I travelled across the state of Michigan trying every Boulder/climbing gym I could find, and this was my first stop.
Scrapyard has been extremely significant to me as it was the first climbing gym I had ever been to. I have taken tons of friends to this spot to introduce them to the sport. They all left with a memorable appreciation for climbing and it's all thanks to how welcoming and charming the atmosphere of Scrapyard is.
Something that sets this gym apart from others is how amazing the people working here are. Every time I've visited there's always someone personable to chat with at the front desk. They treat all people as friends and are more than willing to help and assist you with any climbing needs you might have.
As far as the walls are concerned, Their holds are fairly maintained and set up very well. They have a large range of difficulties to choose from that span from never done this before to "you better know what you're doing or you will find out!" They offer Auto-belay, top-rope, slab, and a ton of overhang. Additionally, they consistently change the routes, so if you're a frequent visitor you'll always have something new to look forward to.
They have a small gym off to the side, but I think that there is also another business attached to them that's an actual training facility. They sell a small selection of snacks, and climbing equipment. I don't recall them selling shoes or any bigger items.
Bring your family, friends, and loved ones; This is the perfect spot to kick-start your new climbing addiction!

The staff are super friendly. I had a great experience my first time here. They were able to fit lots of climbs in a relatively small amount of space so thereβs lots to do. Prices seem fairly low as well which is great. I will definitely return!

Love climbing at Scrapyard! The gym and people behind it have awesome vibes and have built a great community! Lots of fun community based and inclusive events, strong and fun route setting, and very knowledgeable teachers and guides. Something for everyone of any level here, new or experienced, and I couldn't recommend them more!

Great gym all around. Love the staff and climbing community. Very warm and welcoming. Setting is also very good with lots of variation in difficulty and style. My personal favorite thing is the rope climbing! Only gym in Holland to offer that.

I've shared this before as a member of the climbing community and I'm further down in the reviews from a few years ago, but I'm double tapping here as a gym owner now.
Scrapyard has a storied history in the Holland community of developing the climbing scene here, and they do a great job of developing climbers, especially for outdoor climbing and tackling some of the bouldering in the midwest. Very thoughtful and intentional approach here. Look to Scrapyard for amazing rope routes too! (We don't have ropes over at Shift).
I've personally trained here for years, both for bouldering fitness and for outdoors multi-pitch, and my kids have participated in all of their kids programming (which has been a huge success -- my kids were introduced to climbing instruction here).
Highly recommend. <3

Always a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and great music. They also have some great deals in the shop and some class offerings at a great price. The routes have a variety of climbing styles and challenges. The only gym in the area to grade on your typical grading scale which I can appreciate.

The gym might be on the smaller side but the routes are frequently changed and the setting is fantastic. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They have 5 auto-belays which makes it great if you don't have a belay partner to climb with or if you don't feel like bouldering!

Went here for the first time recently. Overall a decent, but small climbing gym.
Pros: the setting is solid, they have modern holds and the walls aren't beat up, the other climbers there were very friendly, they have a solid little gear shop, several bathrooms and a sink outside the bathrooms is very convenient.
Cons: biggest one is size, Holland is small so this is absolutely to be expected, but you would go through all the problems at your level in about two sessions. The other was that I had a pretty negative experience with Megan at the the front desk who gave me some pretty hostile attitude over some very mild misunderstandings on my part.

Took my 2 kids, they are 5 and 8, first time ever rock climbing. Staff was amazing, helped us so much, and encouraged my kiddos. I would recommend asking and talking to the staff about the training so you are able to belay for your kids, this will give them more walls too climb.

Amazing place. My son is 8 and LOVES to climb so we decided to take him here to see if he'd enjoy something like this. He fell in love almost immediately. The young man at the front counter was super helpful and friendly. Turns out my daughter wanted to try it too, so there were lots of questions. He was so patient with them and made them feel super comfortable. We were able to rent shoes and harnesses and even got some quick instruction. They had plenty of areas that were within the kids skill levels and even gave them a quick lesson in falling properly. The other climbers and staff were also very friendly. This is definitely an all inclusive environment. Go check them out!

Scrapyard is really a hidden gem in Holland, and the city is very fortunate to have such a great climbing gym so close to downtown. While it may be a relatively small gym, Scrapyard has a lot of variety and a great community that keeps people coming back. The staff are always very friendly and helpful, and as a student at Hope College, the proximity to campus is huge plus. Overall would highly recommend getting a membership if you live in Holland and have an interest in climbing.

Great place to learn how to climb and boulder. My friends had a 2 hour appointment for a fun girls day celebrating a soon to be bride. Great small gym with friendly staff and community. It's a somewhat old-school style gym with shorter sport walls but with great setting and frequent turnover of routes. The sport climbs that I tried felt really bouldery and harder than their grade but I may just be saying that I'm out of shape...

The routes are styled to be similar to outdoor climbing, and are graded to be a little harder than other gyms in the area. I found the grading to be more satisfying and true to the scale.
The bouldering floor is well padded and doesn't hurt to fall on. The staff is super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.

This is your climbing home. I've never been to a place so welcoming and friendly. Josh(owner) and his staff are encouraging and authentic people who are very knowledgeable.
My wife and I decided to join as members in June 2021 and we immediately were made to feel at home even though we came in with very little experience. In many gyms, there can be a expectation to be really good right at the start but that's not the case here. Everyone is a cheerleader and respects your ability.
Josh makes use of the space really well by rotating bouldering problems every week, section by section so it's hard to get bored.
The easier, beginner routes are bit more limited than the harder ones. But there's still plenty to keep you occupied.
My only regret is that I didn't start climbing sooner!

Small, but fair prices considering the size. Looked like they are adding new walls still. They had a long bouldering wall, then a belay section in the center of the gym. There was a very steep overhang section, and some more stuff they were working on. All the holds were all well kept and not greasy. There are changing rooms and bathrooms onsite.
