Ugh! What a terrible experience with this place.

Our kids have improved a lot in their skills over the past 3 months here. Staff is mostly (90%) great, only one bad experience where they pushed our daughter beyond her comfort zone. The cost is extremely high, but I think it is worth the value for the skills they provide. That, and they need an app or a faster website.

The staff seems nice however I do not think that group classes are worth it, my daughter is very excited to go to the classes each week but I have seen little to no progress. There is very little time dedicated to each child. Todays class was specially disappointing because one of the kids in the class would not get off the instructor and so the instructor was trying to teach the other kids while still having this other child hanging on to her neck, which obviously is not practical, no one else seemed to care or take attention so that the rest of the class could carry on. Today was a huge waste of a class, time and money !

This location has certainly been through a lot of turnover, but Iβve observed improvements in staffing over the past few months. Some instructors are stronger than others, but I can attest that 80% of the time, my child has had a solid instructor.
I wish class sizes were capped at 3 children, but itβs currently 4 kids for group lessons, which only provides each kid a total of ~7 min of individual instruction for a decent sized monthly fee. But I do understand the business model.

My family enrolled our 4-year-old son in Goldfish Swim School, and unfortunately, our experience was less than satisfactory. During one of his lessons, our son became too scared and refused to go again. He told us that he was allowed to sink, causing him fear and discomfort. Despite our efforts to reach out to the school for clarification on the situation, we were unable to get a response as phone calls and messages were left unanswered. The lessons were advertised as 30-minute sessions, but in reality, each child only received 10 minutes of instruction due to the rotating nature of the classes. When we attempted to cancel our enrollment, we were required to pay for an additional month, which added further frustration to an already negative experience. I cannot recommend Goldfish Swim School to others as it did not meet our expectations for a safe and effective swim instruction environment for our child. There are better options in Ann Arbor.

Absolutely awful. My wife and I were treated horribly and forced to cover our faces while in the pool. It was the first time my daughter swam and she couldnβt even see me smile at her and comfort her. Then the instructor had the audacity to tell me to cover my nose with my mask while he himself was wearing nothing but a face shield. Their Covid policies are completely antithetical to the science. They then continued to charge our credit card the next month and refused us a refund. We will never be going back

We took our son for a trial swim (baby) and the class was very sweet. They had some fun activities. Keep in mind that it's okay if your baby cries at first. A mom comforted me and told me it took a month for her son to get used to the water/pool. My son was a bit intimidated but really liked interacting with others.
I think it was confusing walking in though. I wasn't exactly sure what to do, and I was given the quickest run down and it was a bit overwhelming not knowing where things go/where we go. I was even 15min early... and the only person there for almost 10min.
I liked it otherwise.

We have had both of our boys do the baby classes here and we enjoy the warm pool. Due to multiple colds/illnesses over the past few months, we had to miss a number of classes unfortunately. We had issues with desk staff not knowing policies in regards to make-up classes and cancelling the membership, but after a few emails the management reached out and helped us and we were very appreciative of that. Like all businesses, they are experiencing staffing issues but we really appreciated that they reached out to help us and to help make things right for us.

It's a big scam. They are charging you $25 for a 30 min class for 4 kids in a lane shoulder to shoulder with one instructor. Each kid will only be swimming for 10 mins by the time one kid wants his goggles adjusted and one kid need help to get in the pool, and giving turns to all 4 kids. Also I noticed they start walking the students exactly at the class start time, but they will take them out of the pool 5 mins before the class ends.
And my favorite part is they want parents to social distance and you better have your mask on, but the kids are shoulder to shoulder in the pool. My final complain they won't have us make up 2 classes the we missed because we withdraw and they won't refund either. It looks to me that its a big scam by charging me something I didn't use. What a mess.
I used to talk very highly of Goldfish swim school, but now I will be telling everyone go somewhere else

UPDATE 4/27-
I spoke with manager Lorrel and had a really positive experience. She was understanding and apologetic while making every effort to make our potential future experiences positive. We will return to Goldfish with the new measures and assurances from management to give it another go. I've updated from 1 to 4 stars and will update if things change.
----
Honestly I'm so truly appalled by the experience we had with this Goldfish. We were so excited to start lessons but our first was cancelled two hours before and our second was a really awful experience. We arrived 15 min early, my child has plenty of water experience but hasn't been in an indoor pool before. He was shaking and screaming in fear when the class started, the teacher completely ignored us and just started the class without talking to us. I had to proactively ask for help to which I was told "just get him in and he will get over it", we did and he just got more and more upset. Finally the teacher threw me a ball and said "here play with this" which didn't help the situation at all. The lead teacher came over to tell me and my child that he was fine and he just needed to get used to it. I've never seen my child so upset before, he isn't like this in any water experience and for what I was charged for a baby swim class, I expected to at least be met with trained staff willing to help make the water more accessible to all children. We finally left after 10 min. It took over an hour and a calm bath to re-regulate my son. I called the manager to report the experience and ask for our money back for the rest of the classes and was told she can't refund classes in the future (that I was required to pre-pay for) and that I should just come back and let them have another chance. Absolutely not. Swimming is too important of a skill to leave in the hands of a company and staff who clearly does not care about toddler mental and physical safety. Do not take your children here, what a terrible excuse for a child-friendly establishment.

We feel safe bringing our family here and very VERY grateful to have a place for our kids to interact with other people, learn something important, and move their bodies. Another instructor (Trevor) jumped in and worked one on one with her and even the deck supervisor came out to talk to me about our daughterβs hesitancy with swimming and he offered some great suggestions with how we can help her feel more comfortable in the lesson while still learning and having fun. You guys rock!

Today was our second class with our 2 1/2 year old. We travel from Jackson , MI to attended. I really loved the classes a lot! But they make you wear a mask in the water with your child & the YMCA of jackson does not. So we will not be back to Goldfish swim school. Also , today as we entered they let us know that from now on only one parent is allowed to attend the lessions. That also is another reason we are chosing the YMCA. The swim class is great bonding time for my son and I. But my husband also really enjoyed that he could watch us. I am just saddened that we started my son there thinking we would be sticking with it and now have to change. But thankfully we only have been going a short time. Other than these issues I think this place is great!

I highly recommend. I started bringing my 6 year old daughter here for swim lesson about a year ago and its been a great experience. When we first started she didn't like going under (would cry when she went under) and could not swim at all and always needed a βfloatieβ in the pool. She loves swim class and has made tremendous progress in the pool! She is able to swim the length of the pool now (without a βfloatieβ) and can also swim under water and get dive sticks!
Also, when it comes to Covid, this facility is taking all the proper precautions to keep the place clean. Everyone wheres masks, except the kids while swimming. Swim instructors wear face shields. Changing rooms, bathrooms and waiting area chairs are sanitized between every class.

We patronized this business for approximately 2 years before having to relocate. The swim lessons were usually very good especially Connor.
The poorest part of our experience unfortunately was when we had to leave. Obviously COVID 19 shut the facility down and we lost 3/5 of a month of lessons that we had to pay in advance (approx $75). I contacted the management team multiple times as we were moving out of state to a location with no goldfish school to try to get a prorated refund however was told they were not able to process this because they were closed (yet able to answer emails?). After another month and a half passed and I still could not get a refund and was about to relocate I initiated a credit card partial chargeback for services not rendered which seemed like an open and shut case to avoid having the chargeback window close.
Unfortunately goldfish decided to fight my chargeback claiming that I was not entitled to a partial refund after all even though intimating by email that I was in fact going to get something when they reopened. They clearly believe that their 'operational costs' outweigh customer experience and policy even in extenuating circumstances and that the impact on them as a business justifies essentially theft for prepaid services that were never rendered.
This unfortunately speaks volumes about the predatory behavior of their leadership. As a result I would recommend not patronizing this business under their current ownership solely because of this callous display to protect their bottom line (which can't possibly be impacted that hard by $75...).I would be concerned about how they would respond if other more serious disagreements arose.
Regarding the swim lesson component, our daughter had a great time most lessons (a few with teachers we didn't click with where she cried at the poolside the whole lesson not withstanding).
Update 8/24/20-We were surprisingly contacted last week with the offer to issue a full refund as indicated by the response to my comment which surprised me. They told us to wait a week to see if the refund would go through, which we did and it did not. I just called back today and was told that because I pursued a chargeback they actually would not issue me a refund which is contrary to the manager response here. So I believe the content of my review still stands although I would have been willing to change it had it not gone this way.

My son and daughter have been going to Goldfish for swimming lessons since they were infants. My son is now joining the swim team. He received lots of support for skill building as well as encouragement to do his best in order to achieve his goals. We love Goldfish!

This place is really great! My son is 2 and in mini 3 class so I don't have to go in the water... Yay! The swim instructors are all great with the kids, he's had different instructors because we've had a few make ups that we had to to which the staff were so accommodating. His normal instructor Ms. Lee is amazing and he's doing so well in swim class. My son loves to swim and has since he's been little but if you have a child afraid of the water th
is is the place to go they do so well with the children even the ones that start the lesson kicking and screaming the coaches are able to calm them and by end of the lesson they don't want to get out of the pool.
I only wish they had longer classes for the toddlers an hour would be so much better for the ones that really like the water because a half hour just isn't long enough when split between 3 or 4 kids and then if class with scared kids your kid gets even less time. Also wish progress of your little one was passed on from teacher to teacher when doing make ups.

EDIT: Evette's customer service was outstanding. She made me feel like I was part of Goldfish Swim family. And shout out to Emily who is an awesome instructor. My son had lessons with her since he was two and she is just the best. Whenever there is change in schedule, he would ask me to change his time to be in Emily's class.

Weβve love the infant swim classes here. Warm pool and inviting environment. Connor is a great teacher who explains the theory behind each drill. I love getting my son comfortable in the water and seeing him learn the basics of swimming. I feel that he will be safer around water and also gain confidence both in and out of the pool.

I wanted to set up one time lessons for my daughter this summer due to our busy schedule. Goldfish wanted me to sign papers for a monthly membership and then told me I could sign another paper when I came in that would cancel the membership. I didnβt feel comfortable signing the membership papers because they explicitly said Iβd have to pay monthly. I told them this and they said it was their policy and charged me for an appointment even though I called the day before explaining I didnβt want to sign the paperwork. I tried to talk to a manager several times but was not able to reach one by phone and after multiple requests they never returned my calls. Iβm not sure how the lessons are, but they really need to reconsider their paperwork for drop ins and not just ignore people with legitimate concerns. I wouldnβt recommend going here. Iβm sure there are better options in town.

My family loves Goldfish! I didn't know what to expect when we signed up for classes, but after the first day, the only regret I felt was that we hadn't started sooner. The instructor is so friendly and attentive to each student, and I am so thankful for their focus on water safety for even the youngest swimmers. The staff are friendly and helpful, and we enjoy going for classes and family swims. The facilities are clean, spacious, and accommodating--a hair drying bar? They thought of everything!

Goldfish Swim School of Ann Arbor is doing it right in ALL the best ways. The instructors genuinely care about each and every student and their ability to teach is at the highest level. The customer service is always warm, friendly, personal, and professional. The system of perpetual learning and peer encouragement is ideal. If you are thinking about swim lessons - go no further - the life skills (and possibly life saving skills) learned at Goldfish Swim School of Ann Arbor can't be beat! In four days (jump start clinic} Goldfish took a five years old girl that screamed at being splashed and a eight years old boy that had high anxiety about the water into confident children around water. Both can hold their breath while their face is underwater. Better yet, can float on their back. Kudos to Goldfish!

This place is amazing! We had heard great things from friends and family, and they exceeded our expectations. Our son (4) had taken swim lessons at another facility, but he's very stubborn and it didn't go well. The teachers at Goldfish were able to help him make an incredible amount of progress in a one week jump-start class. He's now starting a session of weekly classes and he's already able to swim about six feet without any assistance. The teachers are very friendly and great with the kids, and they provide helpful feedback to us at the end of each lesson. There's a nice seating area for parents outside of the pool area, with a big windows so you can watch the classes. Their prices may be a little more than other swim schools, but it's well worth it.

Short story: my kids made great progress in one week jump-start lessons.
Other things that make Goldfish our new fave swim spot:
Warm water, private changing rooms, activities for younger/non-swimming siblings, comfortable waiting area, bathing suit dryer, hair dryer, extra goggles, great teachers, friendly staff, cute decor, underwater platforms to adjust swim length challenge level, siblings scheduled together. Swimsuit bags provided are super handy!

This is my second year with Goldfish. My four year old daughter learned to swim pretty quickly through this amazing school last spring, and we are back for the second spring in a row for my three year old son. His lesson today went great! The coaches were friendly, prepared, and diligent. It is after the lesson that prompted me to write this review. I lost my keys. My car is not supposed to lock with the keys inside, so I assumed they fell from my pocket inside and maybe a child picked them up. The women behind the desk searched and searched for me. They asked everyone if they found them, even calling some families that left. They entertained my son while I was on the phone with AAA, they fed him snacks for free, they even walked my water bottle down the sidewalk to another shop. The went ABOVE and beyond to help and were so warm while doing so. I have recommended this school to many of my friends and they are all thrilled as well. There is no better environment to teach your child how to swim.
