Iβve been going to this Powerhouse for almost a year now, and I honestly think it deserves 5 stars. That said, there are a few things that could be improved.
To start, the gym is never overly packed at the times I go. Even when it gets a little busy, 9 times out of 10 I can still use every machine I planned to work out with. I also really like the variety of dumbbell weights β for example, they have 12.5 and 17.5 lb dumbbells instead of just the standard 15 and 20.
Speaking of weights, there are about two machines where the weight stacks tend to stick together. So during a lift, the weights will sometimes slam down out of nowhere. It doesnβt affect the workout much, but I hate getting side eyes from people because they think Iβm just dropping the weights.
I will say that the equipment is definitely older, but it works just as fine as any new machine in my opinion. Another thing, the weight stacks donβt show the actual pounds, just numbers like β1, 2, 3, etc.β I want to assume that means 10 lbs, 20 lbs, etc., but Iβm not totally sure. I wish they had a chart on every machine, since they have one on the assisted pull-up/dip machine, but Iβm not sure if that corresponds with the rest of the equipment.
The sauna in the womenβs locker room is small but definitely gets the job done. Small saunas are usually a problem because when people go in and out, the temperature drops immediately and you have to wait for it to heat back up. But this sauna stays hot, even when the door opens, which I really appreciate.
I also like how the main door remains locked 24/7 and you have to scan to come in. One thing I donβt like, is that after the staff leave, they also close off the studio side. The studio is a great feature because doing kettlebell or dumbbell swings on the main weight floor isnβt ideal due to limited space, so not having access to it after hours is a bit of a bummer.
On the topic of space, the gym floor can sometimes feel a little overcrowded with equipment. Itβs not really anyoneβs fault, the space is just a bit small. But I wonβt complain too much, because the gym makes good use of it and has all the machines you need for a solid workout. I will say though, it would be nice to have a little more room for deadlifting. That said, Iβve never had to wait to use the designated deadlift areas, it just gets a bit crowded with all the equipment sometimes.
I do think the price is a little on the high side, but I wonβt complain too much since itβs a 24-hour gym. Since the equipment is older, Iβd prefer to pay a little less. But because itβs never crowded I would still pay. Also the older equipment gives the place more character. The owner is cool, I met her and her dog twice and the workers are nice too. I like how I don't have to deal with contract BS. I just pay every 3 months and can stop at anytime.
I also want to add that Iβve been told many times since February about this price change, so Iβm not sure why people in the reviews are saying it was a random charge. I remember being told specifically by the front desk that the gym was getting new flooring and some new equipment β just an FYI.
In a couple months I have to move closer to Detroit and I can only hope I find a gym like this one.

I've been going to this gym for a couple years now thinking it'd get better, it doesn't. They charge a yearly fee for maintenance and new equipment, all the equipment is 20+ years old at minimum and falling apart. They take weeks to fix machines and if they're beyond repair it gets pulled and never replaced. They recently made "upgrades" which was nothing more than ripping out really old carpet and then replacing it with hacked together rubber mats, it looks horrible. On top of everything I went here because it was $25, now they upped the price by $10. So now with all that I'd much rather go to another gym that actually puts money into the gym. Shores powerhouse gets new equipment every year.

This is gym is absolutely ridiculous. Susan raised prices by $10 without notice, but yet the cable machine has been sticky on the right side for the last 8 months. There are multiple machines in this gym that have been broken for months including a leg extension and the cable machine. Thereβs more dust in this gym than grandmas exercise bike. I give this gym a Chasetopher Morgan review of 2/100.

I no longer attend this gym. It has nothing to do with them. I just prefer one that's in St. Clair shores. It's a little more geared, specifically towards women and the things that they need. This is a man's gym. It's run by a woman, but it's a man's gym

Nice to have Dummbells that go up to 160 lbs not a lot of gyms have that, this Powerhouse has a lot of older Cybex machines but i like them, some of the older machined are better than the new ones at LA Fitness. However lacking seriously in the core department, no ab machines that twist to hit your obliques, no real standard good ab machines with plates, and no good lower back machine with plates like Louie Simmons reverse hyper. Ya gotta have a good lower back machine if you're serious about lifting weights and weight training! Louie Simmons from Westside Barbell injured his back many times from lifting heavy weights but was able to repair it with a machine called the reverse hyper. It's awesome this gym is 24/7 and has a sauna, for that reason 4 stars, but lacking in the core department big time, probably gonna have to keep going back to LA Fitness or other gyms for this reason with my Aaptiv gym pass that allows me to surf a variety of gyms, or I'll have to workout my abs at home with my Titan Fitness Ab machine that allows me to stack plates. The ab machine they got near the door needs to go, not very good at all, waste of space. Rose Shores gym back in the day had a good Cybex ab machine where the padded bar goes across the chest and it locks your legs into place with plates so you can progress, the ab machine they got does not lock your legs into place at all, so you're not able to get any true resistance or progress much. Cool to see they have a signed picture of my old high school mate Steve Kuclo who's IFBB pro, Steve would probably also say you need to have a good set of machines work out your core, having good abs and obliques is very popular in modern day, especially for social media, some people go to gyms primarily for this reason, not having good ab machines with plates vs the standard body weight ones is a big drawback, those everyone already has at home!

Membership is going up $10. This gym claims βmaintaining a clean state-of-the-art facilityβ. It is anything but that. From dirty fans, holes in walls, stair steppers with broken steps, to the DIRTIEST sauna I have ever been in. Hopefully management starts to manage.

Never had a front desk person try to sway me away from signing up so badly in my life. 120 to sign up. Then I said I would get a day pass then he said I couldnβt be in the gym when staff leaves

Great place to workout!!!! I drive an hour for this location. With 4 other locations within 5 miles of my house. The atmosphere is great, awesome crowd, friendly, and social able. As well, the best machines for all novice-professional Bodybuilders, and Powerlifers. Also your everyday gym person. Never a wait on machines, or benches. Stop by, and ask for Susan, great owner.....

Just joined! What a wonderful owner who is the only woman-owned gym franchisee for Powerhouse in MI! She helped me and another friend join using our BCBS we did not even know we had through a cool program. Nice staff and great equipment and a very clean area. Plenty of free weights and equipment and you can wear a mask or not. Seems like a neighborhood feel as everyone seems to know each other. If you are a woman and want to support a woman-owned gym or just an ally to women, it would be so cool if you could support this gym and the owner by joining and tell others about it. She went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and fix a small mess we had when we joined another gym. Wonderful owner, epic gym. Join!

I called to set up mine and my husband's membership, we picked this one because it's close to home and it's 24/7, but the man who answered the phone was very short and unhelpful. We later went in and (the same guy)he was unwilling to help us set up the account claiming it could only worked with a sixteen digit number. I called our insurance to figure out the problem only to confirm this gym was accepting our insurance and they already set up their end just waiting on Powerhouse to finish imputing our info in their system. I explained this to the guy and he didn't even look at the computer or want to talk to our insurance rep. He just told us if we don't have a sixteen digit number he couldn't do it. This was our first experience with Powerhouse gym and it's definitely a lasting one!
Thanks for reaching out Susan, it was March 2nd 5:50pm I hope this employee is willing to adjust his customer service approach for future candidates.

I get hit on by the desk guy every time I see him. Also donβt quote me but I think thereβs a camera in the sauna (small plank mounted beneath the light with one wire running from it and one hole on the front). Havenβt noticed any more in other spots of the locker room. In conclusion the spray in the cleaning bottle is for windows and no one wears masks so beware.

Just love Powerhouse at 16 & Gratiot! Staff is friendly, trainers are amazing and I am seeing continual improvements to equipment. And to top it off the cost is very reasonable. Been going here for 5+ years now and the place is like a second family to me. Keep up the good work!

The owner is a female who's the absolute boss this girl handles her business she's running this gym with blood and sweat. She's a hard worker and she's turning the gym into a nice spot to be- I love the vibe there and a lot of good people who go there and use the facility they even have a sauna! I definitely suggest if anybody trying to get back in shape to go check her out- nice lo-key local spot I've been passing forever and one day I was like what the hell, I went in there and got a lot of weight off and its a 24 hour spot so you going whenever you want to so definitely check it out! Great staff..... Female friendly also I've been trying to get me wife in there but she's bullshiting maybe y'all have better luck

I just walked in the gym to join and got the worst customer service ever. I made the front desk clerk aware that I have trained at a different Power House and how much better this one was. And his reply was why are you telling me this I don't care. Almost like I was bothering him to request info about the membership. Very very bad front desk rep . Not joining thank you very much.

The management is a joke. The barbells are cheap and bent. The memberships are over priced. The funny thing is that powerhouse claims to fit every person's fitness goals...well that's a lie. The worst part is they have a Zumba instructor that spyes on you while you are working out. If your training heavy or hard, she will text the owner and say that you are disrespecting the gym. I think she's just jealous cause all she knows how to do is some stupid dance. The owner has no idea what she is doing. The Zumba instructor needs to mind her own business. All in all this gym is the worst.

Best gym in the area, very friendly staff, big mike and everyone are good people. Whoever called this gym old and dirty are just being little girls, the gym shows it's age, but it awalys kept clean. This gym is a place for serious lifters, and people who auctually want to workout instead of go play on fancy machines and watch flirty girl fitness. Would recommend to anyone.

Great old school vibe gym (steel weights, not plastic-coated ones!) and they are getting harder and harder to find, a nice contrast to the sterile, controlled atmosphere of all the other corporate gyms -Retro, Planet, etc, etc, they're all the same. And yeah, Powerhouse is a chain too but this particular location actually has personality and serious lifting/fitness fanatics. As one person wrote below the place is "old and dirty"...well, yeah, it is a little rustic but I personally prefer the serious fitness vibe these places radiate as opposed to the dainty, trendy, TV-everywhere-I-look, can't-take-a-simple-look-around-without-a-manager-escort controlled atmosphere where my conversation with the desk staff upon my entrance feels completely contrived and scripted on their end. Mike (a guy with a lot of heart and fire) is usually behind the desk when I work out and talks to you like you're a human being. I barely knew him when my birthday came around, when I did my morning workout he was the first person to wish me a happy birthday-what an impression that made on me! As far as the gym being dirty, that's crazy talk; in fact, I'm always kind of annoyed because when I am there the cleaning people are incessantly cleaning the place, running the vacuums and being annoying, but that's my problem, lol. They've actually got what it appears to be 2 people there specifically to clean the gym and they do not work behind the desk and they are there EVERY DAY. I suppose you can call the place old but you definitely can't call it dirty that's for sure. I guess the walls might not be freshly painted but that hardly constitutes the gym actually being dirty. My only real complaint and reason I can't quite give the place 5 stars (and it's kind of a big one depending on how hot the summer is) is that it is way, WAY too hot in the summer, I don't know what the problem is here but on 88 degree plus days it is miserable working out, my advice would be to work out in the mornings on those days. But I give the place 4 stars which really says something cuz I'm a tough grader, lol. I've been getting my best workouts in years and I know the atmosphere has a lot do to with it. I have gotten 2 people to sign up and am signing up another friend, my advice would be to just work out in the mornings in the summer if it's going to be hot day because after a certain time it will be sweltering.
