Imagine being a member for 25 years and in 2023, you’re being told you can’t be naked in the steam room, hot tub, sauna, cold plunge, etc. The reason? Probs trans people (oh no I’m so politically incorrect).
It’s funny, those are strict rules but they let idiots burn tea tree oil in the saunas (made me throw up), kids over 3 in the women’s room, people shave their legs in the hot tub, stupid Gen Y kids film tik toks, and more. There is more. There’s a list. My membership is up in a few months and I honestly think you’ll get the equivalent at Planet Fitness. Or better. So I’ll be going there.

This place disappoints me so much. I’ve been a member since 2004 and it’s consistently gone down hill since 2014. I’ve been hopeful but wow. In the women’s locker room, I can’t be naked unless I’m showering. Pathetic.

Best physical health facility/gym in the area. The monthly fee is high, but makes it really feel like a club, and the amenities provided are everything an individual looking to keep in healthy physical shape. Had an ACL replacement and they allowed me to pause my membership payments for up to 6 months for free due to the medica state I was in. Feedback you provide is listened to.

I love that they keep the place clean . The staff is polite. My view has changed since I found out that they allow boys in the women's locker room and they can stare at you while you change clothes. They said that they can't do anything about.

It is $80 a day for you and two kids to go here and swim. I feel like it is just too pricey for many people to go. The East Lansing aquatic center is a better deal for $10 a person per day by far. Larger pool. $300 membership sign up fee and $160 a month for one person. Crazy greed.

The nonsense over the indoor pool project is ridiculous. No lanes available unless it's a pelting rain.
What's most frustrating is that it was a BIG secret that you could put your membership on hold thru the end of the project. Had I known I would have selected this option. Now I need to roundup an attorney.
I have joined the YMCA to insure I still have swim lanes available. I have fitness goals that I intend to meet. The Health club i pay dues to can no longer meet my requirements yet they feel no guilt taking my dues and providing no service.

My son participated in a tennis program at the MAC and enjoyed it, so we considered joining. It is a nice, large facility! Unfortunately, there is not much information on the website and what exists is out of date. I called to get more information, and after waiting on hold for 10 minutes, the person who answered made me feel as though I was inconveniencing them by asking questions. They also didn't have any information on aquatics, so they transferred me to a phone number in aquatics. That person didn't answer so I left a message (not yet returned). I think that if they don't want to post information on the website, then they should be willing and able to answer phone inquiries. I am sorry to leave a negative review, but this experience (and reading some other reviews regarding customer service issues) made me rethink joining and we've decided not to join at this point.

I’m a little sick of the constant emails and signs reminding patrons to watch their nudity…in the locker rooms. The signs everywhere reminding me to not be naked, right before I’m about to shower is also pretty off putting. It’s a weird thing to police in a gym and it’s gotten a little excessive.

Absolutely ridiculous that a day pass is $41. There is no way that anyone would come to use every single amenity offered. If someone’s going to workout it would be for a max of 2 hours and that’s still not worth anywhere near $41. My girlfriend and I wanted to play 2 games of indoor pickleball on a rainy day, sucks to be us I guess. $41 is crazy for an hour.

Best gym in Michigan! The customer service is great. The members here are always friendly and kind. The amenities are amazing. I love the dry sauna, steam room, hot tub, and cold plunge. I became a member a few months ago.
1.The hours is short they close at 9pm. for people who work late is not enough time.
2.They are offering personal training, which scam. I fell from the equipment while the personal trainer was there. After 15 minutes I fell and was injured, but they don't refund the hour that didn't used. After 15 Minute training I fell. the charge for one hour.
The finesse Manager was not compassionate with the member. The membership is not cheap, and a personal trainer charges a lot. It Not worth. She say I am not retui g your money. She is very rude.

The quality had declined substantially over the 5 years I was a member.

The good:
- Nice workout area. machines were usually in good repair.
- While I never used the tennis or basketball courts they seemed great.

The bad:
-The childrens programming is terrible. there are virtually no inclusive classes for kids and very few for an additional fee. a no additional cost kids yoga or tumbling or something would have been great.

-Deferred maintenance went on for years. the mens hot tub was out of commission for over a year. we get emails every few months saying "soon" but nothing changed.

-New locker policy requiring suits in the locker room hot tub and cold splash are ridiculous.

-When we first joined, tons of amenities were included, free coffee, hair products, razors. Most of that was gone after covid. The free coffee is being replaced by a not free starbucks.

Another commenter mentioned that the limited leisure pool was regularly being used for water aerobics, kicking the kids out. this is absolutely true and infuriating. there are 3 other pools that are for the older members. let the kids have their pool. there isnt much else for them there

And speaking of the pool, after covid the hours were completely unreliable. i get that staffing is a problem but make a schedule you can stick to and stick to it. It was very frustrating to get everyone ready, drive across town only to find out it was closed.

and all this while rates kept going up.
I was very sad to cancel my membership because I loved what it was when I first joined. the way it is now, you are better off saving a 100 a month and just go to the YMCA. there isnt much difference these days.

The recent lights on the tennis courts are terrible, they are too dim and pose hazards on the court of being struck by random tennis balls. Its a disgrace that the tennis program does not listen to feedback from its members which has resulted in a drain of members towards court one where there is less red tape and barriers between management and members

the most luxurious gym - cold plunge, hot tub, wet and dry sauna makes it the perfect place to relax after a great workout. there’s a full gym with everything from racks to dumbbells to weight machines. multiple workout class rooms and yoga and pilates studio to boot. the entire upstairs is basically cardio machines. plus there’s indoor/outdoor tennis, and indoor running track, an indoor/outdoor pool. its crazy how much this place offers! make sure to grab a smoothie or salad at the cafe on your way out. πŸ‘

They will close the entire outdoor kiddie pool for the Water Aerobics ladies because they don't want to get splashed! The horror! Getting wet in a pool while exercising????!!! The pool is roped off so the kids won't even be able to get to them but they don't care. They will close an ENTIRE pool for a handful of members yet in the lap lanes they are PROHIBTING butterfly stroke, breaststroke, and sidestroke if the unknown person assigned in your lap lane is inexperienced. Messaging them gets the response "get over it." This needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY. You are abusing your members. This club isn't worth the $100+ they leech out of you.

Been a member for a couple months and it seems things just don’t add up.

I’m not sure how they can charge so much when the β€œamenities” are always in repair or closed for staffing or just in bad dirty shape.

The front entrance closed for updating which is mind boggling considering how many other things needed updating worse. The locker rooms for example are dark dingy and dusty. During this closure I had been getting used to using the pol pavilion for entry. Well if the pool is closed, even though there is staff out at the pavilion they won’t let you walk on the pools deck to get inside. Parking lot is ok though…smh

The staff doesn’t seem to have any real leadership and always congregates near the pool in the back folding towels. They should be in the fitness area enforcing rules for racking weights and organizing the equipment.

The locker rooms are full of old men that never have clothes on. I get it, it’s a locker room. But there are posted rules that swim west is required when using the hot tub and cold plunge but the staff is too busy to enforce those rules and spend their time not cleaning. You’d think the managers would be making rounds and ensuring things are being kept.

It’s just not well managed. The amenities would be amazing if they kept up with with them. Leadership needs to take some ownership and keep the discipline.

One of the basketball courts has been damaged with cones around it for months with no signs that it will ever be repaired.

Management should get away from the lee desks and take a look around the place.

Not worth the money so far.

My favorite part of the MAC is the dead-eye looks you get from the staff as they manage to make you feel like trash for asking questions. That and the fact multiple things are always broken. Sometimes I feel like my family has a membership just so we can experience being treated like an inconvenience for $150+ a month. Maybe give your staff some sand to start blowing in your members eyes randomly, MAC? Seems like your staff would love that and it might be a step up in treatment for the members.

Your Aquatics Program is DISGUSTING. Let’s just focus on one of many problems. Your listed time for the Outdoor Leisure Pool does not match the information given by your "Head Life Guard" nor your front desk staff nor Gunner your Aquatics Director (I understand he's fired and will be gone soon. Reimburse your members for how badly he messed up for the last year+). When we call for pool schedules, we expect the staff telling us is correct and we won't arrive to being told that information was wrong and 3+ excuses why (2 turned out to be a lie, thanks "Head Life Guard!"). Can we get open and clear information about your Aquatics or can you reimburse those of us that have wasted several days and drives due to staff misinformation and inconsistency? I'll be posting this other places until we can get some responsibility taken on the MACs half.

If they want, I can get into how they’re failing the Aquatics Department in a variety of ways and we need to demand reimbursement.

This is gross, the MAC.

It's where we go for our medical doctor. There are many different things there such as medical equipment fitting, some rehab programs I think. Not sure what else. However the building itself is terrible if you're in a wheelchair. Threshold in is so unlevel that we had a terrible time trying to get over it. Several HEAVY interior doors do not have automatic openers?! If you don't have another person with you you'd have to call someone for assistance. And the doors with sensor openers don't usually work.

Not disabled accessible in my opinion.

This place is always nice. The only issue I have has been the fact that they reduced their hours during COVID and used it as an excuse to never go back to the original hours. When you message the management they are careless and basically respond with we don’t care what you think type of deal.

Winter 2023 update: Facilities are often in disrepair, closed, etc. When you call the club ahead of going and ask about specific facilities you're told they open, only to arrive and find them closed. The locker-room/restroom facilities are often not stocked with basics, have overflowing trash, and so disgustingly dirty that my children don't want to use them. All you hear from "management" are constant excuses while things get worse and worse.

Spring 2022 update: I visited the club as a guest. The MAC hasn't gotten any better about maintaining the club. Bathroom trash was overflowing, no shampoo in shower, and could have written my name in dirt on the floor. When I raised these concerns with membership office, staff was defensive and argumentative. New leadership apparently is leading the club down the same, warn path downhill.

Previous review: MAC has gone way down hill. Cleaning before COVID was atrocious. Now during COVID they want to force members back to the club or charge them a "hold" fee of $28/month?? This is what the club considers "customer service." Even when COVID is behind us, it's going to take a lot to convince me that the increasingly overpriced membership is worth it to return.

I had my membership since 2018. Since pandemic, I moved out of state and I keep my virtual membership to connect with MAC coaches since they are the awesome. At the beginning, it didn't run well due to Wifi connection issues. It seems this year it's getting better. They use Fitness on Demand to manage their online lessons. However, it ran into issues there such as missing online lessons posted. When it happened, I called MAC and the customer service can't help. It was terrible with today's experience. The person answering my call does not understand virtual membership at all. He kept telling me there is a problem with my membership that he can't add me to class reservation. I explained I'm not asking for in person lesson reservation. It's for online lesson. I spent 30 mins to explain and he finally told me he can't help. It's completely waste my time.

As the only hospital-based health club in Michigan, the MAC claims to be committed to improving the health of its community. While wheelchair users may be able to get through the door, the pool and equipment are largely inaccessible. Additionally, much of the facility has narrow pathways with sharp turns that are difficult to maneuver in a wheelchair. Though the pool does have a lift, it still requires a certain amount of mobility to use. This restricts many people from using the pool even though it is a great form of exercise that allows wheelchair users a far greater range of motion. The facility used to have a far more accessible lift several years ago (in fact, the tracks from the previous lift are still visible in the pool area). Despite being confronted with these concerns, the management still has no concerns about increasing the accessibility of the facility.

The Michigan Athletic Club is easily the best club to come to in the greater Lansing area. These reviews saying that the club is"dirty" and that "you can write your name in dirt" are lies. The club has made great strides in member safety and cleanliness. Like most places they appear to have some staffing issues that make some things difficult at times like the pools (Friday 5/13 prime example), but they're working on it and it's been an improvement since they've reopened. Aside from that, classes are great, equipment is clean and easy to use. Staff are polite and helpful. Great place!

Amazing place, pools, sauna, steam room, summer camp.Only reason for 3 stars is very poor customer service on a very many number of occasions. Customer service aside, this place is phenomenal, and very clean.

Throughout COVID they been charging $30 to keep account active. Now they’re open only limited amount of time and still charging full membership price. Powerhouse is best alternative. Definitely going to cancel my membership if they don’t change their hours of operations.

I frequent a lot. Nice clean place needs some more renovations. Only dislike is people getting into the hot tub naked and walking around naked. So I don't use the hot tub. No one wants to see that.

Fantastic environment for hard core workout or just a leisurely weekend spent at the pool. Worth the price β€œof admission” ! Friendly and professional staff almost always. Do wish the locker rooms would set back up to pre COVID arrangement. Time to move on.

The works! This is the most luxurious gym I’ve ever been to. Multiple pools, spas, saunas, indoor/outdoor tennis, basketball, running tracks, tons of cardio machines, and state of the art weight lifting machines, barbells, and more. I absolutely love the group fitness and yoga classes. Smoothies and salads are amazing from the built-in restaurant. This place has it all.

"The MAC" us doing a great job at maintaining safety protocols. We appreciate their policy of registering for swim lanes, especially adjusting the minimum reservation time to 30 minutes, which allows more people to participate.

The Michigan Athletic Club is a nice facility. They have a lot of different athletic offerings and equipment. The childcare facilities are nice. As are the offerings for kid parties. Like the pool parties are great too.

The one thing that kills me is some of these new covid rules. For instance when my wife and I go in to play tennis or pickleball they make us stay masked up the entire time. Makes it hard for us to have a good time playing together.

Never surprised at the outstanding service I receive when contacting the MAC but always appreciate it. Dominic in billing was knowledgeable and helpful in steering me through my Covid 19 questions and concerns. I believe everything the MAC is doing is fair (fees for holding your membership) and I came to this conclusion based on the wealth of information Dominic provided. He went as far as helping me with the bottom line of my decision to stay or go. He never missed an opportunity to keep me as a client, while also never ignoring my concerns. He did a great job and I am staying and willingly paying until I am able to actually go back to classes.

Extremely rude in the membership office, not sure why this Nicole woman still works here when there are numerous complaints about her on google reviews. No flexibility or student pricing. What a joke when your facility literally borders a huge college campus. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere and gladly.

We have been members at this gym for several years . BEFORE YOU JOIN: You should ask yourself these questions, is $175 worth being a member where they raise your price every year when; locker rooms don't ever get cleaned and there is hair all over the walls and clumps in drains, wifi doesn't even reach the whole Mac, classes that are subpar, over crowding during "rush hour" 4pm-7pm" A pool, thats always full of people and never room for you. A place where half the staff is rude and don't listen, where there is mold growing in some places, dust and dirt on gym equipment, men that groan like they are having sex, etc. An people who bring their cell phones in the hot tub, when there are signs that say "NO CELLPHONES BEYOND THIS POINT"' and the staff just walk by them and don't say anything to them. It infuriates me because I don't want to be on someones social media page being made fun of. I mean this is a great gym, but it has been going down hill the past two years. If your going to pay this much, my advise is find a cleaner gym, classes that fit your schedule and good wifi for the price your willing to pay. At least with planet fitness $10 got you great wifi and a clean environment.... Maybe the MAC should go to them for some advise?

There are signs everywhere saying "please do not rest on equipment". However no one follows those rules. Large groups of young kids will stand around machines occasionally using, or playing, on them without anyone saying anything. Lots of people messing with phones sitting on equipment. Even the trainers tell their trainees to rest on the equipment. If employees dont follow rules I guess it makes sense that they dont enforce them either. Its essentially a wifi cafe but instead of chairs, you sit on workout equipment. Makes sense for the hundreds it costs per month to watch other people sit on the equipment you want to use.
